Ripples is a picture book by Leigh Anne Fortner, and illustrated by Anastassiya Selezneva. The book begins with a girl, at the side of the water, as the rain starts; she watches as the rain drops cause ripples in the water. She decides that she wants to make a change in the world, and begins by planting some seeds.
This is a special little book, about trying to change the world with kind acts. I’ll admit that the ending brought a little bit of a tear to my eye. Admittedly, I think that some kids might not understand the point. As an adult, I could see what it meant, even if it wasn’t as clear as it could have been. But young kids might not understand; I know that at four or five years old (the age range on the Amazon store says it’s recommended for 4 – 8 years), I probably wouldn’t have understood because it was a little bit vague. I would have liked to see the story expanded a little bit, for the author to explain it a little better. I do really appreciate the point of the book. I think that many readers will be considerate of their actions, and maybe consider doing more kind acts.
One of the great things about the book is the way the illustrator has made little borders for some of the boxes of text. They give a bunch of the pages a really fun textural element. They’re themed around stuff like wildlife; leaves, seeds and flowers, as some examples. And a lot of the other illustration elements are beautiful, too. I liked the opening pages and seeing the pond, with the lily pads, and the way the rain drops caused the ripples. They were illustrated well, and I think they look very pleasant.
Overall, I like the book. I appreciate what the author was trying to say, and that it was a very positive theme. My only fault is that the point felt kind of vague, so some people might not understand it. Though I know what the author was aiming for, and I think it was a pretty good attempt. The illustrations are beautiful, and very calming. I loved seeing the work the artist did with all the wildlife.
This short beautiful book tells a big story! Its simple concept that a small action can cause big ripples or changes in the world is a great encouragement for children of any age. With bright and colourful illustrations, this book will engage readers, spark new ideas and conversations about making a difference in the world around us. Children often think their actions do not matter because they are still so small and young, but they do! The example in the book—giving some flowers to a soldier—can soften his heart and make him smile. Imagine if this multiplied by 2 or 10. This small outcome may lead to bigger changes in people's heart, and may even change people's minds and actions, possibly end war and suffering. If we all decided to do one small act of kindness, what a big difference we can make! We simply just need to start by making one small ripple. Encourage the children (or adults) in your life with this book and start making ripples!
Great Message for a Good Cause! Ripples will touch your heart and inspire hope. Ripples teaches little ones that even the simplest act of kindness can make a big difference. Wonderful story!
