Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Oliver Twist and Great Expectations are also frequently adapted, and, like many of his novels, evoke images of early Victorian London. His 1859 novel, A Tale of Two Cities, set in London and Paris, is his best-known work of historical fiction. Dickens's creative genius has been praised by fellow writers—from Leo Tolstoy to George Orwell and G. K. Chesterton—for its realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterisations, and social criticism. On the other hand, Oscar Wilde, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf complained of a lack of psychological depth, loose writing, and a vein of saccharine sentimentalism. The term Dickensian is used to describe something that is reminiscent of Dickens and his writings, such as poor social conditions or comically repulsive characters.
On 8 June 1870, Dickens suffered another stroke at his home after a full day's work on Edwin Drood. He never regained consciousness, and the next day he died at Gad's Hill Place. Contrary to his wish to be buried at Rochester Cathedral "in an inexpensive, unostentatious, and strictly private manner," he was laid to rest in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey. A printed epitaph circulated at the time of the funeral reads: "To the Memory of Charles Dickens (England's most popular author) who died at his residence, Higham, near Rochester, Kent, 9 June 1870, aged 58 years. He was a sympathiser with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to the world." His last words were: "On the ground", in response to his sister-in-law Georgina's request that he lie down.

No pensé que me fuera a gustar tanto esta novela corta, pero ahora entiendo porque miles de personas le tienen mucho cariño a esta historia.
Cuento de Navidad me recordó que nunca es tarde para cambiar y que la generosidad puede transformar vidas. Es una historia sencilla, pero con un mensaje profundamente humano que deja huella.

Por fin he leído este libro, que era un eterno pendiente de mi lista. Y sin lugar a dudas, es una preciosa historia que tenemos que leer.
En la víspera de Navidad, el egoísta y avaro Ebenezer Scrooge tiene una única y fría noche para afrontar su pasado (y cambiar el futuro) antes de que sea tarde.

Sinceramente, la visita de los tres fantasmas la deberíamos recibir cuando lleguemos a un punto de la vida donde nos volvamos más antipáticos, egoístas, malhumorados, racistas, homófobos, malhumorados... Y muchos adjetivos horribles más. Porque mucha gente de la sociedad actual parece creerse superior en todo a los demás, creyéndose con el derecho de denigrar y maltratar psicológicamente a los que no son como ellos, y lamento decir que todos somos iguales. Todos comemos. Todos meamos y cargamos. Y todos morimos tarde o temprano.
Así que, tratemos de ser buenas personas, ayudemos a los más necesitados, y muchas otras cosas buenas más, pero lo más importante es que seamos felices.

Una lectura muy organizada, con cada visita dividida por capítulos. Es un relato poco extenso que nos lleva por el pasado, presente y futuro de Scrooge. Me ha gustado como resalta la importancia no sólo de la familia, sino también de los amigos, empleados, compañeros de trabajo... Quizás el cambio en Scrooge no es muy creíble, me falta algo intermedio que de mayor credibilidad a la transición pero bueno, al fin y al cabo, es un cuento.

Tenía ganas de leer este clásico de la literatura. La historia es bien conocida por todos. Pienso que es un libro que todos deberían leer una vez en la vida, sobre todo por la lección que deja al final. Muy recomendable y para degustarlo sobre todo en estas fechas.
