My reviews may contain spoilers.

Listen, I love a good stalker story - it's been my go-to for the last half of 2023, but I'm starting to realize that this plot has to be done very carefully to sell it. This one didn't sell it.

I was so excited when this popped up on a New Release page and seemed right up my alley. Stalker; Mafia; Dark Romance...

That's the trifecta of what I've enjoyed this year. Sign me up! And I was enjoying it enough through the first half, besides some plot holes and an unnecessary time jump. For an example of one glaring plot hole: he has the office rearrange her schedule to put her in his class that semester because he can't wait for next semester to have her sitting in front of him. Then that never happens, a time jump occurs rapidly and it's the next semester and she's signed up for his class because it lines up with her goals of wanting to go to Italy.

If only that was the singular problem with this book...

I could get over the minor irritation of one plot point not lining up. Then the grammar errors began. I often ignore the first few - especially when it's things like "this" switched to "his" and it's obviously not easily caught by spell check - I'm more forgiving for those scenarios. Typos happen - and even with editing, they can slip through. The thing is, this didn't appear to have any sort of editor, since so many slipped through.

Call me crazy, but I consider grammar important if you want to be an author. It's not a suggestion. So I typically take half a star off for repetitive typos and a star off for numerous mistakes. But still I powered through, because the story interested me enough to continue, even if it didn't call out to me to keep reading during my free time. No big deal there - that happens and could be my own stress level at any given point, so I don't usually fault the book for me being able to put it down and not being desperate to pick it up again.

Then things began to kick into gear and the confrontation in his office happened. *Claps hands together* Okay, now we're getting to the good stuff. Especially when she sees him with a colleague and reads the room very wrong. Great! Minor misunderstanding, tension is building - no complaints from me! And then the tension snapped and I felt like I was the one snapped with a rubber band.

It became a completely different book! After that moment of anticipation, it was SO rushed. Suddenly he's her savior, then they're lovers, then he's kidnapping her and they're running away from his enemies...all in the same night.

Couldn't have used that semester - that was completely glossed over - to build any of this tension that boiled over in one night?

By the next night she's shrugging when he asks her to have his babies and "purring" her answers at him. We're supposed to believe this was the drugs he gave her that knocked her out. Now, I'm not an expert on every drug out there, but I don't think there's one currently on the market that can knock a person out and then make them wake up horny and agreeing to have kids with a man and ask for a sponge bath and then beg for anal sex and wake up with no memory the next day.

It's a romance book, it's fantasy, I get that. Just as I also get that I've read more believable scenarios in paranormal books with fairies and dystopian apocalypses.

Believability exists within the world the author creates for the reader. This one fell apart in that moment.

And I was actually liking the book (for the most part) until it went off the rails about halfway through.

My only hang-up until that point was the heroine. Yeah, the hero went completely over the top at first sight, which okay, stalker, works for me in this scenario (part of that 'world believability' I try to get absorbed in), but she was so blasé about it, I wondered how she had the brain power to get into college. Oh, someone is breaking into a locked up apartment and bypassing cameras every single night and leaving flowers? That's cute. Someone is stealing panties and leaving them in the laundry all crusty? Okay, no reason to call the cops because everyone know that stalkers escalate when you call the cops. Even though there are constant warnings about a serial kidnapper on campus taking girls with her description!!!

She avoids her manwhore of a neighbor, but gets off on him having sex with other women - even though he doesn't have sex with other women, he makes her think he does and never corrects that viewpoint. That really irritated me - on both of their parts. She also pleasures herself to that and then either cries or vomits - I never did figure out what that was about, but maybe it was mentioned at the end of the book and (as you will soon see), I didn't quite get there.

She dreams of her sister telling her "Uncle is a bad man" and then races to said uncle when he emails her that someone she hates is missing. Call me heartless, but...umm...so? Let her remain missing. She's labeled as "The Bitch" in your phone, assaulted you, terrorizes you, and was a horrible human being. Not worth answering an email about that scenario, much less having the American Embassy help you get back in the country to find out what's what. She earned the label of TSTL at this point and I washed my hands of her. I wanted to DNF at this point, but I took a deep breath and hoped it would improve.

