Shaede Assassin #4

Against the Dawn

Rate this book
Six months can feel like a just couple of weeks when you’ve been away in another realm. Literally.

Now that Darian is back in Seattle, she’s ready to face the life—and the man—she left behind. But it’s not going to be easy when a ghost from her past shows up looking to wreak havoc on Seattle’s supernatural crime scene.

Darian isn’t as careless as she used to be, though. She and Tyler, her sexy Jinn protector, have come a long way in the trust department. And it’s a good thing too—because when Ty contracts her to assassinate a wickedly powerful supernatural who goes by the name of Mithras, it will take all her faith in Ty, and herself, to get the job done.

While Darian does whatever it takes to get to her mark, Xander, the Shaede King is busy making plans of his own. With Darian’s attention divided between Lorik’s secrets and her mission she might not be able to stop Xander from doing anything in his power to separate Darian from her sworn protector and in the process, destroy his own kingdom…

The previous book ended with Darian’s life in shambles, and now in AGAINST THE DAWN, she’s back from her stint in O Anel and trying to pick-up the pieces. The opening chapters were very emotional, both for me and the heroine, because not only do readers get to reconnect with their favourite characters after the long wait between installments, but getting to do so through Darian’s eyes was extra poignant. There’s a lot going on in Amanda Bonilla’s latest novel with multiple plot threads, romances, a new supe or two, and of course, Tyler never disappoints.

I’ve been DYING to learn more about the Jinn ever since I first started reading this series and was introduced to the mysterious Ty. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that all is revealed, but enough details are shared that I don’t feel quite as in the dark as I did before. Unfortunately, most of these juicy morsels are spoilers so, moving on… Some light is also shed on the inner workings of Xander’s court, and oddly enough the center of the Shaede Kingdom is in Alberta, Canada! I KNEW there was more to Banff’s freakishly blue water than glaciers (i.e. magic). And, Bonilla’s fab world-building doesn’t end there with the addition of reapers, werewolves, and even a Minotaur to her supernatural hodgepodge. The author really pulled out all of the stops with this one!

The love triangle continues in this installment even though Darian made her choice in book 3 because some guys just can’t take no for an answer. On top of neglecting his kingdom in favour of his romantic pursuit, Xander also decides to get the PNT involved in his rivalry with Tyler. Needless to say, the whole thing gets rather ugly, but as much as I love the sexy Jinn, I can’t help but wonder if the Fae King’s selfless intentions will have an impact on Darian’s decision. Xander proves that he’s more than just a pretty face in this novel, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m starting to feel some sympathy for the bugger. Only one love scene makes an appearance, but after a year of pent up sexual frustration, quality more than makes up for quantity in this instance.

There’s no shortage of action in AGAINST THE DAWN with Mithras, the Synod and Lorik stirring up trouble. I was kind of peeved at Darian for falling for the latter’s ploy so easily, especially given their history and that she never fully trusted him to begin with. Every SHAEDE ASSASSIN book needs at least one good brawl, and the roman god of warriors certainly delivers on that front. I was happy to see Asher play a more active role in this series after having enjoyed his character in the previous novel, and Raif was great too even though he’s struggling with his loyalties a bit. I thought we’d kissed the Azriel related problems goodbye several installments ago, but apparently not because the Rakshasa are back and out for blood. Poor Darian.

AGAINST THE DAWN takes the SHAEDE ASSASSIN series to a whole new level with more mayhem, more action, and more romance—heck just plain more everything!

Against the Dawn is the fourth book in the Shaede Assassin series by Amanda Bonilla.

After the events in Crave the Darkness (third book) Darian is in dire need of a change of scenery, with that in mind she goes to O Anel to visit Raif’s daughter, Brakae. Time in Fairy moves different than on this side and after only two weeks with Brakae she knows is time to go back to her reality. After she’s back Darian realizes her two weeks in Fairy were six months on this world and many things changed in that time.
Tyler feels guilty about what happened to her and is willing to break some laws imposed by his superiors to be with her and Xander is still hoping to rekindle their relationship or at least to continue where they left on. The last thing Darian needs is to think about relationships, but she knows sooner or later she will have to decide, especially now that Xander is putting his throne on the line for her.
Another change she finds at her return is Lorik. Her friend of many years back has been waiting for her and wants her to work for him as his security. Darian can’t understand how Lorik is still alive, he’s supposed to be a normal human. Years may have passed but Lorik is still the same spoiled troublemaker she remembers, maybe working for him is just what she needs to get her mind off her troubles, but life for Darian is never that easy.

