Miya, an illegitimate child, has been living with the main Kounokura family since her mother unexpectedly passed away. With her stepmother and two stepsisters at her side, Miya experiences her fair share of visiting a department store, watching over the house alone, and even hosting a special guest! There are still many things about this new life Miya doesn't understand...but luckily, her not-at-all wicked stepfamily is there to show her the ropes in the second installment of this subversive comedy!
It's still really cute and that's about what saved it from one star. It actually took me a bit to get through simply because there was nothing to it. No real plot to drive a story. Just random moments again and then doing the whole "the said something scary, Surprise, they're being nice" over she over and it's not a surprise. I figured the first one was doing a setup for the story since it even brought up her grandma trying to get her back and whatnot. But no it is still just nothing happening. A moment when they had tea together, or when she made them pie, just stuff like that with nothing really happening. Makes it boring.
I loved seeing Miya much more comfortable around her sisters (and stepmother too because she would be upset if I left her out!) and even getting to meet a new family member! She still gets nervous and apologizes when she feels she's "messed up" or upset the other person, but she smiles freely so much more often that it leaves my heart feeling happy. <3
This volume had lots of continued fun shenanigans that really do make this a feel good story! I think the last chapter was my favorite and was such a sweet way to wrap up this volume, even though the bonus chapters were funny and enjoyable too.
Honestly, if I had any complaint about this series, it's that the volumes are so short! Still definitely recommending though and hoping the third volume will be just as sweet!
Last year I read the first volume and now I decided it was HIGH time to get on reading! In this one more Miya cute moments as her sisters and new mom are doing their best to make her happy and make her feel loved. I just love how they all look like they could be evil but then they have that sweeter side and it is so cute/fun. I love that Miya still has a way to go but that she also did something special for her new family. We also meet new characters and I had fun meeting them! Bonus points for the cute doggo again! And that bonus one with the maid going all gushy while she has to write a normal report and then getting her backstory + that ending, I was just SQUEEEEing in delight, that was so cute!
It's still cute slice of life with heartwarming characters. I especially liked the side story with the intimidating head maid. If I had one nitpick, it's that kintsugi is traditionally, like one might guess from the "kin" character, fixing pottery with gold, not lacquer. Or, not just lacquer, anyhow. That's why the repaired box on the back cover has golden cracks.
This is such a fun and sweet series. If you're fans of The Way of the House Husband, you'll also probably really love My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren't Wicked.
