Discretion and Daring

Rate this book
A surprising invitation leads Elizabeth to discover the most unexpected villany…and the deepest love. When Mr. Darcy invited Elizabeth Bennet to visit Pemberley, his stated purpose was that her friendliness and vivacity might help his sister Georgiana recover from her lingering sorrow and shame from the events at Ramsgate…but his hidden intention was to set his secret attachment to the test. Seeing Elizabeth at his beloved Pemberley would surely either end a mere infatuation, or prove that their connection would be one to treasure for all time. Elizabeth Bennet agreed to be a guest at Pemberley on the condition that Jane might come with her to see Mr. Bingley once again. She expected a pleasant time of good society and being of use to Georgiana. But Elizabeth could never have anticipated the hold the Darcys and their beautiful corner of Derbyshire would soon have over her heart. Still less could she have guessed at the dark secret weighing down Georgiana’s spirits…or the daring confrontation she would face to free her. With Georgiana’s happiness and her own heart on the line, can Elizabeth balance discretion with daring to set all to rights…and find love, too? Discretion and Daring is a sweet Pride and Prejudice variation featuring new twists to familiar villains and a happy ending for Jane Austen’s most beloved couple. Join Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy as they overcome their pride and prejudice, learn to balance the virtues of discretion and daring, and fall deeply in love.

When I read the free sample I left off reading at the end of it but later I finished a Booksprout copy. There are cute moments but readers familiar with the original might find issues with the fuzzy, illogical relationship to the canonical events and timeline.

The first chapter starts a little slow as Elizabeth loiters under a tree and thinks about why she's thinking about Mr. Darcy. It is morning, and all Elizabeth's sisters are still asleep. She's gone out to read but can't concentrate. It seems like only a short time elapses as she's hardly read a page until an unknown carriage arrives. But all her sisters are awake and outside now, and they're breathing the midday air. There are hens. There is a to-do about the Bennets standing there watching the carriage and wondering who it is, and it is not clear why they need to crowd each other on their tiptoes to see the carriage, I would think the Longbourn grounds would have sufficient space for the whole family to stand somewhere with a direct line of sight. Knowing where everyone was standing while they waited does very little to bring the story forward. Just let the visitor come out and start explaining why they've come.

The timeline is somewhat confusing as it is said that it is June. So I thought that this is set after Elizabeth's visit to Kent which took place around Easter. But no, apparently it is weeks after after Darcy left Hertfordshire. We must assume that Hunsford has not happened because Elizabeth is still under the impression that Darcy dislikes her. And she has not been to Pemberley. It is said that the tolerable comment happened at Darcy and Elizabeth's last meeting when he refused to dance with Elizabeth. So Darcy left straight after the assembly? But no, Elizabeth has stayed at Netherfield to tend to Jane. Go figure. Wickham has told her tales about Georgiana by this point. It is not clear if the Bingleys were gone as well as Darcy? Did Miss Bingley send her letter that said they were gone, never to look back? Possibly not, as Elizabeth is thinking of Bingley in terms of him becoming Jane's husband instead of that dude who jilted Jane and broke her heart.

Eventually we find out that the carriage contains Darcy. They walk a bit, (there are SO many mentions of walks and strolls in here - when in doubt, go for a walk) and Elizabeth muses about her sisters, among other random things. The entire family went walking with them but they're still able to have a private conversation. She tells him that she was under the impression that he wasn't keen on her. He says this is a mistaken notion and invites her to Pemberley because her witty and vivacious company would be good for Georgiana. Then she says that she was under the impression that he disapproved of her. Darcy is surprised, which is surprising because it was already implied in the previous exchange. He says he admires her. She agrees to go if Jane can also come. The Bingleys will be there and Darcy learns that Jane likes Mr. Bingley. It looks like he hasn't cottoned on to Miss Bingley's dislike of the Bennet girls. Elizabeth's parents agree to let the girls travel with Darcy. I did not understand how Darcy refused to dance with Elizabeth at their last meeting and called her tolerable and now he suddenly admires her so much that he wants her at his house.

That's the end of the free sample and where I left off the first time. By this time, Mrs. Bennet has told us twice that Mr. Darcy is "an unpleasant gentleman". Mr. Darcy was in the vicinity during one of these comments and I would worry that he heard it.

A sentence: "His gaze flitted past hers, before stopping on Mr. Bennet, was just emerging from his study to greet their visitor."

