Heir to Frost and Storm

Rate this book
I needed this. I needed him. My mind was a storm, and I wanted him to take it all away.

At the prestigious and competitive Saylam Academy, Max trains to master his magic, surrounded by enemies who will stop at nothing to see him fail.

As he fights to survive, Max’s romance with proud, passionate healer Simion grows ever more intense. But magic still ties him to Camron Calzmir, the prince who seduced and betrayed him. While the enchantment lingers, even the slightest touch from Simion could tear Max apart.

To prove himself, Max enters a legendary contest that could win him the loyalty of a powerful, ice-breathing dragon. High in the mountains, he will face elemental monsters and vicious rivals. But these dangers are only the beginning.

When Max returns to find Saylam consumed by rebellion, it’s clear that even old friends hold dangerous secrets.

An ancient plan is falling into place. And if it succeeds, whole kingdoms will burn. To survive the war that is coming, Max must be willing to sacrifice everything....

Heir to Frost and Storm continues an addictive M/M fantasy romance series perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Elise Kova, and C.S. Pacat. Building on the slow-burn tension of book one, it’s packed with heart-racing steam, deadly intrigue, found family, and jaw-dropping twists.

Oomph! This book did a number on my already frayed nerves, scratching relentlessly at my book-angst-resilience like a feral cat.

Definitely NOT A STANDALONE, Heir to Frost and Storm is the second book in Alderson’s very intense, very compelling high-fantasy M/M series, Court of Broken Bonds.

Our protagonist, Maximus Oaken, has been through a world of loss and trauma already in his young life, burdened (or gifted) with newly discovered magic beyond the likes of the already formidable mages he now trains amongst in his new sanctuary at Saylam Academy, in the city of Wycombe.

He’s keeping secrets, and for good reason, because beyond the support of his mother and his dearest friend (and love interest), Simion Hawthorn, Max finds himself facing phantoms from his past and insurmountable scrutiny from the leaders and people of the very place he’s meant to call his new home.

Max has a hell of a lot to contend with, what with the secret weight of his legacy, the rebels plotting against Wycombe (the North) at every turn, a magic-devastating plague threatening to cause a pandemic, and his upcoming life-or-death trial to find a dragon egg during the barbaric Claim (think the Hunger Games and Threshing combined).

It’s a lot for anyone to deal with. But Max is also just a boy, longing for another boy—in the form of sweetheart protector and healer, Simion—and, good lord, do these two go through it just trying to find a way to be together that won’t literally kill Max because of a pesky unwanted magic-bond (from book one) that won’t f*ck off and let them be.

This story was very long, nearing 500 pages, and I’ll admit I felt it during the first half of the story, which was slower in pace and perhaps broader in telling than it needed to be. But, damn, the second half more than made up for it, locking into full gear around the time Max entered The Claim and not letting up in pace, excitement, trauma and reveals until the final page.

My heart was in my throat a handful of times and I definitely let out a gasp or two over a few of the losses Max (once again) experienced in his ongoing, emotionally-fraught journey to come into his own power and hopefully save and unite a kingdom in the process (no biggie).

Thankfully, the sweet, tender scenes shared between Max and Simion—scattered throughout the story as expertly placed intervals—really went a long way in calming my anxiety and warming my heart in all the right ways. At this point, I may be fairly smitten with Simion Hawthorne and his utter adoration and awe of Max, eating up their quieter moments with gusto and delight.

I can safely say I’m hooked at this point, fairly ravenous (and stressed-out) to find out what lies in store for Max and Simion in the final instalment of this grandiose fantasy romance trilogy, Heir to Dreams and Darkness.

***A special thanks to the publishers and author (via Netgalley) for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

‘Maximus Oaken. For you, I would risk it all.’

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book, but one thing is for certain - I was not ready for the tears that came with the ending. I was doing so good, I think I teared up once during an earlier scene, but that ending one really got me.

Something that continued from the first book is Maximus's everlasting suffering. THEY JUST WON'T LET HIM BE!!! Everyone wants to use him for their own gain, just when you think things might be looking up - WRONG, they're not.

There was a lot that happened here, from Maximus training, to the Claim, old & new enemies, his evolving relationship with Simion and some old family secrets coming to light. It's definitely just as twisty as Heir to Thorn and Flame.

However, it was a bit slow in parts, and I think that was my main problem with it. I was aiming to finish it much earlier, but didn't manage to because I was travelling, and partially because of the slowness.

