Jenifer Ruff’s latest crime book is my very first book I’ve read of hers and I don’t know how I have missed all her others. This kept me up way too late reading and I really enjoyed this thriller. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release and for introducing her to me. I will definitely be looking for her other books now. This is to be published October 13, 2023.

This thriller follows the disappearance and murder of Phoebe, a young woman who has a passion for fitness. After a year, her body is discovered and an old trainee, Catherine, utters her name…but, Catherine suffered from a brain injury and has early dementia. With the help from FBI Agent Victoria, can Phoebes family get closure in this case and find the right killer.
Y’ALL THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD. I will say that i did in fact guess the ending on this one, HOWEVER, I truly loved the writing in this one. I know this will not be my last time tagging along on Agent Victoria’s missions. The twists were great and the story made sense. The author added just the right amount of detail to keep you wanting more. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good thriller but also wants a little bit of Olivia Benson energy added to the story.
I want to thank Jenifer Ruff & Books Go Social for my ARC from Netgalley. I can’t wait to read some more.

Jenifer Ruff is a one-click buy author for me! Her Agent Heslin stories are always SO fast paced and thrilling, it always feels like a huge treat when a new one comes our. :) plus they’re fairly clean at least as far as general market mystery/thrillers go, which I really appreciate so much.

Note: as much as I enjoyed this, I wouldn’t recommend it as your first experience with this series. The way the story is structured means that you see a bit less of the FBI main character than usual. This didn’t bother me, but it is a bit of a different feel than the other books. :) They are true standalones, though.

The Ones They Buried by Jenifer Ruff was WOW! I actually don’t have enough words in the English language to describe this book. This book is number eight in the Victoria Heslin Series. You don’t have to read the previous seven as they are all written as stand alone books. I recommend all of them for your reading pleasure. They are all seriously good. The Ones They Buried is by far the best one yet! It is over the top. Let me tell you why I think this book is so good.

In the back of my mind I wondered where the title came from. You might too. I have to admit I don’t give a lot of in-depth thought to the books I am reading. I let the author tell the story and let it unfold as they see fit. For me that is the only way I can enjoy and understand their technique of storytelling. I think over analyzing takes the fun out of what the author wants us to think.

In this case, Jenifer Ruff tells us a story so captivating that I could not figure out who I wanted to pinpoint as the one behind the disappearance of the fitness trainer. Is it Catherine Bower the main character, her husband, daughter, son, or her gardeners? It’s always the gardener. Right? There are so many viable choices. You have to read the book to find out because I’m not telling!

Victoria Heslin and her partner are assigned to the case. It is a year later and they have not found Phoebe Watson, the fitness trainer yet. These characters are awesome in what they do and why. I mentioned earlier that I have read a lot of these books. I have not read book one and two yet. I own them but, now I know for a fact I need to go back and read them. I am a total fan of Jenifer Ruff. She is a sweet person and has perfected her craft and it shines in this book. I never hesitate to read and review her books.

If you love police procedurals, suspense, mystery and thrillers. If you like Kiersten Modglin and Emerald O’Brien, you will enjoy Jenifer Ruff. Pick up your copy of this book and let me know what you think. Until next time…Happy Reading!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are strictly my own.

Another stellar offering from Jenifer Ruff, who is fast becoming one of my favorite thriller/suspense authors. The latest in the Victoria Heslin series, The Ones They Buried, follows Agent Heslin as she delves into the mystery surrounding a young woman whose remains were found in the woods. I love that the series are designed as standalones, and you can start anywhere and be perfectly up to speed, but the whole series is fantastic and should be read.

I must say, Ms. Ruff added a few problems for Victoria Hesin to overcome to solve this case. I had no clue who the guilty party was until it was revealed in the story. Kudos! I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Absolutely loved this! The writing style just flowed so well and the plot constantly moved forward. I loved that it was descriptive enough to set the scene but wasn't bogged down with the minutae that doesn't add anything to the plot. The characters are well written and well developed and although it wasn't the most twisty of thrillers, i still loved the story!!

One year ago, fitness trainer Phoebe Watson suddenly disappeared. Now, a killer‘s tip leads the FBI to her bones. One of Phoebe‘s former clients, Catherine Bower, seems to know more than she previously let on, but Catherine is suffering from early onset Alzheimer‘s, and has been unable to speak or communicate since suffering a severe brain injury a year earlier. As FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin starts to investigate, she soon finds hints that Catherine‘s accident and Phoebe‘s murder might be connected, leading her down the path of dysfunctional family secrets to unveil the truth about what happened in both women’s lives one year earlier.