In this installment Darian is suffering from severe PTSD, she’s trying to deal the best way she can but it hasn’t been easy. The “good” thing about the bad things that happened to her is that she learned her lesson. She learned she has many people that love her and are there for her whenever she needs them. She also learned she can and should count on others; she doesn’t have to do everything alone. Her recovery hasn’t been easy, but she’s on the right path and with a bit more work she is going to be fine… only if she can catch a break. (Mrs. Bonilla please give poor Darian a little break!).

I’ve been Team Xander since the very first book and book-by-book my love for him has only grown. Even though I know Xander is not the man for Darian he needs somebody like me some part of me can only hope, especially after this book. I know some things he did look a bit sly, but at the end everything he has done for Darian he has done to protect her and keep her safe. Team Xander forever!

If I talk about Xander I have to talk about that other man… yes, the one I didn’t like, and yes I use “did” because Mrs. Bonilla is sneaky and made me like him in this book. Damn you Mrs. Bonilla. In Against the Dawn we see a clearer picture of Tyler and his feelings for Darian and I can’t believe I’m saying this I like him for Darian. *cries*

On this installment we also see Raif, not as much as I would have liked but enough to remind me how much I like him and to make me happy for Darian, she is lucky to have him in her life.
We also see more of Asher and every new thing we learn about him made me like him more and more. I think he needs a novella… Did you hear me Mrs. Bonilla?

I can’t say much about Lorik without giving spoilers away. Let just say Mrs. Bonilla did a great job writing him because his actions made me experience an array of different feelings, some good and some others… not good at all I want blood.

Every time I read a book by Amanda Bonilla I don’t know how she can top off her previous books, but she does it again and again, that was the case with Against the Dawn too. OMFG! What a ride of a book. Since the first page it grabbed me and took me on an emotional ride that left me expended and dying for more. Mrs. Bonilla is a master storyteller who knows how to use her words to play with her readers’ feelings and let me tell you something I have said many times before about her… SHE IS EVIL!! EVIL!!!

Against the Dawn’s end is not the cliffhanger of the century but it easily can be the cliffhanger of the year. How dare you do this to us Mrs. Bonilla!? How dare you!? As you can guess by now, the end of Against the Dawn was a WHAT? NO? OMFG! NOW WHAT? OMG I NEED NEXT BOOK NOW!! kind of end.

Saying I’m eagerly waiting for next book is the understatement of the year. I’ll be stalking following closely Mrs. Bonilla updates for news about the new book.

Against the Dawn is a great addition to an amazing series and a book all urban fantasy lovers should read. Even though Mrs. Bonilla does an excellent job recapping important events of previous books I don’t recommend you to read Against the Dawn as a stand-alone book. To get the full effect of the wonderful world and characters Mrs. Bonilla created in her shaede Assassin series Against the Dawn should be read as part of the series.

Bloody Hell Man!!!

I wanted to strangle Xander in this book, he got far closer to Darian than I wanted (can you tell I'm a Tyler girl - all the way!!!) but then he turns the books on the very last line!

What a cliff hanger!!

Darian, as usual, finds herself in locked combat with her marks and in a tie with Lorik, a sneezy guy from the first books, a guy who was a human friend to Azriel... Lorik is back and wants Darian's help but we know that we can't really trust him, we know he should be long gone from this world and yet he's still around... and we find out why...

Tyler is now facing his crime that he committed towards the King, Xander! He's also making the Synod unhappy...

Asher is now Darian's body guard, whether she likes it or not, lucky for Asher, she thinks he is a great kid... with lots of magic... but his job is not an easy one...

What a book - what an ending and the characters are just amazing...

I need the next book now!!!

Against the Dawn, Shaede Assassin #4, by Amanda Bonilla
Grade: A

“Darian, there is no man, no magic, no force of nature in this world that could keep me from loving you.”

Once again Amanda Bonilla has delivered an amazing urban fantasy novel with Against the Dawn, the fourth installment of her Shaede Assassin series. Against the Dawn picks up a few weeks after Crave the Darkness ended. Darian is back in Seattle from her time in O Anel and is slowly picking up the pieces of her life after being a prisoner of Kade, as well as dealing with her relationships with Tyler and Xander. Darian is a shell of the assassin she used to be but she is determined to get back to her old life and makes Tyler put her right to work. A person from Darian’s past is her new assignment and what seemed like an easy task in now putting Darian in more danger than she ever thought possible.

