Personal Response The short story > The Little Gingerbread Man was a good short story. My nephew liked it because it was an interesting story with lots of details. It was a very easy story for kids that are just beginning to read. It was the first story I have read to my nephew.
Plot I read the story > The Little Gingerbread Man to my nephew Carson. In the beginning, an old lady was making gingerbread decorations, but it seemed as if her batch kept getting smaller every time. She thought some of the kids were stealing cookies from her while she let them cool off. When she set the cookies by the window to cool down the smallest one got up, jumped out the window, and ran off. The gingerbread man was guided by his friend the butterfly and had to run away from many different types of danger. The little kids chased him through the yard and he got away. Then they came across a fox. He seemed nice at first when he was carrying him across the river, but then he tried to eat him. The butterfly flew down just and time and saved the gingerbread man. They escaped every time because the butterfly carried the gingerbread man to safety.
Characterization The gingerbread man was the main character. He faced all of the danger and obstacles through the story. The butterfly was the other important character, he helped guide the gingerbread man. The old lady baking was the maker of the gingerbread man.
Setting The story took place in a kitchen when an old lady was making cookies. From what the story’s details had explained. I believe it took place during the summer because there was a butterfly that guided him throughout the story. It was nice outside, and there were kids playing. The setting impacted the plot because the gingerbread man escaped the kitchen while the cookies were cooling. The setting also took place outside where the gingerbread man escaped. Once he got outside he had to face many obstacles to keep from being eaten.
Theme The theme of this short story was fear. The gingerbread man had to run away from little kids and almost got eaten by a fox. Another theme of the story was friendship. The gingerbread man befriended the butterfly who helped him escape from being eaten.
Recommendations I would recommend this story for boys and girls ages 1-5 who were just starting to read. The story was very easy to understand and could help younger children learn to read.
The central theme of the story is friendship. It initially starts off with an old lady baking gingerbreads in her oven when suddenly a butterfly comes and takes away the last gingerbread man. The last one was unique in the sense that it was half the size of the other gingerbread men. Running away from the wild animals depicted in the story, he nearly gets eaten by a fox however the butterfly saves him and returns him back to his family. The butterfly represents true loyalty and honesty in the story. It also demonstrates that through loyalty in a friendship, one can attain success and happiness and this is why I enjoyed reading the story. By using animals as the main characters in the story, it also teaches sensible traits that us humans should have too and to also be careful of people who are evil - the figure of the fox represents a cunning and a greedy character. It is appropriate for children aged 5-7, as there are rhymes and chorus which repeat throughout the story which is quite entertaining for children. I would suggest that this story to be used during drama sessions and role play, where children can get the opportunity to sing the chorus too. Children will also get the opportunity to dress up as animals so the thought of creating animal outfits and changing voice pitches can be quite fun The book can be used in the curriculum and linked to PSHE (to be fair with friends and build honest and loyal relationships), art (creating various types of gingerbread men), food technology (making gingerbread men) and maths (using models of ginger bread man to help with their counting skills).
This is a story about a little old man and a little old woman, who lived in a cottage on top of a hill called Flowery Hill. The little old woman loved to bake. One day she decided to make gingerbread cookies. She put them in the oven to bake for approximately ten minutes. When she opened the oven to take them out one got up and ran away. The one that ran away said, "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread man." The little old woman tried to catch him and she couldn't. He just kept running and running. He ran through fields without her catching him.
There are only three characters in this short story. The first character is the little old woman. The little old woman loved to bake and have the house smell wonderful. The little old man was just there in the same house, but he's not around in the story. Finally, the Gingerbread Man is the main character in this story. He is the one that makes this story come alive.
This short story is placed in a little cottage on top of a hill called Flowery Hill during 1875. When the Gingerbread Man ran out of the oven he ran through a field of flowers and ran into a duck down by a pond.
I would strongly recommend this short story to elementary kids, because then they will understand what the older adults mean by saying "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me I'm the gingerbread man." This short story is a classic.
Run run run as fast as you can, can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man!
