Join Sherlock and Lucy as they return for this 34th installment of their beloved mystery series, with sun-soaked shores, treacherous depths, and a honeymoon turned high-stakes mission.
June 1901. On the radiant Cornwall coastline, the shadows of intrigue grow longer as Lucy and Jack take on an undercover operation with only the Baker Street crew as backup. In this unfamiliar landscape, every whisper holds a mystery and every footfall may unveil treachery. Our heroes must unravel a series of mind-bending puzzles intertwined with the very heart of Britain's global telegraph network.
But it's not just codes and wires they're up against—there's a name on everyone's lips, "Mermaid," a spy wrapped in enigma, who must be apprehended, whatever the cost. The stakes escalate even further when Becky and Flynn delve into the abyss of a missing ship's enigmatic fate, a quest that beckons with the allure of unfathomable treasures lying beneath the sea's glimmering surface. And then, there's the woman whose haunting presence weaves through the heart of it all—a siren claiming the guise of a mermaid, entwining sailors' souls in a symphony of doom.
As shadows converge and the scent of malevolence hangs heavy in the air, our indomitable detectives find themselves in a race against time. The tranquil beauty of Cornwall masks a storm of treachery that threatens not only this idyllic haven but the very fabric of an empire. Will Sherlock and Lucy decipher the riddles that lie before them, or will the darkness lurking beneath snuff out their every insight?
Prepare for an exhilarating plunge into a world where enigmas abound and every moment counts. The Cornwall Mermaid is a riveting journey, a heart-pounding escapade that only the brilliant Baker Street minds are likely to survive. Fans of the series will love the new and intriguing family dynamic, while newcomers will find themselves immersed in the world of Victorian England, caught up in the chase for justice.
Anna Elliott is an author of historical fiction and fantasy. She enjoys stories about strong women, and loves exploring the multitude of ways women can find their unique strengths. She was delighted to lend a hand with the Sherlock & Lucy series, and thrilled to continue a new spin-off series featuring Becky and Flynn. Her first series, the Twilight of Avalon trilogy, is a retelling of the Trystan & Isolde legend. She wrote her second series, The Pride & Prejudice Chronicles , chiefly to satisfy her own curiosity about what might have happened to Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy, and all the other wonderful cast of characters after the official end of Jane Austen’s classic work.

Another wonderful Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James story with Dr. Watson, Lucy's husband Jack, Becky and Flynn. Lucy and Jack go on a honeymoon as part of the investigation.
I would highly recommend this series and authors to fans of Sherlock Holmes and readers of romantic family and friends relationship adventure mystery novel. 2024 🤔👒😆😘
"The Cornwall Mermaid" is the latest installment in the long-running series of novels, short stories and novellas known as the Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James series from Anna Elliot & Charles Veley, a father-daughter team writing about a father-daughter team.
This newest, novel-length installment is every bit as delightful as the other entries in this collection. The authors are particularly adept at interweaving actual historical incidents into an otherwise fictional narrative. This one involves a system of underwater telegraph cables the British Empire was completing to establish an unrivaled global communication network in the days leading up to the first World War and an attempt by unknown forces to sabotage that effort. The stuff about the underwater cable system is, in fact, true history. The plot that involves Sherlock, Lucy and their team in a web of deceit and murder, is fictional, but highly enjoyable.
For fans of the series the action in this one is equally distributed between all of the main series characters: Holmes, Watson, Holmes’ daughter Lucy James, her husband, Jack, Jack’s young sister, Becky, and Flynn, one of the chief members of Holmes’ Baker Street Irregulars. Once the plot is set in motion, the action shifts very rapidly between all of our protagonists, who are pursuing separate strands of the investigation. There also appears to be two meanings to the title – a ship named the Cornwall Mermaid and a woman who claims to be one of those mythical sirens of the sea.
If you’re a fan of the series (and I am), I can highly recommend this latest installment as being among their best. If you’re new to Sherlock and Lucy, I might recommend beginning with an earlier story so you can get a fuller appreciation for each of the characters and how they relate to each other. You can thank me later.
Lucy James Kelly and her husband Jack head off to Cornwall ostensibly on a 'real' honeymoon. Of course, we readers of the Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James series know that the happy couple are always 'on the case.' The year is 1901 and undersea telegraph cables are making their way from South Africa to the shores of Cornwall. The Boer War is raging and communications between South Africa and England are vital to the war effort. A single company overseas the end of the project and there is a German spy in its midst. Holmes and company enter the fray, and the game's afoot.
Anna Elliott and Charles Veley always manage to take me back to the bygone era where Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and company aid all in need of their assistance. When it is the British government is in dire need, we can count on an appearance by Sherlock's brother Mycroft. With all 34 volumes under my proverbial belt, I have learned to always make note of the small things for they will surely play into the solution of the problem.
At the end of the book, there is a section of Historical Notes which bears reading. Although the characters and much of the story is fiction, the addition of actual history adds to the appeal of these books. I recommend reading these notes.
