Finding Mogha

Rate this book
Can the sound of a voice ignite a soul-deep passion in a sworn enemy?

Dani Myers is on the run and running out of time. Her discovery of a young Korthan Hellhound in a lab sends her on a desperate mission. The pup isn’t some obscure test animal; it is a sentient mogha that can speak. The last thing she needs as she tries to save the creature is to have her ship shot out from under her.

K’vyn doesn’t hate all humans, just the ones that won’t cease terraforming Korthan worlds. Their disregard for life has driven his people to the brink of all-out war. When a human supply freighter shows up in Korthan territory near the beloved mogha home world, he is duty bound to rid the galaxy of another human ship. A distress call as the ship crashes creates an unexpected soul-deep pull inside him.

Dani’s decision to smuggle the mogha called C’hase back to his home world might not have been her smartest move, but she felt she had no choice when she overheard plans to terraform the animal’s home planet. Now, without help from the Korthan who shot her down, she’ll never be able to warn the Mogha inhabitants of impending doom.

She isn’t sure which surprises her more after she crashes on an unknown planet—the fact that she is still alive, or the mutual attraction between her and K’vyn, the Korthan who did the shooting. Is it possible a Korthan and a human can work together to save C’hase and the mogha home world, or will they be caught between those that want to terraform and the Korthans determined to save the mogha from extinction?

A cargo ship pilot and her alien pet rescuees are on a mission and a her supposed enemy might just be who she needs to succeed. I've enjoyed a few others stories in Kyndra Hatch's The Fall universe and adore the mogha dog-like creatures who speak telepathically and make a soul-deep connection with their alpha- the one person who can hear their voice, but also the soul mates enemies-to-lovers romances set again a galaxy at war.

Finding Mogha is the second of three standalone novellas set during the war years between the Korthans and the humans and there are also two books set after the war. They all connect loosely so can be read in any order, I've found.

Dani is a human cargo pilot in an older ship headed to find the planet of her mogha rescuee. She saved the little puppy and his odd alien pet and now she must get the puppy who has psychically connected with her back to his home. On the way, she is shot at by an enemy patrol ship and crashlands on a deserted planet. Her enemy, a big Korthan who knows more about her alien pet rescuees than she does has to come to her rescue.

I appreciated the back and forth between Dani and K'vyn. He jumps to some wrong conclusions about what she's doing at first and that causes trouble, but he feels a weird connection to her and that has him more confused than ever. Good thing he has a sentient ship to help him sort it all out. Communication gradually irons out their issues so that Dani can trust and share what she's really doing out there in that part of space. Now, the story gets exciting and they have a mutual need to save a whole species before Dani's own people can destroy them.

There is a somewhat abrupt end which I've come to expect from these stories, but still fulfilling and leaving me wanting more.

I read Finding Mogha in one of the Pets in Space anthologies as was completely entranced by the sentient 'hellhound'. The main characters, Dani and K'ven are wondeful, but there is no question, it's C'hase's book.

Although considered a Korthan 'Hellhound' by humans, there is nothing demonic about C'hase. In fact, if there are demons about they are the terraforming humans.

Part of the Before the Fall series, Finding Mogha can be read as a stand alone.

Finding Mogha is another enjoyable vignette in the universe of Korthan and human conflict.
Cargo freighter owner Dani Meyers has surprisingly to her become bonded with a young sentient Moga pup C’hase being held prisoner in a human lab. After managing to rescue and escape with C’hase, she is determined to return the loyal companion to its home planet Mogha using her cargo delivery as a ruse to find the hidden world. Along the way to her destination a Korthan ship Captained by Korthan fighter K’vyn waylays her vessel demanding her return to Alliance space.
This sets up a series of events that plays out in a well written narrative evoking some humourous moments, romance, and prejudices that needed to be overcome on both sides towards their respective species. I truly enjoy reading these Before the Fall stories but feel they need to be longer in the telling as there were details not fully fleshed out which left me with many unanswered questions. Again this feels like an HFN ending and I can only guess that at some point the author intends to tie what feel like loose ends to this reader together in a much larger tome leading into the After the Fall series?
Either way I will continue to read any future entries as the world building and stories themselves are truly immersive and original.

Enroute to deliver live chickens to an outpost, Dani hopes to locate the home world of alien puppy she rescued (stole) from an Human Alliance lab. The mogha pup is telepathic and needs the guidance of its own kind. But before she can get there, her aging freighter is shot down by K’vyn, a Korthan. The Korthans, a savage, primitive people, have been at war with the Human Alliance.

After K’vyn shoots down the trespassing freighter, he discovers the woman he almost killed is his mate.

When he takes her aboard his ship, Dani discovers the Kothans are way more advanced that the Human Alliance, and her people are the evil ones, destroying alien worlds through terraforming. Time is running out to save the moghas before their home world is destroyed.

Like the first book in the series, this one is a well-paced sci-fi romance with amazing world-building, a believable romance, and utterly charming animal characters. Besides the alien dog, there’s a space rat, and a chicken named Molly.

To quote K’vyn: “A mogha is bonded to a human. The mogha is keeping a molk (space rat) as a pet. The molk has a chicken as a pet. And I seem to be bonded to a human.”

I can’t recommend this book and this series enough.

Saving C’hase . . .

Dani Meyers escaped with a hellhound Mogha pup, C’hase, from a human lab and is trying to get it back to its home planet. The pup is not a test subject … it is sentient and able to speak. But Korthan fighter K’vyn is trying to protect the planet Mogha from human destruction, and feels it is his duty to rid the galaxy of a destructive human ship, so he shoots her ship and causes it to crash.

Dani needs the help of the Korthan who forced her crash so she can warn the Mogha inhabitants about the plans she overheard to terraform the animal’s home planet. Can they join forces and save C’hase and the Mogha world? And why is there such a strong attraction between Dani and K’vyn?

This story was just adorable. I really enjoyed all the creatures described as well as the protagonists. The male/female interactions were cute, mediated by their animal companions and an AI presence. I haven’t read anything by this author prior to this story but the writing was so clear and engaging that I didn’t feel confused or uninformed at any point. This story was dual POV, well written and edited, and enough to encourage me to have a look at what else this author has written. I first read this story when it was in the Pets In Space 5 anthology and it’s nice to see it released on its own.

Another amazing job of storytelling by Hatch!!! Climb into this story of how no matter where you're from things aren't always what they seem. When humans decide that they can change any world no matter if it's already inhabited, then others will fight to give that life a chance!! Don't miss a single one of these great reads!!!

Talking Dogs and Alive Ships

Really enjoyed reading this one. It is my 2nd book by this author. I love her style of writing
.

It's full of excitement and adventure keeping you reading. Wish this book could lead to another with this pairing on their new home world. I'm sure the young mogha will be up to lots of misadventures as he grows up.

Woe the bad guys!

What a beautiful, colourful and warming story. There is a space battle, a romance, and absolutely adorable alien animals. Except for the Hellbats. They’re nasty! There’s such warmth and humour all throughout and it was such a pity to reach the end. I loved it!!!