To say I am a fan of this series is a huge understatement and I was so excited to be able to read and review Against the Dawn. Crave the Darkness left us with a lot of unanswered questions as well as wondering if Darian would be able to heal from the injuries that kade inflicted on her. I was so nervous that Darian would lose some of her edge but it was wonderful to see her build herself back up to the amazing smart ass/bad ass that she is. We get to see Darian deal with the ramifications of her actions from the last three books, as well as how she is dealing with Tyler and Xander and the multitude of emotions they both have on her.

I didn’t know exactly what to expect from this book and I was worried that a lot of it would be Darian putting herself and her relationships back together. I was happily surprised to see her go back to work and get to solve some unanswered questions as well as kick some ass in the process. There are a lot of familiar faces in this book as well as some new ones like Steve the Werewolf, which had me dying of laughter. There was never a dull moment in Against the Dawn and I could not stop reading until I finished the very last page.

Amanda Bonilla has created a very unique world with this series and each book gets better and better. I am always so excited to read about Darian but find myself getting sad as I near the end of the book because the adventures that Bonilla takes the reader on are addicting and I never want to leave. Like the rest of this series, this book is full of twists and turns that will have you guessing until the very end and even then keep you guessing and wondering what will happen next and when can I get the next book. Xander will be getting his own novella in November 2014 which I am dying to get my hands on and I think it will be great to see this world from a different view point. If you are a fan of urban fantasy you must pick up this series and I promise you will not be disappointed.

In the fourth instalment to the Shaede Assassin series, we find Darian returning to Seattle after her visits Brakae, Raif’s daughter in O Anel. After two weeks there, she discovers that six months have passed in the real world and many things have changed since she left.

First and foremost, she learns that Xander is barely controlling his kingdom. In an effort to fix that, he wants Darian as his queen. However, as you know if you’ve followed the series so far, Darian and Xander share a special relationship that isn’t necessarily sexual. While Xander tries to convince her of that anyways, I don’t really think either one of them want it. Xander sees Darian as a powerful tool, something to possess and he is a man who will do anything in order to obtain that power. On the other end, the last thing Darian needs is someone trying to use her abilities and brain in a way to benefit themselves.

Things with Tyler remain strained. After deciding that he doesn’t want to stand around and watch as Darian puts herself in danger time and time again, Tyler walks away and that causes immense heartbreak for Darian. However, I have to admire the way Bonilla pours emotions into her characters. They make mistakes and they can be selfish and blind at times as well, but that only makes them more appealing in my eyes. It’s interesting to watch how they will come out in top.

Raif is the standout character for me. Every time he was in a scene, it just made me smile. I like what he is for Darian and what he does for the series as whole.

While the ending does leave room for more unanswered questions, Bonilla creates a fun-filled rollercoaster ride for readers to enjoy.

*My Thoughts*

Oh, Amanda, you know I adore you! You know I love this series, and would recommend it to ANYONE who actually pays attention to me and my reviews! You know I adore Darian, and the way she finds a way to kick ass and take names while managing to have two rather intense men at her beck and call in Tyler and Xander. So, why, why I ask would you leave us hanging with THAT ENDING?!?!? My poor overworked heart can not take much more. Even though you are doing the whole Xander novella in November, book # 5 can NOT come out fast enough!

Tyler never disappoints, and neither does Amanda Bonilla in this fourth installment of the Shaede Assassin Series. After a much needed break in O Anel, Darian is back and forced to face not only her recent traumatic experience with the now deceased Kade, but also someone from her past is back and stirring up trouble for her. Aside from the obvious problems on her plate, she's also got to deal with Xander and Tyler, both of which are dealing with their own problems and desperately want Darian for themselves. "Against The Dawn" is the most action-packed, must read in the series yet and will definitely keep you up past your bedtime!