Spoiler alert:

It was just too much for a 200 page book. Especially when the first 100 pages didn't have a lot happening (although I was okay with that, because I thought it was building to something good). We have a stalker, mystery deaths in the heroine's past, a serial killer/kidnapper on campus, crazy family members, a mafia family who is still involved even though they've disowned the hero, incest, graphic on page rape, crazy trauma response to the previous scenario, America to Italy to America to Italy - and we're barely 160 pages in.

These characters made no sense in their actions and reactions and by the time we reached the mafia portion of the story, I had to DNF. It might've earned two stars if it had held me to the end, but I could not take one more hurdle with a brand new plot element. Even taking 10 minutes to skim the last 50 pages was not worth my time.

Unrealistic + Disappointing

The first chapter had me hooked, and then it all went downhill from there. I love a good dark romance but there were too many tropes going on.

Age Gap
Forbidden Romance
Student x Teacher
Mafia Romance
Stalker Romance

We didn’t get a feel for the relationship or any character development. We didn’t really even get an introduction to who the characters were at all. I couldn’t connect with either of them and had a hard time following what was going on because it seemed sporadic.

This book had potential but it fell short for me

needs more work

It was better than the 1st revision but still needs work. Since I can see some improvements

Pros
The new title has a great name
Silas obsession very detailed and great

Cons
Eden wants him from the beginning and constantly talks about it and is always blushing in his presence and talking about how hot he is. This does not make sense or work with her always fighting him. She can mention he is hot once but to constantly talk about him and get off on him made it unbelievable.

I read the whole book and the only chapters I liked were chapters 11-17. The only part she fights and resists the rest of the book she wants him and is constantly thinking of him.

There are many holes or problems with the story for example first in the story it explains that Silas manipulated her schedule to get her enrolled in his class. But then she says that she enrolled herself in the class because it was a requirement which is the most unbelievable a chemistry major would never have a language class as a college requirement. and yet another time she says she enrolled because she wants to speak Italian for a internship. Make up your mind which one is it and my vote would be Silas thing but needs to add more like she finds out she is randomly in the class but Silas somehow blocks her from enrolling in any other class to get out of it with the hacker.

Another example is how the whole book she hates her mom and distrusts her uncles but then suddenly she sees a email from said uncle about her mom and she runs to her uncle she distrusts to help a women she hates nope does not work. This twist majorly did not work if she liked her mom sure if her uncle threatens her mom and she liked her mom and went to save her sure but this twist makes no sense and ruined the rest of the book because supposedly we are supposed to believe she runs to distrustful uncle and now oh no uncle is bad so when Silas comes back she now loves him because he rescues her. She would not have needed rescued if she was not dumb enough to run to the uncle she distrusts so the story fell apart with her dumb move and became even more unbelievable.

These are just 2 of the many plot problems that did not work.

Exactly what it promised to be

4 fantastic stars
⭐⭐⭐⭐

10/10 do recommend to those who are dark, pitch black fans. This is not a light and fluffy read.

Based on the author's note at the beginning of the book, this book delivered exactly what it was supposed to deliver.

I rated it a 4 because there were some details that were really murky and some discrepancies that took me out of the story.

read this in an hour...it had such potential.

ik it is a novella but i wish it was longer, the story & characters needed further development
it's like it was a really good stalker rom that turned into a wattpad hookup that turned into a professor/student kink that turned into murder that turned into rape that turned into mafia that turned into marriage

basically there was no connection between the events...the sex was poorly written. BUT the worst part is that the content of the other writing was squeal worthy...i'm livid that this wasn't given 500 pages to fulfil it's potential and fully explore the plot points like it should have.

if anyone reads this ignore the grammar i cba and this is only so i remember my initial thoughts for journaling.

.5 star.

Terrible writing. The grammatical error. It’s just pure trash. Everything is rushed it doesn’t make since and they throw in shit out of no where like how the uncle is a rapist and the serial killer. Like not even mentioning how she looks like the other victims.

I usually live dark romances like this but from the first page where the FMC was hating herself for her self-care I was confused. There is nothing wrong with that. But the author just wanted the FMC to hate herself and picked that. This book read like it was written by a man.

