Wounded while retaking the Armory, Talon's recovery is slow and painful. Unaware that his family in Texas are having to deal with similar situations from within their own community. With still no action or assistance from the Federal or State governments, each community must deal with daily shortages of their basic needs. Civilization and civility has been replaced with every person for themselves. Lawlessness and chaos is the new normal. Large population centers have for the most part become unsustainable. Talon pushes himself relentlessly to regain enough strength to resume his journey. Every decision takes on more importance as the world falls deeper into anarchy.
Growing up in the Ozarks, David spent a great deal of his time growing up with his Grandfather, learning how to fish, hunt, and trap. Joining the Marine Corps (0341) at the age of 17, he enjoyed his time in the grunts, but switched over to Counterintelligence after picking up Sergeant. Staying with the USMC for just over 20 years, he retired in 1998 at the age of 38, attaining the rank of CWO-2.
After retiring he has worked for a few different government agencies and as a contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan. Still active as a contractor, he enjoys writing in what spare time he can find, with his first published book coming out in May 2019, “Lone Star Odyssey-First Steps”. His second book in the series "Obstacles" came out in December 2019. Followed by the third in the series, Choices in 2022. Book four, Decisions, was released in August of 2023. Book five of the series should be released early spring of 2024.
Living in Texas with his wife and kids, most of his time outside of work is spent with his wife and kids, their horses and dogs, and with repairs around the ranch.
What I like about this story is the realism of the encounters and outcomes. First getting outfitted with equipment found at any outdoor goods store and traveling by bicycle. Makes perfect sense. Crazy, backstabbing liberal women - check. Whining, entitled college students - check. Evil, corrupt, domineering government bureaucrats with guns - check. Good guys using tactical common sense and adapting - also what is reasonable to expect in the aftermath of an attack. The ball busting banter also reads authentic. Very entertaining.
I read all five books, despite the confusing sentence structure/grammar and spelling errors, which made me wonder whether it was proofread/edited. The ending was very disappointing. Readers don't know if he makes it home, or what becomes of his family. If I had realized there would be no resolution to his journey or his family's struggles, I would never have even finished book #1.
I have loved this series from the beginning and this book does not disappoint. Talon is a hero and not afraid to do the hard things with his wife beong the same. Two strong characters make for a great read.
