A remote inn. A bad storm. My millionaire boss. And me.
How did I get here, you ask? I took a job as Will Hale’s assistant. Will is the rich genius who manages the rock band the Road Kings. Working with rock stars is the coolest job I've ever had.
Will is oblivious to the fact that I’ve had a crush on him from the moment we met. Too bad he’s so smart he’s clueless, because everything he does makes me swoon.
He doesn’t seem to notice. Except for that one time… But we don’t talk about that.
I can’t take the pining anymore, so I quit - on the same night we’re trapped in a storm at my family’s inn.

In the land of bookbland of late, this book made me feel good. I adore genuinely nice people in my stories because its satisfying to read. Will Hale and Luna were awesome / normal individuals, and I was dying the entire time for them to hook up while they were secretly crushing on each other.
Kissing her, in the end, was as natural as breathing. It had to be done.
A spin off of the Road Kings Series, What Happened Last Night can be read as a standalone. This is a workplace romance with a very wealthy Will who's left the corporate life behind and just wants to be. Landing a job as a band manager; he's finally happy and settled. His gorgeous, capable assistant is the cherry on top.
Could this be the best job ever cos Luna certainly thinks so. An amazing work environment and a boss who's a gentleman and appreciates her. So she'll ignore the petty crush and all the lovely things Will does for her until they end up in a wardrobe acting like horny teens...
It didn’t matter that we were both fully clothed, that all we’d done was kiss. Had there ever been a moment in my life more perfect, more erotic than this one? It was completely unsurpassed.
Mature characters, amazing chemistry and two smitten people. Gah it was sweet and silly especially when you meet Luna's family. (My Big Fat Greek Wedding anyone??) I freaking love well meaning, yet meddling families and a man who can stick around and declare his love though that mess!
I found it difficult to get into this story. First, the trope annoyed me. Will is an introverted millionaire, so he had to fall in love with his assistant? He couldn't have met a cool musician or had an enemies to lovers with the head of a marketing company? Second, Luna's insta lust annoyed me. The only way a woman could love Will is if it's insta?
As the book progressed, I really loved Will's pov chapters, especially with Stone. I also loved the various Road King scenes.
I found Luna's family, specifically her 3 mid thirties brothers who act like high school bullies, unbelievable. But it made for some great scenes where Will shows he's a genius :)
To summarise, it was worth reading as part of the Road Kings series. But I liked it less than the others.
Standalone (everything is explained, you don't have to read the previous books. But it certainly adds a lot). 1st person dual pov. No violence. Steamy.
It’s almost impossible not to give this or any other book by this author less than 5 stars.
This is the fifth book in the Road King series. I wasn’t sure we would get another book as all four members of the band got their stories. But I’m so glad we got this book.
Will has been hovering around in the previous books as a rather mysterious character. It isn’t until we read Reverb that we learn he’s the younger half brother of Storm, guitarist for The Road Kings. And his main purpose in every thing he’s done up to that book is to, well, get to know his big brother.
He’s already made his fortune; he’s a genius and knows a lot about a number of different things so now he can do what makes him happy and that’s working for and with The Road Kings. He’s uprooted his life in New York and moved to Portland. Will is the sweetest, nicest, most unassuming hero I think I’ve read and I dare anyone reading this not to fall in love with him.
Luna, our heroine has though she calls it a major crush. She works as his assistant and sees right from the beginning that he’s a very rare kind of boss and very special indeed. And unbeknownst to her, Will has quite the crush on Luna. But being her boss and such a great guy, he doesn’t want to overstep the boundaries.
Watching these two manoeuvre around each other is delightful. It’s wonderful to catch up with the Road Kings and see how they’ve all embraced Will and because they can see how much Luna means to him, they include her in their circle. The other side characters, Luna’s bestie, her interfering older brothers and even her annoying over involved mother are richly drawn and add greatly to the joy that is What Happened Last Night.
I’ll never be able to successfully describe how much I love this authors books and how I sigh in contentment as I finish each one.
