A collection of screenplays, or short plays, and poetry grace the pages of Sounds Like a Plot by Laura Ludwig. Peppered with illustrations to make the text pop and bring life to the stories within the pages, this book covers Ludwig’s writing career in different genres from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Originally published in 2002, it is interesting to review a literary mind from twenty years ago to see how it compares to influential literature in the 2020s. For the younger reader, references might be difficult to catch, but for those of us who are caught in the in-between it is an interesting review of our culture.
Ludwig is accomplished in her field as a playwright, actress and poet. Being on both sides of the stage is clearly evidenced in her writing. She understands stage directions as well as the soul of the actor themselves. She brings that intimate knowledge of bringing a two-dimensional character to life, as well as the labour involved in developing the same said character. Readers are sure to chuckle at her humorous scripts as well as think a little more introspectively when reading her poetry.
That being said, this is clearly a very niche book. It is not for everyone. A reader must have some basic understanding of theatre to not be confused by the stage directions and follow the flow of writing. The reader should also enjoy poetry, which is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you, as the reader, are prepared for this landscape when you open the pages, or app, then you will most likely enjoy what is written. Otherwise, there runs the risk of feeling lost and overwhelmed while reading.
If you are a reader who enjoys getting lost in ephemeral thoughts, who looks forward to being lost in the misty in-between of a script, then you must pick up a copy of Sounds Like a Plot by Laura Ludwig. The short plays are entertaining to read, and the illustrations scattered within bring the text to life. It is enjoyable to read the play as a whole instead of seeing only what the actors want you to see. It lends a different type of light. You must, however, take pleasure in this type of writing to really experience it. This may seem as a turn off to some readers, but those who look forward to these little niche finds are likely to find it difficult to put down.
