A heart-warming short story of friendship and love from the pen of bestselling novelist Judy Nunn.
When struggling young journalist Nancy buys a tiny rundown terrace in Surry Hills she knows nothing about the previous owner, other than the old lady died six months earlier.
But a dusty box retrieved from underneath the old wardrobe in an upstairs bedroom soon changes all that.
And the lives, loves and losses of Emily Roper and her best friend Margaret are tantalisingly revealed...
Judy Nunn (born 13 April 1945) is an Australian actress and author.
Judy Nunn's career has been long, illustrious and multifaceted. After combining her internationally successful acting career with scriptwriting for television and radio, Judy decided in the 80s to turn her hand to prose. The result was two adventure novels for children, EYE IN THE STORM and EYE IN THE CITY, which remain extremely popular, not only in Australia but in Europe. Embarking on adult fiction in the early 90s, Judy's three novels, THE GLITTER GAME, CENTRE STAGE and ARALUEN, set respectively in the worlds of television, theatre and film, became instant bestsellers. Her subsequent bestsellers, KAL, BENEATH THE SOUTHERN CROSS, TERRITORY, PACIFIC, HERITAGE and FLOODTIDE confirm her position as one of Australia’s leading popular novelists.
When Nancy's grandma, Rose died she left her ten thousand dollars and she was unsure of what to do with it. Friends advised her that she should buy a house although, Nancy wasn't sure if she was ready to take that step in life. But that's until she comes across a For Sale sign on a tiny terrace house in Surry Hills, Sydney. The house was in the worst condition and yet, Nancy was quite taken with the house.
The previous owner of the house, Emily Roper had passed away six months ago and now the family just wanted to sell it. Although friends and family thought she was mad in buying such a run down house, Nancy went ahead and purchased it. After moving in, Nancy soon realizes the house was in need of a lot of repairs. There were a few pieces of furniture that were sold with the house one piece is an old wardrobe in an upstairs bedroom. It is underneath this wardrobe that, Nancy finds letters that will reveal the lives of Emily and her best friend Margaret.
I really enjoyed this short story by Judy Nunn. A beautiful light and easy read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Another little teaser of a story from Judy Nunn, this one is more of a sentimental tale about the discovery of some old personal items found in a wardrobe which was left behind in an old run down terrace house in Sydney's Surry Hills, which had been recently sold to a young aspiring writer, as a deceased estate. This is a captivating and sentimental tale which relates the turn of events which led to this discovery, and how the new owner of the house was compelled to investigate the story behind the discovered items.
As usual, Judy Nunn has managed to cram loads of intrigue and anticipation into a few short pages, always just enough to satisy...but still leaving you wanting more.
This one will appeal to the sentimentalists and poets, and those with enough sense of curiosity to want to discover the story behind the story.
This is a beautiful short story. I don't normally go for short stories, but I purchased this one by accident. A happy accident it turns out. A woman finds a series of letters in a wardrobe she has inherited with a new house purchase. She becomes invested in the story of the previous owner and longs to find out what happened in her life. Very sweet.
Lovely short story about a journalist, Nancy who inherits money and buys an old terrace in Sydney. It is a deceased estate, where the old woman died six months previously. She discovers an old wardrobe that has been left behind. Inside the wardrobe are certain items that belonged to the previous owner. She also finds old letters that the old woman had received throughout her life written from her best friend. Nancy becomes intrigued with this woman's life. I loved this story and read it through to the end once I started it as I couldn't put it down, mind you it was a short story. Highly recommended.
