A BOY RUNNING FROM THE PAST.
Crown Prince Alaric Bernthal is burdened with the responsibility of his title. With it as a constant reminder of the brother who left him, Alaric continues to run from his haunting past. But when he is suddenly betrothed to Kerensa Na’labesc, a Cebrevenese girl with fire in her eyes, he finds himself falling into a void he doesn’t know his way out of. It’s only a matter of time until Alaric’s dark past catches up to him. Though when he finally gathers the courage to face it, things prove to be more complicated than he ever could have imagined.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEIR FATES ARE INTERTWINED?
They will each face truths that neither can deny for long. Soon enough, Wren and Alaric find themselves in a convoluted situation, one that will result in inevitable damage. Witch against human, magic against steel. Together, they must navigate a thin line to discover who among them they can really trust. Including each other.
Raised on fantasy books and imaginative play, Queenie A. Marie has been writing for the better part of ten years, though it wasn't until 2020 that she decided to tackle her first full novel. She currently writes young adult fantasy in any spare time she can find, aspiring to one day have #1 New York Times Bestselling author on the cover of her books.
I would give this book a rating of 3.5/5. This is a young adult fantasy book.
Each character had a good storyline however I found that none of the individual characters storylines made a good/deep connection to each other, and that made it hard to connect to the story in some parts. But even with those connections missing between characters if you are looking for a young adult fantasy book be sure to check this one out, it was well written and the storyline moved along. There was some points in the book that I struggled to continue, and I think it might have had to do with missing that connection between the characters. The ending is not a complete cliffhanger (I absolutely hate cliffhangers) however there are MANY storylines from the book that are left unfinished. At the end of the book she states that the main characters story will continue in book 2 (no release date has been given as of yet). So if you are missing closure to those unfinished storylines they should have some closure in a second book.
i loved this book. it’s a unique story with well thought-out plot twists, awesome characters and a beautiful romance (THE BANTER WAS ALSO AMAZING ASHGSGD😩). i never felt bored reading this book because the writing style and the way the story was told was intriguing, so i just always wanted to continue reading more. i also LOVED how the book had multiple povs, which is something that i always adore in fantasies, since you don’t only get to learn more about the characters, but you get to understand them as well. so excited for book 2 and i can’t wait to read more of queenie’s writing!😁
Ahhhhh this book was amazing!!! I discovered FOTB through Queenie’s Instagram account and knew I HAD to buy it when it came out. I love Wren and Alaric so much (that ending 🥹❤️😩) I need the next book now!! (But thank you Queenie for not ending FOTB with a cliffhanger 😁)
I loved this book so much! It always kept me interested and there was never a moment where I didn’t want to read it. The plot was well developed, with multiple characters and points of view. There was the perfect balance between romance, action, as well as every day struggles ranging from social inequality to mental health. This book is definitely one to remember, and I certainly recommend reading it!
I've known Queenie to the point that I can remember when this book had a completely different title, but one essential thing hasn't changed--and that's her commitment to her craft.
This is the best high fantasy novel that I've read in a long time. The characters' backstories, the action, and the romance...you can genuinely tell how much thought and effort the author put into this book! Wren is without exaggeration one of my favorite FMCs of all time, in part because she reacts realistically to trauma and grief, but also because her character arc is so captivating. Poor girl really did go through all three Hells and back during this book.
I also absolutely loved the romance. I'm generally not a big fan of romantasy, but FOTB is the one exception. I made (checks Kindle notes) approximately 30 notes and 100+ highlights, most of which were either me yelling about the romance, or me yelling at the characters for...well, you'd have to read FOTB to find out why! I can't wait to see how the characters, romance, and stakes develop in book 2...and speaking of book 2, I need it STAT.
It's absolutely surreal to hold Queenie's debut novel in my own hands. To know that I might have in any way encouraged her and FOTB to where it is today, is an honor in itself. Love you lots, Queenie! I'm so proud of you <3