I blew through this thriller in a day and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sure, I guess all the revelations correctly, but I have to give the author credit for very clever red herrings that made everyone seem suspect. I also cannot believe this is my first novel involving FBI Agent Victoria Heslin, who seems a capable, likeable investigator with good instincts. I just wish she‘d been given a bit more to do in this book - the story was told mostly from the POVs of Phoebe and Catherine, and the investigation itself took a back seat.

Now excuse me while I‘m off to locate the earlier books in this series.

Thank you to the author, Greyt Companion Press, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Undeniably riveting…

Jenifer Ruff never fails to deliver an engaging, plausible and completely absorbing tale, but this story revolving around a privileged family with plenty of buried secrets is undeniably riveting. The plot is irresistibly intriguing with plenty of tension, suspense and misdirection. The characters, some with admirable attributes and others with fatal flaws, are consistently convincing and full of twisted surprises. There is no shortage of “whodunit” stories about murdered young women but this one, in my opinion, is a superbly-crafted cautionary tale that will linger in your mind long after finishing the final page of this book. If you have followed this series, which I would highly recommend to any enthusiast of crime fiction, you already know that each book can be completely enjoyed as a standalone featuring the rigorous investigation and satisfying resolution of a crime which could easily have been ripped from contemporary headlines. The main character, FBI agent Victoria Heslin, is a smart, resourceful and highly competent investigator (not a bullet-proof, superhuman ninja devoid of fear or any semblance of self-preservation instincts) who doggedly pursues those who relinquish their decency or humanity. I have enjoyed the stories in this series and would be very surprised, if after reading one book, you did not want to collect the rest of them. Happy reading.

I was provided with an advance copy of this book, for which I thank the author, but I am sharing my honest and unbiased review on a completely voluntary basis.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It started really well. It drew me in from the first page, so I had high hopes. The Ones They Buried is about a woman who goes missing and the secrets that are uncovered while trying to solve the case. This book has many different character POVs and covers lots of family drama.

My interest started to dwindle about halfway through. It took me double the time it usually takes me to finish a book, to finish this book. I felt like there were some unnecessary plotlines and certain aspects that felt redundant and didn’t overall contribute to the story. Towards the end, it felt like something really exciting could happen, but then it just… didn’t.

This book is a part of a series but you do not have to read the books in order. There were only a couple of references to the other books, but it was meant to just solidify how good of a detective the main character is. I felt like that aspect was well done because it does make me want to read the other ones.

This book didn’t click for me but if you like police procedural mysteries that have a crime television show vibe, then you will probably like this book!

This is a 2-star read for me. 2.5 being average, I felt like it was below average. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to NetGalley and Books Go Social for kindly giving me an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for my honest review. The publication date is October 13, 2023.

This book has an excellent plot and characters, but I really don't like a story that's jumping back and forth in time. However, it's not that difficult to follow, it's entertaining, and it's a good standalone.

"The Ones They Buried," the eighth installment in Jennifer Ruff's Agent Victoria Heslin series, offers readers another intriguing mystery to unravel. While it maintains the series' signature suspense and intricate plotlines, it falls short of reaching the heights of some of its predecessors. I think there as too much POV from the other characters and what happened in the past. This slowed the pace a little. The novel opens with the mysterious disappearance of fitness star Phoebe Watson and quickly draws readers into the web of intrigue surrounding her case. Ruff excels at creating a palpable sense of tension and keeps the narrative moving at a brisk pace, making it difficult to put the book down. The premise of linking Phoebe's murder to the life-altering accident of multi-millionaire Catherine Bower is promising and adds depth to the storyline. Special Agent Victoria Heslin continues to be a compelling protagonist, with her determination and sharp investigative skills driving the narrative forward. Ruff's writing style remains engaging, and her ability to craft complex characters and intricate mysteries is evident. However, "The Ones They Buried" doesn't quite reach the heights of its predecessors in the series. While the plot is gripping, it occasionally becomes convoluted, making it challenging to keep track of all the threads and characters involved. Additionally, some readers might find the resolution of the mystery somewhat predictable, and the shock value falls short of expectations set by earlier books in the series. Despite these shortcomings, Jennifer Ruff's storytelling prowess shines through, and fans of the Agent Victoria Heslin series will still find much to enjoy in this installment. "The Ones They Buried" is a solid addition to the series, offering a decent mystery with engaging characters. While it may not be the standout installment, it's a worthwhile read for those who have followed Victoria Heslin's investigative adventures. It can also be read as a standalone, as there wasn’t much of a look at Victoria’s personal life. Thanks to Ms Ruff, Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review

Oh, dear! A possibly evil gardener in the first chapter! That’s all I needed to become addicted to this story!