THE CORNWALL MERMAID, the thirty-fourth book in the series, is as fresh a read as was the first book. As always, it is a fast, engaging foray into the adventures of the world's most famous Consulting Detective.
The anticipated release date for THE CORNWALL MERMAID is September 22, 2023.
June 1901. Lucy and Jack Kelly are sent by Holmes to the village of Porthcurno as the station chief, Bousbib, of the undersea telegraph company is missing. In a few days the last link to England from South Africa will be completed, important because of the Boar War and the need for speedy communications. Then Holmes, Watson with Becky and Flynn join them. But can they unravel the mystery in time and find the spy, and possible murderer. An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its cast of interesting and likeable characters. Another good addition to this enjoyable series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Another excellent tale of mystery and intrigue in this great series.
But you know what I loved the most? that Lucy and James are undercover as newly-wed and the matron of the inn where they are staying can't believe they are recently married because they look at each other with too much adoration *dies laughing*
And I liked it a lot Mycroft here, I always enjoy his dry and very subtle humour and how he puts people in their place :P
And the historical details! They are fascinating and always add a lot to the story.
What an amazing journey! Seeing (not actually seeing) Holmes dole out some much needed "physical justice " made me cheer. Becky and Flynn's confinement with explosives had me biting my nails with anxiety. A d that's just mentioning two highlights in an exciting story. The more I read about Holmes and crew , the more I am enamored with their skills, quick thinking, and ingenious minds. A. Awesome experience!
This book is part of a long running series of which this is the first I have read, I found it perfectly ok as a stand alone read. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are now joined in their investigations by Sherlock’s daughter Lucy James. The story revolves around a disappearance in Cornwall and the telegraph lines undersea to South Africa. It is an enjoyable read and you do not have to have read all the 30+ previous books in the series to enjoy it!
I received an ARC of The Cornwall Mermaid for an honest review. I enjoyed this story immensely. The authors do an excellent job of maintain Sherlock and Watson to the original stories. They do an excellent job of maintaining historical accuracy and an excellent mystery to be solved. I recommend this story highly.
The latest in an enjoyable series. It is the same cast of characters asked by Mycroft to deal with a question of utmost importance to the security of the Empire.
It will be interesting to see how they eventually merge Becky and Flynn's timeline here with the timeline in the companion series (Becky and Flynn WW1 Mysteries).
I love the tantalising stories of Sherlock Holmes!!!!😉😉
This story is right along with all the others of Sherlock Holmes!!! Keeps you gripped and guessing on the tantalising outcome!!! The authors did a splended job!!!!!🤗🤗🤗🤗 I would recommend this book to you and all my friends!!!😉😉😉 The 5 Star ratting was well deserved!!!!😃😃😃😃
Sherlock and Lucy and all of their acquaintances are at it again. Something is happening in Cornwall and a ship named the Mermaid is involved. Called into action Sherlock & Watson, Lucy & Jack and Becky & Flynn all have a role. World War I is the theater where all this is happening . Like all the books in this series I recommend this one.
Another great book with Sherlock, Lucy and the gang. Intrigue and mystery in Cornwall and, perhaps , a mermaid. If you want a book that keeps you guessing what will happen next, this book is for you. I was given this book free for my honest opinion.
Another great addition to a suspenseful and intriguing series. So true to f the spirit of Sherlock Holmes with added characters makes it exceptional and entertaining.
Can't wait for the next one from Anna . Lucy, Becky and Flynn have stolen my heart. Love the interaction between all of them, I feel like I am there and seeing what they see. So looking forward to all of her and her fathers books.
This was a well written well paced mystery in the style of a Sherlock Holmes story. This author has done their homework and sets up and authentic mystery with plenty of twists turns and intricate plotting. I won't divulge the story because it's too good to miss.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it definitely kept me guessing till the end. This is the first book I have read in this series but I will definitely be reading more.
This is book #34 and I've enjoyed the entire series. They are on the short short side and a palate cleanser between books. I've even read several in a row for a satisfying read.
This time set at Cornwall coast, where Sherlock Holmes and associates must determine if missing man from Porthcurno cable station was really a enemy spy.
This one takes place outside of London and involves the English government and fighting against the crowns enemies, bots, transcontinental wire service and the English class system. It's a good one.
This book has more of Jack and Lucy together. I love that. They are such a comfortable couple. The plot of this book gets a little twisty, which make it hard to figure out who is the good guys vs the despicable ones. I really enjoy getting to know the characters interact with each other. Especially Becky and Flynn. Although I do worry about Flynn's head. He get knocked out at least once every book.
The other characters introduced in the book. And I enjoyed reading about early cryptography. Laying all those wires from Africa to England and other countries seems unimaginable. Especially without modern equipment. All in all, I really enjoy reading letters from my distant relatives. Make me feel like I was there.
I received an ARC from the authors. This review is voluntary and honrst. I recommend not only this book but the whole series.
Another exciting adventure with Sherlock and crew, this time along the smuggler's coast of Cornwall. Plenty of action, as always, with Becky and Flynn giving cause to worry as they somehow manage to get involved in the most dangerous plots and with the most dangerous people as well.
