Coven of One

Rate this book
In the bluestone caverns, deep under Masterbridge someone is taking notice. It has been a long time since there's been anything to notice, anything at all, but there is, imperceptibly, something there. The yellow ridged fingernail reaches out to swirl the inky black water. With a sprinkle of chosen herbs the scene bursts into life once again. The shrouded face watches intently as the picture clears, expands, shudders and then settles down to admit the truth . . . yes, she is coming.Coven of One is the story of a simple Hedgewitch's journey into the furthest recesses of the darkest heart of the darkest demon. A story of spells and potions, imbued with Pagan magic.

Sometimes one has to wonder what is going on in an author's head. Is she proud of it? Deluded?

Self absorbed witch introduces a benighted village to the benefits of paganism. Another novel attempting to sell a religious philosophy that misfires painfully. To take a for instance: She goes through tremendous contortions in explaining away how and why the witch chooses to control people's minds. Mind control must figure among the worst things a person could do to another, and she never gets to grips with it. She can't decide if she wants witches to be lovely healer types wrongly put upon by narrow minded Churchmen, or powerful folk to be respected and feared. The actively evil elemental foe is both banished and caused by witchcraft. These tensions could be reconciled with a little judicious smoothing, but she never approaches anything like this.

These minor quibbles are alas mere ripples upon the lake of painfully poor prose in which we struggle, emerging on the far shore far filthier than when we entered. Alas, we do not hint at a pleasant definition of filthy, but rather one consisting of slime and diseases caught from rats' urine. Bluntly, the writing is poor, the characterisation weak, the plotting wildly inconsistent and rushed. It is the kind of writing that in all seriousness makes you fear for your own writing, a wild irrational fear that reading bad writing may be infectious.

In case any of this is in any way intriguing, really do not bother.

If you like Cornwall as a setting, read some of the books from the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper, especially the 1st and 3rd. Over Sea, Under Stone and Greenwitch.

I adored this book :) At first I thought it was going to be a bit self-publishedy, but it completely drew me in to the story and I look forward to the sequel. Only minor niggle is that I thought the ending could have been a little less twee but I still really enjoyed it!

I’m sorry but this book is taking way too long to introduce a plot. I’m almost half way through and nothing really is happening!

I’m really disappointed because I had big hopes for this book, there are some parts that I really loved like learning more about small facts about paganism and some of the spells and “prayers” that witches use. other than that, nothing is worth reading. Dorcas, the main protagonist, actually has some serious potentials. I anticipated that she is going to fall in a predicament that will challenge her witch’s skills and the image that the Christian villagers have for her. But none of that happened. That’s why I’m really disappointed.

I enjoyed this story. Dorcas finds herself and her destiny in being a witch far away from home, in a country where witchery is seen as evil. She has to overcome her fears and become her true self.
