What do I want?
A quick death.
Barring that, I only dream of one thing—revenge.

Veyka Pendragon was crowned queen in a farce fit for any circus. Now, as her traitorous court plots around her, the new Queen of the Elemental Fae must take revenge on the humans who betrayed her while also guarding a dangerous secret.

The arrival of her betrothed, the storied Brutal Prince, is merely another cog in the wheels of time and space spinning around her.

Arran Earthborn is the strongest terrestrial fae in millennia. If Veyka wishes to keep the peace her ancestors fought and died for, she must join with him soon.

But the Brutal Prince has not earned his name by playing nice. The torture he exacts will enrage and enflame her—and endanger a secret that would rip their world to shreds.

The days are slipping by.
Very soon I will have to choose…
The crown that destroyed my life but protects my kingdom…
Or settling the scores that haunt my every step.

Crown of Earth and Sky is a twisted mythology retelling of the Arthur legend. It is a high-steam fantasy romance with dark elements.

For the girls who were broken by those that should have protected them.
For the women who were forced to become all too soon.
May we all, finally, be free.

THE PLOT

Veyka Pendragon was crowned queen of the Elemental Fae after her brother, Arthur, was murdered in cold blood. Veyka never had a dream to become queen in any sense. She was hidden away as a child and tortured by her mother in order to keep her secret of not having powers away from everyone. The only thing on Veyka's mind as queen? Revenge. She is dead set on finding and punishing her brother's killer, even if it kills her. That is until her newly betrothed, the Brutal Prince, or Arran Earthborn, comes into the picture. From the very beginning of their joining, Arran has despised everything about Veyka as a queen. She only wants to bring her brother's killer to justice, even if that means giving up her ruling to her council. Sparks fly and Arran and Veyka rule side by side, going to any length to find Arthur's killer and finally finding peace in her kingdom.

MY THOUGHTS

This book felt like being on a rollercoaster...literally. I truly did not like the beginning of the book at all. The language and grammar in this book takes a LOT of getting used to. It's very complex and most things make zero sense until about 50% of the way through the book. Veyka's character development through the book, however, was written and developed so incredibly well. She goes from being this self-loathing, selfish queen to truly caring about everyone and everything thanks to Arran. I LOVED the tension between Veyka and Arran. You could cut it with a knife the amount of times they wanted to be at each other's throats. However, the main "plot" in the book up until the halfway point were Veyka's tits. IT WAS LITERALLY ALL THEY TALKED ABOUT. It drove me insane like yes I understand she has big boobs can we move on? 🙄 I also wanted to touch on the representation in this book! I loved how the author made Veyka a curvy/plus-sized character along with other side characters! I don't see much of that when reading fantasy and I really enjoyed how she was portrayed in this book. 🫶🏼

Speaking of boobs, the spice in this book? Incredible. It was too much at first, though. Like it was all the characters talked about...sex sex sex. It was driving me up a damn wall. But, again, the halfway point is when everything turned around. I loved the politics, the magic system, the side characters, the world building, everything else was done so well. I just wish we got more of that in the first half of the book!!

This book is not to be taken lightly, as stated in the content warnings. It is NOT true dark romance but more of a romantasy with dark elements to it. ⚠️PLEASE CHEACK ALL TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR THIS BOOK BEFORE READING!!!⚠️

The tropes you can find in this book are:
Touch her and you die (literally)
"Enemies" to lovers

Overall, if you asked me in the beginning of the book if I would be reading the rest of this series, I would've said absolutely not. However, if you push through and really stick with it, it is COMPLETELY worth it. I had the absolute best time reading the rest of the book and couldn't put it down! I can't wait to read the next book in the series. This book would be described as a slow-burn romantasy, so if you like politics, magic, spice, and everything in between, this might be for you. 🩷

FAVORITE SCENES AND QUOTES

What do I want? A quick death. Barring that, I only dream of one thing--revenge.

They hoped that if they talked about court politics enough, if they discussed the matter in detail, I would eventually show some interest. None of them realized that most of the time, I just wanted it all to stop.

You can try to run, Princess, the beast inside of me growled. But I will always find you.

"When I come to your bed, it will be because you beg me for it. Not because you are trying to distract me to get your way."

Our bodies may burn for one another, but our souls sparked with loathing.

"That is your mistake, Arran. You assume that your soul is the only one that is ruined. But listen when I tell you...this thing within me, if it is a soul, is blacker that the starless night above the Split Sea. And no one can save me--not even you. Because I do not wish to be saved."

She was everything I'd suspected. And more. So much fucking more.

I pressed my lips to the back of his hand. I whispered against his skin. "I see you--all of you. And I am not afraid."

I'd kill anyone who tried to touch her and offer her their severed heads as a gift.

The darkness tried to consume me. But this time, I looked up and saw the stars.

