When it comes to short story books, I find there are always stories that are much more enjoyable than others. That was not the case in  'Welcome to Neverbury'. All the stories were quick, enjoyable, dark, and filled with the otherworldly. I loved that closer to the end that stories started to share bits and pieces of the previous ones. Neverbury is very Night Vale-esque, but maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much.

See. These are the kind of short stories I like. Ones that are all perfectly connected. Honestly, I would probably enjoy living in the town of Neverbury. It has everything a girl could ever want: serial killers, witches, ghosts, even a haunted house.

Each story was so atmospheric, I really enjoyed reading this.

A hard book to rate but easy to review. A collection of fun horror and cosmic horror short stories all centred around the same weird little village Neverbury. Characters are largely contained to their chapters but do show up in each others stories every so often.

But also, because it's all short stories, some of the really good ideas don't get filled out as well as they could and sometimes I found myself confused as to what the twist was or what had happened at all.

I enjoyed it overall but I don't feel right giving it a rating. The stories are generally in the range of 2.5 - 3.5/5 but not uniformly distributed.

Neverbury is a quaint English village with some interesting issues, ghosts, witches, hauntings and more oh my!
Sixteen chapters displaying all the strangeness and wonder of this coastal town.

A charity shop gets its staffing sorted, a postman who undertakes a service for the community, a politician evens the odds, a toy shop collects payment for a rare item, an inherited gift, an optician receives his sight, the local paper has a new, infamous owner, an otherworldly encounter, dreams of a house become real, a bell, a book and a candle, the beautiful game, neighbourhood watch, community service on the sea, a dog in the desert, a new sheriff in town.

I really enjoyed visiting Neverbury and hope to be able to visit again soon, If I can find my way back. Creepy stories with a fairytale vibe, such fun!

”That was the weird thing about Neverbury; it was a place where nothing ever happened, except for all the weird and terrible things that did.”

Welcome to Neverbury! Where readers can expect a spooky charity shop volunteer, a killer postman, a devilish politician (aren’t they all?), bumbling burglars, psychic grandparents, sentient houses, and other preternatural beings to delight the creepy soul.

This book is essentially a sinister anthology with a Hot Fuzz meets Stranger Things vibe. A small village that looks out for itself including some of it’s otherworldly residents and that completely appeals to my morbid sense of humour.

”‘I’m calling on behalf of the powers of darkness. We received your details after a routine summoning ritual was completed at your location?’
‘Holy shit,’ muttered James.
‘Excuse me,’ said the caller snippily. ‘We don’t tolerate the use of that sort of language to our operators. Just “shit” will suffice.’”

This is a short book with the potential to grow, adding to the folklore of Neverbury and the enjoyment of readers. This is less than 200 pages and is a perfect and spooky read for Small Book September!

Outstanding!

At first, I was afraid that the stories would be so short that they wouldn’t be satisfying at all, the book is after all, under 200 pgs.

I was utterly wrong. Every story had a satisfying conclusion, and served horrifying concepts with a sprinkle of humor and a dose of wisdom.

I loved every story, and I love the way they were interwoven and the way the outcomes in each story gently snakes into other stories, painting a picture of an odd little English town, which is decidedly, best left off the “Sat nav”.

The stories are a blend of Eldritch terror and familiar themes of witchcraft, Faustian bargains, and home invasion. I enjoyed the author’s writing style and use of language, the pacing for each story was perfect every time. And I really appreciate the last two stories, as they provide some terrifying answers to at least 1 burning question.

If you’re a fan of Grady Hendrix, Neil Gaiman, and Sir Terry Pratchett, you’ll enjoy this writer’s tone and writing style immensely. I actually hope we get a sequel or a companion novella telling us more of the fascinating town of Neverbury, as it is a place I have no desire to find in person.

I really enjoyed this one. The author reached out to me through Instagram and asked me to read and review this book. It looked interesting, and I loved it. It’s such a fun read!

I don’t know if you remember the Mitford Years books, but this book reminded me of those. Each story is about a different person from the town of Neverbury. The stories are very cozy, the townspeople are adorable and fun, but underneath all that, there’s a lot of sinister happenings around town. Each person featured seems like a run of the mill townsperson until you get a little closer.

Each story was fun, spooky, cozy, and delightful. I’d love to read more about Neverbury in the future. It was like if the citizens of Nightvale found themselves living in Mitford. Such a riot.

If you like horror, quirky, weird, and fun fiction, I really think you’d like this collection of stories.

What an absolutely rollicking good book! I have never read this author before, but I am so glad I 'popped my cherry' with these tales of Neverbury!

An excellent collection of dark and humorous stories from the village, great characters and great, twisty, endings to each part

More please, Mr. Lynch!

If you like dark comedy - welcome to Neverbury. It's a small seaside town with no police, a serial killing postman, a hotline to the Powers of Darkness and its very own sea monster.

