Lament of the Wolf

Rate this book
I am death’s master. I yield to none.

The mortal world hangs in the balance. The witch queen of the Netherworld has everything she needs to destroy the veil and bring chaos and ruin to the living. Lark is determined to stop her by any means necessary. She and Gavriel search for answers, anything to aid them in halting the fall of the world. When tragedy strikes, Lark must rely on a new ally or risk losing everything. Unable to tell friend from foe, Lark must trust her instincts and hope her human emotions don’t cloud her judgment.

“You’re chasing a happily ever after, and I don’t think that’s how this story ends.”

Having bid farewell to her friends, Daciana travels alone. As she works tirelessly to forget the painful memories of the Forbidden Shrine, she recruits an old contact to aid in Lark's quest to stop the witch queen and gather allies. But old feelings rekindle, threatening to burn them both. Can she ever truly outrun the past?

Nothing itched like an unanswered question.

Langford is forced to travel with Alistair, the man he is determined not to love. He focuses instead on his research, on finding a way to kill Nereida. The discovery of a fabled weapon could turn the tide, though forging such a weapon is no longer possible. In a world of impossible truths, Langford is determined to find the answer to save the mortal world...
Before it's too late.

Lament of the Wolf is a dark reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood.

1st Review:

I don't think I have the words to properly express how much I loved this book. This might be a bit of a bold statement, but out of the 200+ books I've read this year, I think this was my favorite. This book has everything I want out of a fantasy book: it has romance and adventure, there's monsters and magic, and I absolutely adore the cast of characters in this book. Songs of the Wicked was already one of my favorite new reads this year, and this was a perfect follow-up to that book, and I loved it even more than the first one. To me the beginning of this book had a bit of a different vibe than the last book but I liked that because I felt like it gave the characters a chance to go on their own separate journey's before reuniting. This book alternates points of view between Lark, Daciana, and Langford, and each of these characters are paired up and have their own separate journey's that they go on in the beginning of the book. I really liked each point of view and I feel sometimes in other books with alternating points of view there is always that one point of view that I enjoy less than the others but I loved each point of view equally. I liked how they are paired together based on their love interests, and I feel like having them separated in the beginning made it so much more satisfying when they were finally reunited. I loved the bond that these characters share, but I also liked how, throughout the book, it felt like they were collecting new characters along the way. There is just so much I loved about this book. I like how there are little references to fairytales in the book (the little mermaid in the first one and little red riding hood and Beauty and the Beast in this one) and how there is a good balance of dark moments and light moments along with little pockets of humor. I am such a romance lover, so reading Langford and Alistair admiting their love for each other was one of my favorite parts of the book. I loved Lark and Gavriel's romance in the first book so I was happy that they were able to overcome any rough patches in their relationship and there were so many quiet, sweet moments between these two that I loved. I am curious to see how Daciana and Kenna's romance will play out since it is clear they both still have feelings for each other. They were lovers in the past, but a great tragedy tore them apart, so I am hoping the next book they will fully embrace each other again. I feel like I could go on and on about all the moments I loved in this book, and it still wouldn't be enough to express how much I truly love this book. The book makes me so happy that I am a reader, and I think the author created something truly magical in this series. I'm not sure how many books are planned after this one, whether it's just one or five more, but I don't think I could ever get tired of these characters. I am fully committed until the very end, and I'm definitely curious to read if there will be new points of view in the next book or if the author will keep the same. I would love to read Alistair's point of view in the future. I think this book was as close to perfection as possible for a book, in my opinion, and I think anyone who loves reading romantic fantasies or fantasy romance books will enjoy this book.