"Touch her, speak to her, breathe in her direction--and I will hold you down while she shreds the skin from your body slice by slice."

I wanted to like this so much, but there are too many issues.

First, it’s poorly edited and the amount of typos is highly distracting. When I have to reread sentences just to figure out what the author meant to say, it takes me out of the story. The writing improved towards the end but I really had to push my way through.

Second - and let me get on my soap box for this one - I’m tired AF of reading how plus sized women are represented in romance novels lately. I’m all for representation, but so many authors are writing FMCs whose weight becomes their entire character. Veyka is plus-sized. We get it. But nearly every single chapter includes a description of her body. EVERY. CHAPTER. A few examples of the 22 I highlighted (and there are more):
I’d been told from a young age that there was too much of me—my belly too soft, my hips too wide, my breasts too large.
My hip hit the bookcase hard, the impact of my considerable weight sending several volumes flying…
She paused, hands settling on her impossibly wide hips.
…those vines wouldn’t hold Veyka’s considerable weight…
he actually leaned over on the chaise so he could see past Veyka’s wide figure…
I was tall, wide, with a soft belly and an ass that wobbled when I walked…

These are not flattering descriptions. These are not written in a more powerful light, as they should have been. As a woman, I find it quite honestly insulting. I am so much more than my body size, more than my weight, more than the circumference of my hips. If my fated mate was going around describing me as "impossibly wide", I would have found the closest cauldron of eternal damnation™️ and tossed him in! If the author spent half as many words on Veyka’s character (or maybe the plot overall) as they did reminding us all that she’s plus sized, this would have been a far better book. As it stands, I really had to force myself through this. Alright, rant over.

Putting that aside, I just didn't find Veyka to be likable at all. Yes, she is wallowing in grief and exists solely for revenge. But when she's supposed to have this turning point in her character development, where she actually gives a damn about the people around her, it's still ALL in service of her revenge. Arran, our MMC, changes his (extremely low but accurate) opinions of Veyka because...he sees her plotting her revenge and decides she's clever? Idk, I thought she was really selfish & petty throughout the whole book.

Last little pieces - Arran was just bland. All he seemed to care about is peace for the kingdom…and Veyka’s tits. Literally all of his thoughts are about fucking her, how selfish she is, and how they are about to be high king & high queen of Annwyn. Kinda boring, overall.

I really wish this had been better 😞

I loved this King Arthur retelling soooo much! Veyka Pendragon always expected her brother, Arthur Pendragon, to take the throne. But through a series of circumstances, she is required to marry the Brutal Prince and become Queen to lead and protect her kingdom. She doesn't plan to hold the crown for long. Only long enough to find her brother's killers...

The tension between Veyka and the Brutal Prince is delectable. There banter even more so. Veyka is the Princess of the Elemental Fae, and Arran has been Prince of the Terrestrial Fae for several hundred years longer than Veyka has been alive. One of the many reasons he is considered the Brutal Prince is becomes of his beast form that he thought he had under control until he met Princess Veyka.

A big thank you to @netgalley for approving me for this ARC!

Actual rating 4.5/5 stars. This is the first instalment in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series.

Veyka Pendragon was never meant to rule. But after her brother's murder she finds herself betrothed to the Brutal Prince, forced to rule the fae kingdom she cares little for, and attempting to banish the images of her deceased brother, the only one she ever loved and trusted, at the same time. Which focus will take precedence?

This was a fae retelling of King Arthur and I loved the subtle nods to this classic tale that appearred throughout. This was also so much more than a simple re-imagining, however!

Politics dominated but never bogged down the storyline. A murder mystery was at the novel's heart and it allowed the reader easy access into understanding how this realm was governed and what those opposing it wanted altered. Veyka was in a position of power but, unlike her brother, she did not begin her life there and so her insights were endlessly intriguing, as she often saw more than just one side in any plot point covered.

Veyka herself was my favourite aspect about this story. I'm so sick of reading about wilting wallflowers and dainty ladies who swoon at every opportunity. Veyka described herself as "not a small female, not by any means. Not even a regular sized female. I was tall, wide, with a soft belly and an ass that wobbled when I walked, breasts that swung and enticed." We love to see the representation and also the pride in it! She took up space, demanded notice, and did not apologise for her differences. Her body was celebrated throughout by the male love interest and it healed me more than this author will ever know to see strength and size celebrated so beautifully.

On that note, a close second favourite aspect was the spice!! It begun early on in the book and appeared frequently throughout, so be warned if this isn't something you desire reading about! Lovers of A Court of Thorns and Roses series, however, will have just found their newest obsession!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, Emberly Ash, and the publisher, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op, for this opportunity.

I wish I took a shot every time Veyka’s weight was mentioned because then I would have blacked out and maybe it would have made this book more enjoyable to read. I applaud myself on being able to finish it without throwing it across the room.