This is book four in the Shaede Assasin series and sees the heroine Darian returning to Seattle having been away for six months. A lot can happen in that time and what she returns to is chaos as Xander the Shaede King is fighting to hold on to his crown . Xander still wants Darian as his Queen but right now she's not in the right place to tackle that problem. Before he died Kade did a number on her and Darians not sure if she can ever let anyone close ever again.
Needing to get her life back on track Darian seeks out Tyler the Jinn who her very soul cries out for and undertakes an assignment for him. Unfortunately it puts someone from her past who by rights should be long dead back in her life. Lorick is human so what's he doing still alive? He claims it's sorcery but Darian knows not to totally trust her old "friend" but helping him is helping Tyler also so she tries to tread carefully.
Darians life has never been easy and torn between two very different men is not helping with her issues at all. When Xander takes action though it puts all their lives at risk and directly in the firing line is Darian!
I both love and hate this book! I love the plot as Darian undertakes her assignment and how she deals with the various paranormals involved. I also absolutely adore the supporting characters of Asher and Raif and don't get me started on my feelings about Tyler(sigh) and Xander (thud) but the end! No no no! It's the dreaded cliffhanger ! And ok I admit this grudgingly it was a fabulous way to end this book but still so cruel for the readers!
So this instalment gripped me as Darian struggled to come to terms with past events whilst not hurting those she cares about. She does care for Xander but he's pushing too hard. As for Tyler well I think I can see where this is going and strongly suspect Darian will always carry a piece of him! There's so much detail to these stories and this book is no exception. Wonderful world building , flawed characters , amazing humour (Star Wars anyone?) and a storyline that drags you in and does not let go . I personally am addicted to these characters and the crazy lives they lead . If you want a really good series to get your teeth into then get these books! Definitely recommended!

It's been a month full of books with humongous cliff hanger endings. I am sad to report AGAINST THE DAWN is on that list. CRAVE THE DARKNESS left Darian pretty destroyed emotionally and escaping to O Anel. AGAINST THE DAWN starts off with her facing her life again.

No body expects Darian to be unaffected when she gets back and she really isn't. Thankfully she has a lot of people there to help her when she needs it. On top of that, someone from her past shows up and is set on a path Darian doesn't want to go along with but has to to get what she wants. Little does she know his reason for jumping back into her life are far worse than she could have imagined.

The love triangle that shouldn't be, continues in book 4. Darian has made it clear that she has picked Ty but Xander refuses to listen. Although his rule is in question he refuses to leave unless Darian goes with him and that isn't going to happen. Xander is convinced that he needs to get Tyler out of Darian's life and he uses past events to try and accomplish that. Unfortunately it leaves Darian unprotected at the worst possible time. Drama, drama, sweet drama. You cant help but get sucked into it all.

AGAINST THE DAWN was emotional, drama filled and suspenseful. The action was plentiful and if you were hoping to finally get a glimpse into the Jinn you're in luck. Just when things start to smooth out another obstacle jumps up to halt its progress. I have a feeling book 5 just might be more emotionally draining on the characters than CRAVE THE DARKNESS was. Bring it on!

~I got this book from Amanda Bonilla in exchange for my honest opinion. She even knew that I had not read the three books before Against The Dawn and she still gave it to me and told me I could still try. So sweet of her. Note: She didn’t ask me to read them, I asked :)~

Well… like I said I have not read the books before Against The Dawn. Surprisingly it still worked out well. I had some struggles in the beginning, but the main character Darian made me read on. After a few chapters I could read it without any major problems. Still I feel like I missed a lot of awesome stuff in the previous book, especially the whole story with Kade. And that particular story sounds soooo interesting.

Anyway, I immediately liked Darian. Prior to Against The Dawn she went through some disturbing experiences and she is still not over it, so she is really wary of everything in the beginning and can’t stand body contact. I couldn’t either. On the other side she is really strong and does have really cool friends. I especially liked Tyler.

He’s a jinn and really intriguing, also he’s Darian’s… well, I guess boyfriend and bound protector. I need to know more about him. Like seriously. Give me more :)

The story was fascinating and I bet had I read the first three books it would have been even better, but since I didn’t I can’t give it 4,5 stars, so I’m settling with 4. I’m sure the next one will be even better.

On that note one little thing you probably want to know: Against the Dawn doesn’t end with a HEA, but a cliffhanger. A mean one.

Good thing I already own the next book.

**Slight spoilers from books two and three**

In Crave The Darkness (book three) Darian pays a harsh price for her actions in Blood Before Sunrise (book 2) when her Jinn lover and boss, Tyler, walks away from their relationship after repeated warnings he cannot take her lack of self-preservation anymore. The blows keep coming as Darian has to deal with the legal ramifications of her actions and her job of keeping a fellow Shaede and her unborn child alive puts her own life in danger and the results are tragic.

