Standalone MM Best Friends to Lovers Hockey Romance

Being in unrequited love with my best friend isn't easy, but that doesn't stop me from doing everything I can to ensure he's happy and always feels safe, especially when flashbacks, panic attacks, and mental lows are part of his everyday life.

I'm the only person he feels safe with.

So, when his ex starts spreading rumors about him, I'm quick to do everything I can to bat those rumors away. To protect him from the nastiness of it all.

Which means I almost kiss him.

Almost.

Because I’m not the one who completes that kiss—

He is.

I'm not sure what that kiss means for us, but I can't deny that I'm hopeful and silently begging for a chance to be with him.

Here's to hoping we didn't mess up the friendship that I know he needs.

For the serious topic this book deals with, it was far from being developed as it should be, I felt almost offended for the victims who were actually through something like this, to be honest.

It definitely isn't as easy and manageable as this story implies, besides throwing so many OTT things into it killed any kind of potential the book might've had.

🟣 Best friends to lovers
🟢 MMC has severe PTSD, incestuous sexual assault survivor
🔵 MMC has an aversion to being touched, by anyone
🟡 MMC has erectile disfunction
🟣 Best friend has a magic dick that solves all of those problems in a matter of a few weeks
🔵 Hockey is a complete bystander in this story
🌶️ Some sex scenes, good; both vers

Sterling was raped repeatedly by his father when he was a kid, he was sold to other men for sex and then when rescued, he was adopted into a great family who pays for his therapy and really loves him. He's been dealing with ED since forever basically, he can't get it up and has never experienced sex.

Graham is his best friend who's been in love with him ever since they met so when Sterling tries to hook up with someone else and fails, Graham sees this as an opportunity and jumps in, tells Sterling he loves him and in a few short days these two become boyfriends.

So, no build-up, that was the main problem. Out of nowhere Sterling and Graham love each other. They dive into a full-on touching where Sterling refused to be touched by anyone for years. Suddenly, he doesn't have a problem with anything, not touching, not intimacy, not anal.

You can't really enjoy their story, because they jump so quickly into each additional new step in their relationship, that the whole idea soon becomes too OTT.

These guys are in college, yet they speak to each other with very out of character dialogues, things like

"There's plenty of warmth and intimacy to be had just by being together."

Or talking about Graham's sexuality, this one bothered me

"Everyone on the team knew I was bisexual, including Coach, and he'd just see it as me skipping out on practice and my team for a bit of fun."

So, if he'd skipped practice, everyone would assume he's just having sex somewhere because he's bisexual?

Wow.

It's not a hockey romance either, hockey is just something Graham does and it's not well thought-out and the epilogue again deals with them having kids - this time adopting, not fostering.

I think the story definitely had potential, but the author should've studied a bit more about the topic they've decided to talk about and really develop the story and the main relationship.

Sterling has been through something horrific that no one should. His trauma is affecting most parts of his life, including his dating life.
When he’s bullied and belittled by an ex, his best friend (and roommate) Graham steps in to defend him and inadvertently admits his feelings.
Things move fast from here. Too fast for me considering Sterlings past, but that’s to be somewhat expected in a novella.
I do however wish there’d been more buildup. Coming into an established friendship is always a bit of a tough one for me. It came across to me as Insta-love when there’s clearly been a long term progression of their friendship off page. It was jarring. Like I missed out on something.
But their HEA was well deserved.

I think the heavy topics in this would have been more fleshed out and delicately handled in a full-length piece, but this hot and heavy novella certainly uses some heavy triggers to pluck at your heartstrings.

This is a short, sweet and emotional romance with strong characters in Sterling and Graham. The author pulls at your heartstrings with Sterling's flashbacks when he tells some of the things that were done to him. She paints her scenes vividly and delivers a heartbreaking story that does end with a happy ending. While there are many triggers I do recommend reading.

Really well done for packing so much feeling and hurt/comfort in a short novella. I would have loved to read more about these characters as they were both so very touching, Sterling for his strength surviving his demons and Graham for his unwavering support.

This book was everything and will hit you square in the feels. Please read the disclaimer at the beginning before you continue reading because Sterlings trauma is hard to read. It's just graphic enough to make you want to possibly throw up and definitely punch something/someone.

