The Icarians and the shape shifting Shadows of Firixina are two vastly different peoples sharing a single planet, each species raising their children to call the others monsters. But their queens have always broken their familial rules.
Shadows can slip between dimensions, and Ixi spent her childhood waiting for Shallon’s next visit. They were friends brought together by curiosity turned to lovers torn apart when one’s mother murdered the other’s.
Years have passed since a single act of violence separated them, and now that Ixi sits on the Icarian throne, a Shadow stalks her… watching and waiting. But she wears the scars that were required to earn her throne, and she knows that Shadows aren’t the nightmares her forebears claimed.
When the Shadow allows her to plunge her chambers beneath the sea—trapping them together—Ixi discovers that the lover she lost returned to her. But for how long?
The Two Queens of Firixina is a sapphic monster romance. Please check CW/TWs
Dalia Davies fell into monster romance--almost by accident--and loves it here. She drinks her weight in tea every day and has been told on numerous occasions that she “knows too much”. She pairs old gods, monsters, and aliens with human women who get exactly what they want and maybe a little more than they came for. Brought up on fairytales read while hiding in the back stacks of her small-town library and sneaking in creature features at friends' homes, she always wanted a way to meld two fantasies into one. When not writing, she plays the banjo poorly, dreams of traveling the world, and avoids large crowds and loud noises. Living in the southwestern US, she lets the outside heat permeate her stories and hopes they leave you panting.
This is, of course, a pen name. It is one of many I write under. You can find my other works as: Andi Simms - Contemporary Romance Ava Lunaria - Paranormal Romance
This second chance romance novella was dark but sweet. Ixi and Shallon were both willing to kill when necessary and picked up pretty quickly from where they left off. Both had experienced trauma that changed them, but were able to accept each other just the way they were. The heart strings aspect was interesting, where Ixi’s species essentially had a song instead of a regular heartbeat could literally die from a broken heart and The ending was a little abrupt, but did wrap up the main plot points.
Spice: 2/5
Triggers: murder, violence, gore, mention of patricide and matricide, mention of child abuse
Two queens from rival parts of their world were once friends then lovers to nothing? Pitted against each other as brutal enemies, they go many years apart. They are finally brought back together ;) and the results are well written, spicy and sweet. If monster romance is for you then definitely give this quick novella a read!!
The Two Queens of Firixina by Dalia Davies This was a fun sapphic monster romance! I was feeling in the mood for something short and sweet and this fit the bill! I think the novella format is really a perfect place for a second chance romance, and this executed that well!
They are two very different forms of monsters which was incredibly fun!
I would have appreciated just a little more details about the two main characters. There were some really interesting aspects to their species’ that I feel like I didn’t quite get a full picture of that I would have loved to!
This book was so sweeeeeeet! My heartstrings broke for scared, fierce and loving Ixi and curious, gentle and lovesick Shallon. They were soulmates through ans through. The author was successfully able to makes us feel how much they love and respect each other in so little pages. I love that Ixi decided to forge her own path in blood to get to her Shallon.
May Shallon hearts beat forever, may Ixi heartstrings happily sing endlessly.
Good sapphic alien romance. Quick read at approximately 50 or so pgs. Bit of a second chance + Romeo and Juliette but with an HEA between these two alien women whose species are enemies. But the royal daughters fall in love and decide to broker a peace once each becomes queen. Very inspired world building. One MC has tentacles so you can’t go wrong there and the other is a prodigy with a blade. Definitely worth a read.
It took me awhile to sink into the environment, the planet and the body mechanics of the two mains. By the time I had everything placed in my mind, the story was over. Ixi’s ruthlessness on display was a small treat. I do wish this story was longer, w/o the meat of it happening in past tense.
Meh. It’s fast paced with an abrupt ending. It kinda felt like I was dropped off in the third act of a story. I think this would have been better if it was 50 pages longer to build out the story more.
✨ Synopsis: In an alien world inhabited by two warring kingdoms, two queens were raised to hate each other. But they fell in love instead.
✨ Review: One of my favorite things about alien romance is that sense of “otherness,” and Dalia Davies has done an excellent job with this one.
Ixi, the Icarian queen, has blue skin and razor-sharp fangs. Shallon, the Shadow queen, can shape-shift into any form and must form lips in order to kiss. Because of this, the steamy moments are some of the most fascinating spicy scenes I have ever read.
I also really loved the sense of history between the two and how it was interwoven throughout the narrative deepening their connection.
