Good information if you are thinking about traveling to Canada. There are some beautiful pictures of some awesome places! I actually checked this book out for my son who is going to Canada for 2 years. He didn't show any interest in it.
I have a collection of DK guides, and this is the first digital version. It’s a guide that is well adapted to digital user experience (e.g. Google Maps links). Content is good but not great. I found the History chapters, or additional articles in boxes rather short.. Yet, overall well done.
I've read many of the DK Eyewitness series and what makes them unique is their use of high quality color photographs throughout the book. They also have a large amount of descriptive text to help you figure out where you want to see on your travels.
If your planning a trip across Canada, this book will come in very handy. Very detailed, lots of recommendation of what you must see, where to stay, where to eat. With a great index, need to know section, amazing pictures, street maps. So glad I purchased it. You will not regret spending the money on this fabulous book.
The Eyewitness Travel series is a nice resource. One downside: It is not as extensive in its coverage as, for instance, Frommer's. Nonetheless, it is a lushly produced volume and provides considerable useful information.
The book is organized as follows: The first part is an introduction to Canada. Then, area by area (e.g., Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, Central Canada, British Columbia and the Rockies, and Northern Canada). Then, a section on traveler's needs--where to eat, where to stay, entertainment, shopping, and attractions. Finally, a survival guide.
Overall, a useful resource, although not quite as informative of a publication like Frommer's.
I love Eyewitness and DK books, but I have to say that this book was sub-par. I'm doing research on Canada and the far north for an upcoming trip that I'm going to take with my father. This book was rather pathetic. It devoted several pages to the major cities, but didn't really say very much about anything else. All of the recommendations were mainstream. I wasn't very impressed with this book and would hope that any foreign tourist would pick a better guidebook.
I was born and raised in Canada, and was amazed at the content in this book. Beautiful photos and fantastic descriptions of everything Canadian, from Maple trees to Maple Syrup. I was surprised to find this book even shared accommodations and tourist ideas, and it is up to date. A must read for any one coming for a visit, or if you just love travel and a great travel book.
Admittedly, I didn't read this book cover to cover, I concentrated on the "Canadian Rockies" section but I thought overall the book was well organized, well written, well researched and had nice pictures. Would recommend for anyone traveling to Canada. It's focused on the whole country so there will only be a few pages dedicated to the city/area you are visiting, but still worth the read!
DK Eyewitness Travel Guides are THE best travel guides! Perfect, portable size, beautiful picts, and awesome info. THIS is the ultimate travel guide for this area.
