Be prepared for an urban fantasy with werewolves, vampires, leprechauns, and a government agency that uses wizards, vampires, dragons to safeward the USA and the world from demons from the underworld.
Set in the current time, we have a pack of werewolves led by a female lesbian leader, Sam Silverthorn. Their pack is suffering from the economic situation, and they cannot reach the end of the month only selling their beverage called moonshine. They would love to go legal, but that would imply tons of more money they don't have.
Sam has got more issues to deal with; Her (human) lover is about to die of cancer, and the only way to save her is by converting her into a werewolf, something that has not been done in years. Other members from your pack want to remove you from power and start trafficking drugs to earn more money.
A very interesting, fun, quick-to-read and well-written urban fantasy book. The author goes to the point on every episode so you will find a vivid read, including fights between werewolfs and vampires. If you are into this kind of plot, go for it right now; you won't be disappointed.
Sam is a 50-year-old werewolf and the leader of her pack. She was cast out long ago by her father but returned on his deathbed. But being the leader of her pack is only one of her maybe struggles, her partner Maggie is sick and dying from cancer but she soon learns that changing her into a werewolf will cure her of the disease. Her mother shares the pack's journals that reveal what happens when you get bitten, it has been many moons since a human was changed and Sam wants to make sure she knows what to expect.
Her brothers Randy and Junior are up to no good causing trouble for the pack, as Junior early wants to take over.
Then there's Eliana, who personally was my favorite. Sweet, innocent and young but also the child of Lilith and the devil, this ends the book with its biggest twist.
My favorite quote from the book, which has so much truth behind it, is... "Eliana," she began gently. "Sometimes life places burdens on our shoulders that we didn't ask for. We don't get to choose our parents or the circumstances we are born into. But remember, while some things are not in our control, how we react to them and the choices we make are up to us."
“Midlife Mountain Moonshine” by Renee Brume is set in the backwoods of the Appalachian Mountains. It tells the tale of the Silverthorn family who are pillars in their community, but they have an unfortunate secret, they all turn into werewolves at the full moon. Sam Silverthorn is back as leader of her pack after being banished for not following her father’s wishes, and because she is gay. Sam is not as young as she used to be and is at odds with her brothers who run an illegal moonshine business to keep the pack going, financially. One of them also wants to challenge Sam to be the alpha-wolf of the pack. I enjoyed the story of the aging matriarch, with a heart of gold, her dying partner and family/pack issues that create lots of drama and excitement. The author did a great job with pacing the story and didn’t shy away from the violence you would expect from brawling werewolves. There are many other mythical creatures in them thar woods, such as vampires, demons and even a comical leprechaun. This tale takes us outside the werewolf box! I am looking forward to book 2 in the series.
“Midlife Mountain Moonshine” by Renee Brume, is an engaging paranormal werewolf tale featuring a 50-year-old protagonist; it is the first in a series, so it is not a complete story line, but neither does it end on a cliffhanger. Sam Silverthorn is gay and the leader of her pack. Sam makes several references to her advanced age and the accompanying aches and pains she feels. (I feel the need to point out that, in this day and age, 50 is young!) In addition to werewolves, this story includes demons, vampires, and dragons, and more. Sam has brothers and a twin sister in the pack, and they reside in West Virginia. The pack produces and sells moonshine as a way of making a living, but financially, they are not doing well. She has a significant other, Maggie, who is dying of cancer. It seems a bit of a stretch to me that it must be suggested to Sam that she could save Maggie’s life by turning her into a werewolf, and that she never considered this possibility on her own. One other point struck me as weird: there was a second option of asking one of Sam’s vampire friends to turn Maggie into a vampire. When that possibility is suggested to Sam by a vampire friend, she says, “No thanks,” because she cannot imagine being married to a vampire. So, it seems she would rather Maggie died of cancer than became a vampire. Overall, I enjoyed the story and liked the characters. I found the writing to be clear, capable and effective. One recurring issue I noted was that, although the story is told in first person past tense, there were periodic slips into present tense. Renee Brume’s “Midlife Mountain Moonshine” is a fascinating addition to the female fictional paranormal genre featuring new view of things from the point of a fifty years old Sam Silverthorn, one of its most important characters. As the alpha in her werewolf pack, Sam handles issues such as leadership dynamics, family problems and emotional challenges arising from Maggie’s sickness. This story is unique among others for blending comedy, determination and touching incidents where Sam faces aging, struggles for authority among her pack members and tough choices to protect those she values.
The book takes on an Appalachian spirit with moonshining and werewolf fighting that creates an atmosphere. Blending supernatural features with everyday stressors of middle life is not an easy job but Brume does it so well making this story about more than just another werewolf tale.
Although some of the plot twists may appear foreseeable, readers are kept glued on by solid character development as well as interesting surprises particularly concerning Eliana whom we know very little about. The author shares wisdom in a humorous way throughout her novel; therefore it does not follow these clichés leading to re-freshness within the category thereby making it fun reading materials for individuals who like supernatural tales.
Generally speaking, the “Midlife Mountain Moonshine” is an encouraging debut to Midlife Mountain Friends and Enemies series which has created a desire among readers for what comes next.
