"I’ve never been afraid of the dark.

I never needed any reassurance that there was no monster in my closet or under my bed.

Perhaps that’s because a part of me always knew I was one."

Monstrous claws weren't the type of gift I’d been expecting for my eighteenth birthday, along with the desire to eat my ex-boyfriend. Yet those beastly traits and carnivorous urges are the exact reason I’m here, at Alystair University.

Alystair University was all I heard about growing up. Its prestige and exclusivity could rival any Ivy League. But that’s not the real reason that sets the school apart from others. Everyone at this school is a monster. Like me.

I should feel safe here. This school will afford me the opportunity to hone my monstrous abilities and curb my carnivorous urges. Not to mention, I have a fierce girl gang by my side, guiding me every step of the way.

But then decapitated bodies start showing up on campus. Someone is killing off students, and in a school full of monsters, everyone is a suspect. Yet all eyes are on Nick Cervallos, a boy whose charm is as deadly as his claws.

And who I can’t seem to stay away from.

Despite danger lurking around every corner, I’m determined to prove Nick’s innocence. But in order to do that, I’ll have to let my monstrous side loose. I just don’t know what I’m more afraid of - coming face to face with a blood-thirsty monster…

Or myself.

Offering a sinister twist on your typical Greek Mythology stories, Monstrous is the first in a three-book dark fantasy series filled with jaw dropping twists, heart-stopping romance, and deadly cliffhangers. If you were a Percy Jackson fan, but now your tastes are darker, this series is for you.

Nicole Rubino is a lover of fantasy, though she loves a steamy contemporary romance for good measure. Monstrous is her debut adult novel, and is the first of a three-book series. Morticia Addams is her role model, and you will often find Nicole belting out the tunes to any Stevie Nicks or Fleetwood Mac song (alas, not well). The mother of four young dragons (children), Nicole manages the beautiful chaos of her home by channeling it into her poor characters instead. Nicole lives in New York with her 100% Aries of a husband and said dragons.

oh my god, the ending!!!!

Monstrous by Nicole M. Rubino is an engaging Greek Mythology fantasy romance, full of twists that you won't see coming. Centered around a university for legendary monsters and their descendants, a world masterfully crafted unfolds, brimming with captivating lore and unforgettable characters who have etched a permanent place in my heart.

Although I loved this book, the pacing in the beginning was weird and there were moments when the dialogue seemed a bit too childish. Also, the formation of the "girl gang" felt unconvincing; they became close friends within moments of meeting, a scenario that, in my opinion, felt unrealistic given the current dynamics among girls; girls aren't as friendly nowadays. However, as the story unfolded, I found myself appreciating the connections they forged and the unwavering support they provided for one another.

Rhiannon "Rhi" Owens, the main character, she is selfless, unwaveringly loyal, and a captivating monster, her journey from a normal teenage girl with a dark incident to a fearless leader, although it was slightly annoying at times when she didn't want to accept help from her best friends, but I get it she doesn't want to put more people in dangers way. I really wish we got to know more about her bio parents/finding them. Hopefully in the next book!

Nicholas, the male protagonist, is a dreamlike creation—a strong, mysterious, and alluring being, who maintains a gentlemanly demeanor despite his monstrous nature. We get to know a lot about him... and his big reveal of who he actually is... although getting to that point dragged on a lot. Nick's relationship with Rhi is marked by a determination to protect her at any cost. I loved their dynamic as a couple, and despite the prophecy, I hope they can work things out!!

Monstrous was such a fun read, the twists had me gasping, sobbing, and kicking my feet in the air while clutching my iPad to my chest; there were so many great moments between all the characters and the friendships were amazing. This book makes you feel like you're amongst the characters enduring everything with them.

The main issue I have with this book (other than the stuff I previously said) is it's very similar to a lot of books out there already. I couldn't help but notice a semblance to a book I read last year, I've Watched You Die (if you've read this one and loved it then you should check out I've Watched You Die by Karina Banks or visa-versa). The shared elements of an adopted girl discovering her latent powers upon reaching a certain age, being accepted into a specialized academy for her kind, Mythology (IWYD - Norse mythology), prophecies... etc.

