WOOW!! ಇದು काळा घोडा!(ಕಪ್ಪು ಕುದುರೆ). 4.5 Stars
ಮರಾಠಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಲಯಾಳಂನ publishing industry ಅಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಕವಾಗಿ ಬಳಸುವ ʼಕಾಲಾ ಗೋಡಾʼ ಎನ್ನುವ keyword ನಿಮಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾ?ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲವಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡದ ʼನಿರಂಜನʼ ಎನ್ನುವ ಲೇಖಕರು ನಿಮಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾ? 95% ಕನ್ನಡದ ಓದುಗರು ಮತ್ತು ಬಹುತೇಕ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತ ವಿಮರ್ಶಕರಿಗೂ ಇವರು ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಯಾಕೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾ? ʼಕಾಲಾ ಗೋಡಾʼ!!!
'ಕಾಲಾ ಗೋಡಾ' ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಘಟಿಸಿರಬಹುದಾದ(?) ಕಾಲ್ಪನಿಕ ಘಟನೆಗಳು, ಘಟಿಸಿದ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಘಟನೆಗಳ ಜೊತೆ ಮಿಶ್ರಣಗೊಂಡು ಹುಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಫಿಕ್ಷನ್ ಈ ʼವಿಂಟರ್ಸ್ ಆಫ್ ಲಯನ್ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ʼ. example ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಪೋರ್ಚಗೀಸರು ಬಂದದ್ದು ಮತ್ತು ಪೋರ್ಚಗೀಸರು ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಕಾಡುಗಳಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ತರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ slaveಗಳು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕವಾದರೆ, slave ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ʼಟೋಬೋ ʼ ಎಂಬುವವನು ಪೋರ್ಚಗೀಸರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ
ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಘಟನೆ ಕಾಲ್ಪನಿಕ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಯುರೋಪಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ವಿಶ್ವಯುದ್ಧ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕವಾದರೆ, ಜರ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ತಗುಲಿ ಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡ ಕಾಸರಗೋಡಿನ ರೈ ಗಳ ಮನೆಯ ಕಂಬಳದ ಓಟಗಾರ 'ಹಳಬ' ಫಿಕ್ಷನ್. ವಿಶೇಷವಾದ ವಿಷಯ ಏನೆಂದರೆ ಅಂಥಹ ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಟೋಬೋ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂಥಹ ಕಾಸರಗೋಡಿನ ಹಳಬನ ನಡುವೆ ಇರುವ solitary and peculiar connectivity. ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ತುಂಬಾ ಇಂಥಹ unpredictable ಘಟನೆಗಳಿವೆ.ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹೇಳಿದಷ್ಟು spoiler ಆಗುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆ ಇದೆ.
ಈಗ ಕಾಲಾ ಗೋಡಾ ಮತ್ತು ನಿರಂಜನರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ. ನಿರಂಜನರು, ಕುಕ್ಕೆ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯದ ಬಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಬಾಳಿದ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಲೇಖಕರು. ಇವರು ಬರೆದ ಸುಮಾರು 25 ರಷ್ಟು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ನಮ್ಮ ಮುಂಬೈನ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಂಗಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದವು!
ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುಪಾಲು ಕನ್ನಡದಿಂದ ಮಲಯಾಳಂಗೆ ಅನುವಾದಿತವಾದವು! ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಇವರ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಮಲಯಾಳಂ ಅನುವಾದಗಳನ್ನು ಕುಂಜಿರಾಮನ ಎನ್ನುವ ಕಾಸರಗೋಡಿನ ಲೇಖಕರು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು! ನಿರಂಜನ ಅವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು basically ಕನ್ನಡದ್ದವಾದರೂ, ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುತೇಕರಿಗೆ ಅವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಇವೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದೂ ಗೊತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಮಲಯಾಳಂನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಿಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಬೇಡಿಕೆ ಇತ್ತು.
ಅವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆಯಾದ ತಕ್ಷಣ 'Literary agents'ಗಳು ಮಲಯಾಳಂ ಮತ್ತು ಮರಾಠಿಯ ದೊಡ್ಡ Publishers ಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ʼಕಾಲಾ ಗೋಡಾʼ ಬಂದಿದೆ. Bidding ಮಾಡಬಹುದೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ನಿರಂಜನ ಅವರ ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮಲಯಾಳಂಗೆ ಅನುವಾದಿಸಲು Publishersಗಳು bidding ಮಾಡಲು ಮುಗಿ ಬೀಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಮಲಯಾಳಂ ಮತ್ತು ಮುಂಬೈ ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರಂಜನ ಅವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಿಗೆ ಬಹು ಬೇಡಿಕೆ ಇರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ಮಲಯಾಳಂ ಮತ್ತು ಮರಾಠಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದುಗರ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯು ಹೆಚ್ಚು.
So ಪ್ರತಿ ಓದುಗನು ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತ ಬಿಳಿ ಕುದುರೆಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ತಲೀನವಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ, ಓದುಗನ ಕಣ್ತಪ್ಪಿಸಿ ಅಥವಾ ಓದುಗನಿಂದ ತಾವೇ ತಪ್ಪಿಸಿ ಕೊಂಡು ಬೇರೆ ಭಾಷೆಗಳ ವಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ʼLiterary agentsʼಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಅನುವಾದಕ್ಕೆಂದು ಬಂದು ಭರ್ಜರಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರವಾಗುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳೇ ʼಕಾಲಾ ಗೋಡಾʼ. ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಕಡೆಯ ಲೇಖಕರ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಗಳು ಮಲಯಾಳಂನ ಸಂಸೃತಿಗೆ ಒಪ್ಪುವುದರಿಂದ ಮಲಯಾಳಂಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಉತ್ತರ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಲೇಖಕರ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಗಳು ಮರಾಠಿಗೆ ಒಪ್ಪುವುದರಿಂದ ಮರಾಠಿಗೆ ಅನುವಾದವಾಗುವುದು publishing industryಯ untold ಟ್ರೆಂಡ್.

