Multiple strange deaths. A smart killer. And a homicide investigator charged with tackling the case in this tense thriller. When a modern home in High Peaks burns to the ground killing the family, it appears as if the tragic deaths were an accident. But a gut instinct tells Noah Sutherland otherwise. Days later, a family at another residence is found dead under bizarre circumstances. A coincidence, or are the two related? As the calculating stalker dubbed The Smart Killer stays in the shadows and continues slaughtering ordinary families in their homes, the investigation shakes the small Adirondack town to the core. Once a picturesque northern getaway in Upstate New York, the county is now a gruesome scene of mass murder. After an anonymous message is left for Hugh Sutherland, suggesting the killer might target him, the case becomes personal, and Noah must bring the murderer to justice. As Sutherland and his team struggle with zero clues and more victims dying, Noah believes the key to ending the murders may lie in secrets that some would like to keep buried. With the killer watching, can Noah find the evidence to stop him, or will his father become the next victim? Another great jack Hunt book. I love his characters and found myself crying in this book on several occasions. Hunt's descriptive writing places the readers center front to all the action. As I grew up in upstate New York, it is a pleasure to revisit it with his excellent stories.
This is a solid installment in the series. I always enjoy the plots, but I question why the author feels it necessary to murder/kill everyone in the main characters life.
Surely, if a death is needed, a different character could be chosen.
That's the downfall in the series...like... "how many deaths is Noah going to deal with?"
The book was a fast read but I thought the plot needed more focus. At times it was dealing with the narcotics trade they were trying to stop, while at other times it was it dealing with the serial murders that were occurring. By the end of the book, not all my questions had been answered and I felt like I'd missed something.
Well this book really took me by surprise. Mainly because it starts slowly, but that is just to lull you into a false sense. I couldn't out it down, reading well into the night to finish it. Well done Mr. Hunt you have done it again.
Noah Sutherland is such a great character. He such a determined cop, trying to make sense of the senseless murders. What a great read.Keep them coming Jack Hunt. I can't wait for the next High Peaks mystery.
Just not my style. I am not a fan of books where you have no chance of figuring out the guilty; Emmett doesn't appear until about 85% through the book. Also not getting that so many stories were left unanswered and taking a quick glance at book #5 doesn't appear to show any answers.
