Sheffield, born in 1978, studied International Maritime Economics because foreign destinations have always fascinated her. As managing director of a Düsseldorf media company, she headed an editorial department and published numerous texts of her own. She then combined her passions for great (literary) adventures and outer space with her commitment to climate change by creating the Lumera universe. She is the founder of the #SciFiForFuture movement, which aims to raise awareness about the pressing issues of our time through fictional stories grounded in real-life issues and events. Sheffield lives with her husband and three children in Dormagen on the Rhine, between the cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf.
This was my first book from Jona Sheffield. She is an experienced author, so it isn't surprising that her writing is engaging and pleasant to read.
Sadly, the plot itself is a bit dull. The topic of AI is interesting, but this is probably the 1000st story about an AI going crazy, and it's really getting old for me personally. So I hoped that the author would add a twist to it, something to make this story stand out from all the other "mad AI trying to kill humanity" stories from books, movies and games - but sadly she didn't. There is no real plot twist and I already knew what would happen in the end when I was reading the first few pages. I really hoped that the book will surprise me, but sadly it didn't. The intentions of the AI aren't even made clear - which is reasoned by "I'm so complex and intelligent, you wouldn't get my intentions anyway" - which just seems like bad writing to me. She just straight up starts acting against her manifest at some point and it is not really explained why or how that is even possible. Also the "hacking" parts of the story were a bit... weird for me as an IT guy, to say the least. You really get all the hacker chliches you know from 90s movies. From all those code snippets "jumping around" on the display (what?) to the hackers being just some guys who are computer geniuses and - small spoier - just "hack the CIA", although they are behaving like careless script kiddies.
So I pointed out a lot that I didn't like about the book, but it is an easy and pleasant read, and it engaged me enough to read it through the end. So if you like the topic and maybe can get the book through some subscription you pay anyway, go for it, just don't expect anything deep or new here.
Very good book. Nearly accurate in every aspect. Only one little thing: Putting the mobile in flight mode won't help much. The audio recording could be triggered by that and once back online uploaded. Only turning it off would help. I really expected GAIA to stricke with that knowledge.