Despite me loving the world and the characters, I found myself being less excited to continue reading each time I picked it up, compared to book one. It could just be second book syndrome though, so hopefully book three will pick right back up again.

I also am still not fully feeling the romance with Simion. We did get more of it this time around, and we got some steam too (for all of you that have been waiting for it), but I wanted more development. Or rather more development from Simion, because compared to Maximus he's kind of underdeveloped.

I am really looking forward to seeing how the plot will go from here, we had a lot of build up in this one and it seems like the final battle will be epic (and will hopefully include dragons!! I'm manifesting).

And I know there probably won't be much time to expand the magic system further, but I'd still like some more explanations. Max seems to be the most powerful when he suffers a loss, but I'd like to see him do amazing things outside of that.

3.5

I definitely liked this one better than the first. The writing in book one felt a bit juvenile for an adult book, but I felt like the writing in this one had really improved. The plot picked up where book one left off and I did like that we jumped right back into the action.

I enjoyed the addition of dragons, but I wish they played a bigger role in the story. I feel like we just brushed the surface of them and I would have liked to know more about the connection between the Mages and the dragons.

I also feel like there was a lot going on and it felt a bit rushed in places. I would have liked the plots to be pared back a bit so that I could become more invested in what was happening.

I did like seeing Max and Simion's relationship grow more and Leska was a fun addition as a side character.

Overall, I think there was a lot of potential, but I just fell a bit short for me. There were parts that I really liked, but it was just an okay read for me.

Thank you to Netgalley and Second Sky for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I'm upset, I'm furious!

😭😭😭😭😭😭

This turned out to be totally unexpected. Not even in my wildest imaginations could I have diluted how the story unfolds, and the ending... I wasn't prepared for that ending 🤯😖

This is the second book in the Broken Bonds trilogy and picks up shortly after where the first one ends. We see how Max is trying to make Wycombe his home and all the bumps he finds along the way.

Leia and the city council keep a very close watch on his every move and while he is not theoretically a captive, wherever he goes, someone is watching him.

Max is surrounded by hostility, forgive those who blame him for things he didn't do or had no control over and not even in his dreams can he find peace as wiei are plagued by nightmares, nightmares that we later discover are visions, a warning of what is to come.

Blood, death and destruction is what the future holds.

We learn that the South is riddled with Phoenix-possessed people and soon after Wycombe starts to be attacked by these people, and of course, everyone blames Max for everything that is happening.

Just like in the previous book, in this one everyone lies or tells half-truths or keeps vital information hidden and stays that way until the very end and that, among other things, was driving me crazy 😅😖

But of course, that mystery is what makes you can't put the book down.

The book is a roller coaster of emotions, which in my case were frustration and anger against all the characters, but I have always said that the success of a book and its author lies in the fact that what has been written can provoke strong emotions in the reader and believe me that Ben Alderson has masterfully achieved it with this book.
I think the third and final part of this trilogy comes out sometime in 2024, but I'm not sure if I'll read it.

Why? Well, first I must get over the death of my favorite character and find in my heart the will to forgive the author for killing him 😭😭😭

Screaming! Crying!! Throwing up!!! Oh my god, this book was amazing!!! There's more dragons, more trials, more horrible and wonderful things that happen to Max and Simion and Beatrice... Now in the North, who can Max trust? What of the bond with Camron? Will he be able to prove himself worthy of getting a dragon?! This book is so packed full of drama, it feels like you're constantly running, jumping, diving, changing directions, and there's just not a chance to stop and catch your breath! There's so many twists and turns, people who die but aren't dead, magic given and taken away.... This book really is a roller coaster ride—and I enjoyed every minute of it! There's more drama, more spice, more dragons, more characters; I particularly enjoyed Leska, she's really interesting!

A couple of things I need to mention though: The ending to chapter 13..... Literally, Ben, how dare you reach into my soul and tear out my heart and rip it to shreds like that?! Not even exaggerating when I say I was screaming!!!

Chapter 33... Dying, deceased, I am D E A D!!! And then chapter 34... I couldn't sleep, after reading this, seriously!!! I thought I could put the book down and go to sleep as it was 3am and I was shattered—but no, no sleep for me!!!

