Excellent & Realistic Post-Apocalyptic Story

Prepper Book 2, like all of Abrahams’s books, is another compelling installment in the post-apocalyptic series. These series always seem to get better and better as they continue (and things fall apart more), and I can tell this one is just starting to build into something bigger. Just like the first book, Abrahams skillfully crafts a story that feels both compelling and frighteningly real.

Speaking of real, the neighborhood subplot, focusing on Warrant’s family and their neighbors, is perhaps the most realistic portrayal of post-apocalyptic community dynamics I’ve read in a long time. The way that the neighbors banded together to try and force Warrant’s hand felt like it went down exactly as I would expect it to. The way that Jack explained what was going on to his family and got their buy-in put the cherry on top. It’s always funny to me, in most other books, that would cause the Warrant family to run away in the night and seek refuge at their safe bunker or cottage, but they were prepped the way that a normal family would be – so staying is better than leaving.

I don’t like going too far into detail, (and I read these so close to each other that I can’t remember if it was in book one or two, but…) the scenes that play out at the storage unit are ones that I won’t soon forget. It was the perfect amount of action and “good feeling” at the end (as good as you can get given the circumstances).

Similarly, without going too deep into the detail, there was an entire sub-plot devoted to some characters who had to revert to their military training to save the day which felt both insane and also added to the action ramping up. I know that this is going to set off a new section moving forward and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

One final thought, Slate is a standout antagonist, reminiscent of a certain tech billionaire, which adds another layer of relatability and realism to the story

Overall, Prepper Book 2 is a gripping read that leaves you eagerly anticipating the next installment. Abrahams’s storytelling combined with Pierce’s narration makes for an engaging experience that fans of the genre will thoroughly enjoy.

A couple of things -

Near the start of this book there’s a copy paste couple of pages from the first book, describing G-Man’s basement bunker and it’s describing his electronic set up, it annoyed me so much I stopped reading for a couple of days.

There almost feels like there are too many ‘main’ characters and I feel a little spread thin forcing care across so many, like I have so many people to learn about and root for in this situation.

Too much telling and not showing at times, it takes all the tension and drama out of certain scenes.

You don’t need to reiterate Jack & Betty’s relationship/parenting set up so many times, we get it and love it - show us don’t keep breaking it down every interaction they have.

The constant breakdowns of any and all references made to popular culture…books films art etc - they really pull you out of the story.

Those are my gripes.

Overall the second book was a strong entry to the series though I feel with all the bits bogging it down that I complained about, we didn’t advance as far in the story as we probably should have. Now I see why it’s a 5 book series. I’m enjoying the characters and the general storyline, I just wish it had been edited a little tighter so everything flowed and moved along at a better pace.

Jack Warrant and wife Betty are preppers. They've prepared for any situation where they have to provide for themselves when the government is unable or unwilling to aid whatever turned the power off. The have food, water and emergency supplies of first aid and medicines. They also have neighbors who know they have supplies and demand 'their share' of the Warrants' supplies.
Meanwhile, the man responsible for taking the Texas power grid down and disabling electronics across the state, has kidnapped the governor's daughter demanding that an announcement be made that the governor was behind this conspiracy against Texas. Another prepper, Tim, "G-man" is called in and asked to get Molly Fine, the daughter, from the evil clutches of the wannabe evil henchman. With some handpicked associates G-man goes after the kidnappers while Jack and Betty contend with an emergency in their neighborhood.
Fast-paced action and suspense keep the storyline churning while the characters perform their functions flawlessly. The only real problem I had with this book was loss of sleep while I had to wait for the action to slowdown enough to rest. It didn't! This story is an amazing good read!

This continues a good series. I like G-man but the rescue part of the story seemed to consume a lot of this book. I find what is happening to the neighborhood of Betty and Jack a bit more interesting, assuming Betty wakes up a bit more. This is where we see the impact of what has happening on the everyday people. I did give points for all of the Star Trek references. I'm a bit surprised that when mentioning the EMP discussion by Carson and Santorum, the fact that Congress had a commission study and report was not noted. Far more informative than the first two. I look forward to the next book.

Book 2 picks up right where the last one leaves off: Jack and his family are worried about when their neighbors will turn on them as they get desperate for supplies and how they can protect themselves against a potential attack. These stories are terrifying in their portrayal of what will happen if there is a large-scale disaster that people are not ready for. Fascinating and scary at the same time. Not sure how I feel about the other story regarding the kidnapping of the governor’s daughter; it doesn’t seem needed. Otherwise, I can’t wait to move on to the next.

A dark and grim look at the increasing desperation following an EMP and cyber attack on Texas. Entering into Day 5 of an increasingly desperate Texas facing riots, kidnapping, murders, suicides, and major ecological disasters, many begin to realize the government will not be riding to the rescue anytime soon and their survival may depends largely on their own actions and fortitude... This only increases desperation and lawlessness... And this is only Day Five of an ongoing crisis with no immediate resolution anywhere in sight. A terrifyingly realistic look at our lack of preparedness....

The series is good but it feels like a retread of The Perseid Collapse by Ross Elder. I guess there are only so many ways to tell this type of story.