Chaperonage is not a large concern for anyone. Jane and Elizabeth travel to Derbyshire with Darcy and no other chaperone. Mrs. Annesley is at Pemberley but she can't be everywhere at once. They make Georgiana's acquaintance and later another of their sisters takes the stagecoach alone and their parents exhibit no concern that is apparent to the reader. But I liked that Lydia wanted to help someone for a change.

The Bingleys and Hursts arrive to Pemberley too, and this presented more timeline confusion as it was implied that the Bennet girls only know Miss Bingley from the assembly and the Hursts are introduced as if they've never met before. Where were they when Elizabeth was tending to Jane at Netherfield? If it was a bachelor establishment it wasn't quite proper for Jane and Elizabeth to even visit, let alone stay the night. A version of a conversation that the canonical Darcy, Elizabeth and Miss Bingley had at Netherfield takes place at Pemberley and it's not a deja-vu for them so it is not entirely clear which of the P&P events took place in this AU in which order and which didn't.

There is a spot of danger that gives Elizabeth a chance to display her discretion and daring but in the end her participation seemed rather pointless and superfluous. The reason the villain was taken into custody had nothing to do with her and it could have easily been done without involving her at all. The eventual proposal was pretty sweet and there is a happy ending for all concerned except Miss Bingley, that we know of.

The writing style is fine for the most part but if I was editing this I would cut some repetition. It is not a long story but some things still managed to feel like filler material.

TL;DR: I didn't hate it and I didn't love it, I was just confused. It's like somebody cut the P&P timeline into tiny squares, threw them all in the air and arranged them differently. Some squares got lost in the wind, and I don't know what's going on.

Fitzwilliam Darcy invites Elizabeth Bennet to a house party at Pemberley. He wishes her to befriend his sister and aid in her recovery from melancholy.

Although he doesn’t declare it, he wants to test whether his obsession with Elizabeth is just infatuation or real love, that can bridge the social chasm between them.

Elizabeth does not like Darcy but agrees, providing her sister Jane can accompany her. The goal being time with Mr Bingley, who Jane is in love with.

As the party progresses, Elizabeth finds her opinion of Darcy softening.
Her friendship with Georgiana makes progress but despite disclosing the events at Ramsgate, still more secrets are held back.

A startling visitor reveals the secrets and all must work together to prevent disaster.

This debut from Amelia Westerly is quite pleasing. There are some surprising plot developments, which seem to push propriety but nothing too outrageous. As a novella, there is sometimes a conflict between brevity and necessary depth.

I look forward to seeing what Amelia Westerly may write in the longer form of a novel.

This was a well-written, short variation, but I struggled with some of its details. Firstly, I found it challenging to figure out where the timeline of this variation fits within the original novel. It’s implied that it takes place after the Bingleys and Mr Darcy have left Netherfield - but then there’s a conversation that takes place in the variation that is lifted directly from an exchange that took place while Jane was ill at Netherfield, but it is treated as if it is an entirely new conversation. Secondly, I found its subplot was a bit vague, particularly in the details pertaining to Lydia’s involvement. Perhaps this final point is due to the variation’s short length, but Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship felt underdeveloped to me, and the resolution rushed.

The story description sets up the premise for us. This story has little angst, IMHO.

Darcy claims his invitation for Elizabeth to come to Pemberley is because he believes her friendship with his sister will bring Georgiana out of her melancholy. He does not inform Elizabeth about Ramsgate. Elizabeth only agrees if Jane can come too as she hopes Bingley will renew his attentions to her. (Darcy travels with two women and no chaperone???)

Elizabeth does become a good friend for Georgiana but can see that something else is bothering her...even after Georgiana informs her about Ramsgate.

Then a surprise visitor shows up at Pemberley and things come to a head. I won't reveal any more as this point is the only exciting part, in my opinion.

Yes, Darcy does finally tell Elizabeth of his attraction but this part was lacking in romance for me. The story did not read smoothly for me.

With much discretion but little daring

This would have been a most perfect variation if not for it’s lack of angst and somewhat shallow love affair between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, save for the last Chapter when we see the lovers joined in marriage.

Mr. Darcy invites Elizabeth Bennet to Pemberley in the guise of having to help his sister, Georgiana, navigate a broken heart and spirit. Although he has a second agenda, which is to test Elizabeth if she is fit to be mistress of Pemberley.