I just can’t with these lazy ass TikTok authors trying to one up each others tropes. 🙄

Edit - I can tell most of the people leaving reviews on this particular title are ARC reviewers.

Start rant:

I’m so sick of seeing “I hate to write negative reviews because the author works so hard!”. Excuse me, the review isn’t for the author. It’s for the people who are potential buyers. Why are you on GoodReads if you’re not honest in your reviews simply to not hurt the authors feels? That’s bullshit and why so many authors are simply lazy in writing the next big trope title to get them millions. So you helped them sell a terrible book so stupid people can buy into it? You literally helped the author, you get no money. The only benefit I see is getting free reading material. That’s not doing the author justice at all nor GoodReads. This site is full of fake paid reviews and I’m tired of wasting MY money on stupid shit when all I want is to escape a small amount of time from my every day reality. To only pick up a book like THIS that not only wastes my time and money but also pisses me off in my free time! So fuck yall. I hope GoodReads removes ARC reviewers entirely so they can all have their own site to constantly blow smoke in each other’s asses and leave honest reviewers alone.

End rant.

I enjoyed this story. It was a fun read from the beginning. The world building and character development was very good. I liked the murder mystery aspect of the book and found it well combined with the enemies to lovers MC’s. It was a page turner and im looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

On the evening that King Arthur is meeting with the terrestrials to continue their peaceful relations, Arthur is suddenly killed by humans. This leaves his twin sister Veyka as the new Queen of the Elemental Fae and is now the one who must marry the next heir for the terrestrials to keep the peace. However, Veyka has other plans, such as revenge on those who murdered her brother.

I wanted to like this book and the romance so much, but it fell severely short for me unfortunately.

What I did like is the world. It’s a vast world with the Fae and terrestrials(who I guess are Fae also, but can be shifters or have flora magic?). I liked the little references to King Arthur and those from his story. The start of the book is very good and books you in at first, which is always a good thing when starting a new book. There was a twist towards the end that I liked, but nothing really came of it, which was disappointing.

That’s basically all I really enjoyed about the book. The only plot was Veyka wants revenge and that she has to marry Arran to keep the peace and that’s about all I got from the plot and this is not a short book.

I primarily did not enjoy this book because of Veyka. She is grieving and does seem to be suffering from a form of depression, however, she was not a likable character, she had no redeeming qualities in my eyes, and the way she acted and the decisions she made could not justify the reason why. She’s a Queen. She has a kingdom to take care of, but all she thought about was revenge and herself. She took no interest in her kingdom and only wanted to find the traitor(s) within her own counsel and kingdom that had removed her brother. I get she wants revenge, but she could have gone about that a different way. She’s supposed to be 25 and she just acted petulant like a child and her answers were to drink or sleep around. And when she has a moment of clarity and realization that she does need to care more, the next page she’s thinking of drinking again to drown out how she’s feeling. The entire book I couldn’t bring myself to like her or care.

The toxicity in this book is astounding too. I know many will probably love the characters and the weird romance in here, but it was not for me. I was looking forward to this romance, but the romance did not appeal to me at all. The word hate, which is SUCH a strong word to use, is tossed around a lot in this book and I didn’t understand why everyone hated each other so much. Veyka hates Arran, but there’s no explanation why aside from maybe realizing how much more he cares about the people unlike herself, which hey, she can do something about it. Arran I could understand being angry and resentful towards Veyka and how she only cared about herself, but he also tossed the word hate around a lot and yet, wanted to sleep with her all the time. This romance and relationship was not a romance, it was just two people lusting after each other. It was just so toxic.

I know this book gives warning about darker elements in here, but there was nothing redeeming to me about those darker elements in this story. Veyka is selfish, petty and mean and Arran may have helped her start to climb out of the hole she dug for herself, but by the end of the book, it was too late for me. I just cannot bring myself to like this character which always makes it very hard to read a book when the main character or one of them is intolerable.

I really wanted to like this book, and I gave it a shot and read the whole thing hoping that I would like Veyka or just something that would help me like it more, but alas, that did not happen. I know many would love this book and the style, it just was not for me, though.

I received a free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wow. This book is so good. Do you want to start a new epic, Arthurian-fae, dark, adult fantasy series? Here it is. The chemistry between Veyka and Arran is *CHEFS KISS* The slow unraveling of the history and backstory of the characters of Annwyn is deliciously tortuous. The spicy scenes between Veyka and Arran are both hot and beautifully told. I want to read book 2 IMMEDIATELY!!! Unfortunately, we have to wait until December 2023 for the second book. 🥲

At its heart, Crown of Earth and Sky is a love story between two individuals who endured emotionally scarring childhoods in their respective fae courts: Elemental and Terrestrial. They built up walls to protect themselves, understandably so, and now they are thrust together to rule over Annwyn, thanks to an ancient pact created by their ancestors. And when I say thrust together…. I mean arranged marriage. Lol

We Get:
Arranged Marriage
Forced Proximity
Enemies to Lovers
Arthurian Fae Fantasy Realm
Dual POV
Court Politics and Intrigue
Spicy Adult Scenes
MINE!

