This series is the one that introduced me to Joey W. Hill's work, and it was a great introduction. I instantly fell for each of the five ladies featured in Mistresses of the Board Room. These women work together and have a tight bond that only found family can have. Each of them would go to any lengths to help whichever one needed it. In this book, we have Cynbad Marigold's story. I went into this one blind, as I sometimes do. I didn't read the synopsis because I knew no matter what, I had to know her story, and I am so glad I did because I knew there was more to the Sadistic Cyn that people call heartless. There is a lot more...but only one person gets to see that part of her.

This one had darker tones than the prior ones in the series, and if you have read those, you know that Cyn has always been a bit on the dark side and very mysterious. Well, we find out a whole bunch about her past, so grab those tissues because you will need them! I don't want to give anything away, so I will only say that Cyn is one tough cookie, and it takes an even tougher man to submit to her.

Title: At Her Pleasure
Author: Joey W. Hill
Genre: BDSM Romance
Type: Standalone book 4 of Mistresses of the Board Room
POV: Third Person
Rating:

When Cynbad Marigold and Mick Cosgrove first crossed paths, both were at pivotal points in their lives. Ten years later, they met again, but the future they face seemed to be more complicated than either of them expected. There were also parts towards the end that were too far-fetched

I’ve been intrigued by Cyn since the first book in the series. The book started strong and I loved their dynamic. However, with all the hype around Cyn’s reputation as a ruthless sadist, the sadomasochism aspect was underwhelming.

Ten years could turn a man into a monster. But there was the wrong kind of monster and the right one.

The best part of the book for me was their history and backstory, solidifying them as my favorite couple in the series. I also liked how the other couples made appearances without intruding on the main story.

At Her Pleasure is a story of adaptability and perseverance. It would appeal to readers who enjoy BDSM romance with a hint of darkness.

Book in the series:
At Her Command (Mistresses of the Board Room #1) by Joey W. Hill At Her Service A Mistresses of the Board Room Novel by Joey W. Hill At Her Call (Mistresses of the Board Room #3) by Joey W. Hill At Her Pleasure by Joey W. Hill

Well... I regret buying this book and not being able to return it. But I will say that it got somewhat better after 55%.

For the first half, there was barely any tangible emotion. The author wanted us to feel something, but all I felt was the type of morbid curiosity one feels when watching a person get dissected while still alive and writhing in pain, kind of in a psychotic sort of way, like if I was Cannibal Lector and didn't really understand the real horror of dissecting someone and pulling out their entrails while they're screaming their head off... just numbed to people's emotion but still fascinated by their behavior sort of way.

Like - oh, she's going to make him fuck the sharp gravel with his turgid cock until it's all torn up and the pain and blood makes him cum...

Oh, she's going to do a CNC scene and torture him publicly and end with slashing a giant X on his back with a knife... how arousing... (NOT)

Oh, she's planning to burn him with these tubes that make you feel like you're actually burning alive, and he screams so hard he has to have a bit in his mouth so he doesn't bite off his tongue, but no wait, she wants to live dangerously, so she removes it and kisses him while he screams in pain... and somehow that only makes both of them more aroused... cuz they're hardcore sadomasochists...

For half the book you don't actually know why you're reading all this stuff. The backstory only comes in the second half. The backstory SORT of justifies how they deal with their issues, but - and this is a real question - are sadists and masochists born or made? This book seems to posit that they are mostly made. Or perhaps at first it toyed with the idea that they were born, but then decided they aren't sympathetic enough as characters if that's the case (because they weren't for the first half) and then decided to give them a REASON for being the way they are in the second half.

The reasons made the second half more... comprehensible by people NOT born sadists and masochists but then also made me feel like it was a cop out.

In any case, I am NOT a fan of this book. Neither character resonated. The sex scenes didn't titillate so much as made me feel the author was TRYING to titillate and shock.

I still have 2 more books I was planning to read by this author in this series... don't know, maybe I'll just finish one since I bought it and can't return it.

Ten years ago, Cynbad “Cyn” Marigold’s life irrevocably changed leading her to a new path and to becoming a tough Domme, but when Mick reemerges, the connection they once felt is tested.

"If you can stay hard through the minimum level of pain I like to inflict, then we can play. If you don’t, you’re not what I want.”