The author, Jenifer Ruff, goes through great lengths to construct incredible legal thrillers that can be read as standalones (which really takes talent by the 8th installment) and, again, she doesn’t disappoint with this twisty tale starring London Fog latte drinker and FBI Agent Victoria Heslin, who has become one of my favorite characters. Victoria has become a better and better investigator, and you’ll never doubt for a moment that this is a competent, intelligent, and caring main character (she goes out of her way to leave positive feedback for people who assist her). I started in the middle of the series, so I am very invested series-wise in “Will she ever marry Ned the veterinarian?” “How many animals will they end up with?” “Is Ned aware that the only meals that Victoria cooks are crockpot meals for her goofy greyhounds?”

In this book, Victoria and her long time partner Dante Rivera are investigating possible ties to an out-of-state serial killer when a Jane Doe is unburied in the local woods. A tip from a caregiver of a mostly silent, brain damaged patient tells Victoria that the lady in the wheelchair saw the TV report of the body discovery and gasped out the victim’s name before it was publicly known. Catherine, the assisted living client, apparently knows something that she can’t communicate, but it’s quickly revealed that the victim was her personal trainer and a top suspect was her landscaper. This may or may not be part of the serial killer case, but Victoria realizes that there’s still a crime to be solved. The novel also contemplates the consequences of early-onset Alzheimer’s and what might happen if you can’t trust your memory.

I love these kinds of police procedurals with plots that unravel as the trusted lead investigator discovers clues and connections, and through sheer intelligence and persistence, the bigger picture emerges and she solves the mystery. In this case, the plot is aided by flashbacks that tell Catherine’s backstory, slowly revealing how she ended up in the nursing home and her involvement with the missing personal trainer. 5 stars for another terrific thriller!

Thank you to the author and Greyt Companion Press for a free advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review!

Literary Pet Peeve Checklist:
Green Eyes (only 2% of the real world, yet it seems like 90% of all fictional females): NO At through the last three Victoria Heslin books (when I started looking), author Ruff has never had a character with green eyes which is sort of flabbergasting. Green tea, green smoothies, green lawns, green veggies, but no green eyes.
Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): NO Catherine’s home was previously owned by certified gardeners who even labeled their plants. The wisteria is blooming at the right time of year, but there is a mysterious unnamed vine with white flowers — white clematis? Sweet pea? Morning glory? But since this is a thriller, I’d suggest the very poisonous Angel Trumpet Datura.

I loved this book. There are a lot of thriller writers out there but not many can get you wishing (every time) that you read the book version, so you can just take a sneak peak to see who the killer is but this author certainly can and she never fails to do it in an entertaining way. The story is told by several characters giving you a little bit of insight into what is going on and building up the tension for the conclusion. I had guessed who the killer but I still wanted to peak to see if I was right in not trusting this person. It's the kind of book that has you questioning everything. You start off feeling sorry for the disabled woman with her troubled home life but the more you learn the more you question how you should really feel about the characters. The only character you never doubt is Victoria. She continues to be a dedicated and kind agent and there is no doubt she will bring her killer to justice. I can't wait for the next case or the audio book version of this one.
When a killer wants his sentence reduced by telling the authorities where his other victims are buried, the FBI send in Special Agent Victoria Heslin to once and possible stop A deadly killer from getting out earlier. A body is discovered but is it one of his? When a tip comes in from a worker in a care home, Victoria is unable to question the witness and turns to her family for answers. The more she investigates the more concerns she has about the accident that put the woman in the care home and unable to speak. When the body in the woods is identified as her personal trainer, Victoria wonders if the two are connected and if so who is responsible? Can she keep a killer behind bars and possibly stop another one?

I had not previously read any of lie books in this series about FBI agent Victoria Heslin, so I went into this one without any specific expectations, but simply with the hope of reading a good book. My hope was validated by Jenifer Ruff's storytelling.

Phoebe Watson is a young fitness influencer who mysteriously disappears, and is found murdered a year or two later. The means and motive for her death are unclear, but there are suspicions regarding, of all things, a landscape gardener.

