Jesse and Thor’s time has finally run out. Lucius has arrived, and he wants more than just revenge on the wolf. He wants it all, and he’s willing to use some pretty nasty weapons to get it.
But Lucius isn’t Jesse’s only problem. She has another one to deal with—the threat of losing her partner for good, and not to the Romans. Daddy has come to town, and he has a messy surprise for Thor.
The Bastians, the fae, the witches of Cabbagetown. It’s going to be all hands on deck to win this war. Will it be enough, or will Atlanta fall?
Luanne Bennett is an author of fantasy and the supernatural. Born in Chicago, she lives in Georgia these days where she writes full time and doesn’t miss a thing about the cubicles and conference rooms of her old life. When she isn’t writing or dreaming up new stories, she’s usually cooking or tending a herd of felines and basset hounds. Look for book three of the Katie Bishop series coming this spring!
Urban fantasy the way it's supposed to be. These characters are dynamic with huge personalities and supernatural gifts.
Jesse Ames was once in the FBI, she's human but has some very outspoken tattoos - each represents a departed family member - who can lend their talents to Jesse when things get out of hand. Thor the shifter, usually a wolf, sometimes a mini poodle. He's kinda like an overly loud manwhore that you can't help but love. Then there's the bad boy (and girls) vampires, the witches, fae, a demigod, a vampire witch and so many more. This book was fun. Super fast paced, witty and action packed. I love the character bleed over from The Katie Bishop series. Warring vampires, stolen magic, deadly bones, a possessed conjure woman, Thor has to confront his past and that's only the stuff I can talk about without spoiling something!!! Absolutely awesome book. I seriously rank Luanne Bennett up at the top for urban fantasy authors. I received this ARC from the author all thoughts and opinions are my own.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
Actual rating for entire book is 2.25
4.25* if you do NOT read until the very end, IMHO stop when it moves onto the Emmaline update.
Lost 2 stars because plot wise this book at first seems to tie up all major plots of this series (& the Katie Bishop plots left hanging). Then in the last couple of pages a new plot is opened for two characters from this series / KB and we find out . Both those scenes end with the words 'let the games begin' which sounds like more books or a new series using these cliffhanger plots. There are no more books in this world as of end of March 2026, with this one out in 2023! The author moved onto an unrelated series, that's soon to have its sixth book published.
If we ever actually get a continuation of this series / new one starting from those cliffhangers, then I'll update the rating to 4.25 stars.
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes if you don't read until the very end otherwise no. -- Author is hit or miss for me so other series... maybe.
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
“Lets the Games Begin”… Jesse already knew that going back to New Orleans (“Gods & Savages”) would put them on Lucius radar, but they really thought that by getting in and out rapidly enough, they’d have a chance to solve the case with Lucius non-the-wiser. In their defense, they even solve that case rapidly enough. However, Lucius knows everything about it, and has decided to settle the score once and forever. And so the ‘games’ begins, enemies will become uneasy allies, families will reunite and the feud will be solved…. or not 😉… that is for you to find out 😊
„Open Season” is the third installment in the “The Chronicles of Jesse Ames” by Luanne Bennet a captivating, innovative and gritty urban fantasy series which takes place in the ‘Katie Bishop Verse’, well-known to Bennett’ fans: a world much like our own, with the sole difference of displaying fantastic elements and creatures, living side-by-side with ‘normal’ humans. A carefully build world, already familiar to those already acquainted with Bennett’s ‘Katie Bishop’ series. However, although knowledge of the ‘Katie Bishop’ series adds some layers to the world-building, there is by not means strictly necessary to enjoy this series to the fullest; and while Katie and Jesse share some common characteristic (both are intelligent, strong, smart, and unapologetic), they are very different in their approaches and MO.
“The Chronicles of Jesse Ames” is urban fantasy at its very best: a veritable page-tuner with a balanced mix of fast-action and in-deep description, a smart plot, fully enjoyable from start to finish, with a realistic and fully relatable heroine, and the most original shifter-sidekick you might ever came across, good-natured and no-nonsense, unless he is in it up to his neck and dad is coming to visit 😉.
Vampires are really not my thing, but Luanne Bennett makes each of the Jesse Ames’ books so interesting, it’s easy to forget you’re reading about the ultimate bloodsuckers! This case starts with finding a beloved sister who has been abducted by a Vampire, Lucius no less, who Jesse and Thor have been running from for what seems forever. All of their friends and a couple of surprise appearances are here to take on Lucius and his Romans in what they hope to be the Final Stand. There’s plenty of action and even a few very comic episodes, all of which makes reading Open Season a must. I couldn’t put it down. I have been fortunate to receive this ARC in exchange for an honest review of this book.
Luanne Bennett has done it again, created a book that you can’t put down until you have finished every word. This was a tense read, I wasn’t quite sure who would make it safely through this one. I loved that even more of the characters were directly involved in this storyline as well. It was a great read! Still waiting for Jesse and Blade to give in to their mutual attraction, and Thor really dodges a bullet in this one. lol! Thank you Ms. Bennett for the ride.
Amazing! Can’t wait to see what happens next with Jesse and Thor! This series has kept me on the edge of my seat, dying to know what happens next. I loved seeing Gabriel and Emmaline again in this one!
Jesse and Thor have a client, a problem, and a crisis. The Romans are in Savannah, have kidnapped a woman for their schemes, and someone has stolen three really dangerous relics from the resident witches.
I loved the characters both good and bad and the various situations that they were put in throughout the book were entertaining and very interesting. It was a great series and I hope it is continued
What a great adventure with fun characters! Loving this series ! We have Vamps , Werewolves, twins , wizards, bike riding female MC in the wild eclectic ATL !
I love these characters. It is so great how they are entwined through out each series. I really enjoy the depth of the stories, charecters, and world building.
So Lucius has arrived! How will Jesse and Thor get out of this one? Luanne Bennett takes us on another rollercoaster of suspense and fear! How will Jesse keep everyone safe and beat Lucius? I love how Jesse cares for her friends and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep them safe, even if it puts her in harms way!
How are Jesse and Thor are going to get out of this one. Vampires are here and they want to destroy everything and everyone that the friends care about. Nobody is off limits in this battle that's been a long time coming. Action galore, nail biting tension and crazy witches. Brilliant reading as usual