Just when I thought Denver was going to be my favorite book boyfriend forever, in walked Will Hale. He’s a socially awkward, video game playing genius. And he’s absolutely perfect! Will is finally living his life for himself. He’s not doing what others expect. He’s taking on managing the Road Kings. A job that won’t make him a lot of money, but he already has plenty of that. It is a job that makes him happy. He’s also connecting with the brother he only recently learned he had. Luna is finding her way. Getting some distance from her crazy, overbearing family. She starts working for Will, and is instantly smitten. He has no idea how amazing he is and Luna is doing her best to keep her feelings for her boss in check. It doesn’t take long before they are both giving in to their desires. Sweet and sexy read from beginning to end.
Ebook. Purchased. 3.5ish? I probably would have enjoyed this more had I realized it was book 5 in a series? It was fine but I didnt feel the connection to the characters that I maybe would have if I was invested in the series. Also he has 1 tattoo and the level of fawning and hoopla made about his “bad boy ink” was laughable.
If you love a sweet, flirty, slow burning workplace romance between quirky, made for each other characters, then Julie Kriss's latest book is going to be right up your alley. What Happened Last Night is Will Hale's story, spinning off from her amazing Road Kings series. His story can stand alone, but if you can't resist an excellent rockstar romance, put this bingeworthy series on your list. You won't be sorry.
Will seemed to have it all- wealth, success and a high IQ, but something always felt like it was missing in his life. He made some big changes and is right where he wants to be now, happier than he's ever been. It was so cool to see Will thriving in this new, creative environment with a career he loved and his found family fueling his passion. His assistant has some mad skills, but her sunny, outgoing personality and understated beauty were driving him crazy....try as he may, he can't stop thinking about her.
Luna McQueen can't believe this is her life right now! Her new boss is a unicorn- a kind, generous, easy going gentleman and by extension, she's plopped right in the middle of a wildy popular rock band's exciting, chaotic universe. She loves this job, the best she's ever had, but crushing hard on her boss is not the most brilliant idea, especially when Will seems oblivious to how she feels in his presence. What a clueless pair they are!
I've been dying for the scoop on Will Hale for a long time. What made this mysterious character tick was on the mind of every fan of the Road Kings series and he did not disappoint. Let me tell you, this quiet, genius level multi-millionaire had some surprises up his crisply pressed sleeves, so seeing what was going on inside his head and peeling back all those layers was tons of fun and full of unexpected twists.
What Happened Last Night would not have been complete without Luna's nosy, interferring, but well meaning family. They sure did keep her on her toes. And those over-protective maniacs, also known as Luna's older brothers? Well, they added their own brand of mischief to this feel good, swoonworthy story.
Luna and Will were so adorable together, with that awkward flirtation that turned into off the charts chemitry and hot, hot steamy passion! What a perfect pairing of two unique souls, finally finding their true other halves. I'm hoping to see Will and Luna again, along with a few glimpses of the Road Kings, in whatever comes next. It was a blast seeing the band and their ladies, with all their witty charm, hanging out with their new 'partner in crime', sharing in the blossoming tale of love that was Will and Luna's romantic adventure. More of everything please, Julie Kriss! I loved reading an early copy of this great story!
Aaaahhhhh, this book is truly marvelous! I loved Will and Luna! And I loved seeing the Road Kings again, all paired up with their lady loves! What a magnificent and entertaining book!
Will cut all his ties to his previous live in Manhattan and came to manage the Road Kings. He wasn’t making millions anymore, but when he met Stone and the band, something clicked in him, made him move to Portland and for the first time in a decade, he’s happy and content.
“But when I learned who Stone was, when I listened to the Road Kings, I’d felt a shift deep in my chest, and the words had surfaced, unbidden: So this is what’s been wrong with my life all this time.”
Luna came to work for him and found that this is a great job and she’s decided to stay hired at all costs. Which at the moment means not giving in to the attraction she feels for her boss.