Sterling had a horrific childhood that no one should ever have to experience. I'm extremely glad he was adopted by a loving couple that made sure he had everything he may have needed to help him heal. When he started college he got roomed with Graham. Graham became his best friend and his safe space over the years. Graham is the definition of stability and comfort. From the beginning he was aware of Sterlings triggers and needs and never once shamed him for any of it.

Sterlings trauma has affected his life, especially his dating life. After a triggering experience with a boyfriend, this now ex decides to start spreading rumors about him as payback. Poor Sterling starts to panic and mentally spiral after the whole ordeal. Graham is having none of that and of course defends Sterling multiple times then decides to show the ex what he missed out on. When he leans in to kiss Sterling he still stops and waits for him to make the choice, never wanting to add to Sterlings troubles. Once Sterling completes the kiss, it's on from there for these two. Graham is loving and patient with Sterling, never rushing their intimacy or interactions.

The story may feel like the relationship is rushed but these two have been roommates for almost three years before they start dating. They've also been in love with each other for that length of time as well. The epilogue and bonus story are sweet additions to their love story. You get to see all the good things come to these boys after college and living their dreams.

2.5⭐

Sterling has been through hell when he was younger and he's still struggling with the triggers and trauma every day. He's immensely grateful for this best friend and roommate Graham who always has his back and knows what he needs.
Graham has been in love with Sterling since their first years as roommates, but with Sterling's past and their friendship he knows he can't risk it. But when Sterling's ex spreads rumours and Graham steps in to protect his friend he starts to wonder.

Before I write down my opinion down, I have two important things to say. First of all READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS! This book contains some very triggering subject and if you don't like that or if it makes you uncomfortable, please don't put yourself through it.
Secondly, I know trauma looks different for everyone and that triggers can differ. My review is in no way meant to downplay the horrible things some people go through! I just give my honest opinion on the writing and plot of the book, and I will do my best not to offend anyone while doing this. If I did, please tell me, so I can do better❤️

With that being said, I think it's important these kind of subjects are covered in books, since trauma can be invisible. Not everything leaves a (visible) scar. This book shows how some triggers might always be there, but it also shows you that with the right person you can experience everything a "normal" person can.

However I felt like the relationship was rushed in this book. I know Sterling and Graham have know eachother for more than two years and they trust eachother, but it still felt to fast for how easily Sterling got triggered the other time. For the plot it would have been nice to have more background.

To my opinion, Sterling's whole story needed more background too. I mean I kind of know what he's been through, but in the way it was written felt flat and like even the author didn't knew the whole story. The trauma was just there and didn't really serve a purpose other than showing how it can look (excuse me for my wording).

I know how important a safe space it and how important it is to have someone you can trust and who cares for you. But Graham was a bit patronizing and always cleaning up behind and in front of Sterling. As I said I know he has a rough childhood, but there won't always be someone to shield you from the real world.

It was nice to see the trust and love between Sterling and Graham though and I think they're cute as a couple.
And again this review is by no means a way to offend anybody or to downplay trauma and triggers!

~ Normal is overrated ~

~ I love you, Sterling. I love you with every fiber of my being. I want to always be your home. Your safety. I want to always continue being your reason for the rest of our lives. By giving you this ring, I'm promising to always be yours. To be the support you need. To give you a bright future and always be a safe place for you to land when life gets overwhelming ~

I have mixed feelings about this story. I found it on TikTok, and the premise was super intriguing: college roommates, one with severe trauma and PTSD who can’t stand being touched by others, the other his hockey playing best friend. Not gonna lie, my expectations were high!

I genuinely liked both Sterling and Graham as characters. It’s clear from the start that they both have feelings for each other, but are both scared to open up about these feelings. Sterling’s trauma was heart-wrenching to read about, and the way Graham respects Sterling and seems to always know what Sterling needs was really sweet. It was clear that they were meant to be, even before they got together.

The pacing seemed a bit rushed to me. It reads as very insta-love, even though it’s clear that a lot of the buildup to them going from friends to lovers is off-page before the story starts, as it’s taken years to build the kind of trust and comfort Sterling needs to be able to stand Graham even touching him in a casual way. When they both did tell the other how they felt, their relationship progressed very quickly, and it almost felt a bit juvenile. They didn’t get straight into a physical relationship, but once they did, they went straight to advanced stuff which felt like too much too soon for my liking, given Sterling’s trauma. Also, the mothers were quite overbearing…

All in all, it’s a decent story, but sitting at 170 pages it’s quite fast-paced. I do think I would’ve found it more enjoyable if the story had been drawn out more.