Solid 5 Stars. Left me dumbstruck.
ಬಹುತೇಕ ಓದುಗರು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ನನಗೆ ಓದುವಂತೆ ಹೇಳಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಓದಲು ಆಯ್ದುಕೊಂಡದ್ದು.
ಜರ್ಮನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶುರುವಾಗುವ ಕಥೆ,ತನ್ನ ಹುಟ್ಟಿನ ಮೂಲದ ಜಾಡನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಭಾರತದ ಕರಾವಳಿ(ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು ಮತ್ತು ಕೇರಳ) ತೀರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು ಪುನಃ ಬೆಲ್ಜಿಯಂ , ಫ್ರಾನ್ಸ್ ಮತ್ತು ಜರ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಬರುವಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ರೋಮಾಂಚನವಾದ ರೋಲರ್ ಕೋಸ್ಟರ್ ಸವಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಇದು ನಿಜವಾಗಲೂ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯೇ ಎಂಬ ಸಂದೇಹ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಮರುಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ಆಯಿತು.
ಯಾಕೆಂದರೆ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಮಟ್ಟದ ವಿಷಯದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗಿರುವುದು.
ಗಂಭೀರವಾದ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ವಿಡಂಬನೆ, ವಿನೋದ ಮತ್ತು ಕುತೂಹಲಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿರುವುದೇ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಗೆಲುವಿರಬಹುದು.
ಹಿಜುಬಾ ಮತ್ತು ಆಥಿಯಾಳ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಕಾವ್ಯಾತ್ಮಕವಾದರೆ ಹಳಬ ಮತ್ತು ಟೋಬೋನ ಫಜೀತಿ ವಿನೋದಲೀಲೆ.ವಿಶ್ವಯುದ್ಧ ಮತ್ತು ಯಹೂದಿಗಳ ಮೇಲಿನ ದಬ್ಬಾಳಿಕೆಯ ಕೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಲ್ಲ ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಗುಲಿ ಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡ ಇವರ ಜೀವನಗಾಥೆಯೇ ವಿಂಟರ್ಸ್ ಆಫ್ ಲಯನ್ಗಾರ್ಟನ್.
ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಎರಡನೇ ಭಾಗದ ಸುಳಿವನ್ನು ಲೇಖಕರು ಕೊನೆಯ ಪುಟದಲ್ಲಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿರುವ ರೀತಿ ನಿಜವಾಗಲು ಸೃಜನಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿದೆ. ನಾನು ಓದಿರುವ ಅತ್ತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ಕೃತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಖಂಡಿತ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಜಾಗ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡಿತು.
"ಆಥಿಯಾಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ಹಿಜುಬಾನಿಗೆ ಕರುಳು ಕಿತ್ತು ಬಂದಷ್ಟು ಸಂಕಟವಾಯಿತು. ಒಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೈಕೈ ತುಂಬಿಕೊಂಡು ದಷ್ಟಪುಷ್ಟವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಸುಂದರಿ ಆಥಿಯಾ, ಸರಿಯಾದ ಊಟ, ನಿದ್ರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪೋಷಣೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಈಗ ಬೇಸಿಗೆಗೆ ಒಣಗಿ ಬಾಡಿದ ಬಳ್ಳಿಯಂತಾಗಿದ್ದಳು. ಕೂದಲು ಗಂಟಿಕ್ಕಿ ಕಳೆಗುಂದಿದ್ದವು. ಚರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲಿನ ಕಾಂತಿಯಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೇನು? ನಿಜ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾರೀರಿಕ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಲವಲೇಶವಾದರೂ ಸ್ಥಾನವಿದೆಯೇ?" ~ ವಿಂಟರ್ಸ್ ಆಫ್ ಲಯನ್ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಿಂದ.
ಬಹುತೇಕ ಓದುಗರು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ನನಗೆ ಓದುವಂತೆ ಹೇಳಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಓದಲು ಆಯ್ದುಕೊಂಡದ್ದು.
ಜರ್ಮನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶುರುವಾಗುವ ಕಥೆ,ತನ್ನ ಹುಟ್ಟಿನ ಮೂಲದ ಜಾಡನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಭಾರತದ ಕರಾವಳಿ(ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು ಮತ್ತು ಕೇರಳ) ತೀರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು ಪುನಃ ಬೆಲ್ಜಿಯಂ , ಫ್ರಾನ್ಸ್ ಮತ್ತು ಜರ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಬರುವಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ರೋಮಾಂಚನವಾದ ರೋಲರ್ ಕೋಸ್ಟರ್ ಸವಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಇದು ನಿಜವಾಗಲೂ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯೇ ಎಂಬ ಸಂದೇಹ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಮರುಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ಆಯಿತು.
ಯಾಕೆಂದರೆ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಮಟ್ಟದ ವಿಷಯದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗಿರುವುದು.
ಗಂಭೀರವಾದ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ವಿಡಂಬನೆ, ವಿನೋದ ಮತ್ತು ಕುತೂಹಲಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿರುವುದೇ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಗೆಲುವಿರಬಹುದು.

ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಎರಡನೇ ಭಾಗದ ಸುಳಿವನ್ನು ಲೇಖಕರು ಕೊನೆಯ ಪುಟದಲ್ಲಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿರುವ ರೀತಿ ನಿಜವಾಗಲು ಸೃಜನಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿದೆ. ನಾನು ಓದಿರುವ ಅತ್ತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ಕೃತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಖಂಡಿತ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಜಾಗ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡಿತು.