Of course, Monstrous has its own uniqueness and has Percy Jackson vibes - a school for descendants of the Greek monsters/gods!  I loved that aspect of the book so much and I'm highly anticipating book 2, I DESPERATELY need to know more, especially after that ending!! I have so many questions!

If you love,

❥ monster college
❥ murder mystery
❥ dark academia
❥ greek mythology
❥ slightly spicy romance
❥ slow - medium burn
❥ girl gang vibes
❥ twists on twists and a jaw-dropping ending

this is the book for you!

Thank you for the ARC Nicole <3

I am not the target audience for this book, but mainly this is because I feel the blurb and categories it’s listed in are just not correct. This is listed as a NA, LGBTQ+ romantasy. I haven’t gotten to any spice yet, but the only thing about this book that could categorize it as NA is if there was explicit spice (because I don’t believe explicit spice belongs in YA books). The tone of the book is very amateur, and the main character is such a pick me college girl who acts like she’s in high school. I know the love interest is Nick but genuinely I could not see any romance between them. I think the author tried doing a quick enemies to lovers type thing, but every one of their scenes together just didn’t make sense.

Next, this book was marketed as an LGBTQ+ story, but the main characters M/F are only said to have been in past relationships with the opposite gender, so ultimately straight. Because you can’t write a book and label it queer unless the main characters are written queer. Yes, queer people can be in straight passing relationship, and of course bi people exist. BUT when you label your story as queer, there is a certain expectation that at least one of the main characters will be explicitly stated as queer, even if they are in a straight-passing relationship. I hope I’m saying all of this in a way that makes sense, these are my feelings on the matter. Two of the side characters are in a sapphic (lesbian?) relationship together, but writing two of the side characters as queer does not make this an LGBTQ+ book. It almost felt like a false selling point. I did look on Amazon, and this book is also listed as “LGBTQ+ Fantasy” and that’s just so misleading. People are going to download and read this book, thinking it’s a queer book (BECAUSE THATS HOW ITS LABELED), and it’s just not a queer book

[you might be saying “emily how can you be certain the MCs aren’t queer if you haven’t read the whole book”, and to that I say, I read other reviews and those who finished the book confirmed the queer aspect was misleading for the same reasons I’m stating here]

Anyways, I’ve made my point. I won’t hash on this book much more, because I recognize my irritation towards the queer labeling has most definitely turned me off to this book, so I’m inherently only looking for bad things. One thing I will say is that the amount of info dumping that occurs in the first quarter of this book was insane. Like I couldn’t keep up with the shit that was being thrown at us, and what monster everyone was and what characteristic and “powers” they have. Plus the amount of secrecy but not secrecy revolving the FMC was annoying

I think this book would be better suited for a YA audience since the writing is very surface level, but again if there are explicitly spice scenes than in the last 3/4 of the book then it just isn’t YA.

I digress. I am interested to see other reviews once this book comes out in January. Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks to Netgalley and the author for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

DNF at 15%

I’m not the target audience for this book. Now why did I request it? Well, it was in the categories adult and LGBTQIA+ and the blurb sounded a interesting and a bit sarcastic. But I think the blurb is completely serious and it is a straight NA romance. (The author also says so on Insta so not sure what went wrong here) (There are some sapphic SCs). Me reading the blurb and thinking the MC is a man is my fault I suppose, in retrospect I could have seen that.

So again this is definitely not something I normally read and I’ve only read 15%, do keep that in mind for what follows.

The MC definitely has “I’m so special” vibes. As in there is some actual internal monologue similar to “I’m different than everyone else, I didn’t belong anywhere, but now I’m in a place where everyone is different in the same way as me and I should belong. But I’m still so different.” It's annoying.
I also didn’t particularly like any of the other characters.
To the romance: That was the most cliché YA beginning I’ve ever read. She’s the new person and he’s the mysterious, popular pretty boy that is kind of an asshole and every other girl is super into him.
Mild spoiler:
I don't want to read that sorry.

This was a super fun read! Based in Greek mythology, we see all different kinds of monsters through their descendants as they attend an elite college for monstrous creatures… and work to solve a series of murders. I loved that we see such a variety of monsters across the university campus, including some unique ones that are more uncommon to find in modern media!