Narrated in third person, Cyn doesn’t trust easily and keeps most at a distance. With Mick, she finds a man who is equally tortured by his own demons. A submissive only to his Mistress, Mick also has a protective alpha side making him pretty irresistible. Together, they have palpable chemistry.

I really liked Cyn and Mick and how they interacted when they initially met and thereafter. The pace in which they reconnected felt appropriate, especially considering the emotions and deep pain each experienced. While one part at the end seemed unlikely, it served to support Mick’s arc and the ending.

At Her Pleasure is about resilience. This book would appeal to those seeking a substantive story between two complex characters in a BDSM setting.

I think it's safe to say that Joey W Hill's books always make me cry at one point or another. It's not really about dramatic situations, overly sappy dialogue or in your face struggles that are meant to be conquered. Her characters feel like real people. And I guess the real world packs quite a punch because I always find myself tearing up while reading one of her works.

Ok, so now to this book and couple. I was eager to see where Cyn's story would take her because she wasn't one of my favorites until now. At first I found her quite childish with her anger issues and "no holds barred attitude". On the other hand, I was quite sure I would at least come to understand her because Joey usually doesn't leave any stone unturned.

I really felt for Cyn, and my image of her changed as I got to know her. She was such an emphatic character who was afraid of her own vulnerabilities. Mick (the MMC) on the other hand, was quite frankly a mess. I was scared at some points in the story and thought, there was no way back from what was happening...and frankly Mick scared me a great deal. I had a really vivid image in my head on how he looked like a rabid wolf in some parts...and not really the sexy kind of wolf.

The story starts 10 years before the main events, and the fated meeting between our two MCs. Two lost souls who see something in each other that they can't truly name yet but that stays with them as the years go by. Cyn is a sadist Domme and Mick is a masochist who doesn't want to be put in a box. They circle each other like feral cats really, and their interactions get very visceral. While I read I could swear I tasted copper...but that may be because of how good of a writer Joey is.

Sado/masochism might not be my kink, but I can appreciate it when it's presented in a raw and intimate way. "At Her Pleasure" does that. The dynamic never felt forced or a rip off to me. It felt personal and true to our 2 MCs.

After reading so many of her books I can attest to this...Joey W Hill never disappoints. There are many things I adore about her works, the dialogue, world-building, I won't even mention the STEAM cause it's a no brainer. What always makes me eager to read her books though, are most of all her, CHARACTERS. I've never found 2 characters that are the same, or a dynamic that is the same between her couples. Everyone is different, and again so freaking REAL. You would think that after all those books she would start to recycle some ideas and characterizations but fear not, cause she never does that. What is more, her characters continue to evolve throughout her books, even when they change from main characters to side ones.

That being said, I can't wait for Vera...I was curious about her from the 1st book in the series, and I can't believe hers is the last one. On a side note, she gives me strong Mommy vibes and I have never read that kind of dynamic before but I would be up for it.

People, you really shouldn't sleep on this one here, it's as addictive as one could hope for!

Over a decade ago, when on a binge reading of vampire themed books, I happened across Joey W Hill and have been deeply grateful ever since for that introduction to a writer of depth and humanity. I know, with each book, I am going to experience something I struggle to get from any other author. Carefully, thoughfully, skillfully crafted words that carry an emotional depth and maturity, which capture the strength, vulnerability and wonder that is the human state at its best. Joey believes, in my opinion, in redemption and hope, though not always for all, as exemplified by some of the issues described here. Yes, humans can be incredible, but also cruel. It is how she weaves this into her work that makes its inclusion even more meaningful.
At Her Pleasure has drawn out so many emotions in me. I ran through a gamut of emotions reading this. Joy, hope, happiness and satisfaction at the bringing together of two people who, together, make a wonderful whole, but also grief, the welling of feeling that comes with the successful description of trauma, loss, gratitude, love, vulnerability, sharp humour, and care. Cyn and Mick, alongside the cast of people who are filled with strength and compassion, honesty and care, leap from the page and immediately burrow their way into heart and mind. I have to admit that this book challenged my boundaries of understanding, mainly because of my particular reactions to pain, felt and delivered, but here, I understood the purpose and reasons why both Cyn and Mick are who they are and need what they need. Again, Joey widens my perceptions while also telling me a story which is detailed, character and plot rich and, frankly, fantastic. Every time I read one book, I want to go back and read them all again and enjoy being reintroduced to characters I have grown to love. 💖💖💖💖💖💖

Cynbad JoEllen Marigold is one of the scariest Dommes at Progeny. She's a sadomasochist, who can break down her partners and give them the pain they crave while keeping herself buttoned up. She survived the streets and an ugly past to become a successful VP of Accounts, surrounded by good people, but keeping them from her darkest nature.