ತುಂಬಾ ಓದುಗರು ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಕೂಲಂಕುಷವಾಗಿ ಓದಿ ಧೀರ್ಘವಾದ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವನ್ನುಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತ���ದ್ದೇನೆ. ಇದು ಕೇವಲ ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಅಷ್ಟೆ, ಯಾರಿಗೂ ನೋವನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶವಿಲ್ಲ.
ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನೆಗೆಟೀವ್ ಅಂಶ ಎಂದರೆ, ಇಂಥಹ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ತಲುಪುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಪ್ರಕಾಶಕರು ವಿಫಲವಾಗಿರುವಂತೆ ತೋರುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಹ ಓದುಗರು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸುವವರೆಗೂ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಇರುವಿಕೆಯೇ ನನಗೆ ತಿಳದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಎರಡನೆಯ ನೆಗೆಟೀವ್ ಅಂಶ ಎಂದರೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬಹುತೇಕ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಅಂಗಡಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ದೊರಕದೆ ನಾನು ಅಮೆಜಾನ್ ಮೂಲಕವೇ ಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾಯಿತು.
ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ, ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಘಟನೆಗಳು ಅಪ್ಪಟ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಜೊತೆ ಬೆರೆತಾಗ ಇಂಥಹ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಹುಟ್ಟಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ. ನಿಸ್ಸಂಶಯವಾಗಿ ಇದು ನಾನು ಓದಿರುವ ಅತಿ ಉತ್ತಮ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು. ಲೇಖಕನ ಮೊದಲ ಕೃತಿ ಎಂದು ಒಪ್ಪಲು ಕಷ್ಟ. ಓದುಗನನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಮೈಮರೆಯುವಂತೆ ಕಾವ್ಯಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿ ರಂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾ, ಓದುಗ ಮೈ ಮರೆತ ಕೂಡಲೇ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಓಡಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಪುನಃ ಓದುಗ ಎಚ್ಚರವಾಗುವ ವೇಳೆಗೆ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ನಿಧಾನಿಸಿ ಗಂಭೀರ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ನಿವೇದಿಸುತ್ತಾ, ಪುನಃ ರಂಜಿಸಿ ಪುನಃ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಕಥೆ ಓಡಿಸುವ ಕಲೆ
ಆಕಸ್ಮಿಕವಾಗಿ ಘಟಿಸಿರುವುದೋ ಇಲ್ಲ ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಲೇಖಕ ಆ ಕಲೆಯನ್ನು ಸಿದ್ದಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವುದೋ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಲು ಅವರ ಮುಂದಿನ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ನಾನು ಓದಬೇಕು. ಸಮಾಧಾನದ ವಿಷಯವೆಂದರೆ ಕೇವಲ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಮೆರೆಯುತ್ತವೆ ಹೊರತು, ಬಹುತೇಕ ಹೊಸ ಲೇಖಕರ ಹಾಗೆ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಮೆರೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಹಪಾಹಪಿಗೆ ಲೇಖಕರು ಹೋಗದೆ ಇರುವುದು.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತುವಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ, ಕಥಾವಸ್ತುವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ. ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣವಾದ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತು. ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು, ಕೇರಳ, ಅಂಕೋಲಾ, ಗೋವಾ, ಜರ್ಮನಿ, ಬೆಲ್ಜಿಯಂ , ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಕಾಡುಗಳು, ಪೋರ್ಚಗಲ್ ಹೀಗೆ ಹತ್ತಾರು ದೇಶ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಘಟನೆಗಳೆಲ್ಲಾ ಒಂದೆಡೆ ಬಂದು ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಯಾರ ಮಗ ಯಾರು, ಯಾರ ಅಪ್ಪ ಯಾರು, ಇವಳು ಯಾರ ಅಮ್ಮ, ಅವನು ಇವನಿಗೆ ಏನಾಗಬೇಕು ಎಂಬೆಲ್ಲಾ ಒಗ್ಗಟುಗಳ ಉತ್ತರವನ್ನು ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಶಕ್ತಿಯೇ ಕಂಡು ಹಿಡಿಯಬೇಕು. ಲೇಖಕರ ರಂಜಿಸುವ ಆಟದಲ್ಲಿ
ಓದುವಾಗ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಮೈ ಮರೆತರೂ ಪುನಃ ಓದಬೇಕು.
ವಿಶ್ವಯುದ್ಧ, ಕಂಬಳ, ಬಾತುಕೋಳಿಗಳು, ವೇಶ್ಯಗೃಹ, ಸೇನಾಧಿಕಾರಿ, ಬಿಯರ್, ಬೀಡಿ, ವರ್ಜಿನಿಟಿ, ಹಿಜುಬಾನ ಕುದುರೆಗಳು, ಆಥಿಯಾಳ ದೋಣಿ, ಹಳಬನ ಕಳ್ಳು, ಗ್ಲೋರಿ ಹಡಗು ಹೀಗೆ ನೂರಾರು ವಿಷಯಗಳಿವೆ. ಹಿಜುಬಾ ಎನ್ನುವ ಒಬ್ಬ ಮಹಾನ್ ಪ್ರಚಂಡ ಕಳ್ಳ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಜಂಟಲ್ ಮ್ಯಾನ್ ಹೇಗಿರಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸುವುದು, ಛೀ ಪಾಪ ಅಮಾಯಕ ಎನ್ನಿಸುವ ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಗುಲಾಮ ತನ್ನ ದ್ವೇಷ ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಮಹಾನ್ ಸಾಹಸ ಮಾಡುವುದೆಲ್ಲಾ ಕಣ್ಣಂಚಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರು ಮತ್ತು ನಗು ಎರಡನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ತರಿಸಿದಾಗಲೇ ಇದು ʼಒಳ್ಳೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕʼ ಎನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಆದರೂ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಕರು ಮತ್ತು ಲೇಖಕರು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾದ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಚಾರ ಮಾಡಿ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಅಂಗಡಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದೊರೆಯುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಲು ವಿಫಲವಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಖಂಡಿತ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ತುಂಬಾ ಓದುಗರು ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಕೂಲಂಕುಷವಾಗಿ ಓದಿ ಧೀರ್ಘವಾದ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವನ್ನುಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತ���ದ್ದೇನೆ. ಇದು ಕೇವಲ ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಅಷ್ಟೆ, ಯಾರಿಗೂ ನೋವನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶವಿಲ್ಲ.
ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನೆಗೆಟೀವ್ ಅಂಶ ಎಂದರೆ, ಇಂಥಹ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುಗರಿಗೆ ತಲುಪುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಪ್ರಕಾಶಕರು ವಿಫಲವಾಗಿರುವಂತೆ ತೋರುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಹ ಓದುಗರು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸುವವರೆಗೂ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಇರುವಿಕೆಯೇ ನನಗೆ ತಿಳದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಎರಡನೆಯ ನೆಗೆಟೀವ್ ಅಂಶ ಎಂದರೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬಹುತೇಕ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಅಂಗಡಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ದೊರಕದೆ ನಾನು ಅಮೆಜಾನ್ ಮೂಲಕವೇ ಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾಯಿತು.
ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ, ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಘಟನೆಗಳು ಅಪ್ಪಟ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಜೊತೆ ಬೆರೆತಾಗ ಇಂಥಹ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಹುಟ್ಟಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ. ನಿಸ್ಸಂಶಯವಾಗಿ ಇದು ನಾನು ಓದಿರುವ ಅತಿ ಉತ್ತಮ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು. ಲೇಖಕನ ಮೊದಲ ಕೃತಿ ಎಂದು ಒಪ್ಪಲು ಕಷ್ಟ. ಓದುಗನನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಮೈಮರೆಯುವಂತೆ ಕಾವ್ಯಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿ ರಂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾ, ಓದುಗ ಮೈ ಮರೆತ ಕೂಡಲೇ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಓಡಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಪುನಃ ಓದುಗ ಎಚ್ಚರವಾಗುವ ವೇಳೆಗೆ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ನಿಧಾನಿಸಿ ಗಂಭೀರ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ನಿವೇದಿಸುತ್ತಾ, ಪುನಃ ರಂಜಿಸಿ ಪುನಃ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಕಥೆ ಓಡಿಸುವ ಕಲೆ
ಆಕಸ್ಮಿಕವಾಗಿ ಘಟಿಸಿರುವುದೋ ಇಲ್ಲ ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಲೇಖಕ ಆ ಕಲೆಯನ್ನು ಸಿದ್ದಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವುದೋ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಲು ಅವರ ಮುಂದಿನ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ನಾನು ಓದಬೇಕು. ಸಮಾಧಾನದ ವಿಷಯವೆಂದರೆ ಕೇವಲ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಮೆರೆಯುತ್ತವೆ ಹೊರತು, ಬಹುತೇಕ ಹೊಸ ಲೇಖಕರ ಹಾಗೆ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಮೆರೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಹಪಾಹಪಿಗೆ ಲೇಖಕರು ಹೋಗದೆ ಇರುವುದು.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತುವಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ, ಕಥಾವಸ್ತುವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ. ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣವಾದ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತು. ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು, ಕೇರಳ, ಅಂಕೋಲಾ, ಗೋವಾ, ಜರ್ಮನಿ, ಬೆಲ್ಜಿಯಂ , ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಕಾಡುಗಳು, ಪೋರ್ಚಗಲ್ ಹೀಗೆ ಹತ್ತಾರು ದೇಶ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಘಟನೆಗಳೆಲ್ಲಾ ಒಂದೆಡೆ ಬಂದು ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಯಾರ ಮಗ ಯಾರು, ಯಾರ ಅಪ್ಪ ಯಾರು, ಇವಳು ಯಾರ ಅಮ್ಮ, ಅವನು ಇವನಿಗೆ ಏನಾಗಬೇಕು ಎಂಬೆಲ್ಲಾ ಒಗ್ಗಟುಗಳ ಉತ್ತರವನ್ನು ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಶಕ್ತಿಯೇ ಕಂಡು ಹಿಡಿಯಬೇಕು. ಲೇಖಕರ ರಂಜಿಸುವ ಆಟದಲ್ಲಿ
ಓದುವಾಗ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಮೈ ಮರೆತರೂ ಪುನಃ ಓದಬೇಕು.