I just sat and read this with my little cousin for the first time, and I never realised that... I never actually knew the story behind the poem, "run run run...". This is a retelling of the classic tale that I... do not know of, both written and illustrated by Carol Moore.
First of all, I really love the illustrations, and so did my cousin. We sat looking at them for a little bit of time after finishing the book, and read it a second time, looking through all the illustrations as we did. Moore did a beautiful job with them, and it really helped bring the story to life. I was actually quite fascinated by the illustrations.
The story itself is of a gingerbread man, smaller than the rest of those in his batch, who wakes up as a butterfly calls to them, and begins on a journey, running away from being eaten, with a wonderfully happy ending. I would very much like to read the classic tale after reading this one. It was something that really made me smile, a simple story that just. Seemed so happy and carefree.
I would definitely recommend this for those who read with younger children, and you can read it for free here
This book is my number 21.85 out of 21.86 on my scale this book tells the story of the gingerbread man looking for friends and relates to anyone at any age ever. Because everyone has friends either good or bad hopefully good ones. This book is very good and every one should read it.
The Little Gingerbread Man is a delightful classic that has such a simple yet fantastic story. An old woman in her house decided to bake gingerbread cookies. While she was preparing her last batch of cookies, she ran out of dough and so the last gingerbread man was smaller than the rest of them. So the little gingerbread man was decorated with extra color and he had sat on the pan to dry with the rest of the gingerbread men. As he was drying, a butterfly came to rescue him so he would not be eaten. The butterfly and the gingerbread man go on an adventure through different scenes of nature while they are being chased by different characters such as people and animals because those characters want to eat him. Just as the gingerbread man meets a fox who insists he does not want to eat him but help him instead, the gingerbread man agrees to be helped. Before he knows it, the fox throws the gingerbread man in the air and the gingerbread man almost falls right into the fox’s mouth when out of nowhere the butterfly comes and swoops him up and takes him to a safe place deep in the forest. The gingerbread man thanks the butterfly very much and she in turn brings him to a little gingerbread home with a gingerbread man and woman. The gingerbread man and woman become the little gingerbread man’s parents and the little gingerbread man finally understands that he is actually a gingerbread boy. The new little gingerbread family lives happily ever after. I loved the pictures in this story because they were simple yet elegant. They portrayed the storyline within each illustration. The interesting part of this story is the first few pages of it. The little gingerbread man’s story does not actually start until the illustrator brings him to life through decorating him and through him finally becoming a conscious being. You can tell in the first page of the story that the gingerbread men that the woman is holding on the pan are not decorated at all yet. Through that portrait, the reader would not be focusing on the gingerbread men but rather they would focus more on the women. She is drawn with much detail and her old age is presented elegantly. The very end of the story portrays two gingerbread adults in a small gingerbread house in the forest. When the gingerbread man becomes a part of their family, I see this as a representation of the old women and her husband. The gingerbread man is simply finding somewhere where he feels completely safe. I enjoyed the storyline just as much as the illustrations because it really had the reader following throughout the entire length of the story. The action represented through the writing seems to show how the author was just as caught up in the action that she was writing about as her readers are. The author uses really wonderful verbs and adjectives that describe the action going on in the story. “…as one of the horses trotted over to the fence and whinnied.” Those words make me feel as if I can hear the horse moving right beside me. The author puts a lot of description into the story and really brings the reader right into the story itself. The character development of the gingerbread man is not as obvious as one might think. You have to dig deeper into the story to really see the gingerbread man’s character. There are no direct qualities stated in the story about the gingerbread man except for his size and his colors. As the gingerbread man goes on his adventure though, he starts showing his emotions through how he is feeling in different situations and how he reacts. When you see how he reacts in different scenes, you can get a view into the gingerbread man’s personality. How does he feel when certain things come up? What makes him happy and why. Is he brave, scared, mean, nice? You can clearly see that he is a proud character as he sings his simply song while running away from being chased by all the different characters in the story. The story of the little gingerbread man is a popular tale that any child would love.
