Could love be the most alluring game of all? Harriet Truchard’s parents are the black sheep of the Ton. Exiled for her father's notorious duels and cheating, they are back in London, and they have plans for their brilliant daughter. She can either use her talent with cards to win them a fortune, or she can marry a man of their choosing. Which is out of the question since their choice is nothing but a well-dressed thug. But when an encounter leads her into Viscount Beaufort’s path, she sees a chance to escape her family’s schemes, if she’s willing to risk it all.
Left with a crippling debt by his late father, Leo Astley, Lord Beaufort opened London’s most elegant gambling house in a desperate effort to keep a roof over their heads. He’s willing to flirt with scandal to save his family, but after a run of strange losses leaves the bank stripped of funds and threatens everything, he needs expert help, and fast.
The last person he should trust is the daughter of England’s most notorious swindlers but Harriet knows every trick in the book and is eager to help. As they play their cards to hunt down the cheats threatening all he holds dear and try to avoid the repercussions of Harriet’s past, Leo and Harriet start to learn that admitting to the spark between them might be the biggest risk of all. Because what’s at stake are their hearts….
Left alone in the library at an early age, Robyn Chalmers discovered that reading could pass the time until her parents remembered where they had left her. Now she escapes into her own books until somebody pulls her out of her office and feeds her coffee and cake.
The fifth book in the Spirited Spinsters Sweet Regency Romance series. Harriet Truchard and Leo Astley, Lord Beaufort's story. has drama, suspense, twists, turns, villains and romance. The story is well written and held my interest. This has been a very good series. I received a copy of this book via Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What a breath of fresh air this series is! I couldn't stop reading until I finished them all (hence the one review). I love that every story is unique and memorable and that the FMCs are no simpering misses but real people with real problems, which makes that happily ever after so much more satisfying. There's also lots of fun and witty banter to be had throughout to lighten the load of those real problems they're contending with, which is perfect 👌🏼
I look forward to reading whatever else Robyn Chalmers comes up with, as she has definitely earned her place among my favourite regency authors 🌟
This was a delightful story with a really interesting take around the world of cards and gambling and probability. I loved Harriet and Beau and their clever schemes. A great read and I'll definitely be reading more from this author.
Enjoyable historical romance. I liked that she was an established author, and that she was initially the one coming to his rescue. Nice play on tropes typically found in this sort of novel.