ಆದರೂ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಕರು ಮತ್ತು ಲೇಖಕರು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾದ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಚಾರ ಮಾಡಿ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಅಂಗಡಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದೊರೆಯುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಲು ವಿಫಲವಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಖಂಡಿತ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ʼಆನೆ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇ ಸಂದು, ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಶುರುವಿಟ್ಟಲ್ಲೆ ಸಂತೆʼ ಎಂಬುವ ಆಡು ಮಾತಿದೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ ಕಡೆ.
ಜರ್ಮನಿಯ ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ನ ಪರ್ವತದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಹಿಜುಬಾ ಎಂಬುವ ವಿಚಿತ್ರ ಆಸಾಮಿಯದ್ದು ಅದೆ ಕಥೆ. ಅವನು ಹೋದದ್ದೆ ಊರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೆ ಕಸುಬು.ತಾನು ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕಿದ್ದ ಮನೆಯ ಸೇನಾಧಿಕಾರಿಯ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದ್ದದ್ದಷ್ಟೆ. ಅವನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬೀಳುವ ಸೇನಾಧಿಕಾರಿ. ಸುತ್ತ ಮುತ್ತ ಊರುಗಳಲ್ಲೆ ಸುತ್ತತ್ತಾ ಸೇನಾಧಿಕಾರಿಗೆ ಸಿಗದಂತೆ ಓಡಾಡುವ ಹಿಜುಬಾ, ಹಿಜುಬಾನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬೀಳುವ ಆಥಿಯಾ ಎಂಬ ಸುಂದರಿ.ಇವರದು ಒಂದು ಕಥೆ.
ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಮಾಡಲು, ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮುದ್ರ ಮಾರ್ಗ ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿದು ಬನ್ನಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಗುಲಾಮರ ಹಿಡಿದು ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾರುವ ಪೋರ್ಚುಗೀಸರು, ಅಂಥಹ ಪೋರ್ಚಗೀಸರ ಬೆನ್ನು ಬಿದ್ದ ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಮಾಯಕ ಗುಲಾಮ, ಹಡಗಿನ ತುಂಬ ಸಿಗುವ ಕಾಳುಮೆಣಸಿನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬಿದ್ದ ಕಾಸರಗೋಡಿನ ಒಬ್ಬ ನಿಷ್ಟಾವಂತ(ಈತ ನಿಜಕ್ಕು ನಿಷ್ಟಾವಂತ!) ಚಾಲಾಕಿ ಕಳ್ಳ , ಇವರದು ಒಂದು ಕಥೆ.
ಯಹೂದಿಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬಿದ್ದು ಅವರನ್ನು ಹಿಂಸಿಸಿ ಕೊಲ್ಲುತ್ತಿರುವ ನಾಜಿ ಸೇನೆ , ಎರಡನೆ ವಿಶ್ವಯುದ್ಧ, ಹೆಂಗಸರು ಮಕ್ಕಳು
ಅನುಭವಿಸಿದ ನೋವುಗಳು. ಇದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಮೂಲ ವಸ್ತು.
ಇವರೆಲ್ಲಾ ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೊಬ್ಬರು ಸಂಧಿಸುವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವುದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಸಂಯೋಜಿತ ವಸ್ತು.
ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ನಾನು ತುಂಬಾ ಓದುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕಾಫ್ಕಾ ಮತ್ತು ಟಾಲ್ಸ್ಟಾಯ್ನನ್ನು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ತುಂಬಾ ನೆನಪಿಸಿತು.
ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಪಾಶ್ಶಿಮಾತ್ಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ, ಬಿಯರ್ , ವೈನ್, ವೇಶ್ಯೆ, ಹಿಮಪಾತ, ಮಂಜು ಕವಿದ ಊರುಗಳು, ಕುದುರೆಗಳು, ಹೆಪ್ಪುಗಟ್ಟಿದ ನದಿಗಳು ಇರಬಹುದು.

ಜರ್ಮನಿಯ ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ನ ಪರ್ವತದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಹಿಜುಬಾ ಎಂಬುವ ವಿಚಿತ್ರ ಆಸಾಮಿಯದ್ದು ಅದೆ ಕಥೆ. ಅವನು ಹೋದದ್ದೆ ಊರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೆ ಕಸುಬು.ತಾನು ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕಿದ್ದ ಮನೆಯ ಸೇನಾಧಿಕಾರಿಯ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದ್ದದ್ದಷ್ಟೆ. ಅವನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬೀಳುವ ಸೇನಾಧಿಕಾರಿ. ಸುತ್ತ ಮುತ್ತ ಊರುಗಳಲ್ಲೆ ಸುತ್ತತ್ತಾ ಸೇನಾಧಿಕಾರಿಗೆ ಸಿಗದಂತೆ ಓಡಾಡುವ ಹಿಜುಬಾ, ಹಿಜುಬಾನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬೀಳುವ ಆಥಿಯಾ ಎಂಬ ಸುಂದರಿ.ಇವರದು ಒಂದು ಕಥೆ.
ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಮಾಡಲು, ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮುದ್ರ ಮಾರ್ಗ ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿದು ಬನ್ನಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಗುಲಾಮರ ಹಿಡಿದು ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾರುವ ಪೋರ್ಚುಗೀಸರು, ಅಂಥಹ ಪೋರ್ಚಗೀಸರ ಬೆನ್ನು ಬಿದ್ದ ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಮಾಯಕ ಗುಲಾಮ, ಹಡಗಿನ ತುಂಬ ಸಿಗುವ ಕಾಳುಮೆಣಸಿನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬಿದ್ದ ಕಾಸರಗೋಡಿನ ಒಬ್ಬ ನಿಷ್ಟಾವಂತ(ಈತ ನಿಜಕ್ಕು ನಿಷ್ಟಾವಂತ!) ಚಾಲಾಕಿ ಕಳ್ಳ , ಇವರದು ಒಂದು ಕಥೆ.
ಯಹೂದಿಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬಿದ್ದು ಅವರನ್ನು ಹಿಂಸಿಸಿ ಕೊಲ್ಲುತ್ತಿರುವ ನಾಜಿ ಸೇನೆ , ಎರಡನೆ ವಿಶ್ವಯುದ್ಧ, ಹೆಂಗಸರು ಮಕ್ಕಳು
ಅನುಭವಿಸಿದ ನೋವುಗಳು. ಇದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಮೂಲ ವಸ್ತು.
ಇವರೆಲ್ಲಾ ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೊಬ್ಬರು ಸಂಧಿಸುವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವುದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಸಂಯೋಜಿತ ವಸ್ತು.
ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ನಾನು ತುಂಬಾ ಓದುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕಾಫ್ಕಾ ಮತ್ತು ಟಾಲ್ಸ್ಟಾಯ್ನನ್ನು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ತುಂಬಾ ನೆನಪಿಸಿತು.
ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಪಾಶ್ಶಿಮಾತ್ಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ, ಬಿಯರ್ , ವೈನ್, ವೇಶ್ಯೆ, ಹಿಮಪಾತ, ಮಂಜು ಕವಿದ ಊರುಗಳು, ಕುದುರೆಗಳು, ಹೆಪ್ಪುಗಟ್ಟಿದ ನದಿಗಳು ಇರಬಹುದು.

