Clark Kent visits Japan as Superman, traveling the country in pursuit of Meshi! What is Meshi? A new villain? A new ally? None of those! It's all about restaurants and exciting new food as Superman tours culinary delights!?
As the strongest man on Earth, Superman works hard every day, and one of his favorite things to do is eat lunch in Japan.
Some days, he's admonishing the Flash for eating super-fast rather than savoring a wonderful bowl of udon noodles. Other days, he's competing with his archnemesis, Lex Luthor, for Pixtagram status and discouraging Cyborg from paying too much attention to reviews on gourmet food sites.
But when he takes an interview with Lois Lane, Superman will need to use all of his abilities to not look nervous at lunch with the woman he loves!
Honestly glad that this series is over as it became more repetitive with this last volume. Entertaining series as a whole, though. Just a bit too long. Very fun read filled with cool bonus Easter eggs throughout.
This is one of the most ridiculous and bizarre Superman stories that I have ever read. I laughed so many times. I can’t say that any of the characters are acting in an iconic DC Comics fashion, this has to be looked at as a parody. But I just love how silly and crazy it is.
Joke’s on me. It was all an ad. It was fire, though. A totally unhinged and out of pocket time, but it was really funny and charming, and the art was weird and gorgeous at the same time. Read this if you want to feel like you’re hallucinating 6/10 there were too many insane quotes for me to narrow it down to one so um enjoy “Superman! You were just about to plant a super amnesia kiss on me, weren’t you?! I said I wanted to reset my memory, but I didn’t mean literally!” “Stop treating me like I’m the ‘friend with a Nintendo,’ Batman.” “You cling to life like a cockroach, Superman!” “Spinach was my rationalization.” “This is partially because she was in the Phantom Zone, so please forgive her.” “When showing a product to young people, it’s easier to get their attention if you do it like a YouTuber.” “I don’t like the insinuation that the rest of the universe looks down on me, but I’ll let it pass.” “Lex Luthor is Superman’s rival as well as his stalker.” “Sustainable Luthor, reusing an empty deluxe seaweed bento container as a supply case in a drawer.” “Note: the Royal Family probably does not, in fact, frequent family restaurants, bust since this is the final chapter, let’s overlook Clark’s comment.” Plus, Clark somehow hung up on a telepathic conversation. I didn’t even know that was possible
Here we have another hilarious volume of Superman vs. Meshi - and it includes a Death of Superman parody! This is great for me because I just read the original Death story from the 1990s.
On top of that we've got Miyagawa's take on Supergirl (yay!), the extended Kent family showing up at a memorial for Pa, the development of Clark and Lois's relationship, and an absolutely fantastic chapter with Lex Luthor. Lex has noticed all the time Superman is spending in Japan, so he opens a LexCorp office in Tokyo! Because - as the narrator notes - "Lex Luthor is Superman's rival as well as his stalker."
Sadly, this is the final volume. I've found this to be a really delightful series - combining DC with manga to fantastic results. I like that it's not afraid to have fun with the characters. It's wacky and silly but this Superman also has a lot of heart - he just happens to be obsessed with Japanese food and pulling everyone in his orbit into this obsession with him!
A very satisfying conclusion to the series. I could've read several more volumes of Superman coming up with excuses to gorge himself on Japanese food, but the slow expansion of superhero fights and other non-food plots were a good indication that it was time to stop before it lost its charm. You absolutely do not need to know anything about any of the superheroes to enjoy this series. However, some familiarity with Japanese customs would be helpful as some elements are left unexplained in the text itself.
A fun series, but I got a little bit bored of it by the end. You could say the food went a little stale.
Atleast it didn't overstay its welcome and ended nicely.
I had known about this series long before I read it, I thought it was just gonna be dumb, but it was honestly a lot of fun, and I'm glad I tried something different. Though j don't think that food manga is the genre for me, it makes me too hungry, and the only thing that held my interest in the end was the actual superman plot, even though they only really touched those lightly, in-between meals.
This quite possible may be the dumbest comic ever written. It starts off with Superman using his super Amnesia kiss to make Lois Lane forget he's Clark Kent immediately after he tells her. Then he does the same thing to Batman so they can have a second lunch. Later on, they do a version of Superman's death where the Justice League eats food from a microwave while Superman is in a coma and they talk about how great microwaved food is. This thing is so dumb. If only negative infinity stars were an option on Goodreads.
I think this is my favorite in series, simply because it knows what it needs to be for entertainment - food pr0n with Superman and wacky character moments. We have a Clark Kent & Lex Litjot lunch date and an almost kiss with Superman and Batman, and I can't not give accolades for that level of unhingedment.
One of the goofiest and most fun superhero stories I’ve read in a long time. Superhero plus food manga is a combination I wouldn’t have thought would work but it sure as hell does.
I will likely read this again someday, which is a big compliment from me because I rarely reread anything.
Maybe if I was familiar with the restaurant chains he kept visiting, I would have more of an emotional attachment to this series. As it stands, I’m just glad it’s over.
So good! So ridiculous and absurd and funny. Great Japanese food revives Superman after his battle with Doomsday! Superman's super-amnesia kiss used on Batman!!
Continuing on from the first volume, this is a perfect silly romp. Somehow the joke still hasn't worn thin. I could read a thousand adventures of Superman eating at Japanese chain restaurants.
