An absolutely gripping book that had me hooked right from the beginning. It's a compelling story and I hope it's not long until the next one is published. A brilliant read.
First book of what is a new series. The writing is good and vividly tells the story of the disaster as it unfolds. I did wonder that where the Port group under Clint had been drilling/reviewing earthquake protocols, that possible tsunami was not part of it. It was later stated that it was not considered a likely risk, but the Oregon coast as well as the coast of SW Washington, has tsunami warning and evacuation routes posted. Also at the point they can see the wave, the chance of actually outrunning it in a truck is a movie thing, but not likely in real life. Nonetheless, the story was exciting and a very good start to a series.
Up all night. Reading. I couldn't put this book down...earthquakes, tsunamis, mud slides and
a mountain lion, kept me reading and holding my breath! What a great book! A fantastic adventure thus far...I am looking forward to the excitement book two will bring. I totally enjoyed this story and can't wait to discover what happens next..now on to book two.
Oh my goodness! Another FANTASTIC Survival Thriller series!
Father, Mother and Daughter all fighting to survive and find each other. The things they’ve been through are horrific, and I’m sure there’s more to come. I already ordered book two! This is a fast paced series that is impossible to put down. I totally flew through it. Highly recommended!
Very disappointing having read so many positive reviews but I just couldn’t get on with this book and definitely won’t buy others in the series.
The concept is an earthquake and tsunami, all 3 family members are naturally in different locations during the disasters, so the story becomes about the father trying to find his daughter.
SPOILERS BELOW:
I couldn’t believe how unrealistic the book was, the dad is able to get away from the tsunami wave not once, but multiple times. The fact we’re lead to believe that he sees the wave coming, drives fast enough to get out of reach, where he then stops, gets out the car to run around and tell others the wave is coming and they must run, before he jumps back in the car, sees the wave AGAIN in the mirror and AGAIN manages to out drive it. Absolutely not.
Having finally decided he is safe and wants to look for his daughter, he then proceeds to help multiple other people on tasks (driving them or items places) before actually setting off to find her. Sorry but either your desperate to search for her, and people you don’t know can figure out moving around themselves, or your really not that desperate to find her? She meanwhile is managing to fight off a mountain lion?
The situations and characters were too unbelievable. Thankfully the book was short, honestly that’s the only reason I decided to finish it.
I live in the PNW. Everyone is aware of the threat of tsunami’s following the ‘big one’. All along the coast there are tsunami evacuation zones and hazard maps. Clint and his colleagues would have prepared for tsunami evacuation as well as earthquakes. Lots of other unlikely scenarios and poor research here - doubt the author has ever visited the area. It’s a B-movie disaster book, the action is silly, but the characters are likable and I did read to the end, even while rolling my eyes. It’s part of a series, so don’t expect a conclusion. I won’t be reading the others.
I liked that I could imagine the scenes and the switch between the different points of view helped to know the characters. For reasons I can't still comprehend, I'm attracted to disasters and apocalyptic stories, otherwise I might not have continued reading because it didn't hook me right away. However, I'm glad I kept reading as it turned out to be enjoyable. There are a few things I was not convinced in terms of feasibility, but I let it slide. One of those is what happens with Daphne, her companion and the 4x4 (I'm not being more specific to avoid spoilers). Thanks to this book I learned more about the New Madrid seismic fault. Give it a shot.
Reading this harrowing account of a massive earthquake on the Northwest Coast makes my insistence to never live anywhere near a major fault ever again seem brilliant. This is a quick read in a new series that doesn't leave you hanging completely, just enough to make you want to read the next one.
This was a really good book. Not too much interpersonal drama. Focused on the survival/disaster scenario. Realistic characters. Some of the scenarios were a wee bit unrealistic but not annoyingly so. I would like to say that a Vice President not knowing what a tsunami is doesn't seem realistic, but...it does.
But the errors. Quite a few missing quotation marks and things like that, but my favorite was "B-lining" (p97). Did you copyedit this yourself, Mr Tate? If yes, it's an impressive job for a non professional, but hire someone next time. Did you pay someone to copyedit this? Don't hire them again. It's not the worst I have seen, but it's still too many. B-line is nearly inexcusable.
The premise of this book was intriguing and initially captured my interest. However, the execution of the writing did not live up to expectations. The climactic moments lacked the anticipated tension, leaving me unsatisfied with key plot developments. Additionally, the unresolved storyline of one of the main characters at the conclusion felt like an oversight, rendering much of the narrative less meaningful. As a result, I do not plan to continue with the next installment. I believe that books structured in this way, which seem more like divided parts of a single story rather than a cohesive series, do not resonate with me personally. This writing style is not one I find compelling.