Although there are some meetings between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, they are not adequate enough to establish the firm foundation of a great love affair. The exchanges are very subdued; and the author wrote the characters so representative of who they are in Canon, that one would wish for some variation in the characterization area; a more passionate side perhaps given their growing feelings for each other. However, there is a greater show in establishing Elizabeth’s deeper relationship with Georgiana. And who would have though Lydia Bennet to be a determined heroine?

Very well-written but one would have hoped for a little more oomph

Avid Reader

This was a short, sweet, delightful story where Darcy invites Elizabeth and Jane to Pemberly to cheer Georgina's mood. Wickham is in Meryton, and Elizabeth is still angry with Darcy concerning his "tolerable" statement. Yet, Elizabeth agrees because Jane is coming with her so that she can further her acquaintance with Bingley away from Meryton and Mrs. Bennet. Georgina does warm up to Elizabeth but there's still more going on, and Lydia's appearance let's readers know just how dastardly Wickham is. There's a HEA for our dear couple.

On a fine morning in June Darcy returns to Longbourn. He has an odd request, he asks Elizabeth to accompany him to Pemberley to befriend his sister Georgiana who is currently in a melancholy mood. He thinks Elizabeth will cheer her up and secretly he wants to discover if he really loves Elizabeth. Elizabeth is surprised, but as the Bingleys will also be guests, she agrees on the condition that Jane is also allowed to travel. Arriving in Pemberley Elizabeth soon befriends Georgiana and becomes her confident. But the shy girl hides a secret she is not willing to tell. Will Elizabeth be able to discover the secret and help Georgiana out of the melancholy? And what about the puzzling Mr Darcy who conducts himself so differently in Pemberley than he does in Meryton? Will he ever be more to her than her friend's brother?

The story of the author Amelia Westley was well written and give 4 out of 5 stars.

I liked very much the friendship that develops between Elizabeth and Georgiana and the way Elizabeth befriends the shy girl. Georgiana is so sweet in showing her affection for Elizabeth. I like the thought that they are close friends before there is love between Darcy and Elizabeth.
I also like the way the friendship between Darcy and Elizabeth develops. Being at Pemberley means that Elizabeth is able to see Darcy at ease because he his familiar with his surroundings and the people there. She discovers that she has judged him unjust and that she like this "new" version of Mr Darcy. Elizabeth's opinion of him improves slowly and this means she is able to allow the growing of her regard and her tender feelings for him. The scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth are very nice written.
There is only one villain in this version but the Pemberley party is able to overcome this villain and he/she gets what he/she deserves.

I was a little bit disappointed with the love story. Whereas I like the scenes between ODC (you can feel the tension and the affection grow), I was disappointed with the outcome (when they declare their love they only embrace). I had hoped for a bit more, in my opinion Elizabeth and Darcy need at least to share one small kiss, they are both passionate by nature and in my opinion they won't wait with kissing until after the marriage. But that can be only my personal estimation.
But I was somehow confused about the time. The story starts in June, this means the summer after Bingley and Darcy first came to Netherfield, a year after Ramsgate took places. I can't imagine that there is so little resentment on Jane's and Elizabeth's side about the separation when this means that Jane was heartbroken for a half year. And Wickham would have had more time to speak ill of Darcy but apparently there was nothing like this. And I also can't imagine that the events, which are related to Georgiana's secret would have only taken place in this summer, a year after Ramsgate, I think they would have taken place much earlier to make sense.
Another topic is that I think that it would not have been possible that young females are that long alone with young men like it is sometimes described in the book and that it would not have been possible to travel that long without chaperone without causing problems. But I am no expert at this, it only felt as not right for me.

I nevertheless enjoyed the story and I recommend it.

Oh, Just NO!