The Little Gingerbread Man, written and illustrated by Carol Moore, is a classic folktale with a modern twist. We are introduced to an old lady who loves baking gingerbread and is so good that her food is often stolen by neighborhood children. One day she makes an extra big batch of gingerbread men, except for the very last one, who is smaller due to a lack of batter. After being iced and set on the windowsill to cool, the smallest gingerbread man escapes at the word of a friendly blue butterfly. A chase ensues in which various people and animals attempt to catch the gingerbread man and eat him, and he struggles to make it to safety. Finally, when faced with crossing a river on the back of a trickster fox, the gingerbread man's story takes an interesting turn.
This book takes on the style of a cumulative folktale, and the characters trying to catch and eat the gingerbread man accumulate as the story continues. The characters are mostly stock characters, with the most prominent ones being easy to understand based on small actions and descriptions. For example, the grandmother figure who makes irresistable baked goods, the good-natured friendly butterfly, and the trickster fox are all easy-to-understand stock characters. The traditional version of this story typically ends with the gingerbread man being eaten after getting too cocky, which teaches a valuable lesson about pride, but this story ends happily for the gingerbread man, demonstrating the aspect of folktales that allows a story to be continually modified while maintaining some basic structure. The altered ending in this tale adds an unexpected element to the plot that allows for a different set of meanings besides those found within the most common version of the tale, while still incorporating the takeaway ideas from the common version. The illustrations in this book seem to be watercolor, or some other form of paint, mixed with a pencil media. The images provide a range of viewpoints, sometimes straight on, where characters look directly at the reader in a demonstration of metafiction, and sometimes from the sides or even above, where the reader can see the way different troubles play out. For instance, the image in which the gingerbread man is hiding in tall grass and is eventually discovered by a dog with excellent smell is from an overhead point of view. The overhead depiction of the dog sniffing out the gingerbread man adds to the idea that the grass is tall and the gingerbread man is being careful not to be seen, because a side-view was not used suggests that such a view would be insufficient to see anything going on.
This is a digital story about and old man and woman who lived in a cottage on top of Flowery Hill. The old women loved to bake and decided to make gingerbread cookies one day. She bakes and bakes but everything that she seems to bake disappears. She puts the cookies in the oven to bake for a few minutes, but when she opens the oven one of the cookies got up and ran away. This little cookie ran while saying “run, run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man!” The little old women chased and chased after this gingerbread cookie but could not catch him. The gingerbread man becomes friends with a butterfly who protects him from every animal and person who wants to eat him. The illustrations in this book were composed of watercolors, which looked a little grainy. I personally think that a different paint or coloring tool would have been better for this story. I think that the main theme of this story is friendship. Friendship is expressed in this story when the butterfly becomes friends with the gingerbread man to protect him from being eaten. The butterfly represents loyalty and honesty. By using animals as the main characters, it teaches the readers sensible traits that humans should have as well. The rhymes and chorus that repeat throughout the story are interactive and entertaining for children.
“The Little Gingerbread Man” by Carol Moore starts off with a grandmother who bakes gingerbread cookies for the local neighborhood children. They come every day just to eat her cookies. The grandmother noticed that some of her gingerbread cookies went missing after she had put them near the window. Then one day she bakes a fresh batch of cookies and lays them near the window again. They introduced the second character who is a butterfly that helps one of the gingerbread men escape from the cookie sheet. Once they are outside the gingerbread man is soon chased by the hungry children. He outruns them until he runs into another animal. Throughout the book he outruns his enemies until he needs one of the animals to help him across the river. He then finds out that he can’t trust anybody except the butterfly. The butterfly then brings him to a place where he will live happily ever after.
This story is from an E-Book online. There wasn’t any distractions on the page while reading the story which is important for a child to understand the text. The story was very child friendly, there wasn’t many buttons you had to click on to get through the story. There was a left and right button to go back and forth and the book also showed the page numbers. This e-book was very simple and complex.
