A series of brutal murders has shocked the normally quiet town of Lydelton. With no idea of the culprit’s identity, or even how the murders were committed, the townsfolk have become suspicious of each other, teetering on the edge of panic. As the town Constables, Raedrick and Julian must put a stop to the murders and bring the killer to justice.
Somehow.
Before they can do that, the arrival of a member of the Magestirium poses another dilemma. Because their friend Melanie is a mage, in violation of the laws forbidding women from practicing the magical arts, and the Magestirium’s wrath against those who break their laws is legendary.
But protecting their friend’s secret while saving the town from a horrifying killer may not be possible, since defeating this killer will require every resource Lydelton can muster.
Michael Kingswood has written numerous science fiction and fantasy stories, including The Pericles Conspiracy, The Glimmer Vale Chronicles, and the Dawn of Enlightenment series. His interest in scifi/fantasy came at an early age: he first saw Star Wars in the theater when he was three and grew up on Star Trek in syndication. The Hobbit was among the first books he recalls reading.
Recognizing with sadness that the odds of his making it into outer space were relatively slim, after completing his bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Boston University, he did the next best thing - he entered the US Navy as a submarine officer. Eighteen years later, he continues to serve on active duty and has earned graduate degrees in Engineering Management and Business Administration. Fitting with his service onboard Fast Attack submarines (SSNs), he does his writing on Saturdays, Sundays, and at Night.
He is married to a lovely lady from Maine. They have four children, and live wherever the Navy deems to send them.

I was hesitant in starting to read this book. The cover of the book didn't make this seem like the type of book I would typically read, but boy was I wrong. The author captured my attention from the very beginning of the book. The action starts right away and doesn't stop. I haven't read the first book in the series, but it didn't matter very much. There were very few references to the previous book.
Constable Julian is the main character with his partner, Constable Raedrick and their friend Melanie who is a Mage. Legally, she cannot be a Mage because she is a female. When a Mage from the Magestirium shows up in their town, Melanie has to protect herself from him and find out what he is doing in their town.
Julian and Raedrick are trying to find out who is committing murder in their town and stop him from committing more, all the while protecting their fiend from being found out, is quite exciting. Can't wait to find out what happens next in Glimmer Vale.
I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads. I found this book a little hard to get into at first. In the beginning, I feel like there was a little too much filler. A little back-story is nice from time to time but if it's not really relevant to the story-line it can be a little annoying. Once you really get into the story and get to the meat of it, there's less unnecessary filler and more action. Although it is second in a series, it can be read as a stand-alone. I liked the main characters' stories and the relationships between them were well developed and described. Julian seems kinda goofy but I like that in characters. Overall, I enjoyed this story and would like to read more from this series.