After the body of a Jane Doe is discovered in the woods, FBI agent Victoria gets involved in the case. She and her partner Dante Rivera are already involved in tracking down a possible serial killer, and while it is not clear whether the dead woman is connected to that case, Victoria wants to check out any possible links, in the hope of heading off further killings of this kind.

Meanwhile, there has been a curious development. One of Phoebe's previous clients, a wealthy older woman named Catherine, who has had a serious accident in the interim, apparently recognises her from TV news footage, before her body is formally identified.

One of Catherine's carers at the home tips off the authorities about it, and Victoria follows up this unexpected lead. The problem is, Victoria is limited in terms of the information she can get from Catherine because the accident has left the latter with diminished faculties, and she is dealing with the onset of dementia.

This is a well written and interesting story. There are plenty of twists, though it is not impossible to guess who the killer is. But that turns out to be not so important, even if you are one of the people who guess, because the story is so absorbing and such a good read.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

In the eighth installment of the Agent Victoria Heslin Series, “The Ones They Buried,” Jenifer Ruff delivers a masterclass in suspense and intrigue. The novel opens with the mysterious disappearance of Phoebe Watson, a fitness industry luminary whose absence leaves a void that captivates the nation. The plot thickens when, a year later, her remains are unearthed in a secluded woodland, setting the stage for an investigation that is as complex as it is chilling.

Special Agent Victoria Heslin, a character that has grown increasingly compelling over the series, finds herself at the heart of this enigma. Her tenacity and keen investigative skills are put to the test as she delves into a labyrinth of secrets and lies. The connection between Phoebe’s murder and the life-altering accident of Catherine Bower, a millionaire and one of Phoebe’s former clients, forms the crux of the narrative.

Ruff’s storytelling is taut and fast-paced, ensuring that readers are glued to the pages. Each chapter peels back layers of the mystery, revealing dark family secrets and unexpected twists that keep the reader guessing. The author’s skillful handling of tension and character development is commendable, making “The Ones They Buried” a standout in the thriller genre.

The book is a testament to Ruff’s ability to craft a narrative that is both intricate and accessible, allowing newcomers to the series to dive right in without feeling lost. Long-time fans will appreciate the depth and growth of Agent Heslin’s character, as well as the consistent quality that Ruff brings to her work.

“The Ones They Buried” is a gripping addition to the Agent Victoria Heslin Series. It’s a thrilling ride that combines a keen psychological edge with a deep understanding of the human psyche.

It was my first book from this author although I knew it was part of a series I still went ahead and read it because I wanted to see how good the thriller elements are.

The story itself was good, we have a Jane Doe who went missing a year ago and now the discovery of her remains pushes FBI agents to investigate this case. The best part of this story was the writing. I liked how it was neither too descriptive to bore you, nor too brief to leave things hanging abruptly.

Catherine’s character, her struggles and how her motivation shows up throughout the entirety of the book was very interesting for me to witness. Her struggle with Alzheimer’s and how vulnerable she felt at times, I don’t know why but it made me feel somewhat sorry for her. But we get to see how she isn’t weak, she’s willing to fight. And that’s what kept me reading further into the storyline.

The investigative aspects, although lacking in some scenes, still conveyed a sense of police procedural element. But I would say the FBI agent we have didn’t really act like one. Oops

The culprit… well once we get to see Catherine’s family I think it was pretty evident who the killer was. I mean.. does it ever surprise me I can always see the plot twists coming? Always know who the perpetrator is… *sigh* I have yet to read a book that will give me a plot twist that will leave my jaw on the floor. A book that will prove my theories wrong and tell me the person I thought who’d be culprit, isn’t in fact our culprit. But that has yet to happen. So I’ll let it slide

Overall it was a good read, the writing like I mentioned earlier was good. Catherine’s character was the most intriguing one for me. Maybe I’ll try some other books from this author.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.

I have some mixed feelings about this book. It’s all based around a Jane Doe whose body is found, Catherine (a women who had some mysterious incident and also had Alzheimer’s) having a random clear cognitive moment saying the name Phoebe to her caregiver Deja when seeing the news of said body being found, and Victoria an FBI agent investigating. It had multiple POV’s which was slightly confusing at first but allowed for the timeline of events to eventually come together in the end revealing what happened. We get Catherine in the past (1 year ago) leading to some of what happened to Phoebe, and then Deja and Victoria in the present dealing with Catherine and her family/doing digging into the mystery. There were some times I forgot Victoria was an FBI agent as it didn’t seem that complex of a crime and wasn’t a whole lot else involved in investigative measures.

