Wilder Family #2

Head Over Heels

Rate this book
There’s only one course of action when your dad wants you to marry a clammy-handed wimp to make one of his board members happy—you get yourself stuck in an elevator with a hot stranger and have the steamiest make-out session of your life.

Years of etiquette lessons went out the window thanks to Cameron Wilder, who managed to unleash my hidden bad girl with naught but his talented mouth and deliciously rough hands.

Afterwards, he went back to his small-town life, and I marched home to inform my dad there would be no business-centric nuptials. As punishment, he shipped me off to Sisters, Oregon and demanded I turn a healthy profit on a not-so-healthy property.

You see where I’m going with this—the buttoned-up city girl stuck in a small town hires a local builder to help her … and he’s the hot stranger from the elevator. Turns out, I have a weakness for the broad-shouldered nice guy who’s not so nice behind closed doors. Keeping things professional gets harder the longer I’m in town, until the only lesson I have left to learn is how to keep both our hearts from getting broken.

Emotionally Mature Men FTW!

Full disclosure: this book made me feel too much so I’m a little mad at it. But after thinking on it, I have decided not to punish this book for making me experience emotions, and thawing my cold dead heart, so I’ve rounded to five stars because I am such a softy (shut up, I am).

This hero by himself deserved all the stars. He was the strongest, sweetest and most emotionally available hero I’ve read in forever WITHOUT seeming contrived. Cameron Wilder is the GOAT.
The heroine was going through a lot and this was a heavier read (Karla always brings the feels) with themes of parental loss and emotional abuse, but there is a kitten so it’s balanced.
Would have liked a better epilogue, this one seemed more like a final chapter.
If you’re looking for high angst, insta-attraction, class difference, small town romance with a capable blue collar hero who is all in but also stays patient waiting for his lady to get there; and has lots of great side characters, I recommend this highly. But bring your Kleenex 😭 .

Thanks to the author and wildfire marketing for the arc, all my reviews are honest.

”trust made you do strange things, didn’t it?”

In every book that features a member of the Wilder family as a protagonist, there is an atmosphere of agony tied to their patriarch's illness and inevitable loss. the author's ability to navigate each narrative through a different notion of grief is both beautifully elegiac and cruelly poetic. by molding their closure and making the farewells they needed to move on with their lives, she brought out the different characters' grief in a nuanced manner. this book was not exception to the Wilder rule, it was filled with heartwarming and heart wrecking family moments.❤️‍🩹

”you could hurt me so badly.”

Ivy, the main female character was somewhat puzzling. switching moods, changing personalities from a spontaneous cheery woman to an ice queen but still one hell of a woman. she came from a wealthy family that was inclined towards ostentatiousness, with a father who was always concerned about their appearance and how people perceived them based on their distinguished family name. from an early age, she idolized him and let his voice dictate her every move, choice, and decision in life. after finally standing up for herself, she was expelled to a small town as punishment. nonetheless, she endeavored to earn her father’s trust by complying with his demands. watching her slowly come out of her shell was something I loved to witness. how she comprehended that the manner in which her father treated her differed greatly from the typical and healthy relationship between a daughter and her father. how she learned to trust and love openly and freely without any societal boundaries. although she was slightly snobby on the edges, I loved it because it added some hilarity to the plot, she remained authentic by the end without altering or morphing her personality into something else.

”there was no peace when it came to what I felt for Ivy because even with her pressed tight against my side, her body warm and soft on mine, I didn’t feel like I could hold her and never let go.”

cameron wilder placed high expectations and standards on his other siblings. way too high, and it’s completely understandable why some members of his family felt eclipsed by him. an irreproachable son, a devoting brother, a caring friend. his character breathed the prefect man lead. a depiction of the ideal fictional character. despite carrying his own demons, ghosts, and bruises, his bright personality and kindhearted soul remained untarnished. I loved Cameron and every aspect of his personality, including the good and the bad. the light and darkness.

” I want you to keep me.
I want to feel like this forever, but only if it’s you.”