As we read Luna and Will tiptoeing around each other, we get regaled with instances with each Road King member, with their partners, and with Luna’s family which is very particular. Her parents and aunts are very invasive. Luna’s brothers are a tad annoying, very protective of their little sister, and quite ridiculous in their attitudes to Will and in their challenges. The hiking/fishing trip was a hoot! I loved how Will rose to the occasion and how Stone conspired to help his little brother conquer and persevere.
Loved the Toto Torture idea!
Will is a quiet man, accustomed to feeling inadequate. He’s a genius but doesn’t have people skills, so he’s a bit clumsy around Luna. And yet, they click together, understand each other perfectly, complete each other. I loved them as a couple, found them perfect. The whole book is wonderful and entertaining, a wonderful experience. And below, a photo from the author that perfectly embodies the image I had of Will. Brilliant!

What Happened Last Night is a spin off of the Road Kings Series and can be read as a standalone. This story was fantastic from beginning to the end. What Happened Last Night is heartfelt, passionate, fun, emotional, delightful book and an enjoyable read.
Will and Luna are instantly smitten with each other trying to hide their feelings and crushes. These two are trying to find their way, more Luna who wants to live her life on her terms. Will is taking over managing the band Road Kings, leaving his corporate life behind. They challenge each other and make each other better. Will and Luna were both battling with attraction which also included self-doubt/worth because neither actually was aware how unique and beautiful they are. I love that they are real and natural. The pace of the story and fun cast of supporting – secondary characters added to the story and development.
Very well-written, enjoyable, sweet, sexy, intense / entertaining with amazing characters, banter, second chance and romance.
I thought this series would be done after we got each member of the band's story but I am very happy that we got Will's story also. It was so much fun to get to know him better and still get some more time with the Road Kings themselves. This was a great addition to the series I felt.
Will is legit a genius and he has that quirky personality that you assume people who are super smart have. He's a little awkward, a lot serious and often gets lost in trying to find solutions to problems. But he loves music and will do anything for the Road Kings. Luna on the other hand, is a little bit more of a free spirit although she is super organized. She likes to wear vintage dresses, shop estate sales and has a loving but overbearing family. She runs Will's schedule like a tight ship after being hired as his new assistant. The only problem is that she has a crush on Will from her first meeting with him. She keeps it well hidden but as the two work more closely together, Will starts to notice Luna also. This is a bit of a rarity for him as he is used to no distractions. He also doesn't know how to work the employer/employee relationship along with a romantic relationship. So now he has a new problem to figure out especially when Luna threatens to quit. That is unacceptable to Will so he will find a solution to keep Luna in life at any cost.
Definitely a good read if you are familiar with the series. I felt the ending was a little abrupt and wish there had been more to their ending but I loved the book regardless.
What Happened Last Night (Road Kings Book 5) by Julia Kriss is about multi-millionaire Will, who is backing the Road Kings rock band and jointly owns a recording studio with them. Will is venturing into a new life in Portland, Oregon, and trusts his new personal assistant, Luna, to keep him organized and run interference with phone calls, mail, email, and keep track of all his appointments. Luna is the youngest of a family of three older brothers, nosy parents, and an extended family that knew no boundaries when it came to interfering with her love life. Both Luna and Will had past partners that only checked off the boxes of what each was looking for, yet without love and passion, both experienced a meaningless relationship, and each found themselves single. Fighting an attraction for each other leads to a kiss and, later, a rainy night spent together at Luna’s family B and B. Will purchased each retreat room for a week to have it to himself. From that moment of a shared kiss, Will and Luna’s life changed, and a romance blossomed. There are LOL moments: the band and their lady love to make appearances, and I loved seeing and hearing from them again. Family drama is prevalent, with a needy ex-girlfriend with spicy times making for an afternoon delight story that should be savored chapter by chapter until the words “the end.” Julie Kriss is a master at ting romance regardless of the genre all deserving of the highest star rating possible.
What Happened Last Night is a sweet, sexy, and heartfelt addition to the Road Kings world, centering on the adorably awkward genius Will Hale and his smitten assistant, Luna.