I love a good Jane Austen Pride & Prejudice fanfiction variation, but unfortunately, this is not one of them. I was shocked by how horrible it was within just the first few pages of the first chapter. I'm wondering if the stated author actually wrote this, or if a ghostwriter not terribly familiar with the original Jane Austen or the fabulous contemporary Jane Austen fanfiction wrote it. The first thing that had my eyebrows lifting toward my hairline was the mention of the Bennett's having a footman! I don't think I've ever read any variation where that happened, and they certainly did not have one in canon. They had Mr. Hill, who comes across as a man-of-all-work, but he is certainly no footman! To add insult to injury, this footman acted as a groom as well! Seriously, does this author (or their ghostwriter) have no clue about Regency times, what would have been common in a somewhat low-income minor gentry household, etc., … or even what the original story mentions? Another issue: characters magically appearing and reappearing in places that didn't seem to be close at all. And the conversation was so incredibly stilted and unrealistic—painful to my inner Austen-loving ear—that I just could not keep reading. And Mr. Darcy's proposal for a visit to Pemberley in that first chapter is quite incomprehensible, and again, so NOT in tune with the times (or the original) at all. I'm all for fanfiction variations playing around with aspects of the canon, but there needs to be limits. Authors should not stretch our credulity too far. The cover of this is beautiful—typical of many mimicking the “Bridgerton” look these days, but not quite what I think of when I imagine a Pride and Prejudice variation—if only the book matched! There are scads of wonderful Jane Austen fanfiction authors with lots of stories to choose from, and I suggest you find an author who has a much better grip not only on Jane Austen's characters and plots but also on the Regency times themselves.

I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

I loved it! It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. A surprising invitation leads Elizabeth to discover the most unexpected villainy, and the deepest love. When Mr. Darcy invited Elizabeth Bennet to visit Pemberley, his stated purpose was that her friendliness and vivacity might help his sister Georgiana recover from her lingering sorrow and shame from the events at Ramsgate, but his hidden intention was to set his secret attachment to the test. Seeing Elizabeth at his beloved Pemberley would surely either end a mere infatuation, or prove that their connection would be one to treasure for all time. Still less could she have guessed at the dark secret weighing down Georgiana’s spirits…or the daring confrontation she would face to free her. With Georgiana’s happiness and her own heart on the line, can Elizabeth balance discretion with daring to set all to rights and find love, too? This variation features new twists to familiar villains and a happy ending for Jane Austen’s most beloved couple. Join Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy as they overcome their pride and prejudice, learn to balance the virtues of discretion and daring, and fall deeply in love. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. I highly recommend to everyone.

If you can get past the premise.....

Darcy shows up at Longbourn in a quest to convince Elizabeth to visit Pemberly and help him cheer up Georgiana, who has closed herself off since her debacle at Ramsgate. Elizabeth agrees, but after hearing that the Bingleys and Hursts will also be in residence, she requests that Jane accompany her. Elizabeth's motivation is to reunite Jane and Bingley, and help Georgiana, since at this point Elizabeth doesn't have a good opinion of Darcy. However, Darcy's secondary and secret reason for getting Elizabeth to Pemberly is to explore his own persistent feelings for her, and come to a decision.

This premise is sweet but silly and contrived. But even if you put that aside, the circumstances and the timing were confusing. The story begins on a clear June morning, which would indicate summer. We all know that in the original P&P the characters met in the fall. Yet, a lot of the events that would have happened by the following June don't seem to have happened. As far as I can tell the only thing referred to is the infamous insult at the Meryton assembly. The author never explains at what point in everyone's lives this tale is occurring. All we know is the insult, that Darcy admires Elizabeth, Jane admires Bingley, and Georgiana had her scandal in Ramsgate. It was a little disorienting to suddenly jump to June.

Nonetheless, this is an interesting and heartwarming story. There's a situation with Lydia that was ludicrous, but otherwise the romance was lovely. The only villain is Wickham, but he's dealt with handily. The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it for a sweet and engaging story.

Average

Competently written in terms of plot and pace. But frankly feels a bit untethered. Also lacking in chemistry in terms of the couples supposedly in love. There are copy editing issues re spelling errors, homophone mix ups, etc. Also not for purists offended by wrong or inconsistent formal address, modernisms in language and manners, and a wholly different personality for Lydia.

The untethered part is that the story begins with Darcy visiting Meryton to ask Lizzy whether she would come to Pemberley to help Georgiana. Setting aside the conundrum of why Elizabeth Bennet would ever do such a huge favor for a man who has insulted her, the canon events after the Assembly are not a factor. The author does repurpose one of the Netherfield scenes and at the end of the story, alludes to interference and Bingley's choices.. But otherwise we are left wondering about the foundations of the characters' interactions.

ODC ne er really discuss fee, instead for one another, even while Darcy confesses his 'other' motive for his invitation.

Certainly readable. But not substantial enough to be a must read.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this!

