Batman must enlist the aid of Clayface to help a young child afflicted with a rare skin disease. Can the Dark Knight convince Clayface to do what's right?
In this issue the story is titled “Deals.” Batman here is asked by parents to help their child. There’s a bit of a suspense here in the beginning because the story doesn’t tell you right away at first what’s wrong with the child though we know doctors and medical science cannot help him. The suspense is further build when Batman must go to Arkham Asylum to get one of his villains to assist. As a side event other villains asks what is going on and the villain lies about how he’s out for good behavior which prompts the other villains to be upset and Batman has to help the staff of the asylum to bring thing in order and control. After all is in order Batman and the villain goes to a lab and the walk to the child room there’s some conversations and attempted escape. We see when the child is introduced to the villain the villain is emotional. Will he help? What can he do? I won’t give it all away but it’s a good short story.
”Deals” starts with Batman stopping a diamond robbery. When he returns the diamonds to Jim Gordon he tells Batman about a ten-year old being kidnapped from a government facility.
Batman talks to the doctor that was on duty who confesses he let the kid go with his parents. Batman tracks down the parents who beg Batman to help their son. The government admitted in can’t do anything for him but still wouldn’t let him go.
Batman goes to Arkham Asylum to talk to Clayface.
”You were an actor once. Act like you’re a human being.”
But Clayface wants a complete walk with a good clean record for his help.
”Come on, Batman — you bend the rules all the time. What’s so different here?”
I’m not exactly crying but this one packed a punch. Highly recommended. 5 stars
