Elizabeth Baldwin Hazelton has had many years of experience in writing for radio and television. Among other outstanding scripts, she has done a score of television screenplays for the series "Death Valley Days." Miss Hazelton has also been a professional actress and for twelve years taught radio and television writing in Los Angeles. She now lives and works in South Laguna, California, in a house overlooking the Pacific Ocean. (from the 1971 Book "The Haunted Cove")
Overall, I didn't think this book was as fun as "The Haunted Cove", which I read over and over as a kid. But, this book would probably still be fun for kids to read, especially if they like books with ghosts.
Fun, old, has the right feel. But man do these kids get into trouble! But it’s nice. It casts a relief against our current ultra safe culture. Kevin is annoying in the middle, but ah well. Frick’n Kevin.
Christie, her mother & her brother Kevin are visiting Ireland. An old gypsy woman prophesys that Christie will find a treasure, & gives her an amulet. Christie, her family & a gypsy boy named Collum explore some castle ruins. The kids do stupid stuff (I mean risking-their-life-stupid stuff); Christie is 'sensitive', sees ghosts & loses the amulet; Collum manipulates her sensitivity. They find the treasure & Collum steals it. There's a huge long chase through underground tunnels (that seems three times as long) & Christie gets knocked into an underground lake.
But Collum saves them & gives back the treasure & it's donated to the museum & they all celebrate at the gypsy camp The End.
Bleh.

This was offered as a Weekly Reader when I was in grade school. I was a poor reader and this book was above my reading level. I found it amazing reading it now that this was considered 4th grade level. Now, I think it would be 6th or 7th grade! Being of Irish descent, I wanted to read it. A fun read, a bit surprising how scary it could be in parts, but Irish legends tend to be that way! A great Hallowe'en read!
This was my mom's book as a child, and she gave it to me to read when I was a kid. It was always one of my favorites, probably because it was set in Ireland.
