The vibe was completely off in the first third of Webster's New World Italian Dictionary: Italian/English, English/Italian, like trying to join a conversation halfway through. Names, places, and old grudges fly by with zero explanation. Then Staff slows down and lets one character tell a story at a kitchen table, and suddenly everything clicks into place. The scene where she describes leaving her hometown in the back of a pickup truck is the best writing in the book. For readers willing to be confused for a while. Pass if you like everything explained up front.