2nd Review:

The first time I read this book, I fell so hard for it, and I'm so happy to report that I'm still so in love with this series. If I could rate this book higher than five stars, I definitely would because it deserves a hundred stars. Out of the thousands of books I've read in my lifetime, this is easily one of my favorites (I would say in my top three all time favorite books) and I really wish more people would read this series because it deserves all the love. I really like how this book continues to have elements of different fairytales like in the first book, but it isn't a strict fairytale retelling. There are monsters, gods, demons, and so many fun supernatural and magical elements in the book. I like that the points of view alternate between Daciana, Lark, and Langford, and I enjoy every every point of view equally. I like that the characters go through their own mini arc before the characters all reunite later in the book to deal with the overarching plot arc that started in the first book. I am a huge romance fan, so I love that this book delivers on different romance tropes. If you love a friends to lovers storyline, you have Alistair and Langford's story arc. If you want a second chance romance, you have Daciana and Kenna's story arc. And Lark and Gavriel's story arc gives you a dash of enemies to lovers from the first book (more enemies from Gavriel's perspective than Lark's) and a dash of fated soul mates in this book and I love each and every one of these romances. I like the addition of more characters and how it allows the story to grow much greater than it appeared in the first book. I like how the author weaves pockets of humor throughout the book to balance out the darker or more emotional scenes. I love the world that the author has created in this series, but I especially love the characters that she has crafted. I have grown so attached to these characters in only two books, and I can't wait to read what the author has in store for these characters. I'm the future. This is definitely the type of book I can see myself reading over and over again without ever growing tired of it.

3rd Review:

I have read this book three times now, and I still stand by my original reviews and I believe that this book is as close to perfection for me as a book can get. This book has almost everything I could possibly want out of a fantasy book, and love is not a strong enough word to describe my feelings towards this book. This series has one of my all-time favorite cast of characters, and I love each character in this tight knit found family group so much so that it's hard to pick a favorite. I really enjoy the storyline and how the characters get separated a bit at the beginning to go off on their own journeys, but then they are reunited, and the reunion is so satisfying. I've always been a fan of fairytale retellings even as a very young reader and while I wouldn't consider this book a fairytale retelling, it definitely has elements of different fairytales sprinkled in which I really enjoyed. I am a bit sad that there is only one book left in the series because this is the type of series that I don't want to end. I could read these characters going on all sort of adventures and new grow tired of them, but I also know that this won't be the last time I read this book. I am a huge rereader, and I know this is going to be one of those series I have read at least once a year, which is pretty accurate since I'm already at my third reread. I just love this series so so much, and I just really want more people to read it because I need more people to talk about it with.

Just finished this book moments ago and wowww I enjoyed it a lot!
Love the multiple POVs and all the pairings! Lark and Gavriel were solid, Daci and Kenna are so cute together, but if I have to pick one... Langford and Alistair! I just love their angsty, bittersweet, passionate romance. Cough cough and I love the potential of a new pairing we get to see in this book 2! The world building was as good and elaborate like the first book, I love it! Also enjoy the writing style a lot because the book was easy to read even with multiple POVs.
Those last few chapters was... A RIDE. So many things happened at once and like ughhhh can't wait for book 3!

The second installment of C.A. Farran’s series, A Dreamer’s Misfortune, begins with the events directly following the jaw dropping cliffhanger ending of Songs of the Wicked. As if I wasn’t already in pieces, Lament of the Wolf made sure to shatter my heart and soul a little bit more before picking me back up and putting me back together.

I physically feel goosebumps popping up across my arms—and a slight shiver going down my spine—as I revisit the brilliance that is this sequel. Lament of the Wolf is a journey to battle the beasts and demons within—and around—us all. It’s a harrowing adventure that perfectly encapsulates the darker side of life. Still, the book manages to feel comforting, warm, and full of joy.

It’s a testament to Farran’s expert storytelling. She has an uncanny ability to paint a picture with every word typed on the page. Her plot perfectly balances terrifying, gripping realism with magical, mystical creatures and concepts. The characters are equally real, making you instantly want to join the found family of misfits.

I’m not sure what you should be more afraid of, the monsters capable of ripping off your head or the romantic relationships sure to pull your heartstrings so taught that they may burst. Lament of the Wolf is truly a cathartic experience and a must read for fans of dark fantasy retellings and fairytales reimagined.