If you thought the first book was just okay and you're not sure about continuing this series, please PLEASE give this book a read; I don't know whether I devoured it or whether it devoured me, but one of those definitely happened as I've not been able to put this book down!!!! It's the kind of book where you think certain things are going to happen, and they almost do, or they do but then in the next chapter everything changes, and I can't wait to read part 3 to this story now!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5!

*Read as a digital ARC on NetGalley*

The moment I finished Heir to Thorn & Flame I ached for the sequel and it did not disappoint. Heir to Frost & Storm picks up shortly after it's predecessor ended and it is non-stop action and emotion from there. An emotional roller coaster from start to finish I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I swooned so many times I feel wrung out. I could hardly put this book down, it haunted me in my sleep.

Every mystery and question posed in the first book was met with answers that bred more mysteries, more questions, the answers to which were more devastating than the last in the best way possible. The relationships begun in the first book are fleshed out and deepened in ways I never dreamed would be real. New relationships were forged and tested... and in some cases broken in the best of ways.

Max and Simion's journey through book one and now through book two has been one of my favourite things about this book. Simion's devotion to Max makes my heart warm in the best way. Max's struggles with his feelings for Simion while being still bonded to Camron made my heart ache for him.

And finally that ending... just like Heir to Thorn & Flame, Heir to Frost & Storm ends in a way that leaves you aching for the next book in the best way. Court of Broken Bonds is an incredible series and I cannot wait to see how it ends in book 3.

Ben, your books are amazing, I have loved everyone I've read even when they make me cry. Thank you giving me the gift of this digital ARC to consume the last three days of my life. I wish I could give it more than 5 Stars, because it deserves it.

BEN ALDERSON DID IT AGAIN!

Heir to Frost and Storm is the sequel to one of my other favorite books of 2023, Heir to Thron and Flame. A book you absolutely need to read. This sequel was one I was begging for and Ben Alderson delivered in the best way!

This story picks up just about right where the previous book ended. Max is training at the Saylam Academy working to get stronger and master more of his powers. When an opportunity arises for him to enter into a dangerous trial to potentially bond with a dragon, he decides to enter. The results of this competition give him a dark understanding of the world around him. What happens next is pure wildfire as it rushes to the climax of the novel.

Ben Alderson writes thrilling fantasy, dark and steamy romances, and great magic systems. His writing is so vibrant and fun, while also building suspense and keeping the stakes high enough that you feel like you have to know what is going on. I loved this story and I know readers are going to love this as well. If you loved Heir to Thorn and Flame then this novel is going to satiate every thirst that was given to you in Book 1. This series has quickly become one of my favorite series and if you haven't started it.... GET TO IT!! :)

Now I just desperately need Book 3. (If you haven't already seen the cover, you're missing out!!) Check out this book and the rest of this amazing series by Ben Alderson. You won't regret it!

This book was rough. The only finished because I bought physical special editions of this series and felt like I had to so I would get my money's worth. The first 100 pages were so boring. It took me months to get through it. The previous book ended on such a high, then this one starts and it is just a bunch of nothing. Luckily, the story started to pick up at around the 100 page mark, but then it just became an infuriating read. You can only have so many back-stabbing reveals before they lose their novelty and just become annoying. I also struggle a lot to really connect to Max as a character. This is mainly because he is constantly being manipulated and led around, taking away all his agency. I understand that this is the point, that Max also wants more agency, but constantly having to read about a character get used by literally everyone around him is starting to get really frustrating. I did not enjoy this book, but will likely read the sequel since I made the mistake of buying the series before reading it first. On the bright side, Alderson seems to have no qualms with killing off characters, so hopefully I'll at least get to see a bunch of the annoying ones die.

As I am trying to write this review, I find myself without words. What can I possibly say about this book? I must admit though, Ben Alderson you've hooked me good. I've never hungered like this, never devoured a book before, like I did with this one. 100 points to Court of Broken Bonds Series!! (I hope you all will get the reference)

The beginning was slow, and almost boring, I dare say. So it took a while to get into it. To fully grasp it. But I would soon come to realize how addicted I was. Am. Because even now, after I finished it, it still lingers there, like a drug.

Maximus's journey this time was far more meandered and complex. He had to battle not only with Elder Leia, with her battlemages and novices, and eventually Elder Cyder, with his rebels, but mostly with himself. And with the legacy that was forced onto him basically. With his truths. And I must say, how he stood his ground against everything, it was motivating.