ಲೇಖಕರು ಜರ್ಮನಿಯ ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ಗೆ ಬೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿದಾಗ ಕೊರೆಯುವ ಚಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹ್ಯೂಚೆಲ್ ಬರ್ಗ್ ಕಣಿವೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡ ಕತೆಯ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಎಳೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಾಗಿಸಿ ಎದುರಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಭಾರತದ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಪುಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪೋರ್ಚುಗೀಸರದ್ದೇ ಒಂದು ಅಧ್ಯಾಯ. ಆ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಕಾಲ್ಪನಿಕ ಪಾತ್ರ ಹಾಗು ಕಾಲ್ಪನಿಕ ಕತೆಯ ಮಿಶ್ರಣ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಆಸಕ್ತಿದಾಯಕವಾಗಿಸಿತು.
ಜರ್ಮನಿಯ ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ನಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಕೇರಳದ ಕಾಸರಗೋಡಿನ ತನಕ ಹೆಣೆದ ಕತೆಯು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಕಾಲಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಡೆದರೂ ಅದೆಷ್ಟೊ ಸಾವು-ನೋವು, ಪ್ರತಿಕಾರಗಳನೆಲ್ಲ ದಾಟಿ ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ನ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರ ಪ್ರೇಮ ಕತೆಗೆ ನಾಂದಿ ಹಾಡಿತ್ತು.
ಪೋರ್ಚುಗೀಸರು ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮುದ್ರ ಮಾರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿದು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಬೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತದ ಮಸಾಲೆ ಪದಾರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡು ಯೂರೋಪಿನ ದೇಶಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಾರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುಲು ಯೂರೋಪ್ ಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದ ರಾಜರ ಇಡೀ ರಾಜ್ಯವೇ ಬರಿದಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಪಾಶ್ಚಿಮಾತ್ಯ ದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿನ್ನಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಬೆಲೆ ಬಾಳುತ್ತಿತ್ತು ಭಾರತದ ದಾಲ್ಚಿನಿ, ಕಾಳುಮೆಣಸು, ಏಲಕ್ಕಿ, ಚಕ್ಕೆ, ಲವಂಗ, ಅರಶಿನಗಳು.
ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಪೋರ್ಚುಗೀಸರು ಬರುವ ಮಾರ್ಗದಲ್ಲೆ ಪೂರ್ವ ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಬುಡಕಟ್ಟು ಜನಾಂಗ ಹಾಗೂ ಆದಿವಾಸಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸೆರೆಹಿಡಿದು ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಗುಲಾಮರಾಗಿ ಮಾರುವ ಹೊಸ ವ್ಯವಹಾರವನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ಶುರುಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡರು.
ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಕತೆ ಈಗಿನ ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದು ಅಂತ್ಯಕಾಣುವುದು ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತುವೆನ್ನಬಹುದು..
ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ನ ರಕ್ತ ಹೆಪ್ಪುಗಟ್ಟುವಂತಹ ಚಳಿ, ಸೆಟೆದು ನಿಶ್ಚಲವಾದ ನೆಕ್ಕರ್ ನದಿ, ಹ್ಯೂಚೆಲ್ ಬರ್ಗ್ ಪರ್ವತ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಕಣಿವೆಗಳು, ರೋಜರ್ ಫೀಲ್ಡ್ ಎನ್ನುವ ಕಳ್ಳ ಖದೀಮರಿಗೆ, ರಸಿಕರಿಗೆ, ಜೂಜುಕೋರರಿಗೆ ಸ್ವರ್ಗದಂತಿರುವ ನಗರ ಹಾಗು ಲಿಸ್ಬನ್ ನ ಬೀದಿ ಬೀದಿಗಳ ಜೊತೆಗೆ, ಗೋವ, ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು, ಕಣ್ಣೂರು, ಮೀನುಗಾರಿಕೆ, ಕಂಬಳ, ಯಕ್ಷಗಾನ ಎಲ್ಲವು ತುಂಬ ಹಿತವೆನ್ನಿಸಿದವು.
ಎರಡನೇ ಮಹಾಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಾದ ಸಾವುನೋವುಗಳು, ಅನಾಚಾರ, ಅತ್ಯಾಚಾರ, ಯಹೂದಿಗಳ ನಿಶ್ಕರುಣೆಯಿಂದ ಬೀದಿ ನಾಯಿಗಳಂತೆ ಸೆರೆ ಹಿಡಿದು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಚಿತ್ರ ಹಿಂಸೆ, ಗುಲಾಮಗಿರಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಘಾಸಿಗೊಳಿಸಿತು.
ಹಿಜುಬಾ ಮತ್ತು ಆಥಿಯಾಳ ಪ್ರೇಮ ಕತೆ, ಗುಲಾಮ ಟೋಬೋನ ಪ್ರತಿಕಾರ, ಹಳಬ ಜೀವನ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡ ರೀತಿ ಎಲ್ಲವು ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಚ್ಚೊತ್ತಿದಂತಾಗುವುದು.
ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ ಕತೆಯ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಓದಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವಂತ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ. ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಬೇಸರ ಮೂಡಿಸದಂತಹ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಸಾಗುವ ಕತೆಯನ್ನೊಳಗೊಂಡ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ವಿಂಟರ್ಸ್ ಆಫ್ ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ ಲೇಖಕರ ಮೊದಲ ಪುಸ್ತಕವೆನ್ನಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

Book ಹೆಸರು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಈ bookಅನ್ನು ಓದಬೇಕು ಅನ್ನುವ list ಗೆ ಸಹ ಸೇರಿಸಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಆದರೆ ಸಹ ಓದುಗರ ಒಳ್ಳೆ review ನೋಡಿದ ನಂತರ ಓದಲು ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು.
It definitely did not disappoint ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು.
ಒಂದು geographic region ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಶುರು ಆಗಿ, ಮತ್ತೊಂದ್ geographic region ಗೆ ಕಥೆ ಬೆಸಿಯುತ್ತ ಹೋದ ರೀತಿ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ.
Starting ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಸರುಗಳು ಆಚೆ ಈಚೆ ಆಗ್ತಾ ಇತ್ತು, register ಆಗೋದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ time ಹಿಡಿತು, ಆದ್ರೆ ಹೋಗ್ತಾ ಹೋಗ್ತಾ ಆ flow ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು.
ಹಳುಬ ಇಷ್ಟ ಆದ.

ಆದ್ರೆ ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಕಡೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ "ಹ"ಕಾರ "ಅ" ಕಾರಗಳು ಉಲ್ಟಾ ಪಲ್ಟಾ ಆಗಿ, ಓದೋಕೆ ಕಿರಿ ಕಿರಿ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿತು.

ಒಂದು geographic region ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಶುರು ಆಗಿ, ಮತ್ತೊಂದ್ geographic region ಗೆ ಕಥೆ ಬೆಸಿಯುತ್ತ ಹೋದ ರೀತಿ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ.
Starting ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಸರುಗಳು ಆಚೆ ಈಚೆ ಆಗ್ತಾ ಇತ್ತು, register ಆಗೋದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ time ಹಿಡಿತು, ಆದ್ರೆ ಹೋಗ್ತಾ ಹೋಗ್ತಾ ಆ flow ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು.

ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ positive reviewಗಳನ್ನೇ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಹಲವು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮಳಿಗೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗದೇ ಕಡೆಗೇ ಲೇಖಕರಿಗೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಿ ಖರೀದಿ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾಯಿತು. ಲೇಖಕರು - ಪ್ರಕಾಶಕರು ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗಮನ ಹರಿಸಬೇಕು.
ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ positive reviewಗಳನ್ನೇ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಹಲವು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮಳಿಗೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗದೇ ಕಡೆಗೇ ಲೇಖಕರಿಗೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಿ ಖರೀದಿ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾಯಿತು. ಲೇಖಕರು - ಪ್ರಕಾಶಕರು ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗಮನ ಹರಿಸಬೇಕು.

ತುಂಬಾ ದಿನದ ನಂತರ ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ತೇಜೋ ತುಂಗಭದ್ರಾ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಅತಿಯಾಗಿ ಅನಿಸೋಕೆ ಶುರುವಾಗಿದ್ದು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಿಂದ. ಹಾಗಂತ ತೇಜೋ ತುಂಗಭದ್ರಾ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ರೀತಿಯೇ ಇದು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದರೆ ನಮ್ಮದೇ ತಪ್ಪು. ಆದರೆ ಅಂತಹದ್ದೇ ತುಡಿತ ನಮಗೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಿಂದ ಸಿಗುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೋಸವಿಲ್ಲ.
ಜರ್ಮನಿಯ ಹಿಮಪಾತದ ಬೌಗೋಳಿಕ ಚಿತ್ರಣದಿಂದ ಶುರುವಾಗುವ ಕಥೆ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಇಡೀ ಭೂಗೋಳದ ನಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಸುತ್ತು ಹಾಕಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿಶ್ವಯುದ್ಧ, ಗೋವಾ, ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು, ವಾಸ್ಕೊಡಗಾಮ, ಕೊಲಂಬಸ್, ಸಮುದ್ರಯಾನ ಅಬ್ಬಾ ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೋ ಬಂದ್ವಿ ಅನಿಸದೇ ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಕೂಡ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವೂ ಬೋರ್ ಹೊಡಿಸದೆ ಒಂದಕ್ಕೊಂದು ಸಂಬಂಧವನ್ನು ಕಥೆಯೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ನಾವೇ ಜೋಡಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಒಂದೊಳ್ಳೆ ಪತ್ತೇದಾರಿ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಫಿಲ್ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾ ಕಣ್ಣ ಮುಂದೆಯೇ ಒಂದು ಸಿನಿಮಾ ನೋಡುತ್ತಾ ಅದರೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ನಾವು ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂಬ ಅನುಭವ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ನನ್ನ ಓದಲೇ ಬೇಕಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಸಾಲಿಗೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಏನೇನೋ ಗೀಚಿ ಬರೆದು ಪಬ್ಲಿಶ್ ಆಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಇಂತಹ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಕಣ್ಮರೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿವೆಯಾ?
ನಮಗೆ ಓದಿ ಆ ಕಥೆ ಮರೆತು ಹೋದರೆ ಅಥ್ವಾ ಅದನ್ನು ಚಿಂತಿಸದೆ, ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಚಿಂತನೆಗೆ ತಳ್ಳದೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ತಲುಪುವಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದೇ ನನ್ನ ಭಾವನೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಹ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕಾಡದೇ ಬಿಡಲಾರದು.
ಜರ್ಮನಿಯ ಹಿಮಪಾತದ ಬೌಗೋಳಿಕ ಚಿತ್ರಣದಿಂದ ಶುರುವಾಗುವ ಕಥೆ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಇಡೀ ಭೂಗೋಳದ ನಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಸುತ್ತು ಹಾಕಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿಶ್ವಯುದ್ಧ, ಗೋವಾ, ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು, ವಾಸ್ಕೊಡಗಾಮ, ಕೊಲಂಬಸ್, ಸಮುದ್ರಯಾನ ಅಬ್ಬಾ ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೋ ಬಂದ್ವಿ ಅನಿಸದೇ ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಕೂಡ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವೂ ಬೋರ್ ಹೊಡಿಸದೆ ಒಂದಕ್ಕೊಂದು ಸಂಬಂಧವನ್ನು ಕಥೆಯೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ನಾವೇ ಜೋಡಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಒಂದೊಳ್ಳೆ ಪತ್ತೇದಾರಿ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಫಿಲ್ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾ ಕಣ್ಣ ಮುಂದೆಯೇ ಒಂದು ಸಿನಿಮಾ ನೋಡುತ್ತಾ ಅದರೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ನಾವು ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಎಂಬ ಅನುಭವ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ನನ್ನ ಓದಲೇ ಬೇಕಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಸಾಲಿಗೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಏನೇನೋ ಗೀಚಿ ಬರೆದು ಪಬ್ಲಿಶ್ ಆಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಇಂತಹ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಕಣ್ಮರೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿವೆಯಾ?
ನಮಗೆ ಓದಿ ಆ ಕಥೆ ಮರೆತು ಹೋದರೆ ಅಥ್ವಾ ಅದನ್ನು ಚಿಂತಿಸದೆ, ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಚಿಂತನೆಗೆ ತಳ್ಳದೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ತಲುಪುವಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದೇ ನನ್ನ ಭಾವನೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಹ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕಾಡದೇ ಬಿಡಲಾರದು.

ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷಿನಲ್ಲಿ "Don't judge the book by it's Cover" ಅನ್ನೋ ಒಂದು ನಾಣ್ಣುಡಿ ಇದೆ, ಇನ್ಮೇಲೆ "Don't judge the book by it's Title" ಅನ್ನುವುದನ್ನೂ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತೇನೆ ಕೇಳಿ,"ವಿಂಟರ್ಸ್ ಆಫ್ ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್" ಎನ್ನುವ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆ ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ನನಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟು ಹಿಡಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವೂ ಇದೆ ಕೇಳಿ, ಅಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲೋ ಆರೇಳು ಸಾವಿರ ಕಿಲೋಮೀಟರ್ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಜರ್ಮನಿಯ ಒಂದು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಎಂದೇ ಹೇಳಬಹುದಾದ "ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್" ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಎರಡನೆಯದಾಗಿ, ಅವಶ್ಯವಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ ಒಬ್ಬ ಲೇಖಕನ ಮೊದಲ ಕನ್ನಡ ಕೃತಿಯ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಬೇಕಿತ್ತೇನೋ ಎನ್ನುವ ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ. ಆದರೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ನಂತರ ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಬದಲಾಯಿತು ಎಂದೇ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು, " ಅರೆ! ಈ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆ ಕಥೆಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಸೂಕ್ತವಾಗಿದೆ" ಎನಿಸಿದ್ದೂ ಉಂಟು. ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ನಿನ ಭೌಗೋಳಿಕ ಪರಿಸರ, ರಕ್ತ ಹೆಪ್ಪುಗಟ್ಟಿಸುವಂತಹ ಚಳಿಯ ತೀರ್ವತೆಯ ಅದ್ಭುತ ವಿವರಣೆಯಷ್ಟೇ ಸಾಕಾಯ್ತು "ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್" ಎಂಬ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆ ಕಥೆಗೆ ಅನುರೂಪವಾಗಿದೆ ಎನ್ನಿಸಲು.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಘಟನೆಗಳು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದರೂ ಯಾವುದೇ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಿವೆ, ಪ್ರತಿ ಪಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೂ ಕಥೆಗೆ ಪುಷ್ಟಿ ನೀಡುವಂತಹ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆಯಿದೆ. ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳಿಬ್ಬರ ಪ್ರಣಯ, ಆಫ್ರಿಕನ್ ಬುಡಕಟ್ಟು ಜನಾಂಗದ ಮೇಲಾದ ದೌರ್ಜನ್ಯ, ಒಂದು ಮತ್ತು ಎರಡನೇ ಮಹಾಯುದ್ಧಗಳಿಂದ ಜನಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮಾಜದ ಮೇಲಾದ ಪರಿಣಾಮ, ಮಾದಕ ವಸ್ತುಗಳು, ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಮಾನ್ಯತೆ ಪಡೆದ ವೇಶ್ಯಾಗೃಹಗಳು ಹೀಗೆ ಹಲವು ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಲೇಖಕರು ತಮ್ಮ ಮೊದಲ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನದಲ್ಲೇ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟವಾದ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತುವನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು. ಓದುಗರನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತ ಸುಲಲಿತ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಲೇಖಕರದ್ದು.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಘಟನೆಗಳು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದರೂ ಯಾವುದೇ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಿವೆ, ಪ್ರತಿ ಪಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೂ ಕಥೆಗೆ ಪುಷ್ಟಿ ನೀಡುವಂತಹ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆಯಿದೆ. ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳಿಬ್ಬರ ಪ್ರಣಯ, ಆಫ್ರಿಕನ್ ಬುಡಕಟ್ಟು ಜನಾಂಗದ ಮೇಲಾದ ದೌರ್ಜನ್ಯ, ಒಂದು ಮತ್ತು ಎರಡನೇ ಮಹಾಯುದ್ಧಗಳಿಂದ ಜನಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮಾಜದ ಮೇಲಾದ ಪರಿಣಾಮ, ಮಾದಕ ವಸ್ತುಗಳು, ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಮಾನ್ಯತೆ ಪಡೆದ ವೇಶ್ಯಾಗೃಹಗಳು ಹೀಗೆ ಹಲವು ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಲೇಖಕರು ತಮ್ಮ ಮೊದಲ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನದಲ್ಲೇ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕ್ಲಿಷ್ಟವಾದ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತುವನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು. ಓದುಗರನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತ ಸುಲಲಿತ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಲೇಖಕರದ್ದು.

ಪುಟ ತಿರುವಿದ ವೇಗಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದೇ ದಿನ ಮುಗಿಸಿದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ. Absolute page turner. ಪುಸ್ತಕ ತುಂಬಾ ದಪ್ಪ ಇಲ್ಲದ್ದರಿಂದ ಕೈ ನೋವು ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಳ್ಳೇದಾಯ್ತು, ಆದರೆ ಎರಡನೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬೇಗ ಬಂದರೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಪುಟ ತಿರುವಬಹುದು.
ಇಂಥದ್ದೊಂದು ಕಥಾ ಹಂದರ ನನ್ನ ತಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಓಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನನಗೆ ಬಹಳವೇ ಇಷ್ಟವಾಯ್ತು. ಯುರೋಪಿನ ಗ್ರೇ ವಿಂಟರ್ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನ ಬಹಳ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಲೇಖಕರ ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸಿರುವ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಶುರುವಾದ ಪ್ರೇರಣೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಮೊದಲಾರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಹೊಡೆಯುತ್ತಿತು. ಇನ್ನು ಕಾಲ ಮತ್ತು ದೇಶಾತೀತ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ರೋಚಕ.

The fusion of professionalism and cool sophistication in this literary work promises a unique and engaging reading experience that transcends time and language.
Emerging author Sudhakara Ramaiah initiates the narrative with a thoughtful foreword and preface, providing a glimpse into the genesis of the story that took an unexpected detour for several years. The initial chapters, despite my decades-long hiatus from reading, seemed to defy the passage of time, presenting a challenging reading experience. A second perusal confirmed the initial impression, underscoring the novel's persistent complexity.
Nevertheless, the narrative takes a transformative turn with the introduction of the enigmatic figure—Hijuba, a character so finely etched that it stands as a paragon of perfect characterization. The plot gains momentum, effortlessly navigating the realms of past and present with swift precision.
weaving the story along with the rich tapestry of geographical locations especially Natural landscapes, people, traditions and customs, food, clothing, historical significance, social practices, religious beliefs, economic activities, etc.. was really wonderful!

Terms such as 'Veerya,' 'Balitha,' 'Beeja,' 'Saavira Maithuna,' etc., contribute to a narrative that may be perceived as explicit. Additionally, the portrayal of female characters, including Athiya, Arniya, Angelica, Nathalia, and Kathaline, may be interpreted by some readers as lacking a nuanced exploration of women's morality within the context of the story. ಮುಖ ಪುಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸುವಂತೆ ಅಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ, ಅದೇ ರೀತಿಯ ವಾತಾವರಣವಿದ್ದಾಗ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಕೈಗೆತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡೆ.
ಲಯನ್ ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ ನ ಚಳಿಗಾಲದ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನು, ನಮ್ಮ ವಾತಾವರದಲ್ಲಿನ ಚಳಿಗಾಲದಲ್ಲೇ ಓದಿದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಸಾಮ್ಯತೆ ಸಿಗುವುದೇನೋ ಎಂದುಕೊಡಿದ್ದೆ.

ಟೋಬೋ ನ ಕತೆಯು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಗುಲಾಮಗಿರಿ, ದೌರ್ಜನ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು, ಅದರಿಂದ ಅಸಹಾಯಕಾರಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಾಣ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವರ ಮೇಲೆ ಮರುಕ ಹುಟ್ಟುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಹಿಜುಬಾನ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ವಿವರಣೆ ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟೊಂದು ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿರದೆ ಸಹಜವಾಗೇ ಇದ್ದರೂ, ಸಾಗುತ್ತ ಗಂಭೀರವಾಗಿ, ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ ರೀತಿಯ ತಿರುವು ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಹಂಗಿದ್ಹಾಂಗೆ ಓದಿದಾಗ ಹಾಯ್ ಎನಿಸುವ, ಭಾವನೆಗಳ ಅಲ್ಲೋಲಕಲ್ಲೋಲದ ಥ್ರಿಲ್ಲರ್ ಡ್ರಾಮಾ ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ ಛಾಯಾಗ್ರಹಣದ ಮೂಲಕ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಘಟನೆಗಳ ಸುತ್ತ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಸಿನೆಮಾ ನೋಡಿದ ಅನುಭವ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯದು. ಹೊಸ ಲೇಖಕ, ಹೊಸ ಕೃತಿ, ಹೊಸ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನದ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಿಂದ ಬಹುದೂರ ನಿಂತಿದೆ ಈ ಕೃತಿ. ಕಾವ್ಯಾತ್ಮಕ ಹಿಡಿತದ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನ ಹತ್ತಿರದಿಂದ ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೆ. ಹೊಸಬರ ಹೊಸಕೃತಿಯಂತ ದೇವರಾಣೆ ಅನಿಸಲ್ಲ. ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ಇತಿಹಾಸ, ಡ್ರಾಮಾದ ಮಿಕ್ಸು " ಉಳಿದವರು ಕಂಡಂತೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಾಂಟೆಜ್ ಪಾಯಿಂಟ್ " ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಗುವ ಶೈಲಿ ಬಹಳ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತೆ. ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಂತೆ ಬರಿಯ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ತೆರೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದೆ ಅನಿಸಿದರೂ ಕತಯಿರೋದೆ ಅವುಗಳ ನಡುವೆ. ಪಾತ್ರಗಳೋ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನವೂ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗೆ ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಅವುಗಳ ಪಾತ್ರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ತೂಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವಂತೆ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಲೇಖಕ. ಇಂತದ್ದೊಂದು ಕೃತಿ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಕಿತ್ತು.