I found this e-book through magickeys.com and thought it was absolutely adorable! I loved the storyline about the gingerbread man who turns out to be a boy and is united with a family at the end after almost being eaten so many times. He starts out as the old woman's treat, and in the beginning she talks about how she thinks these naughty kids have been taking her gingerbread and even a whole house that mysteriously disappeared. This last special batch of gingerbread men had one gingerbread smaller than the rest because there wasn't enough batter. This small one just so happened to be the one to leave with the butterfly and outrun all the kids and animals in the outside world that were trying to eat him. The butterfly was his only friend and saved him from being eaten by the fox and brought him home to his gingerbread family where the gingerbread house had disappeared too! I loved that this e-book had nice sized clear font, and illustrations on each page. There was no audio though to this book, which I think could've enhanced it and helped first time readers. On a positive note, it allows the reader to go at their own pace with big arrows at the bottom that say "turn page", unlike the other e-books I've read that are only at one specified pace with no option to speed up or slow down.
The Little Gingerbread Man is about a little gingerbread man who goes on an adventure with a butterfly in order to avoid getting eating. He outruns children, horses, a dog, and is almost outsmarted by a fox, but his butterfly friend protects him, leading him toward a place where he won't have to worry about getting eaten. This story puts a creative spin on the original fable, especially given that it is an ebook, but still stays true to the original elements of fantasy. The story centers around a gingerbread man who comes to life, which clearly isn't something you'd see in the real world. The animals can all talk, and the butterfly is magical and has super strength. The gingerbread man goes on a quest, another thing that is often seen in fantasy, and is almost outsmarted by a villain, the fox. We want our hero, the gingerbread man, to survive without getting eating, but he has to face the odds that are against him in order to live. Because of that, there is a subliminal message of "good vs evil" and of the underdog who defies the odds, which are both elements seen a lot in fantasy books. One thing I thought was interesting was how the fox fit his stereotype. He was sly, sneaky, and cunning, something that is typical of foxes in folk lore. Overall, I thought this was a very cute book and a nice update to a classic story.
The Little Gingerbread Man is a very cute story. An old woman bakes gingerbread cookies, cakes, houses, and most of all gingerbread men and women. The old woman bakes and bakes and bakes but everything she bakes seems to disappear. As the story switches narrative views from the old woman to the gingerbread the reader finds out that these gingerbread men and women are magical. They can walk, talk, and run like any other human being. One special small gingerbread man finds his way to a butterfly who he becomes friends with and who protects him from every person and animal who wants to eat him.
The first thing that drew me to this book was the use of words to describe smells and sights. The words used make the reader feel like they are, in fact, in the kitchen with the old woman and the gingerbread goodies. The illustrations in this book look as if they were painted with water color, in my opinion hey could have used a different type of paint or drawing utensil so the pictures didn't look as grainy. I do love the little gingerbread man though. He is a very determined, confident little cookie. Whenever he's getting chased he knows he can out run whatever's chasing him and he does, every time.
In this story a little old lady continually bakes ginderbread men. However, she always has the problem of them disappearing. One day a gingerbread boy was prompted by a butterfly to come with her. He did, and wherever he went something was trying to eat him. Luckily for him, he always escaped, sometimes even with the butterfly’s help. In the end of the story, the butterfly unites the gingerbread boy with a family and they live happily ever after in a gingerbread house.
This book does encourage interaction between parent/child since it can be read aloud by the parent. This book did not have audio so that makes it a perfect candidate for being read aloud. The e-book also engages the reader since it has whimsical illustrations to accompany the story. The e-book was very easy to use, although the website was very limited in what it provided. For this book, there were no multimedia features other than a turn the page button. Therefore it was strictly to enhance the narrative. Other books on this website did have games which would then be mainly for a game. Because this book did not have any real multimedia functions, it was not distracting. The text was in a legible font and very easy to read.

1. What is the book about? One day, an elderly woman was making gingerbread men. A sneaky butterfly came to the window and convinced one of the gingerbread men to sneak out of his house. The gingerbread man did so but as soon as he followed the butterfly, everyone wanted to eat him. Kids, horses, and dogs were chasing him all throughout town. However, the butterfly was being a good friend and just wanted to bring the gingerbread man to a gingerbread family. Once the gingerbread man went inside the house, he knew he was home.