This book starts out well, introducing a family of moonshine selling werewolves. I felt compassion for the POV character, Sam, who is gay and has suffered discrimination and who’s partner seems to be dying. The then moves on to the first crises, interweaving both pack and town politics into the possibility for some good news. This kept me very interested and wanting to turn the pages. The author then introduced other creatures, including a vampire and what’s called a named demon. I immediately wondered where they’d play into the story. The author does an amazing job of carrying several storylines at once, though staying in the same POV. I felt like I was immersed in the current scene while thinking of what must be going on in other areas of Sam’s life. I was over hallway through the book when the POV switched to Junior, Sam’s conniving little brother. I was very intrigued by this. The POV shift was brief and did not disappoint. The final stretch of the book was exciting and interesting. I was definitely left wanting more. Overall, this book was kind along the lines of a Charlaine Harris or Stephanie Meyer book. But I liked this book better than the books by those two authors. It seemed more intelligently written and I highly recommend it.
Midlife Mountain Moonshine is a gripping page turner. Sam Silverthorn is a werewolf and the leader of her pack. This entails making sure the bills are paid, the pack is safe and happy and their moonshine business is running smoothly. Or as smoothly as an illegal operation can run. But Sam has so much on her plate. Her girlfriend, Maggie, is dying and she is heartbroken at the thought, and the only thing that might possibly save Maggie’s life comes with certain risks. Her elder brother, Junior, resents her because he wants to be pack leader, and he has plans afoot to not only make some money but to take Sam out of the picture, permanently. Throw in a deal with a leprechaun and a little girl whose life is in danger and poor Sam doesn’t know whether she’s coming or going. I loved this. I loved the werewolf dynamics of the pack/family and the threat they were under kept me turning the pages. And the story continues with book 2 in the series which I plan on reading very soon. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.
“Midlife Mountain Moonshine” by Renee Brume is a great start to a shapeshifter romance series. Right away, I connected with the main character, Sam, because of the conflict that was introduced, which is essentially a “dying lover” plot for a character in a low socioeconomic status, looking desperately for ways to prevent the lover from passing of cancer. I may sound like a broken record, because this gets said often, but I always appreciate fantasy/sci-fi/paranormal stories where the main characters are older than the typical 18-24 range (the rest of us can still go on adventures, too!) So if you’re one of those readers, Sam is a 50ish year old protagonist (as the series name suggests) and Renee did an excellent job capturing the mindset/worries of someone in that age range as their conflict unfolds.
If you want a quick, easy paranormal romance read that makes you feel all the feels and gets you lost in the story, this is a must-have in your TBR.
This is the first book I have read from this author and I must say it was quite a fantastic, epic, enjoyable read perfect for those that love strong, brave female characters and protagonists.
The story follows on protagonist Sam Silverthorn as she became the leader of a wolf pack and her struggles that came along with it. She must protect her pack against the demons and her magical friends are there to help her as well. This novel was pretty face paced so my attention was stuck to it. This novel features many action scenes that will leave readers on the edge of their scenes and many suspenseful moments that will have readers wanting to read much more.
Though I will say that the description could be edited since there are no spaces after the periods. This is was such an epic fantasy read for me and I would like to read more from this author.
This was the most unique werewolf novel I’ve ever read. Sam, a 50-year-old werewolf, narrates the story, diving right into her sad past, including being exiled from her pack for being gay. In the present, she has reunited with her pack and is now the leader. Sam is resilient and encounters numerous problems ranging from her nasty brothers trying to take over the pack to her human lover about to die of cancer to having to save a little girl from her father, the devil himself. The pace of this book is fast, which I liked, but at the same time, I felt like certain things were rushed, especially the ending. I wanted a little more time to absorb the world Sam lived in, especially when introduced to less commonly seen beings such as leprechauns. Overall, I enjoyed Sam’s story and am curious to see what happens in the next book, especially with the devil’s daughter. Also - I laughed a lot while reading this book because of Sam’s lamenting about getting old, and yet she was still a fit werewolf and fought bravely against demons.
When Sam Silverthorn becomes leader of the pack, her troubles will complicate her day-to-day life. In addition to dealing with the dreaded “change” that mid-life normally brings to a female, she has to keep her wolves behaving themselves. Their moonshine business doesn’t seem to be earning them enough to support the pack. Her brother is plotting against her. Only her stubborn but fair nature, along with her trusted friends, can keep everyone safe. But when bigger troubles come their way, will she be ready to deal with it?
Great series starter! An interesting PWF read. Sam Silverthorn is back after her father's death and her previous exile to rule the pack as alpha. The pack's main source of income is moonshine. If ruling a pack wasn't challenging enough, she has a rebellious older brother causing problems and a (ff) mate dying of cancer. In her spare time, she hunts demons and fulfills a protector role for other supernaturals. There is plenty of action, intrigue, and adventure. The romance fades to black and is very loving. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
This is a unique well written paranormal story. Sam Silverthorn is 50-year-old werewolf with a human partner who's dying of cancer and being Alpha to her pack. This story is from Sam's POV and the trials and tribulations she's going through. It's an interesting story.

This book was not what I expected. It holds much fantasy, deception, and magic. I just could not connect to the characters and flow of the story but I have a feeling as the series developed it might connect the story better.
This book was amazing and unexpected. It took me on an emotional ride through most of the chapters. Giving the feels around every corner. Hell and Limbo was unexpected, and made Sam and Eliana's lives difficult just because others were being greedy. But it all worked out in the end for Sam, Maggie and the rest of the pack.