The optician has dark secrets, the charity shops are at war, and this set of short stories by Chris Lynch develop a real sense of location-specific atmosphere. Lynch's confidence in wringing both horror and comedy from sometimes long and complex sentences shows a writer in command of all their powers, and this collection reads fast, despite hitting hard in pretty much every story.

For extra pleasure, go with the audiobook version, read by Terry Cooper. Welcome To Neverbury is an easy book to read silently, but out loud, the complex construction of some of the sentences and some of the horrors could easily be overwhelming.

Cooper's reading though is assured, rich, and delivers much more than your money's worth. As a voice artist, he can cover even the range of character that bring the comedy - and the horror - that Neverbury demands.

This is one of my Top 5 reads in 2023 so far. Here's hoping for a Return To Neverbury, sooner rather than later.

Welcome to Neverbury is an absolute hidden gem of a book, perfect for anyone who enjoys quirky, darkly funny, and somewhat creepy horror stories. Chris Lynch paints a vibrant picture of the seaside town of Neverbury — a charming little English village packed with secrets, supernatural weirdness, and unforgettable characters.

Each story can stand alone but also fits together to create a bigger picture of the town. You’ll come across postmen with creepy habits, mysterious immortals, and local councils dealing with problems way stranger than potholes. The mix of horror, humour, and small-town satire is pitch-perfect — think The League of Gentlemen meets Welcome to Night Vale, but with a real British flair.

Lynch’s writing is sharp, atmospheric, and full of surprises. Every story hits you with a twist or spooky reveal that sticks with you long after you finish. The pacing, tone, and world-building are perfect — this is one of those books that might make you want to move to Neverbury (if you’re brave enough).

Definitely a must-read for fans of dark comedy, supernatural mysteries, and fully fleshed-out worlds. Welcome to Neverbury is clever, creepy, and totally addictive.

This is less just a collection of stories and more a guide to the horrific and sometimes funny small town of Neverbury.

The author takes us on a personal tour of the bizarre, the mad, and the terrors which is simply daily life for the residents. I love weird small towns and this one fits right in there.

A serial killing postman who disposes of his victims in a rather unique way, the new owner of the local paper who is more than meets the eye, eldritch cosmic horrors which live above AND below, and some newcomers who are going to learn a lesson in proper Neverbury etiquette when it comes to the local community watch. These and other dreadful things are all included in the tour!

There's a great dose of humor sprinkled in these tales yet it never detracts from the weird going-ons of the town. Each new chapter starts innocently enough but, by the end, not everyone is going to be happy. And some never make it at all.

I highly recommend this one and prepare for a town where sat nav doesn't work, and an old handmade radio might tell the future. Definitely pick it up!

This was a book of short stories & normally, with books of short stories, I find myself finding at least one or two I don’t like, but this one? Not a chance. I loved them all. I did have a few favorites, (Dead Letter Office; Sell Now, Pay Later; A Design For Living).

This book was well written, and I did find some humor in these stories (I’m not sure if I was supposed to, or if I’m just totally screwed up in the head 🫣). Chris Lynch did a phenomenal job with the horror aspect of his short stories, and also painting a quaint little town of Neverbury, but with a weird vibe to it, too. The best way I can describe Neverbury is think Pleasantville with horror! 😂

If you love books of short stories taking places in towns with an old fashioned, weird, horror, 1950’s vibe to it, I highly recommend this book! It had me laughing during some stories while also cringing and eyes wide open with others! 🙌🏻👏🏻

A new author for me & a collection of short stories too, which I don’t usually read. Welcome to Neverbury - interconnected stories set in a fictional English seaside town.

If you like Stranger Things, Inside No.9, Tales of the Unexpected or even Black Mirror then this will be right up your street. Everyday tales involving a strident village council, demons, serial killers, immortals & haunted houses amongst others.
Some stories are very short & others involve characters already touched upon. Creepy dolls & an optician stand out for me, probably because I don’t like the former & I have a ‘thing’ about eyes.

A flowing writing style makes this a great read for this time of year & can easily be dipped in to when you have a few minutes to spare. Happy Halloween 🎃

Title: Welcome to Neverbury
Author: Chris Lynch

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5
(Rounded to 4 ⭐️)

Summary: Neverbury is a town full of sinister dwellings... old history running through its life force and policed by its citizens rather than authority. Neverbury is sure to have some one or something lurking in the dark.

Thoughts: I'm a big fan of short stories that work together to paint a picture and this collection does just that for the town of Neverbury. It really sets up the creepy atmosphere of the town's dark chaos. There is also a dark comedy aspect to these short stories which made for a fun and enjoyable read. Now that being said I did find myself wanting more out of each tale. Over all entertaining and great if you're looking for a lighter spooky read.

Neverbury by Chris Lynch is an exceptionally well-written book of short stories set in the fictional town of Neverbury.