Against the Dawn picks up where Crave the Darkness left off and once again submerges us into the dark and dangerous world that Darian lives in. Seattle is a seething pit of powerful supernaturals and heading towards a war that may destroy them all. Action packed with intrigue, suspense, and a healthy dose of love, anguish, and betrayal, Bonilla answers some much need questions while setting up the storyline to take a turn that will leave readers stunned by her audacity. *smile*

Darian suffered unimaginable horrors at the hands of Kade and left to spend some time healing with Rafe’s daughter in O Anel. After three weeks (six months human time) passed, she came back to Seattle only to find Xander’s kingdom in shambles and him fighting for his crown. Xander still wants Darian as his queen but Darian is in a place right now where her vulnerability is at it’s highest and she is only hanging on by a thin fragile thread. Darian decides work is her best bet for not dealing with her issues and contacts Tyler for an assignment. This brings Darian face to face with someone who by all accounts should be dead. As Darian works her assignment, she learns that once again she is only a small part of a larger picture, an expendable part, and destiny has an interesting way of reasserting itself when you least expect it.

Bonilla has accomplished so much in this noir world she has built. Ever changing and expanding, we have seen our heroine grow right along with this world, though her own past and stubbornness has caused her much grief during this learning process. The appeal for me of this series is the flawed characters Bonilla has created. We aren’t inundated with perfect men and women who swoop in and save the day. These are people with problems. They make the wrong choices and pay a heavy price for them. They are at times selfish, blind, and often hurt those they love the most. Darian is probably the most complex of them all. Her past has left her heavily scarred with severe trust issues. She wants what every person wants deep inside the place where no one can see-she wants to be loved. Yet at the same time, the thought of being loved scares her to death. She struggles with the thought of having that much responsibility/power and her previous actions cement that. She is the perfect UF heroine in my eyes-a will of steel with a deep vein of vulnerability. She doesn’t have unbeatable powers and will fail on occasion only to rise and fight again. She strives to do the right thing concerning everyone but has learned the hard way that sometimes losing is the only way you can win.

The love triangle is still in play but each installment seems to be edging us closer to a choice. I hate love triangles, especially long-term ones, but this one bothers less than most as I don’t feel that Darian is leading them on. She loves Tyler and has only recently understood just how much. Xander is more of an irritant. I honestly feel Darian made her choice but the decisions made at the end may change that. The sexual tension between Darian and Tyler is still VERY hot and sensual and now that she has acknowledged what is in her heart, it becomes even more appealing. Bonilla does a fabulous job of blending the romance without making the story dependant on it. After this book, I still find myself rooting for Tyler, even after his less than stellar decisions in Crave The Darkness.

Xander, the king of the Shaede nation is STILL a pain in Darian’s arse and she doesn’t hesitate to let him know that repeatedly. Though we know Darian cares for Xander, she is not in love with him and I don’t feel he is in love with her. I think his attraction is more based in the challenge. She does not bow willingly to his authority. She is a strong opinionated female that excites his more base natures. He wants to own her. Possess her. Bend her to his will. Xander per usual uses his power to try to force Darian’s hand but his actions towards the end has me wondering what exactly that man has up his sleeve.

A complicated secondary cast only heightens the excitement of this story. Raif remains a favorite character of mine. He is an important part of Darian’s life and I like that she has someone in her corner that wants nothing from her but her friendship and for her to be safe. I enjoyed Asher’s development and look forward to seeing more of him. Darian can’t have too many true friends in my book. Anya annoys me. That is all. We meet some new characters and learn some information about old ones in here who further expand on the complicated world Darian lives in. I am very interested Kaii and seeing what Bonilla has in store. Tyler, of course, is my guy and I feel for him so much. Poor guy can never seem to catch a break.

This entire book is a speeding out of control roller coaster filled with twists and turns that will keep you clinging to your seat. The ending is a shocking cliffhanger that left me blinking in surprise as Lorick’s actions are fully exposed. The main conflict is resolved, but once again, Bonilla uses that to open another doorway, leaving us with unanswered questions and concerns. I look forward to the fifth book in this series-title and release date to be announced.

Rated 4.5 - Against the Dawn review, plus reviews for Shaedes of Gray, Blood Before Sunrise and Crave the Darkness are also available at my blog, TBR Mountain Range.

In the fourth book of this entertaining paranormal assassin series we get to know Darian's weaknesses as well as her strengths. Two strong men love her beyond her expectations and we finally get solid clues as to which one Darian might choose, if given a chance... If you love urban fantasy with a twist, then get the first three books to read before this one for a great reading adventure.