Can I say that I spent more than half of the book crying? yes? well because that's what happened, Sterling's story is heartbreaking and the author in the note tells you what you will encounter and God, I didn't think it would be so much.

Sterling despite everything that happens wants to be well and he tries but sometimes not everything goes as you expect and that's where Graham comes in, who is for me the friend that everyone should have, he helps him but above all he understands him and gives him his space. Their relationship from friends to lovers was nice, I didn't feel it forced and above all the understanding for Sterling's problem was the best.

A not so easy read but when it gets to its happy ending it is completely worth it.

Typically, I am a sped reader, and I can read multiple books in a day, but with this story, I took my time and spent an entire day devoted to the pages here. I was drawn in from the first page and knew there was something different, and special here even if it was going to make me emotional. The writer gives a fair warning at the beginning, and it's advisable to heed that warning because there is some heavy, dark, and hurtful content in Sterling's past, BUT it's also a beautifully done work that explores the unconditional relationship between Graham and Sterling as they finally come together as partners and not just friends. Obviously given that it's fiction and the writer created the scenarios and relationships, we're bound to get a well-balanced and perfect for each other couple, but Graham was just an extra special person and I love how everyone of the people (except Darren, grrrr) in Sterling's life love and help and protect him so that he can find his way to a more "normal" existence where he can function and feel happy and go beyond his troubling past to have a satisfying, if not always perfect, future with a person who loves and accepts him exactly as he is. Again, there's some content that will be difficult to read, but overall, this is a beautiful love story with supportive, lovely characters, and I loved it.

BEST FRIENDS TO LOVERS HURT/COMFORT!

Wow just wow is all I can say about this short story that packs a lot of punch!

Two best friends since freshman year one a hockey scholarship and the other a business major- both in love with each other but there are walls to climb and mountains to conquer- this is their sweet, poignant, heart rendering story…

An engaging read with wonderful, deep and complex characters that will crawl deep into your heart, soul and mind!

Sterling Harrison was sexually abused and prostituted by his father until he was adopted and undergoes constant therapy as he hates any touch, confined spaces or loud voices…. except Graham and his adopted parents…

“I’d spend the rest of my life being his safe haven and taking care of him every way I could so long as he let me.”

Graham Hurley has been his constant, his safety net when panic attacks break out but he is so in love with Sterling but does not want to ruin their deep friendship of two years…

What will be the catalyst to their dilemma?
Will their eyes open to what’s always been in front of them- each other…

I look forward to Levi’s story….

2.5*

This book had potential honestly but im disappointed at how surface lvl everything is. To the MCs relationship and the trauma, just everything was barely even scraping the surface.

I wldve loved if the author took more time to understand the struggle cuz i feel like simply stating "graham had to wait a year before sterling allowed him to touch him" doesnt show how deep that feeling rlly is. I personally have the exact same thing with physical touch, its absolutely disgusting to me unless i trust that person FULLY and am comfortable with them 100%, so seeing that being jus kinda a one liner was sad as was the fact everything else was basically the same, all one liners that barely give u an emotional connection to the characs at all.

When i first saw this book and the author said on a tiktok that she "wrote the amt of pages needed to tell the story" i agreed but now reading this, i think she shldve pushed this story at least 150 pages more. More abt how sterling had to slowly trust graham and how graham tried everything to get him to trust him while being respectful abt his boundaries, more abt how his family supported him before he went to college cuz that wld be when the PTSD is probably the worst, just..more. This story needs more.

I don’t know how to start this because I thoroughly enjoyed the connection between Graham and Sterling. But what sterling had been through, broke my heart. I was so glad that he had parents that excepted him for who he was, got him all the care that he needed and he had a best friend in Graham That was his Safeharbor. But when Sterling tries to push himself it backfired on him, leaving his now, ex-boyfriend demeaning and humiliating him. Thankfully Graham was there to standing and make sure it’s stopped. And then Sterling and Graham kissed and that changed everything.
So it’s kind of a hard book to review really, because my heart really sings for Graham and Sterling. But I was virtually in tears hearing about what Sterling had been through. I think I went through every emotion in this book. My Momma Bear protectiveness came out for sterling. I am so glad he has Graham and his family. This book was so well written it was just them right amount of balanced.