Cameron and Ivy’s relationship started off with a steamy and insta-love encounter but i loved how if didn’t shape the development of their relationship that was in someways drown as a slowburn. i loved Cameron patience. Ivy’s doubts. the way both of them were the incarnation of golden retriever X black cat but completed each other. the way they made every touch, every word and every declaration matters in their love story 🥺

PS : I CANNOT WAIT FOR IAN’S BOOK!!

many thanks to Wildfire Marketing and the author for proving an arc in exchange an honest review!

4.5 stars rounded up because of Cameron and how this story squeezed my heart

Note about interconnected standalones: some side characters in this book have been main characters in prior books. This does standalone, no prior reading necessary to appreciate.

Both Head Over Heels and this review address a topic that could be triggering for some readers. I want to put it at the top of this review because one aspect of the story that spoke strongly to me was this side plot line. It’s not the primary focus of the book, but it strongly affects the main characters.

Emotional part of the review over and switching focus, Cameron (H) was such an emotionally stable, caretaking and bossy type who got walloped the first time he set eyes on Ivy (h). He’s a builder and good with his hands so yay for blue-collar too. Ivy was a put together heiress who’s finding the life she was groomed for isn’t entirely acceptable, but she’s also butting up against years of training in how to act and be, along with her father’s expectations. She’s just as affected by Cameron though. They share a vulnerable and steamy moment stuck in an elevator and while Cameron would have pursued something right away, Ivy squashes the moment. She’s used to being controlled so for her to feel like she was precariously imbalanced, she was quite the prickly and reserved character to start.

Then these two end up doing business with each other after Ivy’s sent to Cameron’s part of Oregon as a punishment from her father for the rejection of his plan for her. Ivy’s walls are sky high, while Cameron and others in his small town are warmly curious and inviting. I loved the growth that came about as Ivy saw how others lived in contrast to the way she was raised to function. The timeline is on the shorter side (a couple of weeks), but the depth of the feelings and the insights that occur, the changes that are brought about, I loved the slow progression of who Ivy allowed herself to want to be and Cameron’s careful support. Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama (though h is pressured to be engaged to an om at the start but this is what she’s not ok with; an ow tells the h how interested she is in H; and the H does get territorial over a random om just talking to h in a bar) and neither are virgins (h had one prior experience that wasn’t great; H appeared to have been celibate as he didn’t date and wasn’t a ONS type).

I did wish that Cameron and Ivy spent more time on page doing date-like activities. This is a slow burn and not just for Ivy and Cameron, but also for Ivy to be open to spending time with others, like Cameron’s family, and connecting in general. Great for that feeling of growth, but it meant less on page time of them once they’re an established couple. I still loved the intimate moments they had and the connectedness they shared. They’re also pretty connected on the physical intimacy level with a few steamy times on page that also reflected that same change in Ivy as things continued.

I loved Cameron’s family and the warmth that they exuded (well, not Ian but he had his own charm). Ivy was completely overwhelmed and at a loss what to do with them for a good part of the book but I felt like she belonged with them and I loved that for her. I was so mad at Ivy’s father with his coldness and his manipulations. He does get confronted about how he treated her and I ate that scene up. Also, this story has an adorable animal sidekick in the form of a plant-destroying kitten who’s precious.

The latter part of the story is the most emotional so grab your tissues. I did wish that there was an epilogue showing Cameron and Ivy further out. The ending is still solid of them in a HFN but in love and making plans for their future. Past characters from other books that are members of this family continue to be side characters in other books so I’m sure Ivy and Cameron will be seen again, I just always want that epilogue and future scenes in their own book. I still loved this and it made my heart full even while my eyes leaked.

4.5 ⭐

I absolutely loooove it! 🥹 Cameron and Ivy were just so good together. 😍 The love in his family is just about everything. The way they totally embraced Ivy? It literally melts my heart. Everything works so perfectly well here, even the sad part. The tears I shed were totally worth it. 🥹

I just wish there were more to the epilogue and not just a HFN situation, but overall, this is really a good story. 🩷

I know that not everyone likes insta attraction, but I do. And my favorite kind is when the MCs part ways and fate throws them back together 😋.

Ivy was guarded and had very little experience with men. Cameron was respectful, patient and, let’s be honest, pretty perfect. I really enjoyed Cameron’s family too, so I will keep reading this series, even though the next book is about Ian, who was the worst of the bunch AND had a man bun.