I really enjoyed reading the relationships form, especially the female friendships between Rhiannon, Scarlett, Astrid, Liv, and Zo. (and as always I’m a sucker for the music references & band tees, and a sucker for Nick as a result.)

I loved watching Rhi grow into her best, most monstrous version of herself, from a scared teen to a confident, brave leader. She stands up for what’s right and fights for her friends, while solving the murders plaguing the campus!

So let’s say you put Jennifer’s Body, Vampire Diaries and Netflix’s Wednesday series in a blender and added a dash of TJ DeSchamps Westside Oracle universe, and some extra sinister Percy Jackson, heavy on the ancient monster DNA, that’s this book. Doesn’t that sound wild?! It’s really good!

Our FMC is Rhi Owens, who is adopted, and she’s just recently discovered that she’s not human. Due to her genetics, she is accepted into Alystair University. It’s Ivy League exclusive, but only students with special qualities get to attend. Upon arrival, she finds an immediate girl gang of good friends, and begins crushing on her roommates older brother. And also begins to deduce exactly what monster she’s a descendant of. Hint: it’s super rare and she’s probably got a target on her back.

Our MMC is Nick Cervallos. He’s extra mysterious and devastatingly handsome, and incredibly charming. Girls are falling all over him and are willing to share, he’s so desirable. But he only wants Rhi. He’s protective, and brilliant, and seems to know way more about everything than Rhi. The “who did this to you?” is strong and I am here for it!

Pretty quickly out of the gate, a serial killer monster is taking people down, and Nick’s name is being thrown around as a prime suspect. Rhi works with him in secret as they try to unearth some of the darkest history behind Alystair University, and even though she’s pretty sure of her group of friends, literally anybody could be responsible for the killing spree. Who can she trust? And how?

The twists and turns are fantastic, and the world building is seamless. The spice is SUPER HOT when that slow burn finally ignites for real. The emotions run high and the sense of found family is a huge theme. I was rooting for Rhi and Nick, and I hoped I could trust Scarlett and her girlfriend Astrid, and everyone else was suspicious, to be honest. But WOW that ending. Book 2 needs a release date!

Okay, okay, I know it’s early only being January, but, dare I say… I’ve found one of my new favorite books?

We follow our MC, Rhiannon, (Rhi), as she attends Alystair, a school for monsters just like her. A place she finally feels like she belongs, where she finally finds friends, her girl gang. But, then bodies start dropping and the prestigious school.

This book has everything you could want. Monsters, magic, dark academia vibes, an enemies to lovers romance, and oh man, the SPICE!

I could not put this book down. I was addicted from the first chapter. The writing had me so enveloped in the story, and so engrossed. The story itself is so original and creative. I’ve never read a book like this before and I loved every single second of it.

Nicole M Rubino’s writing was so beautiful and detailed. I love how she put in so much detail to the monsters, their abilities, and even the way the school itself looks.

The spice in this book was a slow build, which made me want to read the book that much faster but I also wanted to take my time with the book because I just didn’t want it to end.

The ending had my jaw on the floor, and me sitting there mind numb, and was definitely not something I was expecting.

I went into this book expecting to like it just by the description & the cover and came out loving it so much. Now, I’m so excited for book 2 👏🏻😮‍💨😭

Monstrous is a NA Dark romance novel following a diverse cast of characters, all of whom are descended from Greek monsters.

It’s essentially the anti-Percy Jackson but dark and for adults.

We follow Rhiannon as she discovers her monstrous ancestor and unravels the a mystery at her college that seems to be have made her its main focus. We see her bond with other girls and watch as they come together as a solidly strong sisterhood and see her become friends then lovers with Nicholas, the powerfully enigmatic monster boy that we absolutely adore.

Like any good dark academia there are secret societies to join or expose and dangerous classes and intriguing professors.

The spice is a slow burn, but definitely worth the wait!

You’ll never see the twist coming and that’s exactly why you should read this!