Mitch Cosgrove is a former cop, who handles security-related jobs in between planning Kink events. He carries a heavy burden that only the right Mistress can alleviate, with Primal Play or a Sadist's kiss.

Mitch met the troubled, angry, young Cyn ten years ago. He helped her escape the streets and neither of them forgot each other. When they run into each other after ten years, their connection reignites (and explodes), bringing together two battered souls who were made for each other.

Sometimes I'm afraid where my author is going to take me, even knowing she'll carry me to the other side, no matter how crazy it gets. Hill delivers another amazing story, that will take you from some extreme BDSM scenes to exploring the depths of the soul, that had me crying more than once, as well as laughing out loud. I may have cursed her a few times for the roller coaster ride but it's her amazing talent that has me dropping everything to read her next story.

This has been a fantastic series and this book is one of my favorites. Mick and Cyn first met when he was a young New Jersey cop and she was a very troubled of-age teen. It wasn't their time then, but they never forgot the change that each made on the other in that brief first meeting. When they next met unexpectedly ten years later, the timing wasn't much better, but they couldn't resist trying to see what enjoyment they might get in spending some time together..

Cyn is a consummate sadist mistress. For those submissive masochists who need what she has to offer, the match is good, but it is always just for the scene. Cyn won't allow her relationships to deepen and not even her closest friends know the depth of her darkness stemming from a traumatic childhood.

Mick is ostensibly working as a BDSM-related event planner traveling from venue to venue. When his work takes him to New Orleans, he reconnects with Cyn. As a deep masochist, he is drawn to Cyn to meet his need for pain. His darkness balances Cyn's own and their time together is like none other. Mick is due to leave in several weeks and his job seems suspicious, as if he's not being totally transparent. Can these two find a way to cope with their darkness and perhaps even find a future together? This book is layered, insightful in multiple aspects of the S/M relationship, healing, and hopeful. It's also another great romance with a fabulous HEA.

This is not a easy book to read at times. Both of these individuals have had really terrible lives. They both have found ways to overcome the negative beginning and make decent lives. Cyn has become a successful woman that has found friends that care for her. She is a formidable Domme. She still has issues that she doesn't start to confront until Mick comes back into her life. Mick is the one person that can get through the armor that Cyn has fortified over the years.

This story is not going to be an easy read. Cyn is a sadist and SADIST needs to be capitalized. Mick is a submissive and he craves a strong woman to help defeat the demons that have taken over his soul. Mick has been working undercover to stop human trafficking. It is so sad to read what happens to the people that Mick is trying to save. Unfortunately until all the governments come together to put a stop to this terrible crime there is little that could be done.

It was nice to have Cyn find her happily ever after. It was also wonderful to see more of Tyler Winterman. I love all of these books and hope that Ms. Hill continues to write more of her wonderful stories.

Cyn doesn't believe in happily ever after. I mean she barely believes in the family she has built. So when her past reappears in the form of a man full of darkness will she risk fighting his demons as well as her own?
At Her Pleasure is forth in Joey W. Hill's Mistresses of the Boardroom series. Cyn is the sadist of the group. I was a bit concerned with how I would handle where Ms. Hill would take us with her but I was pleasantly surprised. Don't get me wrong both Cyn and Mick's needs were way outside my comfort level but Ms. Hill surrounded their edginess with deep emotional wells. She showed just how your past can shape you. I loved that Mick and Cyn met when neither was ready but fate brought them together when they were better able to handle their needs as well as each other's. I love that Cyn's need fit so well with Mick's. I loved that we got to see Cyn's accept that she is more than even she knew. I loved seeing both Mick and Cyn accept their dark areas complement each other even as the move past their comfort level. This is a well written emotion story that I enjoyed and look forward to where Ms. Hill will take us next.