If you haven't read SHAEDES OF GRAY, BLOOD BEFORE SUNRISE, or CRAVE THE DARKNESS, books one through three in the SHAEDE ASSASSIN series, then you might want to do that before reading this review. I won't spoil AGAINST THE DAWN, but it's difficult to write a review for a series this intricate without spoiling past books a little bit in setting up this preview.

Book four begins with Darian recuperating in the Faerie Realm with her good friend Raif's daughter, Brakae. Time passes differently in the two worlds so although it has only been a couple weeks in O Anel, Darian has been gone for more than six months back in Seattle in the mortal realm. She really hasn't had enough time to get over the shame she feels for what happened to her at the end of book three, but she knows it's time to move on. Will her new companions, insinuated as fear and hesitation, ruin her ability to fight evil?

Darian shows all the signs of a victim of rape. Having been addicted to the Cambion creature who enslaved her, Darian's mind can't cope with the idea that even though she made choices, those choices weren't really of her own volition, considering the creature's ability to sexually addict its victims. The beginning chapters are very poignant and throughout the book the reader can feel her confusion as Darian learns to accept her fate.

When she arrives home at her apartment Darian realizes that the Shaede King, Xander, has completely remodeled it while she was gone. Her normal dark environment is now earthy and light. Not that she appreciates his interference but it may help her start over if she can get used to it. In addition, Asher, her favorite warrior companion, has been sent to keep an eye out for her.

Xander's world is in an upheaval because of his refusal to go back to his kingdom. No one can get him to listen to reason and his obsessive tendencies toward Darian aren't helping the situation at all. Raif is beside himself with his brother's stubbornness and when he finds out how far Xander has gone to entice Darian to his side, he can't hold back his anger.

To add to the mayhem, Lorik wants Darian's help. Since Lorik is human, he shouldn't still be alive or looking the same as he did the last time Darian saw him. Can Darian work with someone from her past without memories of prior experiences resurfacing that are better left buried?

And then there's Tyler, Darian's Jinn. So much to explore and discover in this book because Jinns are a mystery and Darian is about to find out more than she imagined or hoped. Can they make a fresh start after what Darian experienced?

And that's just the beginning of this novel. Truthfully, it's so fun to read this series and I think AGAINST THE DAWN outdid its predecessors in many ways. For me, it was just what I needed to read. Maybe because it's like coming home when we're able to reacquaint ourselves with not just Darian's ever-changing developments but also reuniting with past favorites in a world that keeps evolving. There are some great paranormal surprises and awesome laugh-out-loud moments. One new character is especially funny with Darian, lots of snark that cracked me up, especially when Darian realizes who or what she's been dealing with. Nice twist and I hope we see him again!

I really enjoyed AGAINST THE DAWN for all its nuances, surprises, scary-evil creatures and laugh-out-loud moments, but I especially love Darian's character development throughout the series. She's hard-core tough but not without pain and love that makes her appreciate the life she lives and wants to resume. I know it's hard to imagine an assassin who becomes almost loveable but Darian has the history and inner growth over time to make it possible. I especially loved being back in this very creative urban fantasy world with all my favorite characters, adding in some new enemies to hate. If you don't know author Amanda Bonilla's evil side by now, you sure will by the end of this story. She's a wicked torturer with this novel's climatic ending and I still loved it, cliff-hanger included!

AGAINST THE DAWN continues the addiction, making this reader crave the novella coming out in November 2014.

My English review

You know what? I love this series… really! Since the end of the last volume, I could not wait to get into this one. But what was not my surprise when I learned that the publisher would stop releasing the novels… One of the saddest things and I was very afraid of not being able to read more adventures of the heroine while I greatly appreciate them. But Amanda did not leave her behind and she was able to present a new book. One thing is sure, it was worth it! The book is once again awesome!

Darian has just returned from two weeks at Brakae’s, but in reality, six months have already passed, and everyone seems to be waiting for her return. However, after what she lived with Kade, it is very difficult for her to deal with Ty and Xander, but nobody seems to take her desires into account. Trying to forget everything that has happened, she will try to launch headlong into work, asking for a new mission. Yet nothing is going to end well when Lorik, a character from her past, comes in asking for help. How has this human managed to live after so many years? And why is he coming back precisely at this time? These are questions that haunt us throughout the reading and whatever we might think, the real answers are given at the end of the story. But she might find her answers by working for him when she discovers that he knows her new target. I confess that I was really intrigued by this character and I had some difficulties to understand exactly what he wanted from the young woman. And even if we understand why she is helping him, I would have been much less comprehensive than Darian, given the situations in which he puts her. Yet it is true that in the end I was really surprised, and I did not expect at all such a turnaround from this character who seemed so boring.

