Weird War One: The Antihero's Guide to Surviving Everyday Life

Rate this book
Mat Devine, lead singer of the band Kill Hannah, inadvertently began his own popular advice column after Fuse TV asked him to blog about his life on tour. Mat's humorous and touching column, aptly titled "The Raccoon Society," gained a lot of traction as his fans sought advice on serious issues such as alcoholism, bullying, and self-mutilation, while also touching upon lighter subjects like dealing with siblings, fashion, and going to prom.

After seeing the sheer volume of wide-ranging questions flooding his inbox, Mat realized that the blog was no longer just an outlet for his road memoirs, but a unique and thriving community of music fans worldwide, who trusted him and the other readers enough to discuss some of the most intimate problems they faced.

Weird War One is a book for the outsiders who wear their hearts on their sleeves and a true reminder that you are not alone. Readers will also gain valuable insight and advice from special guests Amanda Palmer, Mikey Way from My Chemical Romance, and Tomo Milicevic from 30 Seconds to Mars. And for Kill Hannah fans, a rare chance to glimpse never-before-seen photos of Devine during his very awkward teenage years.

Fans of Kill Hannah should check out Mat Devine's first book Weird War One. It is a 31 page book in which Mat answers fan letters about how to deal with different issues such as depression, suicide, self-esteem, art, etc. Mat started the blog/site The Raccoon Society in which Kill Hannah fans can talk about anything. He has included some of the letters he received and answered in the book. There are also pictures of Mat when he was in High School etc.If you are interested in a motivational, encouraging short book, then Weird War One is for you.
Amanda Palmer, Mikey Way, and other friends of Mat also are guest writers in the book.

“EVERYONE’S life is a gift.”

That’s just one of the many quotes from Mat Devine. Some of you may know him from his popular band Kill Hannah (known for their songs “Lips Like Morphine” & “From Now On”, amongst others), which he has led since his days at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1994.

If you don’t know him, here is your chance to get inside the mind of this talented man.

For years Mr. Devine has run an online blog/community called The Raccoon Society (he explains why in the book), a place where his fans can gather, talk to each other & talk with him as well.

It started because of a blog he did with FUSE TV and grew & grew into a place where he gives us advice, talks about his experiences on the road with KH and in life.

This book is not just for his fans: this is a book for anyone who needs to smile, laugh & remember that they are worth more then they know.

Filled with advice, questions previously submitted by fans (my mother and I are in there, as well, under an old Twitter handle), photos and stories, this short book is a must-read for anyone who has been bullied, ostracized, and felt left out.

With The Raccoon Society, Mr. Devine created a place where we all belong, its essence captured in Weird War One: Antihero’s Guide to Surviving Everyday Life.

5/5–inspiring!

I must admit I didn't know what I was in for when I bought Weird War One. However, I was not disappointed.

Weird War One features passages from The Raccoon Society, Mat Devine's advice giving blog. They're separated into sections - surviving image issues/self esteem, surviving your family, surviving bullies, surviving relationships, surviving homosexuality, surviving depression, surviving art, surviving religion, weird random questions, and special guests. It doesn't matter if you've never heard of The Raccoon Society or Mat Devine before, because even if you're not going through the same thing as the person who asked the question, you can still find something in the response that applies to you. Mat is witty, insightful, and inspiring. In fact, I ended up with much of this book highlighted with things to look at again later.

Bottom line - I loved Weird War One and will definitely read it again.

Loved it!

I have lived KH since early 2000s and Mat in general. that said. I support mat in everything he does and ask the other members as well. this book was amazing! I don't read often but I finished this in one sitting. I bought it and loved it! I recommend this to people who are going through a confusing time, depressed time, confused about really anything going on. it lets you know you are not alone and being yourself is true happiness.

My only complaint is that I wish this were longer. It was a funny, insightful read. I hope he continues to put out books.
