A royal tomb. A cryptic message. One chance to reveal the truth and change history. Harry Fox is after the man who ripped his family apart. How can he get his revenge? By tempting the man with a relic he can't refuse. But fate intervenes when an earthquake reveals the tomb of a Thracian king. A tantalizing missive in the tomb pulls Harry away from his quest for revenge and launches him on a perilous chase to uncover the truth behind this Thracian mystery. Except Harry isn't the only person racing through the past. Harry follows a treacherous path across ancient Thrace as a mysterious adversary closes in. What Harry discovers will reveal the truth behind one of history's greatest warriors - if he can survive. The Thracian Idol is the latest pulse-pounding archeological adventure in the best-selling Harry Fox series, perfect for fans of Indiana Jones, Sean Wyatt and Dirk Pitt.
Andrew Clawson is from Pennsylvania and fervently hopes the Pirates win a World Series in his lifetime.
He is currently writing two series.
The Harry Fox archaeological adventure series involves a Pakistani-American who chases artifacts for the Italian mob. He’s a man caught between two worlds, uncovering history’s greatest treasures while carving out his place in the world.
The Parker Chase series follows a daring banker who unravels forgotten historical mysteries while outpacing modern villains intent on using the past for their own nefarious purposes.
The TURN novels reveal the exploits of a former American big-game hunter turned conservationist who battles to save his adopted African homeland from being ripped apart by greed and violence.
Andrew lives near Pittsburgh with his wife, two young children and a rescued black cat.
This adventure story is both an adventure and a learning experience. The location of the story is the ancient country of Thrace; which, back in about 1 BC to 46 AD, encompassed parts of modern day Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. The location of the story is intriguing. I would characterize the story as similar to the novels written by Jules Verne, where the basic locations, dates, and some characters are factual and true, but some characters and story are fictional. This is a fun way to learn a little history and be entertained. Andrew Clawson has a talent in writing action scenes and has put together an interesting and complex story. The background information for this historical fiction book has been adequately researched. The characters are unique and complex, with good and bad aspects to their personalities and backgrounds. They seem to be real and not stereotypes. There are mysterious puzzles, codes, explorations, secret hidden places, and traps. Harry Fox and his friends must meet these challenges toward finding lost relics and books by using their own (not part of the government) counter-espionage, wits and physical strength. This particular story seems to be a bit more edgy and thriller than the previous ones. Can the book be read as a standalone novel? Yes. The story does have a twist at the end with a conclusion that wraps up the story. Improvements could be made to the book. The author has an authentic and unique style of writing. Some editing could assist in the writing of the book to result in a smoother read, but there is nothing too distracting for the reader. I received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) for my honest review of the book.
Some locations/settings: [France: Corsica, northern rural France, Paris (Avenue Montaigne in the Eighth Arrondissement, Charles de Gaulle Airport, Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Élysées); Germany: First Abbey of Aachen, Berlin; New York: New York City (Brooklyn, American Museum of Natural History, 96th Street Public Library, Manhattan); Italy; Bulgaria: Base of the Balkan Mountains, Perpereshka River, Gorna krepost village, Perperikon (Temple of Dionysus where Medokos declared himself King of Thrace); Thrace; England: London; Greece: Thrace (Samothrace island, Temple of Nike) and Samothrace city, Mount Fengari, port city of Thessaloniki, Seuthopolis, Kazanlak Valley, Antikythera Island; Belarus: Minsk]
Quote: 'Harry had seen a lot of stuff in his day. The intensity in this woman’s eyes was up there with the best of it. “What’s waiting?” “The enemy. You are on a mission from the gods.”' Andrew Clawson. The Thracian Idol -
This book is the continuation of Harry's adventures. In the beginning, Harry is looking of revenge on the person who tore apart his family when he was young and caused his mother to fake her own death to keep everyone safe. However, Harry finds himself in the search for the Thracian Idol and needs to get to it before anyone else. He is unsure who he can and cannot trust. As usual, the author has more than one storyline going in the book, which makes this novel a page turner, but all of the storylines come together. Harry not only works for Joey Morello (a mob boss), but he also works for Nora Doyle (who works in the stolen artifacts department in the New York DA's office. With each book we learn more about Harry's past, and more of the back story and the interaction between seemingly unrelated people. Along the way Harry faces danger at almost every turn and once started I always find it hard to put down the book I would advise you to read the Harry Fox series in order.
The author gives an Author's Notes section at the end that explains what is fact and what is fiction in the story. As a history lover, it is fascinating to see what parts of the story are true and what parts are "altered" to make the story. I am ready to reread the books from the beginning before the next Harry Fox adventure comes out as I am sure there are little bits of information that I missed in the earlier books. The last page of this book has piqued my interest in Book 8.
I am on the Advance Readers Team and received an advance copy of this copy in exchange for my honest review.
I received this novel from the author and the folks at bookfunnel.com in return for an honest review.
I have been fortunate enough as part of Clawson's ARC team to get the opportunity to read each of his new novels before their release and I wanted to pass along that this was another enjoyable story, as we follow the adventures of Harry Fox as he explores the countryside of the ancient country of Thrace (which now encompasses parts of modern-day Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey). This is a fun way to learn a little history and be entertained.

On a five-star scale, I would easily give this book a solid four stars out of five. The Thracian Idol is the latest pulse-pounding archeological adventure in the best-selling Harry Fox series, perfect for fans of Indiana Jones, Sean Wyatt, and Dirk Pitt.