No rating, DNF at 7%. There is nothing wrong with the writing or actual storytelling. It’s just a case of me not being a fan of reverse grumpy/sunshine and seemingly insta-love on the hero’s part.

The story starts with the construction company owning hero exiting a business meeting that went poorly. There were rumors in the news that his big client had committed tax evasion and sexual assault, but before the client could be proved innocent or guilty, our hero pulled the cancel-card and broke the lucrative contract with his client. So now he was standing on the street, talking on the phone to his business partner sister, and moaning for (8 pages?) about how their company will suffer without that contract, they might need to lay off employees, etc.

About this time, our heiress ice princess heroine walks past the hero while he is on the phone. He starts feeling pings in his chest and needs to clutch and rub his chest… just because she walked within a few feet of him. 🧐

Next scene has them both getting stuck in their hotel’s elevator. Supposedly they make out hot and heavy while stuck in the elevator, but I bailed before then.

Personalities of both characters just rubbed me the wrong way, not my jam. In the 7% that I did read, I felt there was too much inner dialogue moaning about his work problems and how he can’t stand not being able to fix everyone’s problems and then she’s over there thinking how her etiquette teacher would disapprove of this and that - and fretting over her daddy issues of letting him down by not going along with the arranged marriage he wants for her.

As long as you’re cool with a nice guy hero that seems to fall first for the grumpy heroine, this might be a great story for you!

Did I just read my favorite Karla hero to date? YEP. She truly outdid herself with this one. HER MOST EMOTIONAL AND SPICIEST BOOK TO DATE. I was not expecting to fall in love with Cameron so much but he gave me no choice 🥲

“Just tell me what you want,” he commanded. “Tell me, and I’ll give it to you.”

This man is fundamentally perfect in every way. I agreed with Ivy because who tf is THIS perfect??? He met Ivy where she was at and never wanted to change who she is. She was always enough for him from the start and he made sure she knew it too, even though she didn’t understand it. He has such a big heart and I WANT HIM SO BAD. HIS LOVE LANGUAGE IS ACTS OF SERVICE AND I’LL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT IT, HE DEFENDS HER WHEN HIS BROTHER SAYS SHE’S A BITCH, AND HE FALLS FIRST 🥹

And Ivy. She’s not used to being loved without there being an ulterior motive so when she meets Cameron and his family, she doesn’t know what to think. Because how can they be this nice to her when they don’t know her? What do they want from her? These moments with his family were so heartfelt. The found family is phenomenal. Like I want to be apart of the Wilder family 😭

I knew I’d love this book but not this much. I feel completely attached to this couple and characters so much. I bawled the last chapters of the book because it was just that beautifully written. The way Karla wrote grief within this family was GUT WRENCHING. I love them all so much and I’ll be thinking about this book for a long time.

“Little moments that felt big.”

Nobody does cozy family vibes like Karla Sorensen!

Cameron is one of the Wilder family sons and co-owner of the family’s construction business. Ivy is his complete opposite, a city girl who was raised with a “business first, love and affection never” mindset. Opposites do attract because Cameron and Ivy each have strengths that the other needs to lean on in their hard times. That attraction also makes for a chemistry these two can’t ignore!!

As usual, the Wilder clan is one that is unforgettable. Big family dynamics are my favorite to see, especially when the family members are the biggest supporters of your relationship! Reading about this family feels like one big hug that I never want to leave! Watching the family grow bigger with partners and kids is heartwarming and I can’t wait for the next book!

TROPES: opposites attract, cinnamon roll hero, elevator meet cute, city girl heroine; big family dynamics; small town

TRIGGER WARNINGS: death of a loved one; parental alienation

Head Over Heels was an okay small town romance. Reverse grumpy/sunshine. I enjoyed Cameron and his family. They have a strong relationship all of them and I could feel it.
What I couldn’t feel was the chemistry between Cameron and Ivy. I don’t mind slow burn and this story definitely was but then I need some good tension and chemistry which sadly was lacking. So their evolving relationship dragged and sadly I lost interest.
I felt the focus was more on Cameron and his family which was ok but it should’ve been 40/60 between the family dynamic and the romance.
Overall a comfortable and easy to read story. Because of the good introduction of Cameron’s siblings I might continue on with the series.