Prepared to be entranced by Lament of the Wolf!

Once again, I loved returning to this world and spending time with the characters. I particularly loved Alistair and Langford's storyline, and the LGBT+ representation in this book was done beautifully. While the pace was slow to begin with, it very much made room for a character study of Langford and Daciana in particular, while also revisiting the reasons we loved Lark so much in Songs of the Wicked. I can't wait to see what comes next for C.A Farran!

I got the absolute pleasure of being an ARC reader for C. A. Farran, and I could not wait to dive into the second in this series.

After the cliffhanger from Songs of the Wicked, Lament of the Wolf picks up and follows Lark, Daciana, and Langford on their separate journeys to complete their tasks. This book was the perfect continuation of the story, and had the best character developments. We got to learn more about Daciana’s past and her demons that haunt her and what makes her truly badass. There were so many wonderful nods and surprise guests from SOW featured in the story, too! There are new characters introduced, more “friends” added to the mix, and even more twists and turns than SOW.

I love Farran’s writing because she truly immerses the reader with her details and storytelling. At many times, I completely forgot I was reading and looked up from my book and had to readjust my thoughts. Each character has their own personality, and they’re true to their character throughout the whole story. Sweet Langford worries about books getting destroyed in a battle and uses words Gavriel or Alistar never would. Lark is her kind, hopeful, yet worrisome self throughout every battle and challenge. Farran throws in quick lines that are so wholesome to each character, and it truly brings each character to life and makes you feel like you’re a part of their clan.

This series, and basically anything written by Farran going forward, is one that I will ALWAYS recommend to any fantasy lover!! Bring your tissues, and prepare for your heart to be destroyed, and enjoy the adventure!

Lament of the Wolf is one of my top reads this year—run, don’t walk, to pick this one up on or before release day (October 10th)!

When I read Songs of the Wicked last year, I knew Caity would be one of my must-buy authors and Lament has only solidified that opinion. I am in love with this world and these characters; Lark and her found family hold a piece of my heart. And, if you’re a fan of fairytales, keep an eye out. You will find several tales woven into Lament.

Lament picks up right where SOW ends, this time with multiple POVs. All of our favorite characters have split up to work on separate missions toward a common goal. We finally get a deep dive into the minds of Daciana and Langford and learn more of their history and secrets. We see their heartbreak and resiliency. We also see new characters introduced and old ones popping up when you least expect it. Be prepared for emotional whiplash.

Lament will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you yearning for the next installment of A Dreamer’s Misfortune. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

This book is amazing! Lament of The Wolf is Book 2 in the Dreamer's Misfortune series and must be read after Songs Of The Wicked.

I was so excited to get back into this world. I missed Lark and everyone else.

The author's writing style and storytelling is phenomenal. The imagery was so vivid. It played like a fantasy movie in my head. I loved the multiple POVs in this book. I loved how it was both plot and character driven. The emotional growth these characters go through was astounding.

My emotions were all over the place. I laughed, was shocked a few times and some of the dialogue made my heart melt. I honestly didn't want the story to end. I tried taking my time with this one to savor every word. However, that didn't happen. It was so worth the wait though. One of my top reads of the year! I loved it so much! Lament of The Wolf deserves all the stars!!!

Read if you like: Little Red Riding Hood reimagining, found family, mythical creatures, soul mates, multiple POVs

*ARC Review*

What a wonderful second book in the A Dreamer's Misfortune series! This book follows the rag-tag bunch of characters from Songs of the Wicked, from the POV of Lark, Daciana and Langford.

I love Farran's prose and the way she is able to craft each character so realistically and lovingly. This book/series has a LOT of characters, but even the ones who are more accessory never feel flat or one-dimensional. We get to learn new things about old characters as well as get introduced to some new and sometimes surprising characters. I also love the elements of classic fairy tales that Farran weaves into the story, without it being too forced.

