Okay, in addition to my review, there are a few things I need to point out about this one so you can be fully informed. Or, you could just go in blind and hate me later. If you’ve read the blurb, you know Dean and Mala have been best friends for nine years. And we get every bit of those nine years with secret, unrequited feelings on both sides throughout those nine years. So yes, your going to want to shake someone, knock some heads, yell, scream and throw your Kindle. But I promise, it will be worth it. So, so worth it!
If nothing else, the dog biscuit humor and dog name references, alone, make this worth the read. It's laugh-out-loud hilarious and just so much dang fun! Mala and Dean are so easy and comfortable with each other, and watching their friendship is pure joy. Their group of friends adds an extra layer, and some of the best scenes are the movie nights. (Poor Malcolm!)
There's also a serious side, with both trauma Mala suffered as a child and Dean's fears related to his job as a firefighter. We know that's no laughing matter, and the danger and devastation being in that line of work can’t be overstated. Seeing how two very different people relate to it in very different ways is as sobering as it is enlightening.
Now, while I don’t love the idea of the hero and heroine with others romantically, in nine years of friendship there are bound to be other relationships. Okay, I can get on board, but I definitely don’t want the details. And while there is the barest minimum of detail during this nine-year friendship, it's an innocuous presentation and pivotal to the story. I’m definitely on team Smexy Details = Ick Factor, but it didn’t bother me in his context, so you can make your own decision going forward.
We get appearances from Darian and Rani (Adrift) and Garrett and Bella (Ascend) as well as a few others we've gotten acquainted with. But the sweetest, most poignant, and often the most humorous scenes are with beloved Grams, who provides wisdom and practical guidance with a quick tongue, sassy attitude, and heaps of love.
You’ll laugh, you'll cry, you’ll blush, and you'll be frustrated, but it will be one of the most memorable reading experiences you’ll ever have. Whether you go blazing in blind or you take the carefully controlled burn approach, I have no doubt you'll love Dean and Mala as much as I do. Sweet and swoony, humorous and heartfelt, and all-around amazing, this will be one of your all-time favorite reads!