I ate this one up like Thanksgiving dinner! The chemistry between Ivy & Cameron were sizzling like water on a hot skillet. This is small town, big family dynamic at its finest and of course I love heroes that are blue collar..there’s just a gruffness about them that I love and add cinnamon roll to it and I’m a solid goner. Words fail me, but just know I loved this one!

Cameron Wilder is officially my favorite Wilder sibling. From all the Washington Wolves books this has to be the most emotional. Before I get to Ivy and Cameron’s relationship I want to state that Tim (Cameron’s dad) stole the show. I cried, and cried, then cried some more. His loving personality, him coming to terms with the end of his life and making peace with each of his children was so heartbreaking. The reunion with his boys will haunt me for a long time.

Now as far as the couple, I could not stand Ivy the first half of the book. Which means the author did an amazing job writing a character with the emotional capacity of a goldfish. Ivy was bitch straight up. Condescending, rude af, and a snob. However, as the story develops we learn why Ivy is this way and her honesty with everyone, especially Cameron, as to why she’s like this and how she doesn’t know how to “people” makes you want to just hug her and give her all the love in the world. Now Cameron, I mean what can I say, he’s a good man Savannah! His patience with Ivy is what has put him on my pedestal. As hard as our heroine pushed, he was there and was exactly what Ivy needed to break that armor she hid behind.

I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

I loved this book with all my heart. I love the Wilder family.
Ivy is a city girl that is send to a small town because she didn´t want to marry, so she goes to a house that belonged to her grandparents. She needs to remodel it so she hires a crew, but it happens to be Cameron´s. They had a brief meeting in the city and the sparks happend and they didn´t expect to meet again.
I loved them both so much, but Ivy was my favourite, she is so strong with everything that happened to her and how she is used to live that i just wanted to give her a hug.
Cameron was so good, he knew everything that he had to do for her to be confortable, they are such a cute and perfect couple.

Will update when I’m done ugly crying.

UPDATE 1/12/24:
Now that I’ve finished sobbing into my pillow and can string together coherent thoughts I’m ready to review.

My frickin’ heart.
Book one topped my list of 2023 reads, so I wasn’t sure how this one would play out. I was apprehensive that I wouldn’t like it as much as the first, but Cameron and Ivy are THE couple. Like wow. I wasn’t ready for the feelings I was going to feel after reading this book.

Head Over Heels starts with an elevator meet cute.
Ivy is in a wedding dress and SPRINTING away from an arranged marriage. And as if fate is trying to buy her time, the elevator decides to break with them stuck inside it. Cameron is shocked by her appearance, but as they start chatting he realizes just how much he empathizes with this mysterious girl. The more they talk, the thicker the tension gets.

Ivy REALLY doesn’t want to get married. And that couldn’t be more clear than when she climbs on top of Cameron. She starts to lose herself in him but then, the lights flicker back on.
And the mortification settles in.

She runs off Cinderella style, never expecting to cross paths with Cameron again until fate intervenes once again.

These two together were everything. Ivy is embarrassed by their unprofessional start, and can’t help but snapping at Cameron at every turn. All it does is amuse him as he takes her bad attitude in stride. They come across as very golden retriever x black cat which I was living for. He can be grumpy with his brothers, but for for the most part he’s a gooey soft cinnamon roll.

I’m a sucker for opposites attract and these two checked all my boxes. They had the cutest banter. Drove each other crazy. And Cameron has such an adorable nickname for her with the sole purpose of annoying her (Swoon—I love when the “enemies” be loverin’). As much as she tries to deny it, Ivy was kicking her feet right along with me. The tension between these two is THICCC.

I absolutely loved this book. Every part of it was so good. I’m in love with these characters. This story line. This town. Everything. Each book that gets added to this universe is so special. There are no words to properly describe how sweet this book is. Ivy doesn’t exactly have a good role models in her own family, but the Wilder family shows her what it means to love and be loved. And watching her finally open her eyes and realize what she deserves was so rewarding. By the end of the book I was fully sobbing. I don’t think I stopped crying for a solid hour. This family feels so real, and I would give anything to spend just one day with them.

If you haven’t started this series, WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!!! I highly recommend starting at the very beginning and reading about the couples that came before this series. They’re great standalones so you can jump in anywhere, but it’s best enjoyed from the start.