I am used to, and expect nothing but perfection from Ms. Hill's books and she delivers as always, but this story packs an extra visceral punch.
The deep pain and suffering, the rigidly held surface appearance, the undercurrents of the two main characters brought me to tears; as did the painful steps to a more balanced state. But those tears had a different quality, they were hopeful ones. Hope for a love that can be lived with all its facets, all the danger, the thrill and the softness it deserves; in the embrace of a chosen family and friends with the understanding and desire to nurture a union of a very special kind, one that is only possible in a community that accepts all variants of relationships.
In this book Ms. Hill not only narrated a gruesome canvas of psychological and physiological wounds, but also the steps, the devotion it takes to begin the healing.

At Her Pleasure is the 4th book in the Mistress of The Board Room series. Even though all the characters from the previous books play important roles, Mick and Cyn's story can be read as a stand-alone. While I wouldn't call it an eay read - there are very troubling background stories and a lot of trauma to be dealt with - it is a very engaging and rewarding one. It had my heart breaking, racing and ultimately rejoicing as the two overcome impossible odds, proving that even for the strongest-willed persons, it takes a network of supportive friends and family as well as true devotion to make it to a HEA, but it IS possible! A wonderful message, delivered in an original and unique way. A keeper for sure and I'm now looking forward to Vera's book!

This book was an emotionally charged rollercoaster from start to finish. Ironic, as I saw it, because Mick and Cyn are the king and queen of bottling things up. At Her Pleasure isn't a book; it's an experience. It hooks you in right from the start, and makes you challenge and question everything you thought you knew about the human psyche. Content warnings, pay attention to those. While reading this, if you need to pause, pause. If you need to take a breather before returning to it, do so. To quote Cyn, find your safe space. I know I did, which is a testament to Joey W. Hill's writing and her ability to craft compelling tales about emotionally damaged men and the women who tame them. I recommend this to anyone looking for a gutwrenching, emotionally charged read.

I loved this book!

It was gripping, heartbreaking, heartwarming, suspenseful. I loved the characters together, they are absolutely soulmates.

I did not know where the story was going and I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns. It is a book better to be enjoyed going blind. Even if the book was lengthy, it did not dragged and I did not want it to end. I would have loved an epilogue. It was addictive and I read it too quickly. It is definitely a book to reread and savor.

I also always like the various cameos of characters from her different series. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

Finished Cyn and Mick's story. One hell of a ride. It is maybe a little sickening, how I enjoy these kind of stories. They suck you in, mangle you, keep you out of breath and spit you out while you're wondering what the hell just happened. And you feel like you just had an endorphine- and adrenalineboost.
It is hard to write about these themes, and to get to the heart of the people who live like that. You managed that. And I love it isn't all roses and sunshine, but still hard work to keep life worth living. And love worth living too. But the hope this story speaks, even while enduring horror? It felt real.

Wow! This book gave me a massive book hangover. I FLOVED it. To say it drew me in is an understatement. just like the other books in this series there are points that ripped my heart out and I wanted to just hug the characters. Well Cyn would probably stab me HA! She had a very tough childhood and it plays a major part in who she is today. She and Mick are drawn together, memories of what happened 10 years ago but no hope for a future. This book is dark, but wonderful at the same time and a roller coaster of a ride to the HEA we expect.

Oh my! I loved this book and heartily recommend you read it but be warned -- it is INTENSE. Joey is fantastic at putting it all out there, not leaving anything on the table but I have to admit that this book took some work to get through. I love a vulnerable man who serves his mistress and Mick fits that bill; Cyn is a wonderful domme who has gone through so much and come out the other side better. Their interactions are memorable but at times heart-wrenching. I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and suggest you do too, if you dare!

Mick's Demon Slayer

Another great book in this series. There was moments that I cried and others happiness. The intensity is nail bitting. What Mick does is something that takes strength beyond measure. Cyn has her own issues but she has her special way of dealing with them. The demons that pegs them both are what will bring them closer Together or could tear them apart. You'll have read to find out!! If you are looking for a nail bitter and on the edge of your seat book. This is it!! Run. So worth it too.