Wow! What an amazing book! It sunk its claws into me from the beginning and kept me hooked all the way though!
I knew that this book was for me as soon as heard it described as Percy Jackson but adult and the monsters POV.
I LOVED Percy Jackson growing up (and I still do) and this description was spot on. It’s so unique in its take. A school for descendants of the Greek monsters - definitely a book for me. I loved finding out about the different characters, what monsters they were descended from and their powers. Their interactions were very real and I wish Rhi learned to share the load early on, could have changed some outcomes.
Eagerly awaiting book 2!

I totally fell in love with this book! It's like this awesome mix of Greek mythology and a murder mystery, seriously, the best combo ever. I've read quite a bit of Greek mythology stuff, but this one takes the cake for being super unique. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out "whodunit" early on, but this one had me genuinely surprised with the outcome and all the unexpected twists. The entire story is this lush, dark, and human-monstrous rollercoaster. I had a blast reading it! The LGBTQIA+ representation was spot on, and the world building was so well-thought-out. I am eager for the sequel!!

If you loved Wednesday but wanted more monsters and romance, THIS is the book for you! It also has Sabrina (Netflix) vibes; the MMC reminds me of Nick and I STAN Nick and Sabrina.
All the monsters are detailed very well and I appreciate the historical references to Greek mythology throughout, it brought the monsters to life in a classic way despite the changes.

First of all, thank you so much to the author for the arc! 😊

Now, I want to start by saying that this is a solid debut, even if some things prevent me from giving it a higher rating. Firstly, the fact that I felt the first half dragging so much, and also the feeling that the plot itself wasn't really present, or it wasn't in the way I thought it would. Meaning, the synopsis speaks about "murders" yet they're so spaced out sometimes I forgot they were the actual plot. The romance, however, was too quick for my liking, considering that it was a "slow burn". I don't know how to exactly explain it, just that I didn't feel the yearning and tension I'd want to feel in a slow burn.

On the other hand, I did like the ideas for the plot. Granted, at some point it felt a bit too much like Percy Jackson, but just in the sense of the overall story of random kid learns about the existance of a "misterious"/"secret" world and goes through a bunch of quests or tasks or learning experiences. I don't mean to say they're the same story, just that they follow a similar structure as it usually happens with the hero archetype stories. The humour in it was similar sometimes too. Either way, the thriller aspect of having murders was intriguing to me, as well as getting to know how this world exactly worked. The friend group (aka, girl gang) was great and the found family trope was great too. I am interested in reading the rest of the series and knowing what is the actual extent of this... revenge story we have going on.

So, long story short, I'd definitely recommend this if you're looking for some quite dark, fantasy/mythological story filled with female rage and strong female characters and friendships. Just have in mind you'll encounter some smut scenes and SA mentions.

Quick Reasons: WHY MUST YOU HURT ME, ENDING?!; aghhhhh I need book 2; unique magics, gorgeous world building, purple prose; wtffffffff whyyyyyyyyy?!; I really have no coherent words

HUGE thanks to Nicole Rubino for the (absolutely HEART AND SOUL WRENCHING) ARC copy of this title! My review of this book is voluntarily written and in no way altered or impacted by this gesture.

Perhaps then, the stories are wrong. Maybe monsters aren't lying in wait underneath beds or inside closets to devour unsuspecting children. Maybe the monsters are just hiding from a human world that would do monstrous things if it ever found out the truth: that we live beside them in plain sight.

Nicole Rubino. If you're reading this. I need you to show yourself before this royal court of Penguin and ANSWER FOR YOUR CRIMES. Because how very DARE you put these feelings in this icy heart of mine and then absolutely shatter it. HOW. VERY. DARE. This Penguin will now commence throwing tuna...again...in displeasure.

Seriously though y'all. This read is a life ruiner. I am broken. I am beyond repair. I am in need of book 2 immediately...and maybe a very stiff drink or some very cold ice cream. Or both. Nicole Rubino crafted absolute MAGIC in this book, and I am beside myself with needing to know everything that happens next RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW. The writing style is gorgeous, the characters are all so kick-ass and worthy of you falling in love with them (and you WILL fall in love with them. All of them. Except uh...except maybe THAT guy...and that one...) The plot is tense, filled with action, and non-stop from page one. You will be breathless, on the edge of your seat, racing toward the ending. And the ending? Given my mini rant tantrum above, I think it's safe to say the ending is going to BREAK YOU.

