Dragon Soup: A cozy fantasy mystery

Rate this book
Plain version; for the illustrated version, see the author's website.

When Perrin was so desperate that he applied for a job with the Bureau of Magic Abuse, there were two things he didn't realise. One, that he might actually get the job and two, that it would involve working with magic sniffers.

And what an annoyance the creatures are. They keep him up at night, need to feed on expensive fresh fruit and cause him embarrassment.

A new inn opens in town and patrons flock to it. Perrin checks it out for forbidden magic, finds none but something doesn’t add up. Is it the stranger, clearly a wizard, who makes little effort to cover up his illegal activities? Is it the owner of the new inn, who can’t possibly have accumulated enough money to buy the place? Or is it the unfailingly raving reviews?

Something fishy is going on, and his boss at the Bureau doesn't even want him to investigate. But Perrin has never let that stop him.

This book was not what I expected, in many ways. I have quite enjoyed other books by this author. I stopped reading after getting into chapter 3 for a number of reasons. Swearing (3 instances of the D word), and spelling and grammar errors (7) by this point. I was surprised to see a homosexual relationship… especially when reading it to my 9 year old granddaughter. I didn’t appreciate this blindside. It sounded like a cozy mystery, and the cover and description led me to think that both I and my granddaughter would enjoy it. It’s definitely not a kids book though - it talked about “whores”, although it was not descriptive. The plot seemed ok.

I wanted to like his book, but didn't. The first problem is that they show me an MC and the author wanted me to feel sorry for him even before I knew him....how can I care about someone I have no relationship with? Also, the whole not having any money is ridiculous, if he were the administrator...you should have been money savvy. Therefore, since the story started with all of these issues, I was not able to ever care for the MC, and the main story was shadowed by the personal stuff. Not for me. On to my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

This could easy have been 4 stars if you like straight to the point, no twist plot with a cozy easy to read languish. The story is fine, the character is fleshed enough out that you understand him, and his "love" life is only mentioned. It is in no way a LGBT focused story or a romantasy.

It's a classic story about corruption, power, and people not being that smart. If you need a book where you dont have to think to much, this is a decent candidate. But the audibook version is with a grating story teller voice by Patty Jansen herself. Sorry Patty.

self published book and it feels like it. Too much repetition for such a small book.
I was attracted by the book because of dragons (always go with dragons). I thought the story was interesting, a bit different.
The main character is a bit annoying at the beginning but gets interesting around the end of the book or when he starts really investigating.
It's cute but it could be better. And I know it has sequels but I am not that invested in the character to see how his story ends.

Delightful
This takes place in a town where there is not supposed to be magic but low and behold there is lots of it. How was it discovered? Read and find out.

Easy to read book. Nicely spun tale, definitely aimed at the younger readers, but still an enjoyable read. (After all - it has dragons in it 😍) About to start the 2nd book (Whale Mail now)

Cute little mystery. I found some of the dialogue and writing a little over-done, but still a cute book.