I’m giving this a 3 because it was almost what I needed it to be. The idea is great but the execution needs some work. A few plot holes don’t bother me, I’m just here to be entertained. However, it felt very rushed. Large time jumps, things happening with little explanation, and a lot of grammatical errors.
But the spice was spicin and it was a quick fun read so I’d definitely give the author another chance.

You can read my review of Stalked to the Altar on my blog, here: https://thepaperworlds.blogspot.com/2....

This is a spoiler-free review! Content warnings include graphic depictions of violence, sexual assault, childhood sexual assault, kidnapping, nonconsensual drug use, and murder.

The hate side of my love-hate relationship with my Stuff Your Kindle Day selection has come out in full force with this book. I truly do not even know where to begin - there was a lot of potential with the premise, and as a lover of dark and taboo romance, I was intrigued to see how this would play out in conjunction with the mafia aspect. Unfortunately, the plot is incredibly rushed and crammed into essentially less than two hundred pages that are full of assault. There was never a clear explanation until the very end of what the mafia component was in this book, and the book leaves you unsatisfied.

Eden is straight up being stalked by one of her professors, Silas, and yet she appears to be completed unfazed by his crazy self running around campus and watching her most intimate moments. Both Eden and Silas have the most insane personalities that constantly are doing 180 degree flips as if they are Olympic hopefuls. Every page felt like I was getting jostled around in an airplane - I could not tell if Eden hated Silas or loved him. It was obviously clear that he loved her, but the things he did to her were actually atrocious and well beyond what a dark romance typically includes. And this is coming from a fan of The Ritual by Shantel Tessier - I have seen it all and so much more.

We learn approximately three pieces of information about Eden and maybe two about Silas - their development is completely abandoned in favor of voyeuristic activities and a number of drugging and kidnappings over the course of what feels like twenty-four hours. She is basically ripped from the life that she knows - even though it does not seem like she is having a good time - and thrown into this random mafia situation that never truly gets explained by Silas. The author needed to dedicate more time to fleshing out her characters and provide supporting plot in order to make the story cohesive, instead it reads as a continuous thought that was thrown onto paper without an editor or revision.

It is rare that I do not have a positive to relay about a book, but there is not a single good thing that can come to mind. The "spicy" scenes all had this sinister aura surrounding them, and the multiple sexual assaults were not handled with care at all - the repercussions are abandoned and horrible actions are somehow rewarded. As an avid dark romance reader, I cannot get behind this book as falling into the genre.

You can catch up with me and my current reads by friending me on Goodreads (maddymartinelli), Instagram (@thepaperworlds), Twitter (@thepaperworlds), and following this blog in order to stay up-to-date with any reviews, blog tours, and more!

TW: I feel like the authors trigger warning in the actual book as well as her website was not clear enough. The book mentions abuse and assault. The website says rape, and “abuse by and of a family member”, and “allusions to minor sexual assault”. I would like to put this clarification out there…. There is non explicit child sexual assault by a family member (incest/rape) in here but there is also explicit adult rape/sexual assault by a family member in here as well. Incest is a major TW for some readers and it should specifically spell that out. Just labeling it as “abuse” can be very misleading as there are different forms of abuse. I know the author also put rape… but again it was not specific enough regarding the incest considering the tactics the MMC uses on FMC. The way the author has these TW written is kind of “read between the lines” and that can lead readers into possible triggering scenarios if they don’t catch on.

Now that I got that disclaimer out of the way - Had potential but fell a bit flat. Too many tropes/plots where it felt like some were left open ended (like Silas’s enemies) while others felt anticlimactic (prison is a lame punishment considering, and again, wtf happened with that?!)

Had quite a few minor typos. Not enough to make me disengaged but definitely enough to be a distraction to some readers.

There were some things Silas did that was just kinda ick for me and it made it feel unbelievable that Eden would get so dickmatized to just be like ‘mkayyyyyy’. (Minor spoiler: Silas pretending to be sleeping with different woman literally every night when in reality he’s just listening to porn obnoxiously loud so Eden hears it and thinks he has a revolving door of woman… just for her boink him without protection and have no concerns with STD/STI’s and never having the discussion about his manwhoring ways… like ewy)

Overall however, I did enjoy both the FMC and MMC. Insta lust/love. And I appreciated the dedication Silas has when he decided Eden was his.