PLEASE, I implore again, NOT HER. I don't know if I could handle betrayal coming from Liv. But then I think, ISN'T THAT THE POINT? Betrayal doesn't imply trickery from someone you expect it from. No, the very essence of the word is laced with deceit from someone you care about. Someone you love. Someone you trust.

After all, there's no worse feeling in the world than believing someone has your back before they stab you in it.

I definitely recommend this to lovers of monster romances (be warned, there is a SMIDGEN of spice in this read), breathless adventures, and a race to find the answers. If you plan on only picking up one Indie/Self-Pubbed book this quarter (by which I mean early year of 2024), you BEST make it THIS BOOK. The characters are worth getting to know, the story is bound to keep you coming back for more, and I need....NEEEEEEEED....to get these slippery flippers on book 2 IMMEDIATELY. Which means you all need to read this book, book one. There's bigger monsters than those who lurk within these pages, Penguins....keep a watchful eye out for them, lest you be found eaten.

I absolutely loved this book, it was one of the books i was most looking forward to getting from my book sub and it didn't disappoint.

I found the writing style so easy to read, and so so easy to just keep turning the next page.

The world building is subtle and impactful when it's dropped in.

I LOVE Rhi and Nick, the flirty banter is great and had me kicking my feet once or twice. And the spice was so well done!

I am so happy I read this book and have already lined up book 2 to read.

ASTRID is my absolute favourite charecter though!

Fantastic twist, though I was very happy to have correctly guessed it, along the way Nicole did manage to make me doubt my thoughts too - which is great.

One if my favourite lines from the book was.

DNF at 3%. The main character is just not the vibe, and her internal thoughts just feel pretty immature, but alas I am also older than the FMC. If I felt inclined, and had the mental energy to push through I might like it, but I had an immediate dislike of the FMC and the first characters introduced. Just no energy to deal with something that I’m just not into rn. I might decide to give a go later though and rewrite this review.

I received an e-ARC from NetGalley.

When I requested this ARC I didn't know it was a romance, which I'm not a fan of and tend to stay away from, I just knew it was a dark-academia fantasy. But this changed everything, with me not being the target audience at all. I get second-hand embarrassment very easily and the writing didn't help. I cringed my whole way through the book, dreading every time we would have to go back to the romance, the tropes were not for me and I couldn't care less about the relationship. Also, I hated all the punching, slapping, shoving and calling someone an idiot as a form of expressing affection.

Apart from that, it is not even a strong fantasy or dark academia. The world-building and atmosphere didn't exist. The characters didn't have any depth. The ending, the twists and the reveals were underwhelming.

There was queer representation in this, but there were also some random remarks from the main character that made me uncomfortable. I hope they were edited out.

Something positive I can say about this book is that it was very readable, and it gave off Wednesday (the Netflix show) vibes, but horny.

With all of that being said, I am not going to continue with this series.

Omgggg what?!

First of all let me say that in middle school and some of high school I was OBSESSED AND FASCINATED with mythology and gods and goddesses. So reading this made my heart feel so happy! Just reliving the excitement I felt back then.

Let me talk about this story - I LOVE LOVE LOVE THE GIRL GANG! What a group of badass girls! Always have your back and make you feel safe and loved.

I will say this started off slow but quickly caught my attention and I needed to keep going to find out what was gonna happen next. The chemistry between Rhi & Nick - sweet heavens was it delicious, it was a slow burn but I was rewarded in the best way! I love their relationship and the love for each other had me tearing up at the end there.

This story follows Rhi as she discovers that she is a monster & is accepted to an elite university who also happens to be a school for just monsters like her. These monsters are descendants from mythological creatures. While there she meets her girl gang, who become her family & starts to fall for her best friend’s brother. Shortly after girls end up dead and the main suspect is the man who she’s falling for. Intent on proving his innocence she Nick & her girl gang set on a journey to find out who really is responsible for these deaths. And the secrets that she tries to hide start spilling out questioning friendships, relationships and has her questioning who can she really trust.

This had me by my throat and had to jump into book 2 IMMEDIATELY