I cannot wait to see what’s next for the Wilder family and I will continue eating these books up like it’s my job. Huge thank you to Wildfire Marketing Solutions for the eARC! It was such an honor to read early.

violently sobbing at how precious and sad and emotional this book was. Not only did I find a new book boyfriend but also the perfect fictional family 🥹👏🏻

4.5⭐️

Cameron and Ivy’s story was sooo emotional but so worth it in the end. Opposites attract, city girl x small town guy, elevator meet cute and SO much found family.

I loved the wilder family and the way they made Ivy feel so included. And CAMERON?? Book boyfriend material. He’s perfect, like no flaws at all. He loved her rough edges and the fact she was grumpy and teased her and loved his family UGH he’s perfect.

Karla Sorensen knows how to write and I can’t wait for the next book 👀 (and poppy’s)

“Just tell me what you want,” he commanded. “Tell me, and I’ll give it to you.” HOW IS HE NOT REAL

This is one of my rare 6 star reads ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's the kind of storytelling that my heart craves. Full of genuine emotions, family connection, delicious chemistry and happily ever afters. You know the kind of book you finish and just smile. That’s this book.

I adore this family of characters and was excited to discover that Cameron would have his story told. I’m a sucker for the quiet, reliable family member. There’s often so much more below the surface and he did not disappoint. He’s in my Top 3 heroes from this author.

Ivy was everything he didn’t know he needed, or even wanted. Their connection from the beginning was profound and more than a little fated IMO, the universe knew they’d need each other. They were both exactly what the other truly craved, and although they couldn’t be more opposite, they were also a perfect match.

This book isn’t an easy read, the grief these characters go through is raw and respectfully handled. As someone who lost a parent to cancer, this one was a punch to the chest. But in a weirdly beautiful way.

This author’s writing goes from strength to strength with each book and I definitely recommend you read not just this book, but her entire back catalogue.

T/W - loss of a parent.

I received an arc of this book.

THIS FAMILY 🥰🥰🥰🥰

I absolutely love the Wilder family. I fell in love with their family dynamic in Erik’s book and each sibling plays such a pivotal role as to why I love them like they are real people 😂. Cameron, somehow was the sibling I didn’t give much thought to. Maybe because he is the steady type. The one you don’t have to worry about, and so I didn’t really wonder about who he would end up with but I’m so glad it was Ivy.

I wasn’t sure if I would like Ivy at first with her icy demeanor but she grew on me. The steady, sure, strong way that Cameron showed her patience and love in this book had me swooning from the very beginning. Ivy’s willingness to open up and experience love for the first time and to be vulnerable with Cameron’s family, in the best way she could, made me want to root for her. Add in the emotional bits with Tim and Shelia and I was a blubbering mess throughout many parts of this book.

Also the kitten was my favorite little side character 🐱

You’ll really love this book if you enjoy: small town, he falls first, grumpy(more like closed off)/sunshine

I love this book. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book by Karla Sorensen so I forgot how much I love her writing. This is the first book in the Wilder series technically, though we’ve met some of the characters in previous books as many are related.

Cameron and Ivy meet when they are trapped in an elevator together. Their instant chemistry is off the charts but before things go too far they are rescued. They didn’t have time to share information beyond first names and Cameron lives in a small town so it seems it is destined to be one of those moments that will be remembered when one is old and grey.

But Karma is not always be a bitch. Cameron is a custom builder. It turns out that Ivy has inherited a home in the town Cameron and his family live, that needs major renovations and though Ivy doesn’t know it, Cameron’s company is the only one that can do it. They are both in shock when they see each other but Ivy is almost dismayed. Because of the way she was raised, by a single workaholic father who is incapable of treating his child with love and kindness and understanding. Instead she’s raised to be cold and untrustful of anyone. She was in a vulnerable position when they were trapped in the elevator.

Cameron is very close to his family and it’s a large and loving home, the opposite way then Ivy was. At this point Ivy was not a likeable person and I was a bit concerned that I wouldn’t be able to care about her, but I was worried for nothing. The more we get to see her through her POV, the more my heart breaks for her. She’s blown away by the kindness and generosity she receives from Cameron and family and the citizens of the small town. Her whole world is rocked.