And then the growing feelings for Simion. Argh. That.... that almost undid me. It spread into me, like a fire. And the scenes together.... I have no words for them. Also, their chemistry was amazing. The chemistry of Simion and Max was far more complex and fitting, than the one he had with Camron. To me the feelings Max had for Camron were more like a case of Stockholm syndrome, than real love.

I mean, he was basically trapped. "Bonded" with Camron, but against his will. And then over time, some resemblance of "positive" feelings towards him emerged? Come on, that is clear as day. To me at least. Anyway. The point is, the feelings for Simion are real. And it was perfect, if I do say so myself.

I wish I can find someone like Simion in my life. I couldn't help but imagine myself in Maximus's place. I wonder why finctional men are always this great, and then after the effect of the drug is gone, we must face the reality... How men really are.

Now, enough with this blabbering about sexy and romantic and kind and careful and perfect men.... Enough!

I can only say thank you Ben, for writing this book. You truly did an amazing job! I am really excited to read the last book, though I am sad things will be coming to an end.... Alas in real life that's the case with all good things. They end too quickly. But I guess that's what makes them so special in the first place.

Max never gets to sit in his happiness. Some relationships are barely developed before Max starts to care deeply for them.

If you start at a 9, there’s barely anywhere to go. Also, if everything is important and the most terrible thing in the world, then is ANYTHING really important or the most terrible thing in the world? Ugh, it’s just, if the character doesn’t have time to breathe, then the reader doesn’t either.

World building? Very cool and interesting! Character development? Could have used more.

I enjoyed this book more than the first in the series!

As much as i enjoyed getting to know the characters and the world building in book 1, this one really hooked me in as we got to see a lot of interesting relationships develop!

I also loved the spice in this book. It was well written and the build up was great too.

The overall story is really interesting and gripping, I can’t wait to see how the trilogy ends 👀

This next section of Max’s journey to mage was a whirlwind. So much happened in this book I felt like had read three books within one. We start with our MMC fighting to prove himself to the people that call him the traitor mage while trying to figure out who exactly he can trust in this new land.

I really liked the challenge portion of this book even though it broke me for reasons I will not spoil on multiple levels. This was a great distraction from the goings on in the city so that we could return to discover the level of chaos the elders had created from infighting.

The final part of this book was full of rebellion and backstabbing. I did not see the return of one character coming but redemption can come in many forms. The final scene of the book reveals an earthshaking secret as well as a heartbreaking ending for someone dear to our Maximus.

Hello! I have finished this interesting book! Here are the reasons why I gave it three stars. Great overall story, good characters, good writing, held my interest. I like this book! Don’t love it. Here’s why I deducted the two stars. There were quite a few times where the writing faltered or the grammar just wasn’t there. I don’t judge Alderson for this because his writing was great. It was things that an editor would normally remove or have changed and that would be a great help for this book! But each time, I was removed from the story and left trying to decipher the error in my head. If you don’t mind that, it’s a 4 star book. The next reason is just that this book moved SO quickly. Readers were given no time to settle into any plot point and there were dozens! Just when you get to know a character-dead or gone. Just when you get into a setting- moved immediately. It’s things like that that just kept me from really enjoying this book to the max. I sensed that in the first book but it wasn’t so extreme as it is here. The last thing was that it seemed to be a masochist’s dream. Every single chapter it felt like Maximus was getting screwed over or more traumatized. Give the guy a break! But overall, it was a fine read. I will probably finish the series out.

(I was given an ARC of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.)

Heir to Frost and Storm picks up a little after the end of book one and takes its time with the events for about 300 pages and then picks up the pace a little at the end.

I can't say that book one was special to my tastes, but it kept me up enough to want to know where book two would take things to. But book two, while some chapters towards the were a little more exciting, just had me questioning if I liked fantasy or not.

I still like fantasy, and this was a fun read, but it just made me realise that Alderson's writing isn't for me. The story and the characters have a very early 2010s fantasy feeling to them, and it doesn't fit me anymore. But I really like the queernormative world despite all. But Max felt like a classic fantasy main character, despite me liking his traits in book one, and it stopped feeling enjoyable to me. Simion was great, but I didn't see much the connection between them in the first half of book one, and this time, it didn't feel as strong either.

I could guess certain events by the end of book one, and it took 150 pages for the characters to think of the possibility and another 150 to actually do something about it. The book dragged out a little too much. I don't feel excited enough to read book 3 as I was burnt out by the mid point of book two.