As with most of my literary ramblings, this is just my five cents worth
Harry uses a newly acquired Charlemagne bible to make contact with Olivier Lloris, the man responsible for Harry’s father’s death. When a small landslide at an archeological dig in Bulgaria reveals the tomb of King Cotys the Fourth, two bodies are found nearby murdered. One is the roommate of the NY governor’s daughter, so Harry’s step-father Gary Doyle asks him to investigate. He ends up following two trails: the Bulgaria Spartacus tomb for Gary Doyle and the Charlemagne monk’s bible for his father. Both have a lot of hidden booby-trapped caves and dangerous rivals on the trail.
Olivier Lloris is an egomaniac bully.
Footnote: 1) These ancient people spent a lot of time building caves & stuff in temples to leave clues for their ancestors, who probably are leaving their own clues. Where do they find the time to do other historical things?
Fave scenes: the British Museum joke, the elementary school auction, the Great Library statues exhibit in the museum and Harry meeting an old friend.
I really enjoy the Harry Fox books and I like how each book is a different story but they all have an underlying story going on throughout them all. This latest installment is as good as the previous ones, from start to finish the author keeps you turning the pages. And what a fantastic twist at the end. So well researched and I love how he uses facts to create fiction. I was lucky to read the prequel to this series which was another great book and it was nice to have Harry's dad Fred in the story alive.
Harry Fox is tasked to look into the sudden exposure of an archaeological site revealed by an earthquake. From the onset his life is in danger. Again. Traps and men with guns follow him as he follows the trail of Thrace's most famous son.
Once again I found it difficult to put this book down. The plotline twists and turns, and great characters are developed. Bits of history are revealed and wondrously embellished.
I am zipping through these books. Love the series!
Harry is now a shopkeeper specializing in selling of antiques. Does that mean he’s done relic hunting? When the DA asks for his help to find out what happened to a young man, known by the Governor, on an antiquities dig. Harry heads out to investigate. Will this be a simple mission, or will Harry get down and dirty in a relic hunt? And, at what cost?
Harry keeps getting into all kinds of trouble. I enjoy the fix of facts and fiction. There’s so much history in our world. Harry inspires me to read the actual history involved with his adventures! This book wanders a bit a field but still very interesting. Repeat characters make this book even more fun!
As always, your books are worth waiting for. Excellent read I love archaeology. I love history. I feel sorry that nowadays people are trying to erase it. They forget if you erase history, you are doomed to repeat. Please keep writing your books are so excellent and they are always well worth waiting for.
Another thrilling Harry Fox adventure! Lots of countries to visit, puzzles to solve, bad guys to dodge and traps to outwit. Add in yet another personal mystery to resolve and you have an adventure story that is almost impossible to put down. Can't wait for the next book to be published. I really enjoy these books and wish they could come out more often.
Just ok. It follows the same flow as all the other Harry Fox stories so I was able to predict what was going to happen. The historical/archeological aspect always kept my interest, but even that can't anymore. This was a tough one to get through and I'm not interested in finishing out the series.
Yet another great story the discovery the history the danger the villains thats Harry's life, but this time it's not the relics it's the history that spurs him on. A.C. Takes us to a time only dreams can take us well done. I highly recommend this book
Harry Fox takes us readers once again on an adventure filled with cryptic messages, hidden relics, unsavory foes and so much more! This was a fast-paced read for me, filled with action that held my attention.
Received as ARC. Another enjoyable addition to the Harry Fox saga. Harry ends up in Bulgaria, where an ancient Thraceian burial vault has been uncovered. The adventure grows as he is chased all over Europe. As usual, great characters and story. Another enjoyable read
What is a self-respecting dealer of rare artifacts to do when his Mother's husband, the Assistant District Attorney for Anti-trafficking of Rare Artifacts calls in a favor?
I really enjoy reading AndrewClawson’s books. They always hold my interest and I always learn something new with each book. I love the history, the art history and the swerving action.
The suspense and unexpected surprises are unlimited. There is one adventure after another based on historical events that enrich the adventures for harry and the reader. There is no end to the constant discoveries that fuel the energy of the storyline.
Lots of continued fun and adventure. If you have read any of the first 6 books you will know what to expect. Artifact and location details that will have you wanting to research on the side. Leaves you hoping the next leg of the story is just over the horizon.
Did not finish. Except for the historical bits, which are well-researched, it’s just the same old plot rehashed in a different setting. The characters have grown less interesting, and there are only so many ways for Harry to employ his knuckle-dusters.
Who was Spartacus ? A race to discover his tomb. Russian thugs on your tail controlled by someone called Big Bird. Can Harry find the clues to the answer ?
Harry Fox is back in this exciting and non stop action in The Thracian Idol. Harry doesn't have to look for trouble, it always seems to find him and boy does he get himself into a whole load of it in this adventure. Harry is looking for payback after the billionaire Olivier Lloris tore his family apart. The best way to seek revenge is to tempt Olivier with such a rare antiquity that could possibly change the way history had been written. But how far will Harry go to get his revenge and to what cost?
Another rip-roaring ride from one of the best action writers out there.
Harry gets involved in an archaeological project, not realizing how much danger he’s in. At first his intent was to find the person who had endangered his family. Fast paced, secrets and fantastic characters.