Recommend if you like a steamy, dark, fae fantasy read for adults. Both main characters are dealing with their individual trauma, but slowly you get more information to see what made Veyka and Arran the fae they are today. This does end in a cliffhanger, but December isn’t too far away. I cannot stress enough how the heat between V and A is just smoldering; there are so many times when I thought “please bang it out” because the sexual tension between the two is so intense. This is a complete fantasy world that has so much to reveal. If any of what I vaguely described (as to not give away anything) sounds remotely interesting, please read this.

Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for this ARC. My review is voluntarily provided. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

❝The darkness tried to consume me. But for the first time, I looked up and saw the stars.❞

Revenge, peace, and assassinations.

❝In the next breath, I was alone. Just like always.❞

Veyka Pendragon is the crown princess of the Elemental Fae, her twin brother, Arthur, the king. But one fatal event turns Veyka’s life around and she is now the queen. To ensure peace, Veyka marries Arran Earthborn, who is known as the Brutal Prince.
❝I wanted to kill and maim. After nights of fitful sleep, I’d woken that morning with bloodlust on my tongue.❞

I so desperately wanted to like both Veyka and Arran, and I did try to, I just couldn’t. Unfortunately. Don’t need to say more tbh.
❝’Let’s make them bleed.’❞

Some chapters felt longer than others. The start made me want to read more, but as the reading went on, it got more and more blah. This really had potential. But I ended up skim-reading most of this book. The reason I gave it to stars was because of the smut and a bit for the revenge plot. Ahh, it had so much potential! It sucks to say this, but I will not be reading the rest of the series.
Hopefully, this will be someone else’s next favorite read even though it wasn’t my favorite read. There are enemies to lovers, fae, drama, murder, assassins, so if you like any of these check it out and see if you like it better!
❝For all that has been, and all that will ever be.❞

Happy reading!♥️

summary:

emberly ash has written an absolutely amazing romantasy novel that has drawn me in with such an intriguing magical system. the pacing was decent and the writing was excellent, allowing you to feel like you’re witnessing the banter and deception first hand. the novel is also loosely based on the king arthur and knights of the round table legend, which added a unique twist to the story.

readers are slowly introduced to elemental and terrestrial fae, whereby the main characters veyka and arran, respectively, are bethrothed. this is to prevent an endless war between their two territories. having the dual pov was quite a bonus as both characters could not be more different. they eventually team up with her friends to root out the deception in her court. many secrets are unravelled, with a concerning one involving the undead.

initial impression:

the first chapter had me hooked off the bat with the fight between veyka and her brother, arthur. the scene was so intense that i genuinely thought she was going to kill him. we also get a small introduction to magic types: fire, cooling and mind reading, as well as, there being a cost to magic.

main characters:

after her brother’s, “supposed,” murder, veyka has been thrust into the role of queen of the elemental fae. she has a dark past after suffering from her mother’s torture and after finally being freed, she feel trapped again with so much responsibility. despite this, she’s humourous, sarcastic, a bit selfish and hell bent on getting revenge for her brother. she then meets arran, a war commander, who just wants peace for the entirety of annwyn. he lives up to his title of, “brutal prince,” perfectly. the arranged marriage trope is always a fav!

parys was one of my favourite characters. he’s my twin with his love of books! i was so relieved that he did not get eaten by those lizards in the witch’s tower because that’s such an embarrassing way to die.

climax & ending:

this all happened within a hundred pages or so, with the rest of the novel being slow pacing. i didn’t have any issue with this except that it was so predictable!! i knew it was either roksana or her daughter as the traitors because that friendly attitude was too good to be true. also i knew as soon as i read that gawayn has always been loyal that he was the traitor LOL. he barely had any scenes and was always considered trusting by veyka. knew he was preying on her downfall smh.

critiques:

- normally in some romantasy novels there tends to be an information dump about the politics and history of the world, but thankfully this did not happen. it made reading super easy and enjoyable.
- out of the goldstone guards, lyrena was the most interesting with her mind reading. so why did she not use it to discover who was the traitor?
- fell in love with some of the side characters so i wished we got to see their perspective at certain points. especially when veyka and her friends developed a plan for questioning the witch. i wanted to see more of their personalities and interactions.
- what happened with evander and gawayn’s brothers in investigating the disappearances of children? hope to learn more about this in connection with the rifts and the undead in the next book.

