Deadpool has been a hit or miss character for me. In the hands of some writers (I count the movies in this category), he is a very funny and amusing character who, simultaneously, is a bad-ass. In other hands he's a boring, trite, poorly written mess with the humor being akin to fart jokes. Thankfully, Victor Gischler "gets" Deadpool and writes him superbly.
The Elders of the universe are facing a terrible threat to the entire galaxy. In order to prevent this fate, they recruit Deadpool and he, in turn, recruits Deadpools from alternate realities to form the Deadpool Corps. The Corps then goes on a hilarious and destructive romp through the galaxy to defeat this massive threat and then go on for further amusing adventures.
The artwork is very good. The stories are funny and cool at the same time. The Deadpool Corps is a great concept, and it works very well as a comic. This is one of the best Deadpool comics I've read and a welcome addition to my Comics collection. As a side note, the final story about The Deadpool Family by Cullen Bunn was disappointing and not to my liking, so I ignored it as filler.
Since the Joe Kelly era of Deadpool, the character is supposed to be the Dumb Fun anti-hero of Marvel. Unfortunately, it often leans on the dumb and replaces the fun with "random pop culture references."
While the Daniel Way run on Deadpool serves as the first excellent run of Dumb, Fun Deadpool That Fits Into The Wider Continuity, this collection is a Dumb Fun Deadpool-Centric Nonsense Ride. If not funny, it's at least much more humorous than the Fabien Nicieza run. It has an easy-to-follow plot that has absolutely no bearing on any other book in the Marvel Universe. Everything you need to know about all of the characters are in here.
If you're in the mood for something incredibly stupid but not annoyingly immature, this is one of the best Deadpool books to check out. It also might be the best book featuring some art by Rob Liefeld.
Though slightly dated in its depiction of women and the lack of diverse characterization that easily emerges when the core cast is a team of variants, Deadpool Corps retains a charm that reminds me of my teenage years. The storytelling is occasionally messy, but the Deadpool Corps is less a book one reads for plot than an invitation to see what kind of shenanigans Deadpool would get in it if everyone on his team was just as unhinged as he is. Where else can one read the Merc with the Mouth ally with a lady, dog, child, and disembodied version of himself?
Probably the silliest Deadpool collection I've read. Alternate universe versions of Deadpool come together to save the day. This actually happens about halfway through the volume. then they pal around in their space ship "Bea Arthur" until the Elder Gods get sick of their antics and send all the Deadpools home. Lots of fun to be had but the overall story isn't that great.