Eden Williams, her home life is dreadful, and all she wants is her freedom. And Eden knows that her one escape is going to college. it's the perfect escape. Honestly, the idea of getting out and going to college actually gives her more hope than ever. That is until the day her neighbor comes crashing into her life and turns it upside down.

On the run from his family, Silas Caputo decides he is better off hiding as an Italian professor at an American college hes worked at for a while. Never in his life has Silas wanted for anything, but now that he's met Eden, he'd ruin his career happily just to have her.

Silas isn't a hero... even though Eden is in need of one.

In Eden's shadows, Silas is the monster, just waiting, watching her from every corner.

Silas is the darkness that stalks Eden's every move, just waiting for his turn.

Is Eden going to fall for Silas's charms? Will she find out Silas is the one she should run from?

I have been reading the Petrov Legacy Series by Selena Michaels, and other than the first book, I have really been enjoying it. And Stalked to The Alter is the first book in Selena's new series, the Caputo Crime Family. I am going to start off by saying that I have some mixed feelings about this book.

For the most part, I enjoyed this book. Silas is a hoot. Eden is mind-boggling in trying to avoid her family and her strange uncle without a first, second, or even third thought. And she does this for about 85% of the book.

Reality is, though, once again, there was some massive missed grammar and syntax that should have been caught. Hopefully, the 2nd book, which focuses on Silas's brother Sebastian, will be improved on that issue. I will say that Sebastian is younger and more intense than Silas is, so I can't wait to read that story. I loved the action in this book, and the question of Silas being on time or not is one I will leave you with to find out on your own.

This was a disappointing read. The pacing was chaotic, the story rushed, and the characters underdeveloped. There’s no time to connect with them and no tension or longing to make you root for the relationship to blossom.

The first part of the book sets up one story, then abruptly shifts into three separate plotlines that were barely established. It feels disjointed, like the pieces don’t belong to the same book.

And the so-called “epilogue”? Not an epilogue at all, it is just a preview of the next book. After an entire story where he keeps obsessing over breeding her and producing kids, there’s zero follow through on that. No glimpse of their future, no mention of the kids, nothing. It’s a huge missed opportunity made the ending feel incomplete to me.

I can overlook a few typos or grammar issues, but this has been out for nearly two years without updates to fix the numerous mistakes.

It had so much potential, but for me, it completely missed the mark. I will not be continuing the series and not reading anything else by this author.

Also, this book contains some heavy triggers. While there’s a trigger warning page at the start, major ones are left out. If the goal is to avoid spoilers, fine, but if you’re going to omit very big, very heavy triggers, why include a list at all?

⚠️ Warning: my book information, shelves, and tags can be spoiler-y.

Stalked to the Altar by Selena Michaels is the second book I have read by this author. This story appears to be the first in a series involving the Caputo Crime Family. Silas, the eldest son, has been exiled to the US due to his involvement with a less than honorable organization. One of the innocent members of his family was harmed and he was blamed. For Silas, exile is not a bad situation: he has more money than he can spend, works as an Italian language professor, and enjoys many romantic liaisons! His new neighbor is a student, Eden Williams, and should be off-limits. Eden has cut ties with her controlling and strange family. She has resolved to keep her head down and make her late father and sister proud. However, she did not count on coming under her intense professor’s scrutiny. For Silas, seeing Eden is life-changing; he is instantly in love, and she becomes his new obsession, and he will do ANYTHING to make her is wife. For most of the book, Eden is cautious; she avoids her mother and weird uncle AND most of her classmates. She is leery of Silas, but he does not take “no” for an answer! I really enjoyed most of this story; OTT Silas was a hoot. The part that was mind boggling was Eden spending time and energy to avoid her family for 85% of the story and then just going off with her strange uncle without a first, second or third thought. Will Silas be on time? I gave it four stars because even with Eden making that dangerous misstep, I enjoyed the action and Silas was funny. The next story is about Sebastian, Silas’ younger and even more intense brother. Whewwwwww!