Heavy on the SM, this story is dark and gritty. It's the first story I've read from Joey Hill and it won't be my last. The terribly sad pasts that the MCs have come from and how their brand of kink just fits each other made this story-which at times was hard to read-into a love story. I thought it was great and I'd like to go back and read the others. It had a great ending and I loved how the characters remained true throughout.

Amazing!
Cyn has never been my favorite character. Too cold, too bitchy and too sharp. A blade ready to cut anyone that deigns to displease her. The author takes this thoroughly unpleasant character and has you liking and respecting her by the end of this book. Two things I never expected but should have.
Once again the author takes you places no sane person wants to go and has you enthralled with the visit. A fantastic addition to the series. Bring on Vera.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. An amazing story by Ms. Hill. She always has a way of taking the reader on a journey of discovery, both emotionally and mentally. Her bold and fearless prose draws you in. I loved this book. The camper scene had me on the edge of my seat. This hero and heroine are intense… intense, but trust this author to heal and give you a happily-ever-after. This book was true to the series.

Cyn's story was so perfect. Her wild nature explained and her backstory so compelling and fitting. She's definitely one of my favorite Mistresses. I didn't imagine connecting so completely but I felt so enraptured and able to understand- she's such a 'real' character with flaws and issues, and her personality is genuine to exactly who she is. Hill writes some incredible women. 4.5 stars!

Absolutely Amazing

This book was alot darker than I ever expected and has R.A C.K kink throughout but, I have never been so gripped by a story. Through all of the good and bad I was at the edge of my seat simotaniously wanting to know what happens and never wanting the story to end.

Good story

While we’re waiting for Vera’s story, will there be a story about Bastion? The stories, characters and how everything is tied together is fascinating. I can’t get enough of the series. Can’t wait for more stories.

So Cyn has been clearly described as a sadist, and I wasn't sure if I was the right reader for this, but I was pleasantly surprised. Cyn & Mick's chemistry is smoldering from beginning to end, which I haven't really felt with this series.

Not a critique of this book specifically, but more of overarching trends in Hill's works and how my own taste has changed: 1) law enforcement are often the heroes of her books and 2) a tendency to use over the top crime as the 3rd act conflict, when I feel there are other ways to have that conflict. Mixed feelings about these.

In At Her Pleasure, Joey Hill takes a walk on the dark side and It's riveting. It's gritty, seemingly brutal and cruel, yet taken in context it all fits perfectly into this story. I've said it before but it bears repeating, when it comes to BDSM romance Ms Hill has few equals. The complexities of her characters, their experiences and their stories grab and hold your attention from the first page to the last. The depth of emotions at play here are startling, angsty and at times despairing but underneath them all the power of love evens out them all out. Having a familiar face from Ms Hill's Nature of Desire series make an appearance made me want to binge reread the series.

Ten years ago they met. Although Cyn appeared to be off the rails, Mick recognized a kindred wounded spirit. He also recognized the sreel cored Domme beneath her pain. When he gave her the means to escape the toxicity of her surroundings she goes on to reinvent herself and live her life full throttle, making no apologies and becomes seemingly fearless. In the intervening years Mick becomes a man on a mission. One that drags him through the dregs of a brutal society. He slowly but surely losing his soul. The one thing he's held onto is the memory of the wild eyed, dark haired beauty. Unexpectedly reunited for an event at Club Progeny they play at the extreme outer edges of hardcore sado/masochism. It feeds both of their needs. But, how far is too far?

Started out rough for me and by half way through, I'm heartbroken and loving this romance.

When it comes to exploring different types of kinky relationships, Ms. Hill consistently delivers. Cyn is a different type of domme when compared to the rest of the women at TRA where she works. Cyn has been a bit of a mystery in the previous books. She is feral. Eager to read her story, I dived right into this book. At around 15% of the book I started to worry. I hated Cyn. I loathed her attitude and I don't like her style of SM. 25% into the book, I'm distressed as I love Ms. Hill's writing and I'm close to a 1 or 2 star at this point. I don't know if I can continue on because I really dislike Cyn and want to chuck her off the nearest cliff. For those wondering, if Cyn was a man and created this way, I would feel the same. I kept on plowing with the story. I'm not sure what was the turning point, but my feelings of disgust and distrust eased.