I stopped at 58%. I couldn't stand it anymore. I liked the character development right up until the earthquake. Does anyone realize how fast water moves? By all means stop and help random people before you try to get out of Port Angeles. And of course the roads in Bellevue wouldn't have any debris in them. The only story line I kind of liked was Mika. And even she spent way too much time looking for a cell phone, but since she's a teenager I forgave her. I like a book to have a beginning, middle and end. Not just a start and a stop. Not much substance here.
A devastating earth quake hits the west coast from near Canada all the way near California feels the quake, but the tsunami that follows is worse. An estranged family is caught up in the devastation. Is the father and daughter capable of finding the mother many miles away. It was a miracle the father and daughter survived, but they have to try to find her. Great characters, and the story grabs you from a few sentences in and its a terrifying read. Starting book 2 now.
I’m a big fan of post apocalyptic disaster books, there are so many out there. You never know what to expect. This one was not full of any extremes, But it was pretty good , and I enjoyed it. I found that I liked the authors riding style very much, and it was easy to read. The story flowed smoothly, and it’s always a good thing when the main characters are likable and you find yourself rooting for them. Nice vivid descriptions of the damage created by the earth quakes and tsunami. I will read book too.
I started skipping through this story. Especially when Clint saw the tsunami 100 yds away.....and escaped. Really?!! Those move at a few hundred miles an hour. No way,he'd have been dead in a second. Then, when the ranger Duncan helped him out, he left him on his own when it looked like trouble was on its way. Such gratitude...not! I can't recommend this book, nor will I finish the series.
You always hear if what if? This is a book of what if, told from a family of 3, each in a different location when major earthquake hits and a tsunami comes after. The author has done their history and homework on what occurs. There is sorrow and sadness in this book, the events with the teens was heartbreaking , but I know that could and has occurred in the past. Great read. Will be looking for book 2 of 3 book series
What would you do if one of the strongest earthquake hit on the west coast…right where you lived and worked? And if you survive the quake-how will you survive the resulting tsunami? We follow Clint as he manages to survive both and head out to the state park to see if he can track down his daughter Mika, who had left that morning for a weekend camp out with her Girl Scout troop. This is going to be one heck of a read!
Reading this book flew by fast like an action movie. The characters are relatable as one can’t help but wonder what we would do in that kind of disaster. It seems insurmountable. Hopelessness seems to be the realistic way to see things. Hope seems so naive. Do you need hope to survive? Maybe not. Maybe all one needs is the drive to survive. Just that primal instinct to make it.
Though big in scale, this is really a story of Mine and her family.
The background of this story (A monster earthquake, followed by an even more disastrous tsunami), the story is made small enough to understand by concentrating on the fate of one family. All you people who can't resist a happy ending, at least stand a chance of being pleased!
The descriptions were awesome all the way through, from the mountains to the cities to the earthquake, landslides and tsunami. Then there were characters emotions. And their experiences. There were times when I stopped reading for the tears. It was a fabulous read!
...with the rating, but may be not. This book is good, but seems "short" and by that I means everything happens very quickly. boom. boom. Boom. Earthquake. Tsunami. Lost daughter. Found daughter... Set up for book 2. The end. There is not a huge depth of character in these characters. Maybe that will improve in Volume 2. Respectively,
A good idea for a storyline, well put together and easy to read. Some good human nature reactions to the disaster and a lack of understanding the full extent of the situation. From the A-holes to complete idiots who will not listen and learn. Hope that #2 is just as good!
This was a pretty quick read. The action moved right along. The only criticism I really have is that I have seen this similar plot in many disaster movies. I was hoping for a good plot twist, but it never happened. I will read the next two books, hoping the twist will come eventually. Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised.
This was a quick read. You can see the scenes playing out and kind of know what’s going to happen but she does a good job of keeping you invested in the story line. It’s pretty terrifying imaging what this would really be like and makes you think how you could better prepare 😬
Quite a story. This is not some zombie nonsense or yet another EMP attack. This is what will really happen one day. So far, it hasn't devolved into yet another cliche of how hordes of people turn evil while a small group of good but resourceful people mount a desperate fight to preserve decency.
Borrowed this eBook with Kindle Unlimited on March 25, 2024, West coast gets hit by 9+ earthquake. Read Kindle book using Alexa audio asset. Family of three tries to reunite and survive. It is harsh but l am glad to live away from quakes and ocean floods in Minnesota, although tornados/storms/cold can be minor problems.
I enjoyed this book. It wasn't complex but the characters were likeable and the situations seemed realistic, it was well written and a good read. It was definitely food for thought about how quickly a natural disaster can occur and how unprepared we'd all be. I am going to read the next one as I want to see how the story unfolds.
This book was written really well and captured emotions in situations so well it made me tear up and actually think about how hard it is to describe how your feeling in deep sadness or fear. I can’t wait to read the next one. Thank you Harley Tate for such great grammar and just enough descriptive language to be unique but not overly complex.
The concept was good but I found it slow. I am used to apocalypse books to be fast moving and exciting. Don’t get me wrong, there was some good parts but not enough for a better review in my opinion.