ARC copy provided in exchange for an honest review. This in no way changes my rating or review.

I’m loving the increase in Arthurian retellings that we’re getting these days – they all produce a new twist and are so fascinating, and “Crown of Earth and Sky” was no exception! This was an interesting new dark fantasy romance retelling, with an arranged marriage and two strong and independent main characters. While I will admit that the retelling plot was on the lighter side, I enjoyed all Arthurian aspects, and the overarching plotline was strong enough to stand on its own nonetheless.

“I whispered against his skin.
‘I see you – all of you. And I am not afraid.'”

One of the central facets was certainly the romance – it was a little twisted and dark, but the two MCs were beautifully dedicated to one another. Our FMC had not led as easy life, and while I found myself highly frustrated by her at stages, I could understand her actions. I do have to say that I didn’t really connect with her though, or grow to love her as much as I wanted, but she certainly had a strong character that will leave a lasting impression. I also appreciated the rep with her being strong but not skinny.

“Don’t change a single thing about that gorgeous body. Ever.”

I don’t really have an opinion on the MMC – I think the reason for the 3 star rating is because I wasn’t particularly attached to either of the MCs, though I adored some of the side characters. It’s possible that this book was a little too dark for me – I really have to stop trying dark romances/fantasy books when it’s clear that they’re just not for me.

Nonetheless, this was an interesting and very captivating read, and I read it in a night! Thank you so much to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for the review copy provided.

This is sooo good, and has so much potencial for its future books. I'm excited to keep going!

It has a very good world-building, it's quite interesting even though it was a bit hard to get into it at first. It had the typical confusing start, when you get a lot of information and it's overwhelming, but it is quite well done.

I really liked the characters, they were entertaining to say the least. Plus, I loved Veyka and Arran together. There was animosity, there was tension, and there was a spark; at least, I felt it from their first scene together. It might've been insta-lust, but it was sooo entertaining.

Plus, lot's of drama and plots in this one. Definitely a fun read.

Thank you to netgalley for the chance to read this amazing book, and to the publisher for accepting my request.

Listen I love a moody self destructive FMC so I was gonna love Veyka no matter what. The court intrigue and the fact that this is an Arthurian retelling just worked so well for me. Especially because sometimes fantasy romance tends to lack in plot but whew this did not lack in the slightest.

I’d like to thank NetGalley for approving me for an ARC of this book.

💥 Our story starts with a bang. When Veyka’s twin brother Arthur is murdered she finds herself the new heir to a kingdom she doesn’t want and a marriage alliance she didn’t ask for. I really enjoyed this opening to the story, it really set the scene and got me excited about what was to come.

🧑🏻‍❤️‍💋‍👩🏻The spice hit very quickly with Veyka and Arran infatuated with one another but because they are both very stubborn and strong it takes them a while to admit their true feelings. I personally thought the banter and slow burn between these characters were done really well.

📖There are some subtle nods to the story of King Arthur which were cleverly intertwined in the story. When you add the impressive world building this story becomes more than just a classic reimagined.

🌟I now need book two to be available because this story ended on a cliffhanger that I wasn’t ready for. I need to know what happens next for Veyka and Arran and I’m also adding Arran to my list of swoon-worthy book boyfriends!

I really hate being the person who writes a less than raving review, because I know authors work so hard to tell their stories. I always try to be as positive as I can, so here goes. This book had SO much potential. It’s a retelling of King Arthur in the most badas* female way. Unfortunately it just didn’t land for me. The plot was great. I kept reading because I needed to know what was going to happen. The characters felt fully fleshed out, they dealt with trauma, and the love story was even sweet. I enjoyed the spicy scenes for the most part as well, and there were quite a few! BUT and this is a big but, to get through the story we had to hear about her ample curves, hips, and breasts a lot. We all love a curvy queen, but we don’t need to hear about it every other page. There were also an abundance of typos, I usually look past these fairly easy, there were just a lot. All in all I will continue to read the series because I need to know the ending. I just can’t see myself recommending this to anyone because it seemed to get on my nerves a lot.

Allyce is on page 29 of 484 of Crown of Earth and Sky: DNF @ 6%

The grammatical errors in this book are outrageous. There is a place referred to as 'The Spit' several times, which is later corrected to 'The Split'. It's as if no one bothered to proofread.

Additionally, the book contains every trope imaginable. You lost me at the fated mates who are shifters, terrestrial and elemental faes intertwined with King Arthur and Excalibur themes, along with monarchy, revenge for a murdered brother, revolt, a reluctant heir, and a murderous, nonchalant MFC.

HEAVY ON THE NOOOOOOOOOPE.

I’m only on page 29, and I’m already overwhelmed by all of this.

Maybe it's not the book, but me. I’ll revisit it in the winter when it's cooler, and my tolerance for books like these might be better.