This is such a tender story about two people from opposite ends of the spectrum. From the beginning Cameron gets Ivy and is very patient with her. He loves her for her sharp angles. I love the extended family and they are important in the story. There’s a side story that had me in tears.

I highly recommend this author and will continue to read her delightful stories. I own a number already and those I don’t own are available on KU.

Head Over Heels is the second book in the Wilder Family standalone series (book 1 is One and Only). This one is a small town, opposites attract (city girl, small town boy) romance!

Ivy and Cameron first meet while stuck in an elevator together. They end up sharing a lot with one another quickly, finally letting out things to a complete stranger that they haven’t really told anyone or admitted to themselves yet. They end up making out as well, but then go their separate ways once they’re out of the elevator. We cut to months later and she ends up in the small town where he lives. She was sent there as a punishment of sorts by her father after she says no to an arranged marriage situation he had lined up for her. She quickly runs into Cameron again and ends up being taken in with the entire Wilder family while there.

This series has been okay for me, they are good but not favs from this author. They are quick, easy reads though if you’re in the mood for a lower angst, small town series following a family. We do deal a lot with his family, seeing his siblings, and his father who has a terminal illness. I feel like there are just so many small town romances out there nowadays, and this one just didn’t stack up for me.

“You are mine, Ivy,” he rasped. “All the little moments and the big ones, they're ours. I'm yours as much as you're mine, and I don't want any kind of life if you're not in it.”

4.5 🌟

Karla Sorensen is one of my favorite authors, so I was excited to start her new book, especially as I'm so attached to the Wilder family. Head Over Heels follows Cameron and Ivy; they meet and find themselves trapped in an elevator as Ivy runs away from an arranged marriage. The tension between them is palpable instantly, and they end up having the steamiest make-out session. When they get out of the elevator, Ivy is ashamed of what she's done and runs away again. But their paths soon cross again, as Ivy is sent to a small town and hires a local contractor to renovate and sell her inherited property, who turns out to be Cameron.

Ivy and Cameron's story is beautifully written and very moving, and I loved it so much! I became attached to them from the moment they first met and devoured every one of their interactions. The fact that they have to work together after what happened between them in the elevator makes the story even angstier. It was also very sweet with all the Wilder family moments and some of them even brought a few tears to my eyes.

I think Ivy has become one of my favorite female characters! She's perceived as a cold, emotionless woman, but she's misunderstood and not used to being loved without ulterior motives. Cameron never judged her, and the more time they spent together, the more they opened up to each other. And when she was most vulnerable, he always supported her. He was also very protective, patient, and gentle with her. Over the pages, Ivy and Cameron became so important to each other, and I loved watching them fall in love because they were so pure together. She also spent a lot of time with his parents and siblings, and it was so heartwarming to see all of them welcoming her, as her family situation is so different.

I had the best time reading Head Over Heels, and I'm already looking forward to reading the rest of the series, especially with the way this book ended. I'm curious to see how it will change the characters! Ian's book is coming next, and we finally know a little more about his love interest. He is probably the sibling who intrigued me the most from the moment he was introduced, so I can't wait to find out more about him! Also, I'm still rooting for Poppy and Jax to end up together. The few crumbs we got from them made me so giddy!

Now, if I can just find a man who calls me Duchess in bed.

GAH! I just finished HEAD OVER HEELS and I am just ruined and happy and so, so in love with this book. This is such a great Opposites Attract + Forbidden Romance (boss and client) that starts with a very hot elevator scene that I may never recover from.

Cameron is the ultimate Cinnamon Roll Hero who is wildly sexy, small town hottie, and who is always watching out for everyone else (especially his family). I am absolutely freaking obsessed with the way he falls for Ivy while fully aware of her sharp edges. He never once tries to soften her or make her anything other than exactly who she is. And Ivy is so damn lovable as she navigates figuring out where her place is and navigates her own grief.

One truly wonderful thing about the large family in HEAD OVER HEELS is their flaws. It's not a 24/7 uncomplicated love-fest with the Wilders. There are disagreements and differences and all kinds of shit, but they come together as a family should, flaws and all.