Picking off shortly after the end of the first book, I found the first half of the story to be a little meandering in terms of overall plot, though it does provide an opportunity for character exploration. Then the last third of the book things start happening very quickly. I think this book does a good job of avoiding the "second book in a trilogy" curse where not much really happens (won't say more than that to avoid spoilers). My only nitpick is the alternating POV chapters. They very reliably switch between the three narrators, which I found a bit jarring when the group was separated earlier in the book. I feel like a set up where you get a few chapters from one POV before switching would have flowed better, at least for me. This is much less of an issue when the characters all come back together.

Overall, wonderful book to settle down on a rainy or foggy autumn night, with a cozy blanket and a cup of hot apple cider or hot chocolate. Can't wait for the next installment!

To say I gobbled up this ARC is an understatement. I am such a HUGE fan of Songs of the Wicked, and I wasn’t sure how the author would match the magic of that first book. Well lemme tell you… she exceeded expectations and then some.

I loved how this book was split into three point of views. It not only allowed you to stay close to Lark, but it gave you the opportunity to get to know Daciana, Langford, and Alistair more… and completely fall in love with them. And the best part for me was how even though the story was essentially broken into threes, each pov provided a puzzle piece to the overall story.

IT WAS SO DAMN SATISFYING!

There are characters you end up forgiving though you were prepared to loathe them for eternity, there was redemption and twists and well written spice. And of course, there were moments that had me laughing with glee (Alistair’s wit is seriously the best).

The writing remains gorgeous. The characters keep their depth and each of their arcs are noteworthy. The reveals are well placed. And yes, this book still leaves you wanting so much more.

I’m the kind of person who loves the first book in a series so much that I try not to get my hopes up in the books to come because sometimes they fail to measure up. I don’t know how she did it, but this one was almost better than the first. And it has me looking forward to more of these characters and more of this beautifully talented writer’s stories.

Like, no pressure, but I’m already craving the next book!!

I was blessed to receive an ARC copy of such a fabulous book. Let me tell you why!

I have just finished this book and I am in a massive book-hangover.

The way Farran seamlessly picks up where we left off with book one, and how she weaves three POVs, without any confusion, into one seamless storyline speaks VOLUMES to this genius author. I loved Farran’s imagery, the way she made me feel like I was a part of the environment, be it in an ancient library, the forest, or in a fight. The character development was on point, and the voice of each POV so dang strong—I want side stories for each, IMMEDIATELY! For this chunky novel, if I am playing favorites, Daciana is my favorite POV. I loved seeing the depths of her mind, sifting out the angst and love through the stubbornness, and seeing the history that’s made her so formidable.

It’s also so fun to see cameos and twists of other classic fairytales darkly interwoven into the storyline. Beauty and the Beast, Little Red Riding Hood, and more.

I have so many new favorite quotes from this read and a ton of highlights, and I will be returning later (when the kids are at daycare) to try and pick a favorite to add here. But for now, let me say this, if you need an autumnal-vibe book that will fill you full of feels, look no further than Lament of the Wolf! Now grab your favorite snack—an apple, chocolate, tea, beer—and sit down next to the hearth for an epic ride with this novel!

I can hardly wait for book 3 (you hear that, Farran)!

I was lucky enough to get to read an ARC of Lament of the Wolf. You’re not gonna want to miss this one! It is book 2 in A Dreamer's Misfortune series with Songs of the Wicked being the first.

This is one of those books that after you finish it, it’s hard to pick up another because you can’t get these characters and their world out of your head and you just want to spend more time with them.

Reading it was a WILD RIDE!! So many twists and turns and unexpected disasters. Plus, the sexual tension between certain characters was KILLING ME!! It was so good! I really didn't want to put it down and do my actual work lol.

These characters have lived rent free in my head since I read the first book last year. They truly feel like my friends. Beware: this book will cause ✨FEELINGS✨, but you'll get through it and be okay in the end.