Before I begin i would like to thank NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to review this arc.

This wasn't the type of book I would normally read but I actually quite enjoyed it. The characters were fleshed out brilliantly, I enjoyed the setting too but it was the plot and pacing that was the downfall for me. The characters were enrapturing but often the pacing felt off and I felt like the book could have been shorter. I just want to say, if you enjoy a slow burn romance with a leisurely paced plot, then this is perfect for you. Unfortunately, this exact combination of characters and storytelling just did not speak to me.

Nonetheless, the book is objectively well-written and I did enjoy it, simply wasn't to my taste.

There's a quote in this book that stuck with me the moment I read it "Hope was a strange thing. It was a double edged blade. Hope either gave someone something to fight for or reminded them they had something to lose".

My goodness a truer statement has never been written. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The relationships between the characters and the conflicts. This war will not be easily won. This is not over. I personally can't wait for the next book. Thank you to Ben Alderson and Netgallery for allowing me to read this book.

Thank you to the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This felt like old school high fantasy in all of the most delightful ways possible, but with the added bonus of making it queer. Magic and smitten boys and overly-protective dragons and destinies to embrace or defy!

Following close on the heels of the tragic attack that killed his father and destroyed large swathes of his new home of Wycombe, Maximus Oaken is just trying to survive the fallout. No one in this new society trusts him except for Simion Hawthorne, and for some reason they can barely touch without it hurt Max - which should be impossible after he saw his husband die and end the ritual bond that forced them together, right? But worse, rebels continue to attack Wycombe and a burning plague is spreading up from his original home in the South, and it will soon hit a little too close to home right as Max is forced to abandon everything to adventure through the wilds in fierce competition of a dragon to call his own.

One of the greatest joys of following Ben Alderson's books from his earlier works to now is seeing how much he has grown as an author, and it is ever more apparent in Heir to Frost and Storm. I hesitate to call it a fun book, necessarily, because it hit on a few topics that felt a little close to home given the general state of the world over the past few years, but I meant it when I said that it felt like one of those old school fantasy books that we all grew up reading and adoring.
Max is the quintessential fantasy hero, born to a great destiny but raised from nothing and fighting to find his way in the world. My complaint about him in the first book was that he was largely too wishy-washy about his wants and feelings, so it was great to see him finally have things he wanted to achieve and protect and actually stand up for himself throughout the course of this book. He grows throughout the story and by the end, leading into the finale coming with book three, we can see a genuine fantasy hero rising.
Simion is just a precious bean of a character. I don't know how else to put it, y'all. He's sweet and needs to be protected at all costs. He's just the perfect fantasy love interest of old; magical and supportive and mostly just there to be good for Max. I'm excited to see where his story goes with the finale because he is fun.
Leska and Bea and all of the other secondary characters also get their time to shine in this book. As with book one, it's hard to know who to trust throughout the story because truths and alliances are constantly shifting, but I found it much less frustrating this time around because at least we had a set Big Bad from the very beginning. And it's fun seeing how it all ramps up to that reveal at the end, leading into the final book!

I'm genuinely excited to see where the next book goes (and with that stunning cover to boot!) and to see how Alderson continues to grow from here.

A fantastic sequel to Heir to Thorn and Flame.

Frost and Storm's plot is action-packed - sometimes a little too fast paced to be honest. I felt like the Claim in itself could have been a full book, and I'd have loved to see more of Dayn's character. I love a training montage, and Maximus' training with Leska could have been fantastic development for them both in the run up to the Claim. I enjoyed it, as it was, but I would have loved some more build up. It was great to see some more depth to the characters - we learn a lot more about the motivations of Leska, Beatrice, the rebels, Camron and Leia and it really helps cement those characters as people in Maximus' world.

The Camron, Simion and Maximus love triangle continues as Maximus finally confront his feelings for them both. We get a little more of Camron's backstory following his rapid character shift in book 1, and book 2 does a much better job of showing the conflict in Max as he tries to untangle his feelings around Camron and his book 1 betrayals. I hope we continue to see this as the series progresses, as it really showcases the humanity and ordinariness of Max. He doesn't always know his path, or understand his feelings and this is a refreshing change for a fantasy hero, as he tries to understand his place in the world.