Will is a breath of fresh air—a socially awkward, video-game loving millionaire who’s finally stepping out from under everyone else’s expectations and choosing his own happiness by managing the Road Kings. Luna, his assistant, has been secretly crushing on him from day one, charmed by his brilliance and kindness. Watching her struggle to hide her feelings, and Will being so obliviously endearing about it, was pure fun.
When a storm traps them together at Luna’s family inn, the chemistry that’s been simmering finally boils over. The result is a romance that’s as swoony as it is steamy, with two genuinely good people figuring out how to take a risk on each other. I loved how supportive and open they were once they finally admitted their feelings—no unnecessary drama, just two people realizing they’re exactly what the other needs.
This story was lighter and less angsty than the earlier Road Kings books, but it still had the emotional depth and humor Julie Kriss writes so well. Plus, the glimpses of the Road Kings band members and their growing found-family dynamic made it feel like coming home.
This book charmed me. It’s a boss/assistant romance. They are both instantly attracted but “we can’t because he’s my boss/she’s my employee.” There was some getting to know you time where they unravel each other secrets. Then some heavy flirting, but still holding back. And then they finally give in and spend a long weekend together. I was worried the book would go into stupid tropes that usually go along with this type of book. But the author’s writing was fun and their relationship was cute and funny. The H acts like a mature adult and the two of them have great communication. I got this for free but now I’m interested in reading the other books in the series.
My only complaint is that the cover model looks nothing like how I pictured the H.
I’m in love, and Will is the PERFECT book boyfriend! I’m a big fan of Julie Kriss and have enjoyed all of her books/series, but the Road Kings are my favorites. If you haven’t read the series, start with Duet and read the books in order before you read “What Happened Last Night.” This book is a sweet, funny story about Stone’s half-brother, Will Hale, who was introduced in Reverb, and is a gifted genius. Although he’s an introvert, he can be alpha in a unique way. Luna is funny and entertaining, and they made the perfect couple. The book has no angst but lots of good feels. It’s what I call a “feel good, glad you read it” book. I see potential for more books in the series and can hardly wait. It was so fun to see all of the band members and their significant others. Read and enjoy!
This is one of those fairly low-angst, slice of life, kinda love stories. So what if Will is a self-made multi-millionaire who walked away from his money-making life to manage a rock band and Luna just happens to be the perfect personal assistant there ever was that he stumbled upon through a job agency. But still, it’s a slice of their super unlikely lives.
They both have families that expect a lot of their kids. Will and Luna both know what it’s like trying to keep the people they love proud of them, though their family styles are very different. It’s a shame that it took these two thirty-ish years to find out who they are and what they want. But at least they get there.
I adored these two and really need to read the rest of this series now.
I debated less than 5 stars because the ending felt abrupt but I realized I was jolted by the ending because I was waiting in vain for the angst or misunderstanding or ridiculous break up but this was an organic relationship from start to finish (between Luna and Will) with the only ridiculousness coming from Luna’s family. Initially I felt robbed of the normal conflict in these books but holy sh!t if I don’t truly miss it! There were multiple times through the entire book that I laughed my @ss off and said out loud…OMG I love this book. This left me feeling good. 5 well earned fcking stars!
this started out so good! unfortunately it really lost traction. they define the relationship very early on which isn't to me taste but can still work. however from that point on almost all tension is lost. there is no third act break up, which i know is what the tiktok girlies want, however there is no dark night of the soul moment at all. the only thing is her adult brothers hating her boyfriend bc... he's her boyfriend? and it's not even like the couple actually view this as a threat, just an annoyance. plus despite dtr-ing early there is no i love you! that should be a CRIME in a romance novel.
This book was fine and while the scenes with Luna’s family could have been humorous, they were annoying instead and I didn’t like her family. Also, I haven’t read the previous books in this series, but I wanted to see more of the Road Kings, especially after Juliet joins.
I liked Luna and Will, but something about their interactions after they got together made them boring.
I don’t think I’m going to read other books in the series. While I’m interested in Juliet’s character, I don’t think her being new to the band is going to be shown enough.