Looking forward to Book 3!

Lament of the Wolf is the second installment of the series A Dreamer's Misfortune. This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and it did not disappoint, I loved being immersed in this world again.

The story picks up right where book one left off, with three alternating POVs, as the gang goes on their separate quests. Farran's writing is mesmerizing and descriptive.

There were several moments that had me anxiously at the edge of my seat. I am eager to find out what happens in the next book. I love these characters and the world so much. 🖤

Some of my favorite quotes:

⚔︎"I will never tire of you. Of your smiles and your warmth. Of your fearless heart and the way you love things without measure or limitation. I'll never tire of you because I spent my entire life wishing for you. I may not have known your name or your face, but I spent my nights wishing for home."

⚔︎"Each day is its own journey-a new beginning. You don't have to carry yesterday -not if you don't want to."

⚔︎"Sometimes, finding the person you'd burn the world for is the worst sort of curse."

⚔︎"Fear is not my master. I will never submit'

The book has found family, strong FMCs, LGBT rep, and so much more! Pleaseeeeee read this series, you won't be disappointed.

“Words were nothing when one was a monster.”

Lament of the Wolf is book two of the Dreamers Misfortune series— if you haven’t read Songs of the Wicked yet go do that right now!!!

This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and when I tell you it did not disappoint I mean it DO NOT DISAPPOINT.

Though our gang is a broken up in terms of location, we follow each group right where they left off in book one. The additional POVs were amazing and gave so much more insight to the side characters we love so much.

Langford speaks to my soul. I loved him so much in book one but book two gave us so much more depth and I want to climb inside this book and give him the biggest hug and drink tea together.

We also get a lot more Daciana and she is by far one of mg most favorite female characters of all time. She’s strong, loyal, but there’s a darkness there that I think we can all relate to on some level. Being afraid of being seen for who we really are.

Lark & Gavriel 😩😭😩 babies. I love them so much and I’m so glad we got to see their relationship progress.

If cozy, action packed fantasy with incredibly rich writing and world building is something you look for… do not hesitate to pick these books up!!

Lament of the Wolf releases October 10th so there’s still time to sneak Songs of the Wicked in beforehand.

Thank you so much C.A Farran for sending me an advanced copy I’m exchange for my honest review. You know what you did 😫

Things to expect:
🍁Action from the start
🍁Multiple POVS
🍁Truly terrifying monsters
🍁Romances all around… one that’s sure to rip your heart out
🍁Cozy, autumnal vibes
🍁LGBTQ+ rep
🍁Some of the most beautiful and inspiring writing I’ve ever read

ARC REVIEW (spoiler free)

If C.A. Farran writes it, imma read it.

The first book of this series, Songs of the Wicked was one of my top reads of 2021. I’ve been waiting anxiously for book 2!

In this incredible sequel, we are immediately plunged right back into this dark and beautiful world (the world building in this series is incredible) and continue on the paths that we started walking down in book 1. I loved exploring each of the characters in more depth, meeting so many new characters - and seeing all of the progression in their development and the adventures that they go on.

Farran writes in such a way that I find myself completely immersed in the story and connected to each character. Her writing is so beautiful and descriptive, her storytelling is beyond words.

This was 5 stars, no question. Top read of 2023!! I can’t wait to buy the physical copy and put it next to book 1 on my shelf. SO GOOD!!!

Thank you for the opportunity to be an ARC reader, it was such an honor!

"For the first time in far too long, everything in her body resonated like the end of a sustained note, finally resolved."
Where to start. I loved Songs of the Wicked. It was the perfect balance of cozy and dark which feel to me like a soul balm. Lament of the Wolf took that same feeling, added autumnal vibes, some Beauty and the Beast lore, red riding hood lore, and good old fashioned dark fantasy, and upped the cozy ante. I took my time, savoring the story and allowing it to make me laugh and cry in turn. Characters who were introduced in SotW were given more substance (including my favorite demon, but we shan't speak of that here), and everyone's favorite (or at least mine) horse whinnied herself in a few times. I adore Farran's storytelling and the overall feel of her books. I cannot recommend this series enough to fans of all fantasy, lovers of found family, and anyone who needs a cozy story with which to cuddle up.
A couple of my favorite lines (I have quite a few): "It was funny really, the way human soul carves out space for new aches."
"Death had a way of unearthing truth that life could never afford."
Farran is a master of her craft and I look forward to each tale she weaves.