ತಡೀರಿ ಒಂದು ನಿಮಿಷ ಈಗೊಂದು ಕಥೆಯ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಪರಿಮಳ ಸಿಗುವ ಹಾಗೆ ಇನ್ನೊಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಪದಗಳ ಹೇಳುವೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಕೇಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಿ.
ದರೋಡೆ, ಕಳ್ಳತನ, ವರ್ಜೀನಿಟಿ (ನಿವಂದುಕೊಂಡದ್ದಲ್ಲ), ವಜ್ರ, ಕೋಳಿ, ಸಂಜೆ, ಹೆಪ್ಪುಗಟ್ಟಿದ ನೆಕ್ಕರ್ ನದಿ, ಮೂಳೆ ಕೊರೆಯುವ ಚಳಿ, ಹಿಮಪಾತ, ಸೂಳೆಗಾರಿಕೆ, ಸಮುದ್ರಯಾನ, ಪೈರೇಟ್ಸ್, ಹಿಮದಿಂದ ಮುಚ್ಚಿಹೋದ ಪರ್ವತ ಇವೆಲ್ಲದರ ನಡುವೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ಪ್ರೇಮ, ಕಾಮ, ಸ್ನೇಹ, ಕರುಣೆ, ಕಠೋರ, ದ್ವೇಷ, ಸೇಡು, ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯ, ಹುಡುಕಾಟ, ದುರಾಸೆ ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಇತಿಹಾಸದೊಂದಿಗೆ ತುಳುಕು ಹಾಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳೋದು.
ಹೌದಾ? ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಓದಿದ ಬೆಲ್ಲ ಹಂಪಮ್ಮ ತೇಜೋ ತುಂಗಭದ್ರ ನೆನಪಿಗೆ ಬಂತ. ಅಂತದ್ದೆ ಅಮೋಘ ಅನುಭವ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನ ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಿಗೋದು.

ಕೆಲವು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಸಮಯ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಗುಟುಕು ಗುಟುಕಾಗಿ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಓದಬೇಕಾಗಿ ಬಂದರೆ, ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದೇ ಗುಟುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸುವವರೆಗೂ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಸಮಾಧಾನವೇ ಸಿಗದು. ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಎರಡನೇ ಪಂಕ್ತಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು. ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸುವ ತನಕ ಮೇಲೇಳಲು ಆಗಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲ.
ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುವ ಮೊದಲು, ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂಥಹ ಶೈಲಿಯ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಬಹು ವಿರಳ.ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ
ಬಂದದ್ದು ಖುಷಿಯಾಯಿತು.
ಜರ್ಮನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ವಿಶ್ವಯುದ್ಧಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಯೆಹೂದಿಗಳ ಮೇಲಿನ ದಬ್ಬಾಳಿಕೆಯು, ಭಾರತದ ಕಾಸರಗೋಡುವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಒಬ್ಬ ಮಹಾನ್ ಮೋಜುಗಾರನ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಪರಿಣಾಮ ಬೀರಿದವು, ಆತ ಕಾಸರಗೋಡಿನಿಂದ ಯಾಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹೇಗೆ ಯುರೋಪಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸಿದ, ಪೋರ್ಚುಗೀಸರು ಹೇಗೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಮಾಯಕ ಕಪ್ಪು ಗುಲಾಮ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಚಂದವಾದ ಕುಟುಂಬವನ್ನು ಹಿಂಸಿಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಆತ ಪ್ರತಿಯಾಗಿ ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡದ್ದು ಹೇಗೆ, ಎಲ್ಲಾ ರೀತಿಯ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಚಟಗಳಿಗೆ ದಾಸನಾಗಿದ್ದವನೊಬ್ಬ ತನ್ನ ಯುವ ಪ್ರೇಯಸಿಯನ್ನು ಪರಿಶುದ್ಧವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಿದ ರೀತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಪ್ರೀತಿಗೆ ಶತ್ರುವಾಗಿರುವ ಎರಡನೇ ವಿಶ್ವಯುದ್ಧ ಹೀಗೆ ಹತ್ತು ಹಲವಾರು ಘಟನೆಗಳು ಒಂದಕ್ಕೊಂದು ಸಂಬಂಧ ಸೃಷ್ಠಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಗಂಟು ಹಾಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ವೇಳೆಗೆ, ನಾವೂ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಜೊತೆ ಗಂಟು ಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡಿರುತ್ತೇವೆ.
ಪ್ರತಿ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಗೆಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಂತೆ ನಾವೇ ಗೆದ್ದೆವು ಅನ್ನುವ ಭಾವನೆ ಮೂಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಉತ್ತಮ ಓದು ನಮ್ಮದಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕುತೂಹಲದ ತುತ್ತ ತುದಿಗೆ ಕರೆದೋಯ್ದು, ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಎರಡನೇ ಭಾಗದ ಮೊದಲ ಪುಟದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಕೊನೆಯಾಗುವುದು ಮಂದಹಾಸ ಮೂಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಈ ವರ್ಷದ ಇಷ್ಟವಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ʼವಿಂಟರ್ಸ್ ಆಫ್ ಲಯನ್ಗಾರ್ಟನ್ʼ ವಿಶೇಷವಾದದ್ದು.
ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುವ ಮೊದಲು, ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂಥಹ ಶೈಲಿಯ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಬಹು ವಿರಳ.ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ
ಬಂದದ್ದು ಖುಷಿಯಾಯಿತು.

ಪ್ರತಿ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಗೆಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಂತೆ ನಾವೇ ಗೆದ್ದೆವು ಅನ್ನುವ ಭಾವನೆ ಮೂಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಉತ್ತಮ ಓದು ನಮ್ಮದಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕುತೂಹಲದ ತುತ್ತ ತುದಿಗೆ ಕರೆದೋಯ್ದು, ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಎರಡನೇ ಭಾಗದ ಮೊದಲ ಪುಟದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಕೊನೆಯಾಗುವುದು ಮಂದಹಾಸ ಮೂಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
