The second graphic novel in the Grand Slam Romance series, Major League Hotties brings Mickey, Astra, and Wolfgang together again, but now they’re in a different league—the magical kind!
Astra and Mickey are celebrating the Belle City Broads’s epic victory over their archrivals the Gaiety Gals, but the party is cut short when their nemesis Jasmine Von Schitz reveals the shocking now that Mickey’s magical girl powers have been revealed, they can’t play softball until they obtain a Magical Girl license! Too bad there’s only one place to get the Magical Girl DMV in Berlin!
Mickey and Astra are in for the Euro-trip of their lives, navigating the Magical Girl League, their own steamy situationship, and a prickly reunion with the hottie whose heart they both Wolfgang Konigin. For Mickey to get their license and for Astra to renew hers, they’ll have to intern for the Berlin Grinders, and only a successful season and a glowing recommendation from their captain will get them there. Too bad that captain is Wolfgang and not all their new teammates want to see the rookies score.
A delightfully madcap romp filled with spellbinding softball, shady exes, and sexy shenanigans, Major League Hotties is another home run in the Grand Slam series from creative team Ollie Hicks and Emma Oosterhous.
More over-the-top sexy, soapy, and silly softball action!
The magical girls of the last volume have to travel to Europe to get the proper magical-girl certification paperwork completed to continue their athletic careers in the U.S.. As part of the process they quickly find themselves interning as benchwarmers for a team in Berlin co-captained by an ex and a scorned woman one of them stood up for prom. But getting into the game and passing the judging process are of course complicated by and intertwined with their relationship and communication problems.
But there ain't nothing that can't be solved with some action on the field and in the bedroom . . .
Humor and emotions and hilarious magical girl transformation sequences! I still haven't learned much about softball, but their relationship developments were perfect.
Snorted with laughter multiple times...mostly due to Mickey.
Lots of great laughs in the start, and then the relationship drama got going, and I’m just rooting for all these awesome women. It’s so fucking gay. And I love it. 🏳️🌈👩❤️💋👩🏳️🌈
Softball + romance + paranormal, this was never going to be my favorite book.
This said, what I liked: - the art, the art, the art. I loved it, it's so pretty, I loved the way it was majorly pink, that works so well. - the lesbian representation. Some of it was quite the caricature but mostly, it felt liberating and exhilarating.
For the rest, the story around sport and magical powers just wasn't for me but it's not the book's fault.
I liked this one a lot more! Still very Tumblr coded I loved seeing all the other magical girlies I think this one improved on the depth of the characters and had some good heart to hearts Very sweet and fun! Excited to see there is a new one coming out!
guys!!!! this was so fun!!!!! i think even better then the first one. i just love them,,, and i’m so glad it chose the only good solution to a love triangle. also it’s So funny and So full of character!!!
The second installment to my favorite magical girl/enby softball series absolutely holds up to the first installment. Now, with more jokes, romance, action, and drama! I seriously cannot wait for the final installment.
Dear god I loved this so much I barely have words. I’m making my wife read it immediately. The illustrations??? EPIC and PRETTY. The story? HOT and FUNNY! The characters!??? I LOVE THEM.
Wow. Relationally messy, incredibly lesbionic, very touching at multiple points, and all-around a real knock-out (heh) of a story. I loved the so many flavors of gay rolling around here too. The character designs were stunnin', hard to pick a favorite. I love also that you could get a bit of plot re: the side characters lives based on what they're doing with each other in the background of a frame. Just a real homerun of a book, ya know? (Alright, I'll stop.)
This book is also a super great exploration of a romantic triad, with a progression I'm fond of and pretty impressed by. I'm sure there are better examples out there because there always is, but for my interests, it was awesome and note-worthy. Hard to say which of the triad members I like the most (Mickey, Astra, or Wolfgang), I like each of their individual niches that they bring to the table. At the halfway point I thought I was going to end the book complaining about a relative lack of Wolfgang development (when compared to Astra and Mickey), but then of course the second half occurred and now I'm just touched and chicken tender. Could say more probably but I'm not sure that there would be a point.
This was a REALLY good follow-up and I'm stoked for book 3. This is also definitely a book I would go back to for studying purposes if I were looking for examples of good love triangles that transition into a triad. I keep trying to figure out what made it Work the way it did and maybe it's that .... other than 1 person in the triad being slow, the other 2 were very emotionally aware & accepting of their own feelings, so that made relational progress steady??? Good stuff.
Mickey and Astra have to go to Europe to get their magical girl softball licenses. There, they have to play in the magical girl leagues while dealing with Wolgang, who is an ex of both of them, and another girl with a grudge against Astra.
Continues to be naughty and funny. I honestly wasn't as into the magical leagues, and I missed a lot of the characters from the first book. The interpersonal drama was pretty good. I appreciate that the romance and drama doesn't end at the two characters getting together. In the real world, maintaining a relationship can be a lot more challenging than just starting one. Another book is promised and I'm interested in where this goes from here.
Plot was much stronger in this one and I was a bit more surprised with how it ended up going.
Artwork is so colorful and expressive and well shaded. It really pops off the page and comes alive.
As I said with the last one, there are still some issues with the technical aspects of the game (home team bats first on p. 125 and p.151, yet the home team bats second on p.183 and p.222, and there is a grassy infield on starting on p.79 as well through p. 118-130 and into the rest of the novel).
Wolfgang grew on me in this one and we learned a bit more about the magic girls and the backgrounds of a few characters.
I find it so random that the boarding school is in Switzerland and that they end up playing for the Berlin team. I just rarely connect German and baseball together, but this has been a fun mash-up of two things I enjoy. I also quite enjoyed all the German language dialogue in it.
The final book in the series will apparently come out in May, so I hope to get a copy soon. I'll be curious to see how they end the series because there are a lot of options.
I thought it couldn't get better, but Oosterhous and Hicks deliver a standout sequel. Artwork is dynamic and beautiful as always. Humor is on point as always, but a lot more character exploration, background and higher stakes. I found myself really rooting for Wolfgang and Astra here. The ending is perfection and represents a reality not often seen in comics, even LGBTQ+ ones. Love this story -- hard recommend!
Another incredible installment! I’m actually obsessed with this series and it will forever hold a soft spot in my heart as my first graphic novel series. Just like the first book, the story and the artwork are wonderful and I enjoyed every last second of reading it. Lesbians and softball will forever have my heart
The first book was amazing enough, but this took it to the next level. More magical girls. More hot queer softball players. More romance! More sex! Add a cute dachshund to the mix and what do you get! An absolutely amazing graphic novel.
I loved it so much, and was laughing out loud at various points.