This is the first book in a four book series which is complete it gets of to a great start the characters and plot definatelly have me intrigued the romance between the two main characters happened a little to fast i would of liked a little slower pace i definately loved the fact he fell first we dont see that often enough in fantasy romance books i love the banter between the characters the main female character is feisty and i think its only going to get better im interested to see how the story develops and to see what becomes of the characters i did like the writing the pacing was a little off in places and the spice was a little to much i did kind of skim most of it but i would recommend this so far.

OH MY..

I think i just fell in love with a new series. and another about Arthur but Fae and shifters?!?! ugh.
Vekya was perfection. a Tall, Thicc bad bitch queen?!? omg yes. i was absolutely obsessed with her from the beginning. and her male love interest obsessed with everything about her body from the first moment. ughh and the picking her up and making her feel weightless. YES.
ARRAN. DADDDDY. Yes. my godness. yum.
both of them came from hard pasts and i love that it was never shown as a weakness. both stories were explained to each other and never pitied.
Politics were surprisingly huge in this book and as much as i hate them i was actually interested in this entire book.
SO.MANY.DEATHS.
thank god the spice was spicein!! the characters had such good enemies to lovers hate that once it all came together you can see how strong and powerful this love can be!!
now where i felt like this book was a little too long i also liked that we got a whole story in this book and now we will get another in the rest.
this could be up with ACOTAR & Fourth wing! i cant wait to see where the rest of these characters go and what she does with them.
this book leaves you on a happy go lucky moment ..SIKE.. Massive WTF Cliff Hanger!!! make sure you have book 2 ready because you are left with a double jaw drop! cant wait to start book 2!!!

I am always ready for a new mythology retelling, and the King Arthur retellings are always a wonderful treat! Crown of Earth and Sky was different than any of the retellings I’ve read before. With a main character, Veyka, who is not from the original mythology. She is forced into becoming Queen of the united fae land of Annwyn when her beloved twin brother, Arthur, is murdered. The perfect king, she is anything but the perfect queen. And with their ancestors pact that a High King and High Queen must rule together as equals, one from the elemental fae and one from the terrestrial fae, she is now forced to be betrothed to the Brutal Prince of the Terrestrial fae. But she only has one thing on her mind. Revenge for her brother’s murder.

I loved the set up of this! Veyka was secluded away from court growing up because of her lack of magic. Her mother tortured her for years until her father finally died and Arthur was able to rescue her, locking their mother in her rooms. She is finally free for the first time, and able to connect with her brother the way they should have had the chance to growing up. But it’s all taken away. Just as Arthur prepares to marry the terrestrial heir, Guinevere, humans break in and behead him. Veyka is left to pick up the pieces of her shattered self. But she’s incredibly depressed, listless. Giving up control of her kingdom to the royal council, and spending her days fighting and sleeping and having sex to dull the pain. This part was incredibly relatable. If you’ve ever dealt with depression, this behavior and attitude is scarily on point! It made me really sympathize with Veyka, even when I didn’t like her decisions.

But those decisions, we learn, all have a purpose. She’s much more cunning than it appears at first. She’s is selfish, however. Not thinking of others or what might be happening in the kingdom beyond what she sees. I loved that her selfishness wasn’t blunted here, and I really enjoyed her arc through this book as she learns to care and look beyond to others. She wakes up in a sense. The growing threat facing her and those she’s come to care for making her see what is at stake, and what her part in things should really be. It’s the perfect way to shape her from a very selfish being to one who is doing her best for her kingdom. She’s also nervous about her lack of magic being found out, knowing it would tear the kingdom in two. So her motivation is completely understandable. Still, with help, she’s able to reach past this barrier and start to become the queen we know she can be. That she shows traces of throughout the book.

A lot of that is due to her betrothed, Arran. He was raised a soldier and was never expected to become high king once Arthur was born the heir for the elementals. He’s gained a reputation for his brutality and has rare magic. Including a beast form! But truly, he’s dutiful and wants to see a peaceful Annwyn. He and Veyka clash immediately. Her irreverent, selfish attitude grating at him, but still, he can’t help but want her fiercely. They are drawn to one another and aren’t able to contain the lust between them. They’re truly good for another too. They each help the other to grow and understand more of the other’s perspective. They grow closer throughout until they end up relying on one another and feelings develop.

Their relationship is so well done. I loved the instant chemistry between the two of them. It was palpable right away, but their clashing personalities took a bit longer! Watching the two of them slowly adjust to the other, learn about one another and open their eyes to who the other truly is was wonderful. It was paced perfectly to be believable. And right to the end, Veyka is struggling to accept what’s right in front of her. For a girl who’s been through what she has, it’s completely understandable she would have issues with relationships and feelings, not to mention trust. There’s also the connection they seem to share, which gives her access to the beast inside him. I loved this facet of their relationship. The way she literally speaks to the beast inside him. The way to beast reacts out of his control to her. It’s sexy and sweet at the same time, which can be a hard line to balance, but this does it perfectly!