I absolutely love the Phoenix depiction. The mythology of the phoenixes and the fire plague in book 1 were a unique take on the creature, and it continues to develop into a full rounded history and mythology. The addition of the Naiads in book 2, and the confirmation of the 4 gods (Naiad, Dryad, Dragon and Phoenix) origins was great. Looking forward to what comes next!

Thanks to Second Sky, Ben Alderson and NetGalley for the chance to read an advance copy in exchange for an independent review.

I hate to DNF two books in a row, but I’ve been trying to read this book almost all year and decided that if I’m struggling this much to read it, it’s probably not worth forcing myself to read it.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and was just really struggling with this second book. I had quite a few problems with it that I think made it hard for me to read through personally. My main thing was that I was really starting to hate the main character. I already was not really liking him from the first book but I really grew to dislike him in this book. He seemed to be using the only nice character in the whole book and still spent the whole time just saying, “Woe is me. Everything is horrible and everyone hates me except Simon. I can’t live without him!” It was really starting to drive me mad.

Also, the plot was starting to get confusing and felt like it was beginning to contradict itself. I swear we killed the bad guy in the last book. We had a huge crazy final battle scene. So how come, all of the sudden, he is no longer dead and supposedly whispering in the MC’s ear. Not like, “Oh no. He has PTSD and is haunted by the man he killed” no like, he is actually still magically connected to him and is not dead and is manipulating him still. It felt like it was dragging out an unnecessary plot point. It got too boring. It also had a level 3 spicy level.

Overall, I would give this book a 2 out of 5 star rating. I’m not sure if I’ll ever finish it in the future but for now, it just doesn’t feel worth it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Second Sky for a copy of Heir to Frost and Storm in exchange for an honest review.

I love Ben Alderson's Darkmourn series, so I was really looking forward to this new series from him. Unlike Darkmourn, which was a series of stand alone stories, Court of Broken Bonds is a chronological series following the same characters. I enjoyed the first book and was eagerly awaiting the sequel, it did not disappoint.

Heir to Frost and Storm picks up where the first book ends. We continue to follow Max as he attempts to cope with the loss of his father (who wasn't really his father) and the truth of his mysterious birth. Add to that, the silver mark representing his bond to Cameron has not faded, despite watching him die, and his quiet pining for Simion, the gentle gleamer he can't stop thinking about. As ghost from his past continue to haunt him, and monsters from the South follow him North, Max has to decide who is friend and who is foe, and what side is he truly fighting for.

This series has been action packed, suspenseful, and utterly devastating at times (there was one death in this book that hit me hard, I'm sure some could figure out who's). It is also achingly romantic, with Max and Simion's slow-burn relationship beginning to heat up, despite all the obstacles in their way.

Heir to Frost and Storm was an entertaining sequel and I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

After the disaster that struck Wycombe and killed his father made Maximus' life even more complicated, he searches for ways to find his place in the society he entered. Maximus decides to enter the fierce competition that decides whether or not a Mage is fit to bond with a Dragon. But when a fiery plague spreads through Wycombe, it's the last thing on his mind. Suddenly, Maximus is even less welcome and his most beloved people are in danger. And most worrisome, Maximus isn't sure his deceased husband is as dead as everyone says he is...

This continuation of the Court of Broken Bonds Series picked up shortly after the end of Heir to Thorn and Flame. It started out action packed and it DID NOT STOP. I literally felt like screaming when I finished it. Like most of Alderson's books, this installment in his new series was captivating and thrilling, surprising me over and over again. The romance was to swoon over. The forbidden aspect with the you're-all-that's-keeping-me-sane thing. *dying*
It was also hella twisty. Maybe I'm dumb (if I am, in this case it's a virtue), but I did not see either of the major twists coming. Also, Anderson has once again ripped out my heart and stomped on it (Thank you)

The book opens after the events of the previous novel, Heir to thorn and flame which I would highly recommend you read that first. We see Max struggling with his grief and the secrets he's still keeping. People around him treat him with disdain and suspicion, so he enters The Claim to try and prove his worth. The moment he enters, things start to go wrong, and it turns into a battle for survival.

As I've said before, I don't read a lot of fantasy, so I wasn't sure what to expect with Heir to Frost and Storm, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's packed with the same magic, mystery and romance as the first but takes it to the next level building on the first book.

What I enjoyed about Heir to Frost and Storm was the twists and turns throughout. There were plenty of times where I thought the story would go one way, then went in a different direction. It really kept me on my toes.