This was definitely a fast paced and easy to understand book. It cut from one scene to the next which made it intriguing. The flip side of this was parts did seem pretty juvenile and not as complex of a mystery as I first thought. Certain hints are laid out that allude to the ending. There were some good little twists I hadn’t completely figured out having to do with other people. I did like the fact that even though this is part of a series, I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything or as if it couldn’t be read as a stand-alone. In the end it was a pretty decent thriller and probably best for people trying to get into the thriller genre who want some mystery but don’t want to put in a lot of brain power!

Right out of the gate I think it is worth mentioning that I did not realize this was book number eight in a series when I requested it. However, this book (and I later found all of the books in this series) are written in such a way that they don't overlap and therefore can be enjoyed no matter which one you are reading. I enjoyed being able to jump right in and immediately understand who was who when it came to Victoria and the people she was close to (or worked with).

When it comes to this story as a stand-alone however? It was a little... weird. Catherine has been unable to speak or really do anything for herself since her accident, yet she somehow miraculously is able to say Phoebe's name? The more the story progressed, it seemed a little obvious (to me at least) just who was responsible for Phoebe's murder, although I was surprised to learn of a few other details both having to do with the present day murder, and having to do with a years earlier accident.

There were moments where some chapters seemed to drag on, but I felt that the way Catherine's advancing Alzheimer's disease was portrayed made it easier for the reader to feel more on her side when certain pieces of information were revealed.

That being said, when I found out that all of this series is available on Kindle Unlimited, I have added them to my ever-growing to be read pile as I'm curious to read more from this author.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

This is easily my favorite of the ‘Agent Heslin’ novels! I loved the suspense from the multiple characters with motive. The interesting detail of Catherine now being non-verbal from anoxic brain injury adds a layer of frustration to Heslin’s investigation. I loved Catherine’s flashback POVs and seeing Phoebe’s story play out through her eyes. But could we trust her? Was her alcoholic, early-onset Alzheimer’s blackout the cause of Phoebe’s disappearance? Did John and phoebe have a relationship? So many questions and layers to unpack. I thought the story was well written, suspenseful and answered all the questions posed during the story!

Spoilers below 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

Was I surprised when Catherine’s deceased husband was found in Madison creek woods? Absolutely not. As a woman written with cutthroat business tactics, known for getting what she wants and doing whatever to make it happen, I had no doubt she had something to do with his disappearance. Boating accident with no body ever found, right after Catherine found evidence of his affair? That screamed foul play from the scorned wife! I did like the full circle moment of the plot, she began her killing by dumping a body in Madison creek woods, and dumped another many years later.

Catherine’s “accident” really was a suicide attempt, more of a merciful, ‘taking charge’ of her illness moment. I was conflicted on whether it was intentional or attempted murder for most of the book. I did doubt Will would’ve hurt his mother, he did everything to care for and protect her. When she explained her attempt as controlling her own demise, not succumbing to her illness, I could understand her feelings.

The Ones They Buried by Jenifer Ruff is the 8th book in the Agent Victoria Heslin thriller series.

Phoebe Watson was a rising star in the fitness world. Then she disappeared. The investigation takes a dark turn when her body is discovered a year later, buried deep in a remote, wooded area.

Only one person seems to know something about those remains—Catherine Bower, one of Phoebe’s former clients. But soon after Phoebe disappeared, Catherine suffered a life-altering accident.

FBI Special Agent Victoria Heslin believes there’s a connection between Phoebe’s murder and Catherine’s accident. As Victoria digs deeper, she uncovers a thick web of secrets and lies, and every thread she untangles points toward a shocking truth.

There were some very good plot twists throughout the story. I liked getting to know Agent Heslin and her team. The story held my interest, and the outcome was satisfying. I had the culprit figured out about halfway through, but I still enjoyed the story and how the plot was unraveled.

This is a standalone book, and as the author stated, each book features a unique crime investigation, which resolves at the end.

I will read more books by this author as I liked the writing style, how the story unfolded with strong characters and good storytelling.

⭐⭐⭐1/2 /5
(Rounded up)

When a rising social media health instructor, Phoebe, goes missing and one of her best clients, Catherine, has a debilitating accident so close together no one thinks anything of it. About one year later Phoebe’s body is discovered and Agent Victoria Heslin starts to uncover a tangle of secrets and lies as she tries to uncover what happened to Phoebe Watson.