The plot of the book surrounds the two of them joining together, the quest for revenge against Arthur’s killers, and control of the court. There’s also a larger plot looming in the background that Veyka keeps dismissing and making me want to shake her! While Veyka and Arran are seeking clues and trying to sniff out information, it’s clear the court is running its own way and that every issue is actually tied up together. Veyka has been playing the game to try to get information, but things go off the rails as more people find out, attacks occur, and witches get involved! I loved this whole thing. I always love court intrigue, and this fae court now comprised of two somewhat rival races of fae is being thrown together with the factions that are within her own ranks. Uncovering all the mysteries and the people involved was so much fun for me.

It’s hard to write intrigue and mystery, so I’m always really impressed when it feels natural and done this well. The ending was also done fabulously. I love that we get both a happy wrap up to the plot of this book, and also a cliff hanger that leaves us wanting, setting up the plot of book 2! I can’t wait to read that and see where this is going. I’m so excited by the two things revealed at the end. I was able to see them coming, but I still loved every moment of it! The relationship between Veyka and Arran is in such a fragile, yet tentatively good, place. The knowledge of what they are would certainly send Veyka over the edge! And didn’t the witch tease us nicely?! But that’s overshadowed by what happens to her. I was waiting for that all book so I nearly cheered when it happened. Though where she is…I definitely need book 2!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Wow, this book surprised me. I gave this book 4 stars. The retelling of king Arthur was amazing, Emberly Ash did an awesome job incorporating the subtle hints from King Arthur, such as the round table and the sword. It is also giving me a court of thorns and roses vibes. I love the fast-paced storyline and world-building. The slow-burn romance and enemies to lovers is chef’s kiss! The chemistry and the tension between Arran and Veyka is something to look out for, both with strong characters but they still manage to balance each other out in terms of their desires and beliefs. I cannot wait for what the second book holds. I have received this book from netgalley. Thank you to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for giving me this ARC and Thank you to the amazing author, Emberly Ash for writing this book for fantasy lovers like me.

Four and a half
Well I've definitely found a new author to stalk oops I meant follow ! Yes if you enjoy fantasy romance that features the Fae and is most definitely aimed at grown up readers than this new series should definitely go on your reading list.
Wow talk about steamy pent up tension ! This couple have that in spades and if honest it took me ( and Arran! ) a little while to warm up to Veyka but as the story progressed the character development just grabbed hold. Is it perfect ? Well no and honestly I do applaud a heroine that isn't necessarily stick thin but occasionally her no doubt bountiful curves were mentioned a little too much . However I totally get that the author was trying to do justice to all that was going through Arrans head. I ended up thoroughly enjoying this book and eagerly turning the pages but that ending ! No , you are a mean author doing that to your readers but I cannot deny it was a fabulous way to keep me hooked and I will definitely want to read more.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Wow, wow, wow, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. For me a 5 star read and 3 spicy peppers.
I received this book as an ARC and here is my honest review.
Who doesn't love a strong FMC (Veyka) and hot seven foot morally grey MMC (Aaran)??? This is a retelling of King Author but with fae and animal shifters.
The second half of this booked had me hooked with the adventure and the dynamic between the love interests in this book. I also loved the side characters and role they play in the story.
The end of the book had me hooked and I didn't want it to end, yes there is a cliff hanger and the second book doesn't come out until December.
Be mindful of the trigger warnings there is some serious content written into the book.

⚠️ Trigger Warnings: This is not a true dark romance, but it does contain dark themes. Definitely check content warnings before diving in. ⚠️

Fae politics, murder, and an enemies-to-lovers romance dripping with tension—Crown of Earth and Sky delivers a wild ride that keeps you hooked despite a rocky start. This book ends on a crazy cliff hanger, so thank goodness that this is a finished book series and we don't have to wait to dive into the next book!

Plot Overview
Veyka Pendragon never wanted to rule, but when her brother Arthur is murdered, the throne—and a betrothal to the Brutal Prince, Arran Earthborn—becomes her new reality. Determined to seek justice for her brother’s killer, Veyka struggles to balance revenge with her reluctant reign. Meanwhile, Arran despises her methods, setting up a dynamic that is equal parts frustrating and electrifying. As the two navigate their uneasy partnership, the story unfolds into a murder mystery woven with court intrigue, magic, and a romance brimming with tension.

WHAT WORKED
Tension & Romance: The enemies-to-lovers dynamic between Veyka and Arran was chef’s kiss. Their clashes were fiery, and their chemistry was undeniable. If you love a slow burn that turns into an inferno, this book delivers.