Whew! The chemistry between Max and Simion was off the charts in this book. I liked the fact that even though there were plenty of steamy moments, there were also some tender moments to really show the deepening of their relationship.

All that being said, I felt the story started off slower than the first and took a little longer for me to really get into.

If you like your fantasy with dragons, magic, mystery and some spice thrown there too, I would highly recommend this series to you.

While I did not read the first book in the series, "Heir to Frost and Storm" by Ben Alderson still managed to capture my attention with its intriguing premise and captivating characters. The steamy MM fantasy romance between Max and Simion was intense and passionate, keeping me invested in their relationship throughout the story.
The magical world of Saylam Academy was richly detailed and full of danger, with Max facing enemies at every turn. The addition of elemental monsters and a powerful dragon added an exciting element to the plot, keeping me on the edge of my seat as Max fought for survival.
However, I found that the plot became a bit overwhelming at times, with numerous twists and secrets revealed that left me feeling slightly confused. I also wished that more background information was provided for readers who, like me, did not read the first book in the series, as I felt a bit lost in the world-building. but again this could be completely my fault not not reading Book 1.
Overall, "Heir to Frost and Storm" was a fast-paced and gripping read that kept me entertained from beginning to end. Fans of M/M fantasy romance will likely enjoy this book, but I would recommend starting with the first book in the series to fully understand the story.

Sometimes, we don't know what we are fighting for, until it's taken from us.
oh, this book. the 👏🏻 plot 👏🏻 twists 👏🏻. the way Ben writes is just... amazing and breath taking if i'm honest. the way Maximus has to bend, adapt to and overcome everything that is being thrown his way. mind blowing.
i loved loved loved that i couldn't predict any of the twists this time. and i love how this book left me speechless, multiple times, without mercy. unfortunately for me and my sanity, i could also foresee some of the things that happened, especially in the end. and yup, they made me tear up. 🥹
i also love the way Simion loves and cares for Max. it's... different than Camron's love. where Camron was passion and drive, Simion is patience and steadiness. i just hope their flame will survive whatever's coming for Aldian in the third volume. though i'm pretty sure Max's new family can outlast everything that's gonna be thrown their way. always.
definitely a 5 ⭐, if you haven't already, please pick up this series because it. is. phenomenal. period. ❤️‍🩹
anyways, gonna start counting the days until the release for the third volume bc this story's got me absolutely feral. 👹

So ingave the forst book a 3 and I think that was generous, but this genuinely geta a 4 from me based on the last being a 3.

Much better than the first saga. There's ALOT going on. Like it probably could cut back on the cacophony of back and forth bit it was still good.

2 things - page 363 we meet Camron again and we do well mentioning his stump and talking about it, but then for like 2/3 subsequent pages we are reading about his "hands" and I just couldn't help but laugh at what was probably supposed we to he a devastating moment. 😅😅😅

Second thing - this line killed me inside. It just spoke to turmoil and I absolutely loved reading it I had to scan it on my phone amd save it to notes.

"How can I be what you need, when one wrong touch causes you immense pain? How can I possibly stay close knowing I can make you suffer? What happened back at the Mad Queen, it has haunted me. Every day, every hour, every fucking second. Your scream rings in my skull, but it was the silence after... that will never leave me. I want to be the one to bring you peace, not suffering, Maximus."

All in all, was miiiiiiles better than TCOBB Book #1 and I am glad I didn't DNF.

ARC REVIEW
.
Here we are again, review for Ben Alderson's book and I am here like *insert keyboard smash 😂*. There was so many things happening! Why and I repeat WHY do they have to suffer almost nonstop throughout the whole story 🥹. If I had to survive just one of the things Max had to go through I just wouldn't 😂...
.
Now on more serious note. Wow! There are many second in trilogy books that are just not it. But this one was different. There's nonstop action, you don't have even the slightest chance to get bored while reading. With the action you get to see world building, more dragons 🐉, some new characters and more of Maximus' relationships 🥰.
.
The only thing I would like to say about characters - you just Can't trust anyone in this book, believe me 😂... I was extremely paranoid the last 150 or so pages. I was so sure everyone had ulterior motives.
.
And now Simion... Oh how I love Simion 🥹❤️. I loved to see them together and happy (at least sometimes) and what more can I say? He is a catch ✨.