I loved the premise of this book… I just wish it had been done differently. No spoilers, I swear!

The plot - this is a dark italian mafia romance, with forced proximity, stalker vibes, student X teacher, forbidden romance… those are most of the tropes. It’s pretty much stalking and Stockholm Syndrome in a book. It is dark so CHECK YA FUCKIN TRIGGERS PEOPLE. There are a ton of content warnings at the start, but honestly the romance plotline (whilst only being a minor part of the story according to the author) seemed to dominate the storyline entirely. And with that comes this criticism: it was creepy. Not in a “thats lowkey hot” kind of way, but in a “oh dear… that couldn’t be further from plausible if you tried.” And that ruined it for me. There wasn’t a lot of wooing involved, despite repeated reassurance from the MMC that he was wooing her, and it seemed to do a 180 every page turned. Loved the premise, but the execution wasn’t for me.

The MC - This is Eden, our FMC who has a troubled past, and is trying to escape it by going to school. She’s doing great, but she’s immature and unprepared, and apparently unable to avoid the guy who gives her the creeps but also makes her “womb twitch” (verbatim quote there) … should’ve taken her out with a sniper on page 3 tbh.

The male counterpart - Silas is a dick. Not in a good way, he’s creepy and weird and his claims of being obsessed with our girl Eden despite knowing nothing about her and having seen her once are baseless and far fetched. This is a true crime story disguised as a dark romance novel and I’m not a fan of him at all.

“St4lked to the Altar” is my first Selena Michaels book, and I’m so glad that I chose the one that had all the tropes I love: professor/student, age gap, OTT/JP, st4lking, k¡dn4pping, and there’s so much more. But to top it all off, the MMC is the son of a Don who has been excommunicated from the organization, so things get rather extr3me and v¡olent on his end. It seems like a lot jammed into only 194 pages, but it works.

Readers must be prepared to be hit hard and fast with “St4lked to the Altar,” much like the FMC and Eden. See what I did there? Don’t question why Silas is suddenly in insta-lust and 0bsessed with Eden––it doesn’t matter. He just is. Don’t question the logistics of their first time together. Don’t worry about it. It’s hot.

” St4lked to the Altar” contains some heavy and graphically detailed themes, hence the TW/CWs. But aside, every shmexy scene Author Selena Michaels wrote was outrageously steamy. Do you want to read about a d0minant alpha male who’s OTT/JP, has mafia ties, and will do anything and everything to get the woman he loves, who happens to be his student? Do you want almost every shminky shmink packed in the story, including br33ding, pr4¡se, sp4nk¡ñg, añ4l, s0mñ0, and more? Then, “St4lked to the Altar” is the book you’ll want to read.

Stalked to the Altar is book one of the Caputa Crime Family Series.

I really liked the build up to their whole relationship. Eden knows something is going on in her life. She knows someone is $t@lking her but she just doesn't know who. She sees her neighbour/professor everywhere she goes. Silas knows instantly when he sees her that she is the one for him. He plays a lot of mind games with her, but he wants to build a rapport with her so she can accept him in her life more easily. They had an intense build up getting to where the crescendo occurs and we get some nice spicy moments.

There are some themes in the story which do feel a little rushed, but overall I enjoyed the story and needed to get to the end. There is a lot of suspense near the last bit of the book as a lot of secrets get unveiled and we get the answers to some of the questions we have had throughout the book.

Off putting situations

To escape her family, Eden left for college. As fate would have it, Eden would meet a stranger who would become enamored with her. Silas had been excommunicated by his family for a mistake he had made. Now he spends his time as a professor and appears to be a ladies’ man. One day when Silas and Eden cross paths, he becomes obsessed with her. But there is someone else who wants Eden, too.

This story is filled with so many events. The author explains what happened in some situations that initially appear off-putting. In general, I don't think this story deserves more than two stars. Both the plot and the characters were underdeveloped. There were too many grammatical errors and a lack of structure in this story, in my opinion.

I love this book so much! Silas... omg I never thought I'd find a guy called Silas so hot, but he's all the hot mafia guy things I love, with the added plus that he's hiding his true identity when he meets Eden.