Setting: Portland, Oregon MCs: Will Hale, Luna McQueen POV: both, 1st person
4 stars Well done! Been a while since I was immersed in the Road Kings. I liked this one a lot. Will Hale was an enigma for a long time. Billionaire. Genius. Nerd. Music geek. Turned out he was Stone’s brother. They seem to be getting along here. The whole band is getting along. Will is getting along. Luna has the craziest family and they give lots of comic relief to the storyline. Very over the top. She’s as sweet as she can be. And perfect for Will. Now, there’s a new, temporary bass player. I hope we get her story. Seems like it’d be a good one.

I like this band but miss the on road stuff as we see other people working on the sides. This was a cute romance but she was a little pushy with her demands at the B and B. Hope to see a good ending in the next book I look forward to reading it. The thing that gets me is the women making a big deal not to have kids and the guys fixing it so they can't. Having this stressed over and over bothered me as it felt like it was emphasized enough. Well I can't wait to see the band again in the next book.
I love this series. So glad we got Will’s story and we get to see that his relationship with the band and his brother is going strong. That he feels like he belongs. Add in Luna who not only is a great assistant but the perfect woman for Will. Her brothers and family are hilarious and they should get their own books.
Will and Luna’s relationship is sweet, sexy and fun. They compliment each other so well.
I didn’t know I needed Will’s story but this is the absolute perfect addition to the Road Kings series. I have a HUGE crush on Will now! His romance with Luna had me smiling and sighing and fanning my face. This is an undiscovered gem at this point so don’t skip it! 10/10 highly recommended for anyone who loves a good boss/assistant nerdy genius meets vintage sweetheart romance with a rock star vibe. Perfection!
The Road Kings' stories were so perfectly tortured rockstar romance, it's hard to follow that up in the same series with a business guy. However, this is a beautifully written book. It's a great boss romance, with some big messy family and light forced proximity. As always, Julie Kriss writes great romances, and both Will and Luna are great characters, but I felt like it was missing one little bit of struggle once they got together, beyond the boss/assistant problem.
I always knew that if this author would write 100 more pages, her books would be romance perfection. I love that this series has longer, more satisfying books - almost 300 pages compared to under 200. The series is great and the characters are lovable - a rock band with such heart. Will and Luna's story was possibly my favorite of the 5. He truly deserved a happily ever after. I loved: her family, his thoughtful gifts, and the closet scene!
Been in a bit of a book slump recently even with authors I know and love. Trying to meet my Goodreads challenge hasn’t helped but this book, omg I absolutely ,p loved it. Had a gorgeous complicated nerdy hero..yes he is, and a bright and equally nerdy dresser of a woman who has the whackiest family ever. Add in the down to Earth but equally fascinating Rock stars and I now have to read the rest of the series. Fantastic read and wish it had provided an epilogue.
1. I have no respect for characters who are too weak to stand up to their own family members. Luna's family walked all over her and she allowed it. Will had to stand up to them for her. 2. No matter how much “natural talent” someone has, they’re not going to be able to learn a sport in a few weeks, even if they have lessons every day. 3. The book only ended in a HFN; Will and Luna didn't even say "I love you" to each other.

Will came into the series as an unknown financial backer. Sienna's investigating skills found his identity and ever since Will's character has emerged. He is interesting and I found him likeable. In Road Kings he found a family that fits his needs. Luna is a good character. Her family is overbearing and intrusive. She and Will just work. This series has continued to keep me engaged. I am enjoying it.
Julie Kriss really hit it out of the ball park with this part of the Road Kings series. I really enjoyed What Happened Last Night more than the #4 installment! Love the leads and the interaction with the band too! Hopefully, #6 is in the works????
More of a slice of life approach rather than plot-heavy. I didn't mind it though as it seemed fitting for a series (I read this as a standalone). The main characters are extremely likely and the story is enjoyable if a bit simplistic.
I read What Happened Last night by Julie Kriss as an ARC and, oh, swoon. What a great story. I absolutely loved everything about Will and Luna. I loved the development of their story and how Julie Kriss so seamlessly added these two into the Road Kings universe. I see a new series in the future- let’s get Luna’s brothers married off!