I received an advanced copy of this book. My opinions are my own.

Just when you think things are at a turning point and you *think* you know where things are going - nope, nuh-uh.

Lament is a tense and emotional journey. For both the characters and the reader. There's joy and delight (giggles, too). And there's sadness and pain. So. Much. Pain.

Daciana's past, her losses, her choices.

Langford at war with his worthiness.

Lark's desperation to be free to make her own choices and the bond shared with Gavriel threatening that.

Alistair's guilt.

The new characters that slide into the journey to the reaper blade and stopping the fall of the veil fit seamlessly.

Even get a bit of a taste of Beauty and the Beast within this story.

Buckle up those breeches so they don't fall to your knees because you hit the ground running with this one.

And. It. Does. Not. STOP.

Masterful and genius and I’d expect nothing less. Farran has this immaculate way of bringing you into the found family and simultaneously letting you watch from the outside. Absolutely incredible descriptions and characterization. I loved each of these characters more going out than I did going in, if that’s even possible. I’m imagining something wildly chaotic for book 3 and I’m already terrified. Congratulations on your release! 🙏

LAMENT OF THE WOLF is a wild ride. The last few chapters will have you at the edge of your seat, clutching your loved ones, but she doesn’t leave you with an agonizing cliff hanger. Thank God!! I fell deeper in love with the characters from book one, often yelling at them to get their shit together (too bad they cant hear me). I love the fairy-tale retellings that are woven in. I cannot recommend it enough!!!

TLDR - felt a lot slower but still worth it when you love the characters so much -

So this book definitely took me a bit more to get through, I’d have stints of barely reading it and then reading 150pgs, and back and forth. With that said I still enjoyed it when I was barely reading it, and that’s because the characters are just so good. In this book we got to see more perspectives and it really helped me find new ways to love characters that I thought I couldn’t love anymore than I did. What I found most fascinating was the varying levels and ways the characters dealt with grief. Grief was definitely a pleasant sub theme of the story. I also realised (via the other perspectives) why I love our original FMC so much. And the fact that I didn’t realise until seeing her from other peoples eyes was also fascinating (in short I realised the way she was described was how I often feel described by other people, so thus I probably like her because I may be similar to her). We also got to see underneath Dacianas shell and view Langfords insecurities, both were interesting takes on characters we hadn’t seen those sides of before. I feel they were great characters to choose as alternate POV’s as they both showed (just as lark did) that they can be a hero despite their flaws, and that they may also be irrational and stupid because of them sometimes. I am curious if in the next book we’ll get more or less POVs. I’d love to connect more with the newer characters we’ve met along the way but I also didn’t really connect with them during this book so I’m conflicted.

In terms of the plot because we were split 3 ways I do think that hindered the pacing, we still mostly kept to the goals established but we ended up with a lot of side quests that pulled from the main story, which now that I know we have another book that’s less of a problem but it does mean that plot wise this book could feel like filler. Because I saw how much we and the characters were learning about themselves this book it still felt worth it to me. There were a lot of instances where the characters felt dumber than they should be for the main plot which was … honestly just a bit annoying, especially when you had a book nerd like Langford in the party, like how did he miss some of this stuff??? But I digress that is the struggle of books, sometimes we get annoyed lol.