He's just her annoying neighbour, right? Oh he's so much more. She's looking for a new life away from her family, but what she gets is a new life she could never have imagined.

Honestly I could rave for pages about this book, and the writer, but just take my word for it. It's awesome, and you need to read it. If you love dark romance, stalkers, mafia guys, I mean, this book has it all!

Unique Read

This whole story start to finish was woven quite well. Although quite a simple writing and easy read, characters are complex yet the interwoven pasts and happenings so elegantly crafted. Put the pieces together in a way that once revealed clicks like should’ve been obvious yet wasn’t until it was time which is brilliant as kept interest and intrigued. Siren song through and through. Quite a bit of errors, typos etc, which causes pause and would normally personally decrease the star rating but bc of the way the story is written, stringing me along the whole way it’s still a five star read to me. Finished in under 24hrs. Thank you.

First page of this book had me in an immediate chokehold. It was out of the gate spicy. This is the first book I’ve read by Selena Michaels and I’m absolutely going to be reading more from her. I devoured this book in one sitting and I was not disappointed. I will say that if you’re one to base your book ratings on the reality of the story this book is not for you. Do I feel that it’s possible to be stalked by someone and enjoy it? No. Do I feel like I needed her to not be ok with the aggressiveness of the stalker, also no. For the storyline this scenario worked. It was very much giving Stockholm syndrome and I was actually rooting for the stalker to win her over. Call me crazy but I was intrigued. I do wish the book was longer so that some of the story line was more drawn out as it did feel a little rushed but I’m anxious to see what happens in the next segment of this story.

Dark, Stalker Mafia Read

This is the first time reading this author’s books. I enjoyed the premise of the book, loved that the author did not shy away from the darkness and has me on edge wanting to read Sebastian’s story. I fell hard for Silas, he’s the perfect damaged bad boy. He’s a dark prince who will do anything to get his queen. Love that!

I struggled with some of the pacing of the story, I didn’t love Eden, I liked many aspects of her, but didn’t love her and some minor issues with the plot, syntax etc kept pulling me out of the story. That being said, I am going to read more from this author because I did thoroughly enjoy the story and want more.

I enjoyed the plot, it captivated me. The reason I gave this such a low score is because it is poorly written. I felt like the book could have used more detail, better transitions, thought out dialog, and better spelling. The author writes the spice pretty well though, which is a big deal. I felt like Eden fell for Silas too quickly and I wanted more background on both. More set up, more creep factor, and I think it would have been interesting to add some POV of the stalker throughout. This book just left me wanting more, but in all the wrong ways.

Wow. Luckily, I do not hold issue with any triggers. But you should really take count of the trigger warnings before reading this. I love the fast pace. The love story is cute then creepy then cute again. The unpacking of her past … WOW!! Definitely DEFINITELY check your triggers!! But this book had me laughing, it had me shocked, the spice was SPICING!!! I might not rate stars like other people do, but I’m still giving this a 5 star, I laughed, I giggles, my downstairs was tingling. It was a really good book.

Eden Johnson lost her dad and sister, and she moved away from her cold hearted mother , and sleaze uncle. The dysfunctional relationship between her family members. But she in a university with new goals, new apartment she meets Silas Caputo her neighbor as well as her professor.. The thing about Professor Silas Caputo , he banished from his mafia family in Italy We he meets Eden the young student, Silas will make her his wife, and get her pregnant that his goals for Eden. I enjoyed both characters soon to be more.

This was one interesting book. But i think i read my first happy for now book of 2025, because that epilogue (which focused on the character of the next book) wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, and i’m not sure how i feel about it.

Mafia romance, stalker and student x professor, this was hitting all my favourite tropes!

There were quite a few plot holes. Like for all his stalking didn’t MMc notice that someone else was stalking our FMC? Also, after that tension snapped it was as if the author decided it was not worth writing well. Like everything was rushed and didn’t make sense. I still finished it, and had fun, but honestly it was probably because of the first half of the book as that was great!

Also, would have been great if an editor/proofreader saw it. It’s not nice having that many grammar and syntax errors.