2. What are the illustrations like? The illustrations are so full of color. The expressions on the faces, the background details, and gingerbread house make the book pop! There are a lot of diagonal lines during eventful parts of the book, which are placed there to create chaos. During the more calm parts of the book, there are more squares and rectangles. 3. What can you take away from the book? This would be a great book for kids. There are a lot of words on a single page but young children will fall in love with the pictures. I think it's a good book to read because this is a common classic tale; many people know the story. There aren't any morals in this book but it's just a fun and silly book to read
Everyone knows the story of the gingerbread man running as fast as he can and gets eaten by a slick fox. Well this story tells that tale but with a twist as the gingerbread man escape the fox due to a friend The butterfly. She is his companion throughout his entire journey and as she rescues the gingerbread man she returns him to a Gingerbread man and woman. Becoming reacquainted the gingerbread man who is now gingerbread boy lives happily ever after with his family. Carol Moore does a great job in her interplay of text and image because in the story she mentions the of the wings on the butterfly didn't appear to the true beauty of a real butterfly's wing. I felt this truly showed how deep of a connection a author can have with a book when they are the author and illustrator. Another key detail about this book is the idea of a girl hero which i thought played well into teaching young kids boys and girls are equal. For example I worked at a daycare where a kid Adrian could benefit from a reading such as this because he always acted superior to girls. Moreover this book adventures to retail the classic story of the gingerbread man into a happy ever after.
The little gingerbread man by Carol Moore was a very cute classic book. The book is about an old woman who lives in a little house on top of the hill and she loves to bake. One day she makes gingerbread men, and one of them runs away, she tries to catch him, but she can't. The gingerbread man runs through many obstacles, he field of flowers, ran into a duck by the pond where a fox almost eats him, but the butterfly saves him. This short story I read online, and it was nice to read it online, because it was easy to read the words and it still had images to follow the story. Usually I like having a hard copy to read, but this was different. It wasn't interactive, but I still enjoyed the story. I would recommend this tory to young elementary students, who may be still learning how to read, since it is an easy read.
I read this book on magickeys.com and I had just read Rainbow Fish on an online website and I did not have the same experience. Rainbow Fish was more of a video and this was just a page you just scroll down (more set up like a website) and then to get to the next page you had to click a number. I thought this is fine but I really enjoyed how the video worked better. I wish it either looked more like a book or had more interactive options.
Anyways this book was a cute story. The old lady bakes gingerbread cookies and she thinks its the kids stealing the cookies, but really the butterfly is helping the gingerbread man escape. It is overall a good read and enjoyable for children with a very happy ending!
This digital book contained ten pages with one illustrated picture per page. It is nice having online access to this familiar story. Having books digitally available helps the students pull up books to read if they do not have physical books at home. I liked this quote that the old woman said, "They don't understand all they have to do is knock on the door and I'll give them my gingerbread treats." I felt it could be used as a teaching moment. This book also can be used to teach sequencing. As the book is read students are able to catch on and choral read the repeated parts in the text.
About a gingerbread man who tries to escape from being eaten by people and animals. his friend, the butterfly saves him from the dangers and takes him far away to live with a gingerbread family happily ever after. The gingerbread man uses the famous phrase "you cant catch me, i'm the gingerbread man". I enjoyed the book as it reminded me of the importance of friendship and how those who care about you will help and protect you from dangers and harm. I think children aged 6-8 will enjoy this book, especially when it is read out by the teacher at story time, it has potential to inspire children with a 'moral of the story' type of message.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This e-book has a happy ending instead of a moral lesson. If you believe gingerbread can run and talk this is a great book. The e-book does not make the book any better or enhanced. The arrows allowed for the reader to fluidly move through pages. It did not use multi use media to enhance the story, and did not increase the shelf life of the text if it is not a book already. The gingerbread man with a sappy family feel good ending, not for me. Kevin c
This is the cutest book to read to children around the Christmas holiday. It is so fun and entertaining and keeps the children on their toes. It is funny that the Grandmother thought that the children were taking her cookies, but it was really the butterfly. This is so funny for younger ages and such a great story to read around the holidays.
Cute children's tale of trust and friendship. Easy and quick read. I read that book online so it was easy to find. There was one illustration on each page.
