In Christ: 364 Meditations on Passages From the New Testament

Rate this book
This book is an invitation to live life "in Christ." This obviously involves self-surrender. Not merely the surrender of our sins, our bad habits, our wrong thinking, our wrong motives, but the very self behind all these. Dr. Jones has written 364 page-a-day devotions which lead you into a deeper understanding of just what it means to be "in Christ"--the differences it can make in your life and your total effectiveness; what happens to life and living when you are "in Christ" and what happens when you are "out." The human interest stories and illustrations used to develop the theme of the book will appeal to all who seek a daily word of inspiration--for personal mediation or for group worship and discussion. As in previous devotional books by Dr. Jones, each meditation ends with a brief prayer and an affirmation for the day.

The Lord continuously speaks through ESJ’s writings. Kind of annoying at times because the Spirit really digs in. Thankful and would recommend to anyone.

some good points but

Jones is revered among Methodists and rightly so but he makes some silly statements in this devotion. It might be that the material is dated

On the glidepath into America’s 2024 Presidential election, I am recommending this daily reader with a quotation from it that I hope will show why. It is this: “There is no alternative. It is Christ or chaos. He rules or we ruin. If love will not rule us, hate will rubble us.” The entire volume reads like that. There were “truth bombs” on every page. FYI, my Kindle version of this book is far preferable to my hard copy because the Kindle uses DATES for each reading (October 29) instead of DAYS (Sunday) which my hard copy uses. What an improvement!

A dear friend and mentor gave this book to me so I read about half of it. Everyone once and awhile Jones says something that makes things click, but most days it wasn't ground shattering. I'm not big of devotional literature (not b/c devotional literature is bad in and of itself, I just don't know of any great ones), but I think I would read this before "My Upmost for his Highest" or something else.

For the Christian who desires to grow, I would recommend reading Scripture instead of this.

Great story of the conversion of Admiral Sato of Japan after the Emperor disclosed that he was not divine

[Some Christians] have just enough religion not to keep one from sinning, but enough to take the joy out of it. p. 52

The people outside the church are unforgiven sinners and the people inside are forgiven sinners. p. 52