THE ONES THEY BURIED is the eighth book in the Agent Victoria Heslin Series. This is the first book I have read from this series and it is true that they can be read as stand alone books. Since I did not read any of the previous books I did feel a disconnect from the main character. It felt like I did not really know much about her and I was not truly invested in her. I prefer a lot of character development, especially of the main character. Reading a book from the middle of the series may not be the best for my preferences. This book had deception, secrets, lies, and a whole bunch of mystery. If you are looking for a quick entertaining read with a great female FBI agent I recommend this book!

Thank you NetGalley, Books Go Social, and Jenifer Ruff for the opportunity to read this digital ARC for my honest review.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you, NetGalley for this ARC.

Special agent Victoria Heslin is back and how!! This is a great murder/ mystery thriller that will keep you engaged all the way through. Although this is the 8th book in the series, it can perfectly read as a standalone. If you, however, like a lot of character building and backstory, I would suggest to read the other books first.

Let's catch a killer!! The story is told in multiple POVs. I absolutely love Victoria and it is very easy to like her as is Dante, her partner. The plot is intriguing and I like the writing style of Jennifer Ruff. I loved how she takes you on this investigation and let you actually be part of the puzzle and I just love to connect clues to unravel the killer. The story has plenty of tension and suspense and if you love Thrillers this book is definitely one you want to read. The whole series is great so give it a shot.

The Ones They Buried is a remarkable novel full of twists and turns! This is book 8 in the Victoria Heslin series. I have read and enjoyed each and every book in the series and this my favorite thus far! Phoebe Watson is a young and beautiful physical trainer who goes missing without a trace. Catherine Bower is a wealthy client of Watson. Shortly, after Phoebe's disappearance, Catherine is involved in a mysterious, life altering accident that renders her injured and unable to communicate with the outside world. Ruff weaves a superb tale connecting these two women that is far deeper and more complex than the reader can begin to imagine. The novel drew me in immediately and as the reader, I found myself experiencing a complex range of emotions from empathy to disgust and terror! The characters in the novel are rich and multi-faceted and the story is fraught with surprising plot twists. A fascinating read for anyone who loves a thriller!

I read an ARC of the novel and this is my honest and forthright review.

The Ones They Buried, the eighth novel in the Agent Victoria Heslin series, is a great addition to this already fantastic series. Phoebe Watson, an up-and-coming fitness influencer, disappeared over a year ago. When the body of a murder victim is discovered, and one of her clients utters her name whilst listening to the news, her case may finally be solved. A major problem is that Catherine, the trainee in question, has dementia. The mystery deepens even more when a second body is uncovered. Special Agent Victoria Heslin and her partner, Dante Rivera, will have to use all their tactics to uncover the truth. This fast-paced story is another well-written mystery with an incredible plot and wonderful twists and turns throughout that keep you guessing as the mystery slowly unravels. Another great book by Jenifer Ruff and I look forward to the next one in this great series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my honest review. The next book in Jenifer Ruff’s Agent Victoria Heslin series, The Ones They Buried, continues her story with a new investigation. The book can be read alone but if you haven’t read the others in the series you should. You are immediately drawn in as the chapters go back from the time of a murder a year ago and back to present time, introducing the main characters. The chapters come from different perspectives depending on which character it is. It centers around Catherine, a wealthy women and her life that went from riches to devastation with an early Alzheimer’s diagnosis. You feel sorry for her until you don’t. There are some unexpected twists and turns but Victoria as always, follows her gut instincts and figures it out. Make sure you don’t have anything else to do once you start the book as you won’t want to put it down!

In The Ones They Buried, Jennifer Ruff has outdone herself. This book has enough twists and turns, and red herrings to make the killer reveal a true surprise. Skillfully crafted to keep readers guessing.

A dead body is found in the woods, and identified as a woman who disappeared a year ago, starting an investigation into the prestigeous family of the woman who employed her at the time of her death. But who is the killer? George the gardener, who was the last person to see her? His shady brother-in-law with a criminal record? Katherine’s adulterous husband? Or someone else? Katherine knows, but she can’t communicate the truth if she wanted to due to an unfortunate swimming accident which deprived her of oxygen for too long. But was it an accident, or was someone tring to silence her because she knew too much? It’s up to Agent Victoria Hessling to find out, but someone is trying to stop her. No spoilers. You’ll have to read the book to find out who and why.