The romance in this was spread out due to the multi POV, but I adored it regardless. The mutual misunderstanding because neither would open up, the pining, the fears. It was all quite beautiful to see real relationship problems reflected in the fantasy world. I even more so loved the theme of choice, are they choosing to be with me because they don’t know any better? Are they choosing to be with me because it’s easy? To me these are real insecurities we face in real relationships so watching it get worked through was quite beautiful. The “spice” was prevalent, but not explicit. I like to call it open door but sheer curtain style scenes. So you know what’s happening but everything is with vague terms (lack of acknowledging sexual organs). My only complaint is it felt like way to often the characters would go “I wanted to say *insert half of a speech about love” but instead I just kissed them” and this happened once or twice in book 1 but it felt like it happened a lot in this book which annoyed the fuck out of me. Wanted those heartfelt conversations instead of just avoiding talking by sex.

Overall I really loved this book despite it taking me a long time to read. Honestly being obsessed with the characters is carrying the story for me. I definitely do recommend this series but be warned it’s not done! I didn’t realise because there was no 3rd book listed on gr and this book came out 2 years ago but we have another book on the way (if the authors instagram can help trusted)

** I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, wow. I don't know where to start with this book. Earlier this year I had the pleasure of reading 'Songs of the Wicked' which is the first book in this series, and that book left me thinking about it for ages afterward. That's how you know it's a good one.
This story picks up where our band of misfits left off, with them going their separate ways to search for answers about the Witch Queen and the havoc she is about to unleash. So we follow three different POVs for the whole book, split between Lark, Langford, and Daciana. Before the three groups meet again in the middle of the book and rejoin forces, they each go on their own adventure with some heart wrenching moments. I powered through this half of the book, the pace was perfect.

What I loved most was the continued development of the relationships between these pairings. Lark and Gavriel have my heart, the most gorgeous couple I've read in ages and I was left devabsrted at certain parst of this story. Oh, the twists and turns! Alistair and Langford, the slow burn!!! My goodness but did it payoff? Oh yes. Again, the author puts us readers on a never-ending rollercoaster of emotions, and by the end of the book I was left breathless. Dac and Kenna were also amazing, and I loved how the Farran wove in Beauty and the Beast nod and also Red Riding Hood.

These aren't direct retellings, but the nods and whispers are there, and I'm living for it. I won't spoil but the end of the book gives a huge nod to the next fairytale retelling that'll be in the next book.

I can't say enough about Farran's prose, the world-building. It's made me want to write epic fantasy.
Enough said, buy this book. If you love cozy retellings, fight scenes, spice, LGBTQ rep, gods, monsters, witches and wolves then read this book.

I was so excited to read this book after the thrilling adventure of Songs of the Wicked but worried, nevertheless, that it would be impossible to follow up SoW with equal aplomb.

My fears are completely assuaged and I can't imagine a better plunge back into Farran's fairytale.

I am, admittedly, just shy of the end on this one due to the obnoxious crush of outside life but have been sneaking in reading every chance I can get - be it waiting in lines, waiting for the coffee or kettle to finish up, or while my toddler is absorbed in some Spongebob.

I am so in love with the increased focus on Daciana and Langford, especially Daciana. The dark, mystery-horror that attends her drew me in entirely and I can't believe how well she bears her past, all things considered. Langford felt particularly real, I found myself wanting to kick him a bit for his lack of self-confidence and then realized that I just hated recognizing myself in him. Obviously, Farran is a master at her craft to build such real characters, gather them all together, and then keep her readers following along, enchanted.

The world and voice flowed seamlessly from SoW and I was delighted to step back into this setting. The taverns and encounters along the road feel like a well-run campaign of DnD, right down to the camaraderie of the characters, and it is an honour to follow in their journey.

I was satisfied with the slow-burn and romantic arc in SoW and here there are not one, but three romantic subplots, each with different pacing, dilemmas, and flavour. I don't know how she's done it, braiding them all together like this, the perfect amount of romance to match the fantasy/adventure without the characters losing their heads and forgetting all about their important missions. Clearly Lark, Langford, and Daciana are all made of much stronger stuff than I, I'd certainly be letting the world crumble while I steamed up Ingemar's ship - which is conveniently back again for more close-quarters entanglement. Have to read back through and see if it is mentioned that it is a steamboat, because that would actually make a ton of sense.