HEAD OVER HEELS is seriously steamy and the off-the-charts chemistry and eventual dirty-talk is next level amazing. This book had the perfect amount of smut for me, but smut that made sense in the story. You know. like, MEANINGFUL smut.

I loved this book and give it a very enthusiastic 5-stars from the stingiest star-bitch you know. Just read it and you can thank me for the recommendation later.

When Ivy first reaches Sisters, Oregon, she wants nothing more than to wrap up her assignment, leave the town, and never look back. Given her upbringing and the expectations her father had from her, it was difficult for her to show emotions and let anyone in, always fearing that her vulnerabilities would be preyed on, especially when she was raised to lead in a field dominated by men, who often underestimated her.

As she spends time with the Wilders, working on restoring her grandparents home, she realizes what a family should truly be like. How there shouldn't be terms and conditions to receive their love, and how home is a place where she should be able to be herself.

Cameron was genuinely amazing, and I loved him. He took over the family business and did his best to be everything his family needed, making sure they all had what they needed and always willing to help everyone out. Being responsible for his family's business meant he didn't get time to date, and neither was he interested—that is, until he met Ivy. I loved how he knew right from the start that there was more to Ivy than she was willing to admit, even to herself. He tries to keep his distance from her but can't stop himself from wondering more about her, wanting to know everything she was hiding behind her hard exterior.

The analogy that Cameron gave with respect to the abused dog Poppy had rescued and how it took time for it to trust and believe that not everyone was out to hurt it was so fitting because Ivy didn't even see the extent of emotional abuse she had endured because she had no point of reference to understand. Which is why she kept everyone out and stayed by herself, but she yearned for that connection and affection deep down.

Their relationship grew gradually, where initially Ivy kept Cameron at arms length, unwilling to admit any feelings she had towards him. But as she got to know the kind of man Cameron was, she slowly started accepting her feelings for him. The whole time Cameron waited patiently, but he acknowledged his feelings for her and knew he wanted her in his life but didn't want to push her for anything she wasn't ready for. It was difficult for her to feel like she could be something different and not disappoint the people in her life.

He was so careful with her, always honest and patient, letting her figure things out by being a constant presence by her side and supporting her through everything. He made her believe that she could do anything she put her mind to and that she didn't have to work herself to the bone to gain anyone's favor in his family, and just being herself was enough.

Just like in book one, I loved the Wilder family. The bond between these siblings, even when they aren't related by blood, is just so strong and so pure that you can't help but feel like you want to be a part of their family too. The siblings were all in each other's business, messing and meddling, but also being supportive and protective when needed.

Just like in the case of Ivy, everyone welcomed her, made her feel comfortable, and accepted her as she was. Except Ian, who took a long time to warm up to her, but he does eventually.

The whole family getting together for the fall festival was just so bittersweet. I'm happy they all got that chance to be together and give the entire family the chance to say their farewells. This book made me so emotional. After reading One and Only, I knew what Tim's condition was like, but watching it get worse and watching the family come to terms with it was an emotional journey, and you as a reader can also feel these emotions—helplessness, denial, anger, and grief—along with the family members, especially with how close they all were.

I loved when Ivy finally confronted her father and set the boundaries that needed to be set for her own well-being and growth, both personally and professionally.

Small town, class differences, an ice queen and a man who works with his hands? Put it in my veins!
This started out with a (near) bang when the MCs Ivy and Cameron get trapped in an elevator and end up making out. Some time later Ivy gets an ultimatum from her rich dad and gets banished to small town Oregon. And who lives in said small town? If you didn't guess the hottie from the elevator then you can't call yourself a romance reader 😆

My first book by this author and while I enjoyed her voice and the writing was so engaging I couldn't put it down, it was too much of a slow burn for me. They basically dance around each other for 60% of the book and nothing much happens. The pacing and development of the relationship was way off and everything romantic happened towards the end. This is one of those books that I think are more women's fic adjacent with strong romantic elements than a full on romance. The reason I say that is because Cameron's family took up almost the entire book. It was about his dad dying and his extended family's handling of his impending death and their dynamics and Ivy finding her place in it. In fact the entire last chapter was about his dad's death and the funeral. Not my kind of happy ending. Overall, a solid read but I was never invested enough in the story and the MCs.