First off, the world-building of the town itself is phenomenal, and I absolutely loved it. Secondly, the stories are all so good that it was hard to pick a favourite; each one had something different to offer. The writing style of the author is great, and it resonated well with me, which, for me, is one of the most important things when it comes to dark or horror stories. Each and every story had a great flow, and the pacing and tension were simply perfect.

This book was more like an experience, and I'd definitely recommend it to all fantasy and horror fans, as this book has so much to offer.

It was so great to get lost in the village of Neverbury. Part of what made the story so gripping to me was that this could take place in any little English countryside town. The quirkiness, the occasional horror, the true sense of community, isn't lost anywhere throughout the novel, and it was wonderful to see how each short story was its own separate tale, whilst still adding to the general perception and culture that was Neverbury. It reminded me a lot of Roald Dahl's adult short stories, where every tale ends with a hard-hitting moment, but also of Hot Fuzz where you have that absurdity where you feel like the only sane person in the room.

Genuinely brilliant and looking forward to reading other stories from the author!

This book was nothing like I expected it to be. It's so refreshing to read small stand alone stories every now and then. This book delivers on that and more.

In Neverbury, a small town off the map and the GPS somewhere in England the daily routine is very set and not up for debate. The difference from. Neverbury to a normal little village is that the routines are well, not quite normal as you will come to see in each of the stories throughout the book.

Each story is extremely well written and very gripping. The characters come to life very quickly and you invest yourself in each and every story straight away.

This book came up as a Kindle Unlimited recommendation and I'm glad I took the time to read it. You should too - you won't regret it.

a collection of short stories all taking place within an uncanny town called neverbury that is, roughly, a less whimsical, more sinister night vale. i.. don't know. i didn't hate this but i didn't find it all that engaging, and because it was so similar to night vale - at least to me - i found myself wishing there was some softness or lightheartedness to balance out all of the misfortune and violence and general awfulness of the various plots. i didn't think the writing was poor or that the stories were weak, it just didn't do a ton for me. there was a bit of fatphobic shittiness which i didn't care for, but that aside, i wouldn't discourage anyone from reading, even though it wasn't my jam. 2/5.

This tome appears from the gloom as the unlikely and strangely adorable lovechild of HP Lovecraft, Roald Dahl and the League of Gentleman. It's great!

The mix of the short stories here is magical, and I enjoyed the way they started referencing earlier stories later in the book. Picking a favourite is difficult because there are so many good stories, but I particularly liked "Sell Now, Pay Later" and "The Thing Below".

I listened to the audible version, narrated by Terry Cooper, he's clear and the audio is clean, so you can really enjoy the listen.

If you enjoy a dark sense of humour, this collection is for you. I would happily recommend this.

This is a collection of interlocking short stories about creepy people doing creepy things in (or being drawn to) a creepy town named Neverbury. Let’s just say…if you’re ever driving and you see the signs to Neverbury, turn around and head the other way.

The author does a good job of leaving the ending very open to make you wonder if the characters are what you think they are or if they are going to do what you think they are going to do. The open endings make you wonder...

My favorites that I would LOVE to read a novella or novel about are a design for living and Time and Tide.

I really enjoyed this!

The concept of short stories all taking place in one location really intrigued me, I love movies like that and this is the first book I’ve read utilising this. And it just worked so well.

Some stories I got on more with, as with any short story collection, but I was enthralled with them and the writing was fab, there were even a few that I desperately want another chapter of.

The world felt rich and full of life, the characters varied but never lacking, and I thought it was a wonderful collection overall.

Firstly I want to say if this anthology is not turned into a BBC TV series is the world is missing out.
Never have I laughed so much to myself while reading or found myself enjoying an audiobook version even more than the written.
Just as I thought one story was going to be my favourite the next one would leave me laughing and terrified all over again.
Chris Lynch delivers a masterclass in meshing dark-comedy with horror.
I highly recommend reading AND listening to Welcome to Neverbury.

4-4.5* - a wonderfully macabre collection of short stories all centred around the fictional village of Neverbury. This collection is ideal for anyone who enjoys the Welcome to Night Vale podcast or is a fan of things like Hot Fuzz or Stranger Things. The stories have real horror touches to them with very dark humour, genuine twist surprises in many and overall work as a cohesive and enjoyable collection. Highly recommend and hope for another installment in the future.

An excellent collection of short stories linked by the quaint but sinister town of Neverbury. The stories vary from black comedy to gothic horror, but they’re all enjoyable, and gave me a definite Welcome to Night Vale vibe. The author suggested in his introduction that there may be more in this series coming, and I certainly hope this is true, I’d love to explore more of this dark little corner of England.

This was an enjoyable book of short horror stories. I enjoyed the fact that each of the stories took place in the same town. It made it really interesting to read the different creepy things going on in Neverbury. I thought each story was unique and fun to read. I would be really interested in reading more from Neverbury!