This is a short, but beautiful book about Sterling, traumatized as a child and fearing touch, and his roommate and best friend Graham, Sterling’s safe place. Graham just “gets” Sterling, able to read him and know just what he needs when he needs it, and he is also the only person other than Sterling’s parents to touch him on a regular basis. Sterling’s trauma is not covered in great detail, but what is revealed is so heartbreaking, it makes you wonder how anyone could ever feel whole again. But Graham is always there, and with his help and the help of others, Sterling has the chance to know what “normal” can feel like and overcome his past.
A very positive feel to the book overall for me, with characters easy to identify and empathize with, and a chance to see Sterling become everything he can be. I would give 10 stars if I could. I think this one will stay with me a long while. Loved it, and her writing.m.

DNF (page 84/124)

I really tried. I told myself “come on, just finish it,” but nope. The moment people in the book started shipping them, calling them Sterham (??), and making Instagram fan pages with their random pictures — I was done. Like… why are we doing this 😭😭

Honestly, I don’t understand why everyone in the story (or the fandom) cares about them so much. I’ve read from page 1, and I still don’t. It’s not even without reason — the whole thing feels like we’re thrown into the middle of a book. Suddenly, they already have this deep connection, and Graham is declaring love of his life-level devotion out of nowhere. Like… what? 😭 Did I accidentally skip a prequel or something?

It feels like I accidentally skipped the first 100 pages where their bond was supposed to build. Instead, I’m stuck reading endless lovey-dovey moments that just make me roll my eyes. And look, my reading time is limited — I only get peace when my baby’s asleep. I’m not wasting those precious minutes reading something that makes my eyes roll so hard they might get stuck.

If I could rate this 5+ stars, then I totally would!

Oh my gosh, I felt so bad for Sterling throughout this story, especially when situations would trigger his flashbacks =( but the way Graham was always there for him and was basically his safe space...

INSTANT SWOON

In this story, we meet Sterling and Graham, two college students who have been best friends since their freshman year and are also roommates. Sterling is dealing with trauma, PTSD, flashbacks, etc due to a horrible situation from his childhood. Graham is always there for him and knows exactly what Sterling needs and how to handle his episodes.

I definitely do not want to spoil this book, so I'll leave you with this: these two are each other's whole worlds and prove that at every point in this book.

**Please read the warnings at the beginning of the book due to the items mentioned that may be triggering for you!**.

Please read the trigger warnings that the author posts at the beginning of the book. If any of them are triggers for you, walk away. If you decide to stick around, then prepare for a harrowing tale that Sterling endured in his youth that shaped him into the broken man he is today. However, Graham, his best friend and roommate is always there as a pillar of strength for him. After one hateful social media post the two best friends share a searing kiss that kicks off one intense and loving relationship. It's through Graham's constant presence and his loving tendencies towards Sterling that allows him to be healed, or at least as healed as he can be. There were a lot of hard moments to read through in this book, but it was all worth it to see this relationship work out and come to a great happily ever after ending.

“I’ll always be your safe haven, Sterling. No matter what.”
And that was a promise I’d keep until my last, dying breath.

I loved this book. It hooked me from the very first page. Sterling's trauma broke my heart because he was struggling and haunted by what happened, and of course the abuse itself. I'm a sucker for the hurt/comfort trope, and even from the first pages I was dying for Graham to get in there and start being there for him. I loved the both of them. Graham was absolutely perfect for Sterling. He was patient, observant, and respectful of Sterling's boundaries and his comfort zone. And they were absolutely adorable together. I also liked that when this book started, they already had a years-long established friendship, so we weren't navigating things from the beginning- though becoming boyfriends was also a beginning of sorts. A beautiful book and one of my favorites from this author. 5 stars.