While this story was exceedingly good I actually missed the screeching of Mrs Bennet along with that toad-eater Mr Collins and his one true love - Lady Catherine! The story just is a tad bit flat without their nonsense! I
Essentially- Darcy invited Elizabeth and Jane to Pemberley to help Georgiana recover from her near disaster with Wickham. Unbelievable that Lydia Bennet almost saves Georgiana by stealing the letters she wrote to Wickham. A plot is set to capture him and send him to debtor prison. ( why he's not tried in military court for desertion isn't explained). Of course then Darcy and Elizabeth are free to fall in love and all is right with the world!

I won’t lie, I didn’t finish this book. I had a lot of trouble understanding where in the orignal plot this book starts or what the author wanted to be canon. Since I had trouble getting my footing the characters confused me and I had trouble finding them believable. I also found the society rules confusing - were they supposed to be realistic for time or more relaxed? I don’t need it to be historically accurate but more aligned. The author stresses at one point that Darcy ensures he keeps his study door open for propriety’s sake but he also travels alone in a carriage with two unrelated women without a maid for two days.
The book itself is well written in terms of grammar etc. and the plot isn’t awful. I think the author just needs to really start the book with clear picture though.

Only he knows it's a test as to his resolve. Miss Elizabeth is there to befriend his sister.

Georgiana Darcy is sorely in need of a friend and courage to rise above her wounded heart and her naivete. Miss Elizabeth Bennet is just the one to show her how. This story showed Miss Lydia to be less flighty and more willing to listen to her elder sister Elizabeth's warnings. So much so that she actually takes steps to come to the aide of Georgiana Darcy, whom she has never met, but realizes is in need of assistance. I liked this brash but selfless Lydia as she, along with her elder sisters and Mr. Darcy came up with a plan for the well- deserved comeuppance of one George Wickham. This was Fantastic!

Actually 4.8 stars, rounded up to 5

This is a lovely, low-angst story where the tension comes from a different character. It was a pleasure not to have to deal with most of the usual villains and dramatic events. Lydia’s impetuous arrival demonstrated her daring and disregard for social norms but also her recognition of Lizzy’s concern for her wellbeing. The slight deduction was for the incomplete storylines, namely Jane and Bingley plus Lydia and Georgiana.

Recommended as a light and very interesting perspective on a variation totally without Collins and the Hunsford debacle.

A visit to Pemberley

Instead of leaving for good and trying to forget Elizabeth Bennet, Darcy returns shortly to Longbourn to request Elizabeth visit Pemberley in an attempt to help Georgiana. Elizabeth agrees if Jane goes with her. So off to Pemberley they go. The house party grows to include the Bingleys and Hursts. While there Elizabeth gets to see a different side of Darcy and learn about a different side to Wickham. Lydia ends up being a surprising character that I enjoyed in this book. A sweet light heated read for the most part except a confrontation with Wickham.

Another alternate Pride & Prejudice novel, where Darcy invites Elizabeth (who brings Jane) to befriend his sister, Georgiana, who is feeling down in the dumps (because of a certain rake). Lizzy and Georgiana grow close and become friends, which is really lovely, including how Elizabeth talks about gaining another sister. I thought there was a little missing between Lizzy and Darcy; in the book he's so passionate and volatile he cannot keep his feelings to himself. But overall it was a lovely read.

This is a very straightforward story. The language is easy to understand. No hidden meanings and sarcasm to ponder at. The conversations and dialogues are also quite contemporary without much reference to the etiquettes and decorum of the Regency era. In addition to the length of the story, therefore, I would say this work is for teenage readers or one who is new to JAFFs.

Short and sweet.

A well written variation that takes Georgina’s experience at Ramsgate as it’s fulcrum. It is low angst, and the plot unfolds nicely. The characters are faithful to the canon, and their actions in this new context entirely believable. The dialogue is often witty, with Miss Bingley’s malice and Elizabeth’s ripostes very clever.

I was okay.

I would have like this more if there had been a better introduction. I was confused most of time throughout reading. I assume the Netherfield party left Hertfordshire earlier than in canon which lessens bitter resentments etc., but it was never explained. And I still do not know where the original diverged in order to cause this alternate variation.

The timeline and the characters are completely out of line with canon. It feels more in line with 2005 movie than the book (or other adaptations), in terms of characterisation and some of the character behaviour, but even then it’s still illogical. Also pretty anachronistic regarding Regency rules/social mores. I couldn’t suspend disbelief at all so gave up.

Just as good the second time around.

There is enough canon for us to feel at home, all cosy with our beloved characters, but also enough twists to keep us awake. The high suspense episodes are short enough to keep us breathing. I love it.
