I've known Queenie to the point that I can remember when this book had a completely different title, but one essential thing hasn't changed--and that's her commitment to her craft.
This is the best high fantasy novel that I've read in a long time. The characters' backstories, the action, and the romance...you can genuinely tell how much thought and effort the author put into this book! Wren is without exaggeration one of my favorite FMCs of all time, in part because she reacts realistically to trauma and grief, but also because her character arc is so captivating. Poor girl really did go through all three Hells and back during this book.
I also absolutely loved the romance. I'm generally not a big fan of romantasy, but FOTB is the one exception. I made (checks Kindle notes) approximately 30 notes and 100+ highlights, most of which were either me yelling about the romance, or me yelling at the characters for...well, you'd have to read FOTB to find out why! I can't wait to see how the characters, romance, and stakes develop in book 2...and speaking of book 2, I need it STAT.
It's absolutely surreal to hold Queenie's debut novel in my own hands. To know that I might have in any way encouraged her and FOTB to where it is today, is an honor in itself. Love you lots, Queenie! I'm so proud of you <3
5/5 stars.