This book sure packs a punch for how short it is. You get plenty of love, smiles, and so much profound sadness for what Sterling went through. Seriously, heed the authors note and trigger warnings. The flashbacks, nightmares and mental struggles Sterling deals with are heartbreaking and at times very hard to read. I cried when he was discussing the flashback with his therapist. I absolutely loved Graham. He was everything a great best friend and amazing person should be, even when he went from best friend to boyfriend. He is patient, kind, sweet, gentle and selfless. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a young man with his own needs but Sterling is his number 1, always. Both these guys are in love with each other to start but Graham doesn’t make a move because he would never risk the friendship, and Sterling just struggles to see he’s worth everything. The angst of pining doesn’t last long for these two, they get together and deal with the ex and the rumors he’s spreading, then just life, their new relationship and Sterling’s struggles take up the rest of the book. As Sterling reaches new milestones, you celebrate with him. These two are just everything good in pure love. And their families are amazing. This book was well rounded and well written. I wish it had been a full length novel and that we got more, but that is just a wish, it doesn’t diminish how good this novella is. The author does a good job writing something that deals with heavy and hard topics. And that ending was just cute AF and so hot. Btw, totally read the bonus scene, it was the best. Put a huge smile on my face. These two are just too cute for words.

Sterling and Graham have been best friends and roommates since freshman year of college. Sterling had a very traumatic thing happen to him when he was younger and is still struggling with the effects from that. I loved how Graham was there for him and how he knew what to do and how to help in situations where Sterling needed support.
I feel like the book would have been even better if it were a little longer. I wanted to see more of the buildup to the friendship and relationship that was built between them. It felt a bit like it was told rather than shown and abrupt with the transition from friends to lovers. Kind of like we were jumping into a story that was already being told.
But the relationship between these two is brilliant. There are very sweet moments shared between them and it's clear that they are each other's entire world.

Graham and Sterling met freshman year of college, became roommate and best of friends. Sterling does not like to be touched due to trauma from abuse he endured as a child. When he starts dating one of Graham's teammates, but things implode when the physical relationship does not get off the ground.

Graham has been in love with Sterling for a couple of years. When Sterling falls apart Graham is there to pickup the pieces. When his ex is spreading personal information, Graham will do all he can to protect Sterling. When the pair share a kiss, it is a change in their relationship.

Can the pair develop into something more without damaging their friendship? This may be triggering for some due the assault of a child and the ongoing trauma of the adult.

Sensitive and worth the wait. Sterling is in his third year of college. He is struggling with many phobias, but he is still 'trying'. He is suffering from PTSD after sustaining years of abuse from a parent, while he was a child. He trusts very few people in his orbit. Graham, his roommate has been secretly crushing on Sterling since freshman year. He lives and breathes hockey. He understood Sterling's pain and maintained his distance giving more weight to their friendship than potential cost of pursuing a romantic relationship. Can they ever be more to each other? Can they become partners? Will Sterling get a handle on his trauma? The story is handled with care and sensitivity. Nicely done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leving a review.

This is a good book to Read! Sterling was abused by his father when he was young. His father is in jail and Sterling was adopted by another loving family. They gave Sterling everything he needed to live a productive life. In college Sterling met Graham and they became friends and roommates. Through college Graham would make sure Sterling was happy and safe. When there was a problem Sterling would go to see Dr Clancy. Dr Clancy has been his Therapist for a long time and she would help him when he needed additional help. The relationship between Sterling and Graham has continued to grow. Will Sterling be able to finally admit he is in love with Graham???/.

I absolutely loved Love and Defects: Perfectly Imperfect Series Perfectly Imperfect. Have a box of tissues handy. There is some trauma in this story that will have you in tears and wanting to hurt someone all at the same time. Sterling and Graham are an amazing couple. Graham will protect his best friend with his life but can he tell him he’s in love with him? I laughed, I cried and I loved everything about this book. I loved the storyline and the characters. The parents were my favorite. I would definitely recommend this book.

This book is a part of the Perfectly Imperfect series and focuses on Sterling and Graham. Sterling struggles daily with the aftermath of some awful things that have happened to him. Thankfully he has a best friend like Graham who loves and supports him through it all the best he can. I am so glad that Sterling had someone like Graham in his corner. This book drew you right in and had you feeling all the feels. I absolutely loved Sterling and Graham together and thought they were absolutely perfect for each other. This was a great book and a great addition to the series.