Political Intrigue & World-Building: While the first half leaned a bit too heavily on certain physical attributes, once the plot picked up, the magic system and fae politics took center stage in a way that made the world feel immersive.

Plus-Size Representation: Veyka’s character stood out not just for her strength and stubbornness, but for the way the book celebrated her body. Seeing a plus-sized heroine who takes up space unapologetically—and is adored for it—was refreshing and empowering.

Spice Level: If you're looking for a romantasy with a generous dose of steam, this one brings it in abundance. Fair warning: The spice starts early and remains a key part of the story.

WHAT DIDN'T WORK
Confusing Start: The writing style takes some getting used to, with complex language and moments that don’t fully make sense until you’re well into the book. The first half, in particular, felt slow and repetitive at times.

Overdone Focus on “Assets”: The sheer number of times Veyka’s body—especially her breasts—was mentioned became a lot. It overshadowed more important elements in the beginning, making it hard to stay engaged with the plot.

FINAL THOUGHTS
While the book takes a while to find its footing, once it does, it delivers a compelling mix of romance, revenge, and rich world-building. If you can push past the bumpy start, Crown of Earth and Sky is a thrilling romantasy that offers strong female representation, a gripping mystery, and a romance that burns hot.

I had a lot of fun reading this book! It definitely brought me out of the slight reading slump I was in.

The highlight of the book for me was the characters. We have our FMC Veyka who is grieving the loss of her brother. She is despondent and disinterested in everything except avenging her brother’s death. She was so tough and independent, but also just in so much pain. I really enjoyed her character arc in this first instalment and I’m excited to see her growth in the next book. And then we have Arran🙈 Ahhh I loved him so much! He was grumpy and ruthless, but with Veyka, we got to see different sides to him. The romance between Veyka and Arran was a great slow-burn romance. There is no she fell first, he fell harder situation here because Arran just fell HARD, that’s it. He was resisting his feelings for so long, but we knew that he was a goner for her🤭

We have also have a great group of supporting characters. Gwen and Parys were some of my favourites. Both of them have suffered following Arthur’s death, but they handle it in different ways. I really hope we get to see them find some happiness in the next book because they deserve it.

The only reason I didn’t give it a higher rating was because I felt that the world-building and the plot were confusing at times. Some things were not explained clearly and it would take me a few pages to grasp what was going on. But that didn’t stop this book from being super addicting and I can’t wait to dive into the second book.

Thank you to Netgalley and the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

4.5⭐️ Wow, I truly could not put this book down! I devoured this book, like neglected-all-responsibilities-to-read-this-in-two-days devoured. I haven’t read a King Arthur retelling quite like this. I really liked the uniqueness of it. I’m docking this .5 stars just for how much the FMC’s curviness is sexually described and how often the word “female” is used. Maybe that’s a personal preference, but this is my review :-)

The plot was really intriguing. The fae court can only have one heir, and as twins were birthed, and Veyka being second born and without powers, was locked away and tortured by her mother in hopes to instill powers in her. Once Arthur become king, he frees Veyka and locks mommy dearest away. That is until he dies and Veyka is betrothed to the Brutal Prince. I really enjoyed their chemistry, while I was a bit confused why Veyka hated Arran, I can chalk it up to her PTSD, hatred for being crowned Queen, and him being in closest proximity. Their enemies to lovers plot line was great. I thought the second go around of the enemies part could have been dragged out a bit, but by that time I *spoliers* already knew they were mates so I understand why all was forgiven so quick.

Veyka is a badass FMC, whom I obviously don’t believe is powerless. I’m sure she has *spoilers again* mind reading capabilities and is of decent that had not been seen for hundreds of years. But we gotta get that chosen one trope in here some how. Also, what happened to the mom? I need to know where she has been

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, will definitely be recommending to those who like ACOTAR, Legendborn, any type of smutty-fae-romantasies, and will hopefully be approved for an eARC of book 2 because that cliffhanger 🤯

Huge thank you to the author and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review

*Thank you to Emberly Ash, Victory Editing, and NetGalley for providing a free e-book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.”

I’ll be honest I only started reading this for the elemental and terrestrial fae, I did not realize that the book was an Arthur retelling.

What I liked:
Some elements reminded me of ACOTAR.
Humorous sentences. Example: “Mighty king, annoying as shit brother”.
Terrestrial courts powers.
Elemental court powers.
Prophecies, secrets, and ploys.
Beasts, Fae, and more.
Banter and tension. Example: “What is it?
It’s a book.
I will throw it at you. “

What could be improved:
Pacing. The end felt very rushed. Ends with plot, another plot, another plot, twists and turns, plot, etc.
Certain plots weren’t as enjoyable. Especially how the main male character thought of the female main character at times.

Overall, I would give this a 4 out of 5 stars. I am interested in reading the sequel.