But this is not all of course because in addition to all this, Xander and Ty are also there to put their grain of salt. While Ty remains patient enough with the young woman, leaving her time to regain her brands, he also hides many secrets from her. Oh yes, because Darian has many questions, and it seems that nobody wants to give her the answers. However, after some researches, we discover some new elements about the Jinn and I think we will discover even more thereafter. But one thing is for sure, troubles are only beginning! Oh yes! It is very touching to see the two characters together, trying to do their best to have some kind of relationship. Then there is Xander… I really struggle to choose between the two. It is true that they are very different and we often hate Xander by his actions, but he also has something that draws us to him irresistibly. And while the feelings of the heroine are messed up, it’s the same for ours. While Ty is patient, it is very difficult for Xander to wait to see what the young woman will choose to do. And although it is hard to understand his bluntness, we know that he utterly loves the young woman, and is even willing to risk his kingdom for her. But Darian is not an easy woman and given her fear to confront her feelings and the problems with her past relationship, she refuses to be dictated her choice.

Oh yes, you surely understand that we have a lot of things here and I had a great time with this new volume, but one thing is sure, Amanda Bonilla is terrible and the cliffy at the end of the story makes only want us to jump on the next novel. Oh yes, because a final event completely changes the game and I’m very curious to see what will happen. Darian understands that she has to make choices, even if they are not simple. She will also evolve and work on herself to learn to trust and share her secrets, something which is still quite difficult for her. So yes, a heroine that we continue to love, some colorful characters and an exciting plot. I can only recommend you this series, it is a gem! I hope the next story will come soon because I’m really impatient!

Absolutely addictive! I loved this book!

Darian's spent two weeks with her friend Brakae in the faerie realm of O Anel to recover from the trauma in Crave the Darkness. When she returns home, six months have passed for everyone else. As she starts to reconnect with her friends, she discovers that Xander's been so preoccupied waiting for her to get back that he's neglecting his kingdom. He wants to pick up their relationship right where they left off and doesn't seem to understand how traumatized she still is. Her reunion with Tyler is more successful, but the Jinn council has forbidden their relationship. Then, as if her personal life isn't complicated enough, her old "friend" Lorick shows up making demands as well. Darian's torn between her desire to help her friends with their problems and the need to focus on her own.

Sometimes when a character goes through an ordeal like Darian did at the end of the last book, much of the next one is focused on the emotional aftermath. Although Darian does have nightmares and moments of panic when she recalls Kade, this book doesn't wallow in her angst. The story is fast-paced and hard to put down. I very nearly read it one sitting.

I also really enjoyed getting to know Asher better in this book. He not only provides a different perspective on Xander and the Shaedes, but his history is really interesting in itself. I hope he continues to be Darian's bodyguard/sidekick in the future. A few of the other supporting characters get a little extra time on the page as well, which I loved.

I was surprised how many elements from the previous books in the series pop up in this one. Everything is explained well enough that I don't think readers would get lost if they started here, but the world is richer with that background knowledge. I actually wish I would have reread the series leading up to this book just in case I'm forgetting something. I really enjoyed reminiscing about where we've been but I also feel like it's hinting at something big still to come. (There are 2 more books planned in the series.)

Cliffhanger Alert! The end of the last chapter was like a right hook to the gut. I started to feel a little better during the epilogue, only to get hit with the left. That was just mean, Amanda! Hurry up with that next book.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The fourth novel in the Shaede Assassin series is a riveting and action packed read. A ghost from Darian’s past threatens havoc on Seattle’s supernatural crime scene and Xander is trying to do everything in his power to separate Darian from her sworn protector and just may destroy his kingdom in the process.

This steady to fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers on their toes with lots of suspense, action, drama and a love triangle. The author brings her fascinating supernatural world to life with well written events and scenes that make the reader feel as if they are part of the story. Tensions build throughout the story on several different fronts as Xander’s trying to get Darian and hold on to his kingdom, Tyler got his only problems on top of protecting Darian and supernatural badasses are in town to create evil mayhem. The strong compelling characters are easily understood, draw the reader deeper into the story and arouse their curiosity ensuring they want to know more.

