Rob Nesbitt's sci fi horror thriller, Beneath, is a blinder of a scary yarn.
He was here to harvest the earth, long before humanity, hidden for millennia, hibernating in a cave. Freed, survival dictates a battle of wills with the new dominant species. But humanity now faces the deadliest predator on earth.
Utilising a small town setting, all the staples are there, from the feisty detective to the genius scientist. Beneath read like a mash up of those old black and white sci fi movies (like Quatermass) and Alien, by way of War of the Worlds.
Tense, claustrophobic, disturbing and compelling, creepy sci fi at its best.

This is the first time reading Rob Nesbitt's work, and from the get-go, I was drawn in to the story. Written with an engaging, sometimes humorous, flair that gave you just enough insight into a character's back-story so it had you rooting for each one and their fate. Set against a visually rich background near Wales, it's clear the author knows the area well, and where better to have a hibernating alien awaken deep in the myriad caves. Fast-paced, engaging, character-driven, visceral, and immersive. And what an ending! Looking forward to his second book in the Moreton Scientific series.

Good story, read well. Probably won't read any more of the series, but the story itself was good.
