In this book, Eddie Merrins, a highly respected teacher and player, offers golfers a total, yet amazingly simple, method for producing a mechanically perfect swing.
The cancer of golf shotmaking, says Merrins, is the player's attempt to control the moving clubhead with his or her hands and wrists, an attempt that is doomed to mis-align the clubhead, throw it off track and reduce its speed through impact. Problems that inevitably result including hitting from the top, slicing, hooking, sclaffing, topping.
Merrins' Method provides a clear solution to these woes. Moreover, it explains how you can readily control your shots' length, direction, trajectory and 'shape,' merely by the manner in which you swing the grip-end of the club with your forearms.
Merrins also explains just what proper wrist action is and how to produce it. He gives a simple three-step procedure that will assure you a correct grip. He details proper set-up and tells you how to use your legs. He describes tempo and rhythm and tells you hwo to combine these often misunderstood facets of the swing. He shows you how to apply the same principles used on full swings to pitch, chip and sand shots and putts, thus elminating many variables from your game. Finally, he tells you how to take your new swing onto the course and make it work.
This fine teaching tool has been around for awhile and has stood the test of time. There is a focus on solid analysis with clearly expressed performance and "mental clarity" goals. Mr. Merrins has been a well known golf instructor for decades and this manual reflects his deep understanding of the game. The lessons about the mental setup at address, of not thinking about "hitting the ball" but, rather, producing a consistent, effective result by "swinging the handle" and using the forearms to produce power, is essential to game improvement. Similar to the book in "Stack and Tilt" golf the tips in this book work.
But also like Stack and Tilt the tips in this book may not be current with what is taught today. The part that is different here is the "turn", when you take the club back.
Again this would be good for people who are just learning golf. It's a "system" of golf you need to commit to.
Much appreciate the wisdom in this golf book. As a 5 hcp golfer with 20 plus years of playing experience, I personally learned a lot. Brilliant and much appreciated !! Thanks you sir....
Very simple explanation of the golf swing. I feel a lot of modern teaching gets a bit complex which can lead to "paralysis by analysis" - I know I can fall victim to this. The Merrins Method is the opposite of this - I am willing to try this concept and see if it works for me.
40 year old golf instruction books are fun. This one is written in a clear style with some excellent illustrations. Author makes a convincing case for not grounding club in the setup a la Jack Nicklaus. All in all a fun quick read.
Interesting take in golf swing. Gave me some ideas. Nothing revolutionary. Recommend reading if you have time and are looking for an out of the box view of the golf swing.
