Since Renako rebuked Oduka freaking Mai, Mai decided it was time to go find a lover. Renako decides to finally jump off the deep end as well, but possibly with floaties. However, when Renako tries to repair things between Satsuki and Mai, she might end up in hotter water than ever…

Oh, okay, I really get the joke now. This really, truly is the yuri harem to match your Love Hina’s and A Couple of Cuckoos’. Renako legitimately has no idea that she’s incredibly appealing to these girls, who are all infatuated with her or on their way to it.

But, honestly, no star shines brighter in the sky than Oduka freaking Mai, and Mai’s ludicrously confident insecurity is once more in full force this volume, starting with her inviting the entire student body to audition to be her new partner.

Mai clearly has exactly two settings - too much or nothing - but this is whole thing doesn’t sit well with Renako, who ends up having to finally settle with Mai where things are between the two of them. While the rest of the school mills around outside because of course they do.

Or, well, she would settle things, if she didn’t completely bottle it. I have no idea how the original line reads, but give whoever translated it as ‘friends with Renafits’ a big, big raise please. Renako is scared to death of just acknowledging how gay for Mai she truly is.

Thus, Renako is basically just having commitment issues - she and Mai even have a moment together that is incredibly spicy (and well-realized) and it still manages to be emblematic of Renako’s confidence problems. If she realized that she was worthy of Mai, this would be a different story.

It doesn’t hurt that Mai decides to apologize to the throng of people who came out by playing them an apology song, which made me laugh just by how incredibly timely it was with the cultural zeitgeist. At least it wasn’t a ukulele.

Satsuki’s section is a little lamer just because Satsuki cannot hope to hold a candle to the insane amounts of energy Mai brings to the title. The former also wants to make the latter jealous by fake dating Renako, so… tropes ahoy!

I do like how this sidesteps at least one problem - Mai is so endlessly confident in her abilities and new status with Renako that she couldn’t care less what she gets up to right now. Mai’s playing the long game, which is pretty unrealistic, but amusingly quashes the whole reason for the venture.

The Satsuki thing plays out about how you’d expect - she and Renako begin to actually connect and see the things they have in common. Their walls both come down a little, to the point where Renako’s horrible past is revealed.

And, as typically happens with such things, she’s the only one who actually cares. Then they end up in the bath together, just in case you had any questions left about what sort of yuri this is. It’s also a little piquant, but the conversations they have once Satsuki and Renako open up to one another are the best part of their relationship.

Honestly, the pool stuff with Mai was a lot more interesting, but I’m not exactly here for the salacious stuff anyway (it’s well done, mind, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t appreciate it). Naturally things get even more complicated when Renako, who once again swears she doesn’t like girls, dives right in and steals another first from Satsuki.

This series is just fun enough. Oduka Mai makes it the most fun for me - she’s practically ruthless in her desires and her wobbly super-confidence is a hoot. Renako is definitely the female version of the loser guy who keeps stumbling into situations, but a bit nicer.

This isn’t high art or some wonderfully written character piece espousing lesbian love. It’s girls’ love through and through, with some serious male gaze and definite moments of pandering. I’m not going to sit here on my high horse and say it isn’t fun, I had a good time reading it, but it’s not something I’m going out of my way to recommend either.

3 stars - if you want this sort of story, this does this sort of story very well. It’s always worth a given volume for Mai’s antics and there is a heart of a certain sort beneath its more obvious intent.

Mai really is the most melodramatic person ever - she's either all or nothing and making the most of it either way. I do feel badly for Satsuki, but my god, could there be just one girl who doesn't try to touch Renako more than she's comfortable with?

I definitely enjoy this less when it’s not focusing on the main couple. Feel like we’ve invented a love triangle entirely just to drag things out. 😅

It's fine, not really memorable unlike author's other work, apart from a couple of scenes that bordered on sexual assault

...

For that reason, mostly prefer Satsuki to Mai

I can’t believe I am going to hold on for the next book. There is so much cringe in this series but somehow, here I am. Waiting for the next one.