I'll leave it here because I want to get back to reading the last little bit - perhaps I've been procrastinating the book hangover. I love this story. Love love love.

This one was really more like 3.5 stars but I'm rounding up because I think this author deserves more hype.

I was lucky enough to receive a free copy of this masterpiece in exchange for an honest review. So get ready for some honesty. I still have goosebumps on my skin and tears in my eyes, and I walk around my house, the grocery store, my office, vividly hallucinating about these characters. Songs of the Wicked was my favourite book EVER EVER EVER and now this? What the SH*T ARE YOU DOING TO ME, FARRAN??? The prose is ridiculously gorgeous, I was on the edge of my seat the entire ride, but, in the end, it was the characters who slayed me. I love them each so very much, they are like the family I never had but always wished I could bicker with, have Christmas dinner with, call when I break up with my stupid boyfriend. Dac is my older sister, wise and stoic. Lark is my little sister, always into mischief. Gavriel is her boyfriend, whom I pretend not to like, but secretly melt when I see how happy he makes her. Langford is not family. He is sexy. The end. Anyway. The point of this rambling mess of a review is that this book blew my mind, and I am FOREVER UNDONE. SEND ME BOOK THREE, FARRAN!

Lament of the Wolf is the gorgeously written sequel to Songs of the Wicked. In particular, I was so glad to enjoy the development between Langford and Alistair, my heart. What stands out to me with C. A. Farran's novels is her ability to confidently weave words without over-writing. In this way, her books remind me of staples of classic fantasy such as The Last Unicorn - not necessarily due to the content of the plot, but the cosy, dreamy, fantastical quality of the worldbuilding and writing style that sweeps me away to another kind of world. This is a rare quality in contemporary literature, and I'll always be looking forward to more from this author. As always with reviews for sequels, I find it difficult to express my thoughts fully without spoiling everything that has come before, so they tend to be briefer and less effusive than I would prefer since I have to restrain myself (lol), but I can highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys lyrical storytelling, low/dark fantasy, or fairy tale retellings.

How can I possibly describe how this book has made me feel? How does one sum up an adventure so visceral and achy and poetic? C.A. Farran's prose is evocative and understated. It slips into your heart without notice, and by the time you realise it's there, the damage is done. I will never be the same again. And now that I've said the author's prose is understated, may I contradict myself by saying she writes lushly? And that the brushstrokes which form Lament of the Wolf are a composite of heart-rending and spine-chilling? But, oh, there is warmth. And there is compassion. These characters are flawed and beautiful. They ache, they burn, the deceive, even themselves. I have read it four times now, and each time it takes another piece of me. And gives so much in return.

This was the long awaited follow up to Songs of the Wicked.

Where Songs of the Wicked was a slow burn romance with a lot of world building, this one was fast paced with more action and plot development and heavy on the romance with a few explicit spicy scenes with the relationships established in Songs of the Wicked.

This book is for fans of:

🐺 Fated Mates
🐺 LGBTQI+ characters and relationships
🐺 Magic, Werewolves, Witches, and Demons and Reapers
🐺 Little Red Riding Hood, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and The Beast retellings

Fair warning, you absolutely need to read Songs of the Wicked before Lament of the Wolf and this one does pave the way for a third book.

This book is peak romantasy. Such a fun book, I devoured it in a day even though it’s kinda long. If you’re a fan of other romantasy but take issue with massive plot holes and world building issues of some of those other stories, then this is the read for you. The pacing was pristine, each character got so much page time, and the twists—even though foreshadowed—weren’t entirely predictable. Overall I had such a great reading experience that I ordered special editions of this one and the first book. Can’t wait to devour the next one either (and potentially buy multiple copies if needed)