The attraction between Tyler and Darian is still going strong, but Xander’s sure that if Tyler is out of the way that Darian would be his. The reader can’t help but get caught up in their drama as they complicate their lives and bring down kingdoms, very entertaining and I really don’t know who to root for as I am fascinated by them both, not to mention all the other intriguing men in Darian’s life. The reader’s really have to empathize with Darian and everything that she’s been through, that has sorely tested her confidence.

I really enjoy this thrilling series and intriguing world with its charming characters although you would think that Darian would ask a few more questions sometimes, cause trouble just seems to want her as much as her men. And of course, I have to impatiently wait for the next one to find out if she’s get out the next spot of trouble that found her after being betrayed at the end of the book.

This has got to be one of my fav series out there. In against the dawn, Darian is trying to come to terms with the recent traumatic events and trying to deal with the ramifications of the effect Kade had on not only her but the relationships she holds most dear.
Not to give too much away but Darian uses a person from her past to try and take her mind off things going on around her, but as he once did before Lorik causes trouble for Darian that she is forced to clean up. Not only does she have to deal with a pissed off king of the shaedes, who tries to buy her affections with a very deadly, and magically inclined pair of daggers but Xander's grudge against her Jinn, Tyler is about to come bite them both in the ass!
I really loved this book, as Darian, despite her being a supernatural badass, is surprisingly human and the events of her entrapment by Kade leave her captive of human emotions, panic attacks and the shame of her actions for a man she despised. Her love for Tyler and her conflicting feelings for Xander complicate matters and I found myself almost shouting when the book ended because I wanted more there and then and I wasn't going to get it!
Amanda Bonilla has created a world of unique characters, tainted heroes and a series that leaves you hungry for more. If you crave something different from the supernatural world then this is the series for you......brilliant, unique and masterfully detailed, Against the Dawn is a wonderful fourth installment of the series and I would very much like the fifth, as in now please :-)

This book had me reaching for it each night (my reading time). I even stayed up later or went to bed sooner at times to read.

Darian has returned from her stay in O Anel. It was two weeks away for her, but six months for everyone at home. Darian's still healing and adjusting after what happened. She has many friends who help in their own ways. Darian wants to work, and gets a job from Tyler.

And, her past has resurfaced. Lorik has returned to town and has his sights set on high goals. Goals he wants Darian to help him achieve. And after getting her job from Tyler, Lorik's goals may lead her to her job focus.

Truthfully, I didn't trust Lorik from the beginning. He is not one to trust to have your back. He just wants what he wants. And there's something more here too.

Oh Darian. She's stuck in the love triangle that shouldn't be so hard. She loves, wants, and needs Tyler. Xander... he just doesn't know the word no. So, with his position as King in turmoil in his kingdom, he has Tyler arrested for hitting him in public in the previous book. Xander is determined that he can protect Darian. That he can give her what she needs. And yet, in the end....

Darian is struggling emotionally. She's got a lot that's happened and getting past all of it, well, that may not be 100% for a very, very long time. If ever. She has friends that help her. But there's others that think they know best for her. Ugh. If I was her, I may give up on trusting anyone ever again. But Darian is open to her friends and appreciates them. She even gives others opportunities that come back.

With the way this book ended, I'm definitely on to the next book. I need to know what happens!

The nuances of this series ramped up in this the 4th book in the Shaede Assassin tales. Darian spent time away and came back a little less arrogant. She is still juggling Zander and Tyler. She has feelings for both and loves Tyler. But Tyler keeps a lot of secrets and now an old foe Lorik is back from the past asking questions and forcing Darian to become his body guard while he establishes himself as a criminal in Seattle. The jealousy the King of the Shaedes is feeling is causing problems with his monarchy. The court was supposed to go home but he won’t leave without Darian who isn’t trying to leave Tyler or his employment. She is still too trusting for an assassin but her gifts and skills will help her live another day.

This was a hard read. The after effects of what Cade did to her, heavy reading...especially if you understand even a small amount of that struggle. The emotional strain and then dealing with life issues. I mean come on, she gave herself two weeks verse the 6 months everyone else had. No time to deal, then she's up and fighting again.
Tyler or Zander....man I can't choose. I mean Tyler, he didn't deny he moved on, I kept waiting on him to say it wasn't true...nope he doesn't. Zander is a big headed over pressuring King but he would burn his crown for her....oh I wish she could have both!
